If you have been taken in by someone like that, then you have a huge challenge to your ability to forgive and you deserve to be on “American Greed” – the TV show that spotlights people like that. Yet, the steward in the Gospel who fits this description is, to our amazement, praised by the master! How can this be? What is going on here? Of course the answer is that the master is praising the steward for his prudence not for his dishonesty. And the steward was prudent. He foresaw the future, he anticipated what would happen to him without his job, and he prepared for it. It is the same prudence that makes us save for retirement, open IRAs, draw up wills, give someone power of attorney over healthcare issues etc. etc. It is the same prudence that urges us to take care of our health so that we can be healthy enough to enjoy retirement. The message today is that we must have that kind of prudence in our spiritual lives – avoiding temptation, praying daily, practicing the virtues, focusing on being holy, living our purpose to know, love and serve the Lord and make him present in our world. This month we celebrated Monsignor Murray’s 98th birthday and as he is quick to point out, he has entered his 99th year! He has also hinted at prudence when he said: “If I had known I would live this long, I would have taken better care of myself.” Blessings to you all, Father McNamara A Prayer for Priestly Vocations Lord Jesus, You called chosen men To be with you, to preach the Good news of salvation and to Have authority over the powers Of darkness. Send your Holy Spirit Upon the men you have chosen For the priestly ministry. May they Answer your call and follow you With generous hearts.
