General Marking Guidance
•
All candidates must receive the same treatment. Examiners must mark the first
candidate in exactly the same way as they mark the last.
•
Mark schemes should be applied positively. Candidates must be rewarded for what
they have shown they can do rather than penalised for omissions.
•
Examiners should mark according to the mark scheme not according to their
perception of where the grade boundaries may lie.
•
All marks on the mark scheme should be used appropriately.
•
All marks on the mark scheme are designed to be awarded. Examiners should always
award full marks if deserved, i.e. if the answer matches the mark scheme. Examiners
should also be prepared to award zero marks if a candidate’s response is not worthy
of credit according to the mark scheme.
•
Where some judgement is required, mark schemes will provide the principles by
which marks will be awarded and exemplification may be limited.
•
When examiners are in doubt about applying the mark scheme to a candidate’s
response, the team leader must be consulted.
•
Crossed-out work should be marked UNLESS the candidate has replaced it with an
alternative response.

The answer does not need to be in the context of an early
year’s setting.
The learner may look at different routines for different
types of settings or select a particular routine care for
example nappy changing, feeding, sleeping and explain in
detail.
Setting-centered and not child/parent-centered. Receive a
balance of adult-led and child-initiated activities.
Meets their basic needs for fresh air, water, sleep, shelter,
security, food.
Promotes all areas of development for example routines
that interact with peers and adults promotes positive social
skills, cognitive skills prepares them for the next stage of
development.
Promotes good habits e.g. reading, drawing, cleanliness.
Children know where they are and what is expected of
them and when.
Routines are set that might go against parental wishes for
example not wanting child to go outside or napping at a
different time from set routine. This could lead to the child
feeling isolated or left out if not allowed to join in with
others because of parent’s wishes.
Impact on inclusivity and diversity catering for the masses
and not individuals and children at different ages/abilities.
Too much structure or constraint on time does not allow
children to express themselves or complete activities
leading to repetition of activities.
Learners may answer more specifically in terms of how
routines affect different areas of development.
