First-Year Connections and New College for Interdisciplinary Studies:
Seminars, Clusters and Block Courses
Hofstra’s first-year seminars, clusters and block courses are designed to get your college experience off to a great start. At the heart
of the program are small classes taught by distinguished faculty in areas of interest ranging from architecture to writing. Not only
will these courses introduce you to the intellectual and social life of the University, but – even if you are undecided about a major –
they will also help you satisfy the general education requirements for all majors.

Hofstra University Honors College (HUHC)
Through an innovative curriculum centered in the liberal arts and compatible with all majors, Honors College serves students
who perform at the highest academic levels in all undergraduate programs. The curriculum is designed to provide a wide-ranging
and multidisciplinary intellectual experience while fostering a sense of community and identity among the cohort of students who
share the HUHC experience. High-achieving applicants are invited to join Honors College. SAT scores for the middle 50 percent
of the fall 2008 Honors College class range from 1280 to 1360.
Transfer students are invited to join HUHC if they have at least 24 college credits and a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher.
Courses taken for college credit in high school are not counted in the 24-credit minimum.
Languages and Study Abroad Programs
The Department of Comparative Literature and Languages includes Arabic, Chinese, German, Greek (Ancient and Modern),
Hebrew, Japanese, Latin, Persian, Russian and Swahili. The Department of Romance Languages and Literatures includes French,
French Literature in Translation, Italian, Italian Literature in Translation, Italian Studies, Portuguese, Spanish, Spanish Literature
in Translation and Latin American and Caribbean Studies. Winter study abroad programs include Athens, London, and Venice.
Summer study abroad programs include China, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Japan and Spain.

Legal Education Accelerated Program (LEAP)
is a six-year combined B.A./J.D. program. Students
admitted into this program pursue a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) at Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences for three years
and then have the opportunity to complete a Juris Doctor (J.D.) at Hofstra University School of Law in three additional years.
Admission to Hofstra University School of Law is predicated on LEAP students earning a total of 95 semester hours in
residence (94 of them in liberal arts), meeting all requirements for the Bachelor of Arts degree, achieving a cumulative GPA
of 3.4 in course work toward the B.A., and achieving an LSAT score in junior year that is no lower than the median LSAT
score for the prior year’s full-time entering class at Hofstra University School of Law. The combined degree (B.A./J.D.) normally
takes a total of six years to complete, which is one year less than the typical law school graduate. Admission to this program is
open only to first-year students and is highly selective. Applicants must have a combined SAT score of 1200 (or an ACT
score of 27) and an overall high school GPA of 3.5 (or be in the top 15 percent of their high school graduating class) in
order to be considered for admission.
School for University Studies has two programs: the First-Year Program and the Transfer Program. Hofstra’s School
for University Studies focuses on serving students who have demonstrated their potential in nontraditional ways. Personalized

With state-of-the-art facilities and an award-winning faculty, Hofstra University’s School of Communication offers students the
opportunity to study art, theory, techniques and technology in three disciplines:

4Journalism, Media Studies and Public Relations
4Speech Communication, Rhetoric and Performance Studies (See description below.)

In addition, you will be able to visit WRHU Radio Hofstra University, which provides professional broadcast training to qualified
Hofstra University students. WRHU broadcasts more than 40 different musical and informational formats to the country’s 18th-largest
radio market on 88.7 FM, and webstreams to the world at WRHU.org.

Speech Communication, Rhetoric and Performance Studies
The philosophy of the Department of Speech Communication, Rhetoric and Performance Studies is based on the recognition that our
society is enmeshed in an all-encompassing, interdependent, and ever-expanding web of human and technological communication.
Students who major in or take courses in this department learn how the communication process works in interpersonal and group
settings, in formal organizations, and in public communication situations. The primary goals of the curriculum are to develop
competencies in observing, analyzing and evaluating communication practices; knowledge about human communication theory;
and communication skills in a variety of settings.
Speech-Language-Hearing Sciences
The Department of Speech-Language-Hearing Sciences in Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences offers comprehensive
programs of study for those who are interested in human communication and communication disorders. Within the context of an
education in the liberal arts and sciences, the major introduces students to the theories, methods and clinical practices in audiology
and speech-language pathology. In addition to faculty who are experts in the field, the department has numerous research laboratories
and an on-campus clinic designed to enhance opportunities for student learning.
