Movement suggestions:
Students may sway in place to the beat. Pretend to hold a baseball bat beginning on the word "bat"
(measure 7, beats 3 and 4). Make a full swing on the word "game" in measure 9 on the first beat.
Character songs give opportunity for singing, drama and dance. Students enjoy acting out the
characters and moving to the music. Simple movement teaches coordination and rhythm, gets
the brain revved up for learning, is good for vocal health, and addresses the kinesthetic learner.
Incorporate simple props (baseball hat, plastic bat) and choose actors to “be” that character,
leading the rest of the class in the movement.
Sing: "Quincy Quarter Note Intro" song with movement.
Use Note Family and Friends recording.

Associating the bottom
number of a time signature
with a Land of Music
character helps children
remember what a time
signature “tells” them.
Quincy Quarter Note as Beatsetter.
When you see the numbers in the first room of a songhouse, those numbers tell
you what kind of a songhouse it is. The top number tells you how many counts or
beats are in each room of a songhouse. The bottom number tells you who the
beatsetter is. When you see a 4 as the bottom number, you will know that I, Quincy
Quarter Note, am the beatsetter. That means my quarter notes each get one beat or
count every time they appear in a songhouse room. A large C (
) in the first room of
a songhouse also means 44 time. You will hear my beat setter story in Series 2, Unit 5.
Quincy’s song is written in all quarter notes,
giving students opportunity to see, hear and
feel his notes. This approach is used in
songs for each Land of Music character.
Notice the lyrics. They reinforce the music
theory concepts. Setting concepts to music
makes them easier to learn and retain.

Use Note Family and Friends recording.

Movement suggestions:
March in place from measures 1 through 8 placing your hands over your head with finger tips touching to
form a kind of house. On measure 9, point to yourself. On measures 10 and 11, turn around and walk in a circle
counter-clockwise and hold up four fingers when singing about Quincy. On measures 12 and 13, walk in a circle
and hold up two fingers when singing about Helen. On measures 14 and 15, walk in another circle. On measure
16, put right hand out toward the audience, and on measure 17, hold index finger in the air when singing about
Willie.
Sing: "Quincy Quarter Note" song with movement.
Use Note Family and Friends recording.
Quincy Quarter Note and his stems.
Sometimes Quincy makes the
stems on his notes go up on the right
and sometimes he turns them over and
makes the stems go down on the left.
And remember, Quincy’s quarter notes are always shaded in.
Assignment: Quincy Quarter Note Activity Pages and Coloring Page.
Follow the coloring instructions on the bottom of the coloring pages.
Coloring sheets reinforce symbol recognition and
help students learn how to draw the symbols on their
own. Activity sheets reinforce symbol recognition and
rhythm concepts, and guide students in the beginning
steps of writing music.
