The Graduate Division Dissertation Fellowship is available to both domestic and international students. Financial need is a critical component. The Dissertation Fellowship is intended to free the awardee from TA or non-academic employment obligations, enabling full attention to dissertation writing. Students receiving this award are not allowed to have student employment during the quarter in which they receive the Dissertation Fellowship. Students who have not had regular support, such as GSR positions, for dissertation research will be given priority. This is a one-time, non-renewable award and is expected to be the final award before the degree is conferred. Award recipients will not be considered for further central fellowship support. Criteria for the awards are based on both financial need and academic achievement. Call for Self-Nominations Deadline: April 17, 2013 Introduction Lucas Ransom, a 19-year old UC Santa Barbara junior, died tragically as a result of a shark attack on October 22, 2010 while body-boarding near Vandenberg Air Force Base. Lucas attended Perris High School in Riverside County, Ca, where he was a successful competitive swimmer and water polo player. In 2007, he was highly praised for his heroic actions saving a boy from drowning while working as lifeguard. To honor the life of Lucas Ransom, his family has established the Lucas Ransom Memorial Scholarship in an effort to fulfill his aspirations and aid future students who, like Lucas, aspire to help others and have a deep interest in the Chemical Sciences. Scholarship Overview The Lucas Ransom Memorial Scholarship will support upper division (juniors and seniors) undergraduate students who are declared Chemistry majors. Criteria for awards will be based on both financial need and academic achievement (minimum 3.3 GPA). Additional consideration will be given for active extracurricular involvement, including, but not limited to, participation in athletics, internships/volunteering, work experience, and/or other activities.
