BV is caused by an imbalance of naturally occurring bacterial flora.
BV is not classified as an STD but may be related to sexual activity.1
Typical diagnostic criteria include discharge, odour, pH evaluation and
microscope examination microorganisms
The most common treatment is antibiotic therapy.
Diagnosis of BV by genetic testing is equally sensitive but more rapid
than conventional methods.3
Clinical Utility
u
An estimated 33% of women will contract BV at some time during their lives.2
u Studies show that subclinical iron deficiency is a strong predictor of bacterial vaginosis
in pregnant women.4
u A longitudinal study showed a link between psychosocial stress and bacterial vaginosis
independent of other risk factors.5
