SAMPLE MOUNTING
OPTIONS CRYOSTATION
Sample mounting is a very important part of successful use
of any cryogenic platform. We offer several options to fit different applications.
Fixed Sample Mounts
• Thermal transfer
• Vibration
APPLICATION
NOTES
APP -215
The key issues to consider with your sample are:
• Bonding of the sample
to the mount
• Emissivity
• Window proximity
The standard Cryostation uses an easily
configurable sample mount which is mounted
to the cooled platform. This mount and
platform are easily accessed once the lid,
window assembly, and radiation shields
are removed. The sample mount includes
a post that can be mounted vertically or
horizontally to position the sample near any
of the windows. The figure below shows

• Moving the sample
several configurations of the internal sample
mount for various applications. The sample
mount base may be positioned at 45 degree
steps with respect to the windows. The post
in the sample mount has a flat end plate
with four holes which can be used to attach
the sample; as shown below. The small hole
on the side of the endplate is to attach the
sample thermometer.

Electrical
Sample Mounts
Two types of special sample
mounts are available which
provide electrical and thermal
connections to the sample.
Both have a sample bonded in the
center, with electrical connections
made to pins which can mate to
connectors. The CB12 version has
a central plate where the sample
is mounted and wire-bond connected to the pin set. The LCC28
version uses an LCC socket into
which a “chip” with sample is
inserted. This table provides a
comparison of the two styles.

User replaces plate and
board on sample post
to change samples.
Sample is bonded to leadless chip carrier (LCC)
which is inserted into socket
for electrical and thermal
connection to sample post.
Change-out time
Changing sample involves
disconnecting cables to
side pins and unscrewing
cap plate from post.
Changing sample involves
simply removing LCC “chip”
and inserting new one.
Summary
Better thermal connection
to the sample.
More wires and quicker
sample change-out.
Piezo Based Mounting
Montana Instruments supports piezo based translation of the sample. This may be done
from the platform level in the standard system if the series of stages is not too tall. We also
offer a “piezo” version with a recessed sample platform to mount a stack of piezo stages in
a “pocket”, shown in the image below. This was designed for the Attocube family of stages.
These stages are available in X, Y, and Z motion, and also rotation and tilt options. These
may generally combined in any order. If you purchase the piezo version, you may also
choose to use the standard sample mount without the pocket. For users that want to use
the standard sample mount, a raised platform and standard mount are provided. This view
shows the location of the standard sample mount in that setup.

Adjustable Mount
The 4100-1162 is an adjustable height sample
mount. The overall height is adjustable from
30.7mm to 43.2mm. The post is 11.1mm square in
cross section, and has our standard sample mount
bolt pattern on top and mounts to an attocube
101 stack on the bottom. The top piece can be
switched to a horizontal position to mount the
sample off to the side and allow horizontal adjustment. The position of the upper section is held in
place by a screw. The holes in the side of the top
piece are for mounting a thermometer.

Other Sample Mounts
Montana Instruments has a growing collection of
sample mounts that we have designed for various
applications. These are shown on the following
pages along with mounting patterns. This table
shows the mount type and image, some information
about the interface type, and the overall height.

This is intended to simply show the variety of styles
available, not to have the user choose the exact
size or interface pattern involved. If the user is designing a custom interface, please contact Montana
Instruments for help on product use. Drawings of
these parts are available for end users.
