Dear Friends,
Preparations for our Parish
Festival next weekend are in full swing.
It is a huge commitment for many of the
workers and I am so grateful to them all. Since a number
of the parking spots will be occupied by the rides, etc., it
would really be helpful if you were able to walk or carpool
to Church next Sunday. I hope you are planning to have
lunch and dinner at the delicious food booths. I will look
for you there; bring your friends and neighbors.
Proposition 73, which has been called “Parents
Right To Know” by its sponsors, would require notification
of the parents of a minor 48 hours before she obtains an
abortion, unless a judge determines that such notification
places her in danger. The Catholic bishops of California
concur fully in the guarantee of these fundamental parental rights. They strongly encourage us to offer our full support in promoting Proposition 73 as good public policy.
Keep Friday evening, October 21, free to accept
the invitation from Rabbi Vogel and Temple Aliyah to all
of us to attend their Friday Sukkot Service. It begins at
8:15 p.m. and will last about an hour and twenty minutes.
He has invited me to speak. Next week’s bulletin will have
a letter from the Rabbi inviting us all.

Masses this weekend: Pick up a copy of By What Authority? by Richard Gaillardetz after all of the Masses
this weekend. The book addresses questions regarding
what is meant by “Church” and who decides what “the
Church says.” Join us for coffee and discussion on Tuesday, November 15th at 7:30 p.m. in the Parish Center.

Justice & Peace Ministry “All things for ALL people!”
Please mark Sunday, November 6th on your calendars
as St. Bernardine parishioners have been invited to join
our brothers and sisters from Temple Aliyah as they celebrate their annual Mitzvah Day. One of the projects we
will be working on with Temple Aliyah on Mitzvah Day is
Project Chicken Soup. This project prepares hot meals
at a kitchen in the park La Brea area from 8:00 a.m. until
noon. The meals are then delivered to shut-ins, many of
which are AIDS patients, in the Valley.
We need volunteers to help cook and/or deliver meals.

Book Discussion Group Presents: A Reading of the Play
“Doubt.” Join us for a thought provoking experience!
Four local professional actors will read the John Patrick
Shanley play “Doubt” on Wednesday, October 26th at
7:00 pm. in the parish center. The Pulitzer Prize winner,
currently on Broadway, is a story of suspicion cast on a
priest's behavior. It raises questions about morality certainly, truth, decision-making, and consequences of behavior. Kyle Colvatti, Russell Milton, Gina Saadi, and
Moira Sinise will share their acting gifts with us. Bring
your friends, coffee and discussion will follow.

The purpose of the Virtus Program is to train adults
on how to protect all children. The training makes
you aware of the signs of child sexual abuse, the
methods and means by which offenders commit
abuse, and easy steps one can take to prevent child
sexual abuse. A session is scheduled for Saturday,

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION — Volunteers Needed!
We need your help as team teachers and assistant
teachers in our Religious Education classrooms.
Our children have come to class to hear about God and
there is no one to share the Faith with them. We meet on
Tuesday or Wednesday from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Father McNamara to Preach at Temple Aliyah
Plan to join Fr. McNamara as he preaches at the Shabbat Services on Friday Evening, October 21st at 8:15
p.m. at Temple Aliyah. In our continuing observance of
the 40th Anniversary of “Nostra Aetate,” the Vatican II
Declaration of relations with Non-Christians, we join our
neighbors as we work to implement this declaration.
“Love Your Neighbor as Yourself” is the theme chosen
by Rabbi Vogel and Fr. McNamara, for their reciprocal
pulpit visits. We were moved at the September 18th
Liturgy when Fr. McNamara celebrated and Rabbi Vogel preached. The roles will be reversed, at the synagogue. Join Fr. McNamara in this celebration of ShabBAKED GOODS NEEDED!

A.C.C.W Fall Meeting:
The West San Fernando District A.C.C.W. Luncheon/Meeting will be Monday, October 24 at Our Lady
of Lourdes, 18045 Superior St., Northridge. The
speaker will be Msgr., Patrick J. Hill whose topic will be :
“Am I Free to Marry Again?” Registration will begin at
9:00 a.m. Mass will be celebrated at 11:30 a.m. with a
catered luncheon to follow. Cost for the day is $10.

Backpack & Knit Hat Drive — Sunday, October 23rd
Co-workers of the Brothers of Charity, founded by
Mother Teresa, will be collecting backpacks and knit hats
for the poorest of the poor in the downtown LA area on
Sunday, October 23rd. Backpacks to carry the few belongings they might have, and knit caps to keep them
warm as autumn turns to winter. Please help by donating.

Our next General Meeting will be Sunday, October
23rd at 2:00 p.m. in the Parish Center. The theme will
be Halloween. If possible, please dress up in your favorite costume ~ prizes will be awarded for the Best
Costume. We will play Bingo. Appetizers and beverages will be served.
Join us for our Santa Barbara Culinary Institute Gourmet Luncheon and Tour of Oxnard’s Heritage
Square on Thursday, November 3rd. The bus will
leave St. Bernardine parking lot at 10:00 a.m. and will
return at approximately 4:30 p.m. The cost is $20 per
person. Call Angela Adams at 347-6709 for reservations
and choice of entrée. The last day for payment is Tuesday, October 25th. All are welcome! You don’t have
to be a Prime Time to join us.
Elections for the Prime Timers Board will be held in
January. We need volunteers and/or nominations from
our membership. Nominations will be taken at the
November 23rd General Meeting.

Senior High Youth Ministry Club B Senior High Youth
Night this Thursday, October 13th from 7:00-8:30 PM in
the Parish Hall! Club B is a music driven, high energy
evening of fun, games, worship and praise. B energized, B alive, B lieve, just B! Core Team meets this
Wednesday, October 12th in the Parish Office’s Staff
Conference Room from 7:00-8:30 PM. Participation in
Core Team is open to teens and adults who want to
take on planning, vision, and support roles in building
comprehensive youth ministry programming here at St.
Bernardine Parish.
Junior High Youth Ministry youth night next Tuesday,
October 18th from 6:30-8:00 PM in the parish hall. Registration is open year round and forms are available in
the parish office and at every youth night. Catholic
School 7th and 8th graders are encouraged to join us;
these are not religion classes. Come and join the fun!
Parent volunteers are needed to oversee and support youth running the youth ministry snack booth
at the parish festival next weekend. Please contact
the youth ministry office at 710-1662 if you can help
out for a shift.
