Twenty-fifth Sunday in
Ordinary Time
September 22, 2013
God . . . wills everyone to be saved
and to come to knowledge of the truth.
— 1 Timothy 2:4
Dear Parishioners:
Conniving, underhanded, thieving and untrustworthy – I hope you have never met someone who can be
described by these words. If you have been taken in by someone like that, then you have a huge challenge
to your ability to forgive and you deserve to be on “American Greed” – the TV show that spotlights people
like that.
Yet, the steward in the Gospel who fits this description is, to our amazement, praised by the master!
How can this be? What is going on here?
Of course the answer is that the master is praising the steward for his prudence not for his dishonesty.
And the steward was prudent. He foresaw the future, he anticipated what would happen to him without his
job, and he prepared for it.
It is the same prudence that makes us save for retirement, open IRAs, draw up wills, give someone
power of attorney over healthcare issues etc. etc. It is the same prudence that urges us to take care of our
health so that we can be healthy enough to enjoy retirement.
The message today is that we must have that kind of prudence in our spiritual lives – avoiding
temptation, praying daily, practicing the virtues, focusing on being holy, living our purpose to know, love
and serve the Lord and make him present in our world.
This month we celebrated Monsignor Murray’s 98th birthday and as he is quick to point out, he has
entered his 99th year! He has also hinted at prudence when he said: “If I had known I would live this long,
I would have taken better care of myself.”
Blessings to you all,
Father McNamara
A Prayer for
Priestly Vocations
Lord Jesus, You called chosen men
To be with you, to preach the
Good news of salvation and to
Have authority over the powers
Of darkness. Send your Holy Spirit
Upon the men you have chosen
For the priestly ministry. May they
Answer your call and follow you
With generous hearts. Amen

Back to School Season
Keep Your Children Safe!
Fall means back to school for children and
back to work for those who have been on vacation.
Amidst the hustle and bustle of this season, let us all
keep sight of the importance of keeping our children
and young people safe from danger. Safeguard the
Children Committees have been established in
parishes throughout the Los Angeles Archdiocese.
These committees help ensure that all children and
youth experience safe environments in all parish
activities and events. For more information, call the
parish office or the Archdiocese’s Safeguard the
Children Program Office, 213-637-7227.

“Women on The Journey”
We are a womens’ support group for women of all ages,
who need a place to tell their stories with a shared trust.
We pray together and try to deepen our spirituality to gain
strength for the journey ahead. We discuss life issues and
express our feelings and support each other in difficult
times. Most importantly we reflect on our role and mission
in todays world.
“To the Women on my Journey
Who showed me the ways to go and ways not to go
Whose strength and compassion held up a torch of light
And beckoned me to follow…
To the Women on my Journey
Who showed me how to life and not to live,
Whose grace, success and gratitude
Lifted me into fullness of surrender to God…
To the Women on my Journey
Who showed me what I am what I am not
Whose love, encouragement and confidence held me
Tenderly and nudged me gently…”
