Pre Test Preparation The driving test is designed to establish whether you know the rules of the road, and have the knowledge and skill to drive competently in accordance with these rules. The test also checks to see if you can drive with due regard for the safety and convenience of other road users. In order to pass the driving test you should: (a) Study carefully the Rules of the Road booklet (b) Seek the assistance of a good driving instructor (c) Practice as much driving as possible on all types of road (d) Practice driving in different situations, including driving at night (e) Only practice on test routes when your test date is imminent. With the waiting times being 20-40 weeks you should book your test well in advance but only book it when you and your instructor think you are ready. If you take the test without building up some driving experience you will probably fail. Your preparation is vital as you need to show your examiner that you have done the work and are comfortable in the car when taking the test. Understanding your car, its reactions and ability to read the reactions of other drivers will help. All makes of car feel different when you sit behind the wheel so avoid changing cars just before your test. (The brakes may require more effort than what you are normally used to. A new car may react differently to the car you are used to and this may affect your test). Do a couple of mock tests with your instructor. If you can, start and finish at the test centre site to make it feel like the real thing. Make the exercise as familiar as possible to yourself so that it feels like a normal every day drive. Book your driving instructor to take you on a mock test immediately before the real one. This will set the tone and prepare you for the real thing, making you more confident and familiar with the flow of traffic within the area. Prior to your test date try to practice and strengthen your weak points. If reversing around a corner is something you dread, then practice this routine until it becomes one of your strongest skills. Again, if you don't put in the practice you are preparing to fail. If some part of driving turns into something you hate or dread (i.e. the hill start) you should tackle this by seeing it as a challenge. Practice Practice Practice. And remember every driver has gone through the same thing you are now experiencing. Before your test you should ensure your car is in good mechanical order. Check the following: Brakes Lights Tyres Mirrors Screen Wash De-mister Horn L-Plates Insurance Tax NCT (if applicable) If any of the above are not working properly or are not in order then see to it well in advance of your test. If you place additional stress on yourself because one of the above are not in order it will not help. Copyright C 2006 Irish Motoring. All rights reserved. Driving Test Technical Checks From the 14th of February 2005 if you are doing a driving test for category B (car), EB (car with trailer) and W (work vehicle) you must explain some technical checks as part of your test. After you have answered some questions on the Rules of the Road, the instructor/examiner will bring you out to your vehicle. You will be asked how a technical check would be performed on 3 of the following; Steering Wheel Reflectors Horn Engine Oil, Washer Fluid, Coolant Tyres Indicators Lights Brakes You should be aware of the location of the following items on your car. Steering Horn (Working) Brakes (In good working order) Tyres (The minimum legal tread depth in Ireland is 1.6 mm) Lights (All bulbs are working) Reflectors (Working, clean & visible) Indicators (Working, clean & visible) Engine oil (At the correct level) Coolant (At the correct level) Windscreen (Clean & visible with no obstructions) Washer fluid (At the correct level) Access to these items will require you to demonstrate how to open the bonnet and to close it securely. You may be asked to demonstrate how to check your oil level by extracting the dipstick (the dipstick should be located at the front of the engine. Find it, remove it, and wipe it with a clean rag or towel. Re-insert it into the hole then slowly remove it again. Check the level. The oil mark should fall between the two hash marks on the dip stick. If the oil is below the lower level you will need to top it up. You should be aware of this procedure as you may be asked to preform it as part of your test. Copyright C 2006 Irish Motoring. All rights reserved. Check out the answers to the above signs on the very last page Things to do on Test Day Book the day off work and clear your schedule so you don't have anything else to concentrate on. There is no point in rushing to and from your job when you are doing your test. Take the necessary time to prepare and leave the evening free to enjoy yourself once you pass. Start the day with a good positive approach telling yourself that this is the day you pass your driving test. There is no point in worrying yourself to death over a test that takes less than 1 hour to complete. You will know if you have prepared properly and you should have confidence and belief in your own abilities. Make sure you eat a good breakfast. Even though you may be nervous eating something is very important. Research has shown that the body needs food to concentrate. Make sure you dress appropriately. Dress for comfort and not for style. Your examiner wants to test your driving ability, not your fashion sense. Wear a pair of shoes or trainers that you feel comfortable in or the footwear you usually have on when driving. If you need to wear glasses, then wear them. Arrive in plenty of time. You should be present in the test centre at least ten minutes before the appointed time of your test. If you are late the test will be cancelled and the fee will be forfeited. You must bring your provisional licence and the letter of notification. Make sure your car is clean and in good working order. On the day, car requirements are as follows: The seat belts are in working order The tax and insurance discs are current The 'L' plates are visible and not obstructing your view Your vehicle is in a roadworthy condition (with an NCT Certificate if applicable) The indicators and brake lights are clean and clear You know how to work the secondary controls, such as wipers, demisters, etc The tyres are above the minimum thread depth (1.6mm) The seat head rests are in position Copyright C 2006 Irish Motoring. Driving Test Report Passed your Driving Test Having passed your test you should nevertheless continue to pay particular attention to the faults marked overleaf without neglecting other aspects of your driving. Failure of your Driving Test Failure of the test arises where you incur any of the following:1 or more grade 3 faults, 4 of the same grade 2 faults for a single aspect, 6 or more grade 2 faults under the same heading, or a total of 9 or more grade 2 faults overall. Up to a maximum of 4 grade 2 faults may be recorded for any single aspect. Grading of faults Faults are graded as follows:Grade 1 (Green) Minor, Grade 2 (Blue) More Serious, Grade 3 (Pink) Dangerous/Potentially Dangerous or total disregard of traffic controls Grade 1 faults do not affect the test result. A combination of 3 or more unanswered or incorrectly answered questions on the Rules of the Road/checks, constitutes a grade 2 fault. (Checks covers doors, seat, seat-belts and mirrors, and for motorcyclists, the helmet adjustment). 3 or more hand signals not demonstrated or incorrectly demonstrated constitutes a grade 2 fault. Inability to demonstrate 3 or more Secondary Controls constitutes a grade 2 fault. (Secondary controls include temperature controls; fans; air vents; rear-window heater; wipers; horn; windscreen washer, light switches and air conditioners where fitted. For H.G.V.'s it includes an exhaust brake/retarder where fitted). Not operating a secondary control as required during practical test can also constitute a fault. Inability to operate 1 or more HGV/PSV checks constitutes a grade 2 fault. (HGV/PSV checks covers power assisted braking and steering systems where fitted, and the special checks for buses - fuel shut-off valve, main switch, powered doors where fitted and the emergency exit, First Aid Kit, warning triangle, and the fire extinguisher) 'Alighting' includes securing the vehicle, and checking around before opening the door. Preparing for your next Driving Test In preparing for your next test you should pay particular attention to the items which have been marked. Further information on these and other aspects of the test are contained in the booklet entitled 'The Rules of the Road', which is available at Post Offices and some book shops, and in the leaflet 'Preparing for your Driving Test' which is issued with the acknowledgment of your application. Note Items on which faults occurred during your driving test are marked overleaf. The driver tester is not permitted to discuss the details of the test. Copyright C 2006 Irish Motoring.
