POSTOJNA CAVE A KARST BEAUTY
The famous Postojna Cave is one of
the most beautiful subterranean caves
in the world. It extends over almost
22 kilometres of stalagmite- and
stalactite-covered passages, galleries
and chambers, shaped by Nature over
the course of millennia. You are
transported into the beautifully
illuminated and well-presented interior
of the cave by a unique cave train, the
only one of its kind in the world, and
expert guides are on hand to make sure
you enjoy your visit. A visit to the cave
is a special experience: cave formations
up to six hundred thousand years old
hang from the ceiling (stalactites), grow
from the floor (stalagmites), meet to
form pillars, fold over into curtains or
arrange themselves in sequences of
fantastic shapes. This is only possible
in the Karst underworld.

The Modrijan Farm offers you your first
contact with the rich cultural and
natural heritage of the Notranjska-Karst
area. The rapids of the river Pivka drive
the old millwheels of Modrijan's Mill.
By the mill stands a sawmill, carefully
restored so as to recreate the
appearance of the old Notranjska
sawmills, and a wine shop, decorated
with old agricultural implements.

CULINARY
PARADISE
The kitchens of this region have long
been fragrant with the various herbs
and spices that are added to soups,
minestrones, goulashes, sauces and
risottos. No feast could begin without
ham, be it the home-cured variety,
venison prosciutto or air-dried wild
boar prosciutto, only made in the
Notranjska Karst.
Other notable dishes are carter's
goulash or carter's roast (meat
marinated in wine and aromatic herbs)
and game dishes prepared in hundreds
of ways, with full, powerful flavours.
The local cuisine has always used
a great variety of vegetables: from cabbage, turnip, kale and kohlrabi to spinach, fennel and even nettles. If you don't like
polenta, a staple of the Notranjska Karst, or Notranjska aganci (made from barley, potato, buckwheat or corn), why not
try pasta or gnocchi, flavoured with nettle, spinach, chives or tarragon. Those who enjoy fine wines are also well catered
for. But before you start tasting the wines from Slovenia's finest cellars, you should sample one of the wide range of
herbal liqueurs.
And to end with, something sweet:

THE CAVE BELOW
THE CASTLE
Beneath Predjama Castle is a cave
comprising several sections with a
number of different entrances. Entering
this underground cave, where the only
illumination comes from portable
lamps, requires a certain amount
of physical fitness and courage.
Particularly interesting is the Passage
of Names, where the signatures of
visitors from the 16th century onwards
can still be seen. This connects the Main
Passage with Fiaenca, which has an
entrance above the castle and which
descends 600 metres into the underworld.
Its position and the temperature inside it
have made the cave a popular refuge for
bats - for which reason entry is not
possible during their hibernation

Passage was one of the main weapons
during the lengthy sieges of the castle.
This secret exit, which leads to the
surface from behind the old castle, is
37 metres long. Previously walled up,
today it is open once again.
ERAZEM’ MEDIEVAL
TOURNAMENT
Erazem's medieval tournament is a traditional event based on records and illustrations
from the 16th century. Once a year Predjama dresses itself in medieval finery and the
castle grounds are taken over by the lord of the castle and his subjects. The tournament
brings together bold knights, archers, swordsmen and horsemen, while the main
characters at the event are Erazem of Predjama, the most famous lord ofthe castle, his
friend Andreas Baumkirchner, the military commander who saved Vienna from the Turks,
and Bishop Piccolomini (later to become Pope Pius II), who consecrated the chapel in
Predjama. The meadow by the castle mill is the scene of a peasant festivity known as a
gauda, with eating and drinking, contests and entertainment suitable for the 'lower
orders'. Another special feature of the tournament are dishes prepared to original medieval recipes and served just as
they were half a millennium ago.

VIVARIUM
In the proteus projection hall you can see a multimedia presentation of the karst and
the karst underworld and discover the secrets of life in the sunless chambers and
passages of the cave. The first section of the vivarium contains a presentation of the
morphology of the postojna cave system. the second section – in the passage of new
signatures – has two separate parts: the vivarium and the speleobiological laboratory
(where research takes place). Here you can view specimens of the fauna of the
Postojna-planina cave system, among them its most famous denizens, the human fish
and the drobnovratnik cave beetle. you can also visit the vivarium during breaks between seminars and business
meetings, or before a visit to postojna cave . . .

These team building programmes are
aimed at groups who wish to put
themselves to the test in exciting,
stimulating games that are fun at the
same time. All the activities take place
in the natural environment, in
structures used in the past by the army,
from natural obstacles and trenches
to underground passages and a system
of tunnels inside underground bunkers.
You can choose from a range of strategic team building programmes or try out your rifle-shooting skills.
Military team building places the emphasis on strategic organisation, planning individual objectives as part
of a strategy, internal organisation, rational division of tasks, rapid decision-making and facing a competitive market.
