November 19, 2012 Dr. Jay Akridge Glenn W. Sample Dean of Agriculture Purdue University 615 W. State St. West Lafayette, IN 47907-2053 Dear Dr. Akridge: I am writing to apply for the Associate Dean of Extension and Director of the Cooperative Extension Service position at Purdue University’s College of Agriculture. My educational background and professional experience leading agricultural/rural research and outreach programs at the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City makes me well qualified for the position. I believe my experiences directing stakeholder relations and abilities in building collaborative working environments have prepared me to lead the extension programs and enhance Purdue University as a leading institution building a greater Indiana. As the Omaha Branch Executive, I am responsible for stakeholder relations and outreach programs in the state of Nebraska for the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City. I work closely with the Omaha Branch Board of Directors, a group of business, banking, and community leaders who provide their perspectives on monetary policy and bank management. I lead director recruitment and orientation efforts for the Omaha board as well as other advisory councils associated with the Federal Reserve. In addition, I guide congressional staff seminars in state of Nebraska and serve as the agricultural specialist in congressional staff seminars throughout the Tenth Federal Reserve District. I also direct agricultural stakeholder relations for the Bank by hosting roundtables and coordinating the National Agricultural Credit Committee, a semi-annual meeting of agricultural finance executives, who also meet annually with the NC-1177 regional research group to foster interaction with industry and academic leaders on agricultural finance issues. Moreover, I serve on multiple civic and university boards and am frequently invited to speak at company board of director meetings to help guide their strategic plans. In addition to my duties as Omaha Branch Executive, I direct the agricultural and rural research program at the Federal Reserve of Kansas City. Growing up on a dairy farm during the 1980s, I learned that healthy rural communities are those that provide economic opportunities both at the farm gate and on Main Street. Since my graduate studies at Purdue University, I have developed a broad research program focused on creating and disseminating knowledge, information, and insights on both agricultural and rural development. My agricultural research articles covering agricultural super-cycles, farmland values, agricultural trade, and value-added opportunities have been published in academic and Federal Reserve publications. In addition, I have published academic and Federal Reserve articles exploring rural development issues ranging from manufacturing plant locations, entrepreneurship, rural migration, demographics, obesity, and knowledge-based economic growth in rural communities. My applied research is the cornerstone of a robust outreach program that has positioned the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City as a leading voice on agricultural and rural issues. I frequently provide monetary policy briefings on agricultural and rural issues at both the Bank and Federal Reserve System level. I set the Bank’s vision and strategic plan on agricultural and rural issues and lead numerous agricultural research and outreach programs for both Bank and Federal Reserve System programs. I manage the Bank’s agricultural credit survey, published quarterly as the Tenth District Survey of Agricultural Credit Conditions, and the Federal Reserve System’s national survey on agricultural lending, published quarterly as the Agricultural Finance Databook. I am also the editor for the Main Street Economist, a bi-monthly publication discussing issues important to rural and agricultural stakeholders that has seen its readership rise 20 percent since 2007. In 2010, I developed the Bank’s annual agricultural symposium, which has quickly emerged as a premier conference discussing long-term agricultural issues. Through these efforts, I have gained recognition as a national leader on agricultural and rural issues. Policy makers, government officials, academics and the media widely cite my research. I have testified before Congress on agricultural finance issues and participated in conferences sponsored by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), United States Department of Agriculture, the United States State Department, National Council of State Legislatures and the Lieutenant Governors Association. I am a regular speaker at agricultural industry conferences and banking associations, such as the American Bankers Association and Independent Community Bankers Association annual conventions. In addition to my agricultural/rural portfolio, I am also responsible for Federal Reserve outreach programs in Nebraska, speaking to various business and community groups. Since 2007, my speech requests have increased from 60 to 110 per year. Media citations on my agricultural and rural expertise have averaged 20 per month over the past year, reaching national outlets such as the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, Financial Times, Atlantic Monthly and National Public Radio. In the past three years, I have been a guest on Fox Business News, CNBC, and Agri-Talk. My ability to build a collaborative working environment crossing multiple departments and divisions in the Federal Reserve System has been instrumental in my success. As the Branch Executive, I lead the strategic visioning process for the Omaha Branch, which includes a crossfunctional team of PhD economists, community development advisors, education specialists, and communications staff. Our team creates and implements outreach programs covering economic education, community development, and agricultural/rural programming. I have also partnered with my colleagues in the bank examination division to successfully position the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City as the leading agricultural bank regulating institution in the Federal Reserve System. I am passionate about building healthy, vibrant agricultural and rural communities. Building great communities requires developing people and visionary leadership. Education and research enhance the technical skills needed for success. Yet, business and community leaders clamor for people that possess the soft skills of communication, collaboration, critical thinking, strategic visioning, and leadership. These skills often emerge from experiential learning. Cooperative extension not only provides opportunities to transfer information and technical knowledge from applied research, but it also plays a larger role in developing these soft skills by being a laboratory of experiential learning across the state of Indiana. I believe my experiences interacting with business and community leaders on behalf of the Federal Reserve provides me with a unique set of research, outreach, and leadership skills to be successful in this position. People are the foundation for building vibrant agricultural and rural communities. Cooperative extension is uniquely positioned to develop the soft skills in leaders and transfer the technical knowledge and insights that are necessary to building a vibrant agricultural sector and healthy rural communities. In short, Purdue University’s Cooperative Extension Service is a cornerstone institution that is helping build a greater Indiana. I would be honored to assist you in this endeavor and serve the people of Indiana Attached is my leadership statement, my curriculum vitae, professional resume, and list of references. I look forward to talking with you about the position. Go Boilers! Sincerely, Jason Henderson Leadership Philosophy Jason Henderson Leadership is creating a culture that turns vision into action. To create culture, leaders must display the values they seek to instill in the working environment. In short, leaders must live the culture, lead by example and model the way. I live my life by five words – work hard, have fun, smile. Although most people understand the concept of hard work, people work hardest when they are able to apply their talents to their life’s passion. Amazing levels of accomplishment arise when people align their talents with their passion. When people are fulfilling their passion, life is fun. They are full of energy and a dynamic spirit arises from them. Then people smile, a contagious smile that engages people and draws them to join the mission. As a leader it is my job to help people apply their talents to their passions. It requires listening to the goals, values, and desires of people. When working in collaborative groups, it requires the ability to synthesize different ideas and find a common thread that weaves the passions of the team together. The ability to communicate this common thread or shared vision is essential. People need to see how they play a role on the team. From my perspective, a vision must be broad enough for inclusion, simple enough to embrace, and small enough to see progress. Leadership is also a collaborative relationship between people. By definition, leaders need a constituency of followers. Building successful teams in a collaborative environment depends on the ability to recognize the strengths people possess and placing them and the team in a position to succeed. Not only does it require the sacrifice of individual goals for team success, it requires the alignment of incentives according to shared benefits. Leaders also provide people the freedom to act. They remove barriers to action and innovation. Leaders must be willing to stretch conventional boundaries, partner, and take risks. To entice appropriate risk taking behavior, incentives must be aligned to reward appropriate risk and return relationships. A sense of trust and confidence is essential in collaborative work environments as teams must believe other team members will act with integrity and do the right thing even in tough times. Teams must also be based on service, helping others fulfill the shared mission of the team. Leaders need to align responsibility with authority. Responsibilities and actions need to be clearly identified for each team participant and each participant must be given the authority and freedom to complete their tasks. Finally, I believe leaders should focus on continuous improvement. Striving for excellence and completing a job well done are vital goals, and leaders must set high standards for themselves and those around them. To achieve continuous improvement, leaders must also provide feedback geared toward aligning a person’s actions and behaviors with the shared vision of the team. The feedback must be specific, targeted toward how people are achieving success and how they can enhance their skills to improve performance. From hard work to continuous improvement, leadership is the ability to inspire and motivate people into action. It is helping them envision how they can make their community a better place to live, work, and play.
