Overview
This award provides an academic year fellowship for a continuing graduate student. The Dean’s Fellowship is available to
both domestic and international students. It is particularly appropriate for support in the second through fifth years of
graduate study.

Support
This award provides a $22,000 stipend plus payment of in-state tuition and health insurance (UCSHIP). Please note that
nonresident supplemental tuition will not be provided. Departments may supplement the fellowship with any combination of
appointments up to an average of 35% time over the course of the academic year. (In these cases, Graduate Student Fee
Remission will pay fees and UCSHIP from the salary account. The Graduate Division will pay the balance of fees if needed.)

Overview
The Graduate Division Dissertation Fellowship is intended for doctoral students from all academic disciplines who have advanced to
candidacy and who are in the final stages of completing their dissertation. The Graduate Division Dissertation Fellowship is available
to both domestic and international students. Financial need is a critical component.
The Dissertation Fellowship is intended to free the awardee from TA or non-academic employment obligations, enabling full attention
to dissertation writing. Students receiving this award are not allowed to have student employment during the quarter in which they
receive the Dissertation Fellowship. Students who have not had regular support, such as GSR positions, for dissertation research will
be given priority. This is a one-time, non-renewable award and is expected to be the final award before the degree is conferred. Award
recipients will not be considered for further central fellowship support.

Overview

acquiring and developing sophisticated research skills under faculty mentorship. The fellowship’s goal is to increase
the number of students who contribute to the diversity mission of the university (see text on page 2), who persist
towards the doctoral degree and show promise as candidates for faculty appointments. This award is particularly
appropriate for students in the second through fifth years of their program.
Eligibility
Eligible nominees must:
• Be US citizens, permanent residents, or students who qualify for an NRST exemption under AB 540.
• Be enrolled in a doctoral or M.F.A. program, or in an M.A. program in a department for which the Master’s degree
is the terminal degree offered
• Make a contribution to the diversity of the graduate population in the nominating department or the university
• Demonstrate high academic performance and be in good academic standing at the time of nomination
• Have requisite S13 registration or S13 official Leave Of Absence status at the time of nomination
• Be within time-to-degree or normative time standards through Spring 13
Students are not eligible if they:
• Will have P3 status during any quarter of the funding period
• Hold an active multi-year central fellowship package (e.g. students in a departmental appointment year of a multi-year award)
• Received the GOF and the GRMP twice previously during the student’s academic career at UCSB

PRESIDENT’S DISSERTATION YEAR FELLOWSHIP COVER SHEET 2013­14 Overview
The UC President’s Dissertation Year Fellowship provides financial resources to allow fellows to devote full attention to completing
the dissertation in a twelve-month period. The fellowship’s goal is to increase the number of students who contribute to the diversity
mission of the university (see text on page 2). The award requires a clearly defined, vital mentor relationship between the student and
his/her dissertation advisor that will encourage completion of the doctoral degree during the tenure of this fellowship. Ultimately, this
program aims to improve the rate at which award recipients complete their degrees and to improve the quality of their research
training and scholarly output.
Eligibility
Program is designed for students who contribute to UCSB’s diversity and are at dissertation-completion stage of their graduate work
Eligible nominees must be:
 US citizens, permanent residents, or students qualifying for an NRST exemption under AB 540

Terms of the Award
Fellows receive a travel allowance for a required presentation of their research at another UC campus. Dissertation advisors are
encouraged to assist fellows in arranging for this presentation at either formal or informal settings. Fellows are also required to present
their research at UCSB. Recipients must maintain continuous full-time enrollment and academic good standing at UCSB throughout
the entire tenure of the award. Please note, award recipients may not be employed during the tenure of this award. Award
recipients are expected to finish their PhD within the fellowship year and will not be considered for future central fellowships.

2 The Lucas Ransom Memorial Scholarship
Awarded annually to outstanding undergraduate students who are declared as Chemistry
majors, entering their junior or senior years. Criteria for the awards are based on both
financial need and academic achievement.
Call for Self-Nominations
Deadline: April 17, 2013
Introduction
Lucas Ransom, a 19-year old UC Santa Barbara junior, died tragically as a result of a shark
attack on October 22, 2010 while body-boarding near Vandenberg Air Force Base. Lucas
attended Perris High School in Riverside County, Ca, where he was a successful competitive
swimmer and water polo player. In 2007, he was highly praised for his heroic actions
saving a boy from drowning while working as lifeguard.
To honor the life of Lucas Ransom, his family has established the Lucas Ransom Memorial
Scholarship in an effort to fulfill his aspirations and aid future students who, like Lucas,
aspire to help others and have a deep interest in the Chemical Sciences.
Scholarship Overview
The Lucas Ransom Memorial Scholarship will support upper division (juniors and seniors)
undergraduate students who are declared Chemistry majors. Criteria for awards will be
based on both financial need and academic achievement (minimum 3.3 GPA). Additional
consideration will be given for active extracurricular involvement, including, but not
limited to, participation in athletics, internships/volunteering, work experience, and/or
other activities.

Self-Nomination Procedures
Students wishing to nominate themselves for this scholarship shall submit the following
materials no later than April 17, 2013.

2) List of work/volunteer experiences (this may be in resume format)
3) Approximate 1000 word personal statement touching on the following main points:
a. Why are you interested in the Chemical Sciences? What are your other
academic interests and aspirations?
b. What types of extracurricular activities are you actively involved in and why
are they important to you (including, but not limited to, participation in
athletics, internship/volunteering, work experience)
c. What are your future goals and aspirations, and why?

Financial Details
The amount of each individual award may be based on the individual recipient’s unique
family, financial and academic circumstances, but will, in the interest of having greater
impact, be a minimum of $2000. Awards may have the option to be renewed.
Awardees
Awardees will be notified of their selection by the end of May or early June. Awardees will
be recognized in our annual Departmental Awards Ceremony, which will take place in MidJune. Further details will be announced as the date approaches.
