SAMPLE CAREER RESOURCES SORTED BY BLUEPRINT LEVELS AND COMPETENCIES A P P E N D I X F F A P P E N D I X BLUEPRINT FOR LIFE/WORK DESIGNS • Appendix F: Sample Career Resources Sorted by Blueprint Levels and Competencies D E S I G N S A Framework for Evaluating Resources L I F E / W O R K There are many excellent career development resources in Canada that can assist learners and clients to master the Blueprint competencies. This Appendix presents a sampling of some of the best of those resources, but the list is not exhaustive and is not meant to be inclusive. Its purpose is to offer practitioners a starting point for identifying resources that relate to the competencies they wish to emphasize with particular client groups in particular settings. In addition, the approach presented here for categorizing resources according to the Blueprint competencies can be used for any career development resource. As practitioners implement the Blueprint and become familiar with the competency framework, they can also start to evaluate existing and new resources in terms of their relevance to particular competencies at particular levels. B L U E P R I N T F O R For further information on evaluating career resources against the Blueprint competency framework, refer to page 21 of the Quick Reference Guide. INTRODUCTION TO CAREER RESOURCES 3 B L U E P R I N T On-Line Access to Career Resources To following web sites provide on-line access to virtually all career resources, programs and services in Canada. The last site, NOICC, provides access to virtually all American career resources. Each of these sites is updated on a regular basis. B L U E P R I N T F O R L I F E / W O R K D E S I G N S • A small group of career education teachers and career practitioners from across Canada formed a virtual team to produce the Appendix. In order to find appropriate resources, they contacted Canadian career information organizations and other providers of career development resources, including governments, private and nonprofit organizations. INTRODUCTION TO CAREER RESOURCES 5 B L U E P R I N T General Evaluation and Selection Criteria The team collected regional, provincial and pan-Canadian resources from these sources and chose those which: F O R L I F E / W O R K D E S I G N S • Reflect the issues and challenges the new economy presents to career transition and decision making; • Promote career resiliency (e.g., ability to manage change, understand new work alternatives, manage stress); • Promote incorporation and integration of adult life/work experience and life roles into the career process; • Promote a learner-centred approach to career building learning activities (e.g., hands-on, experiential, applied, group vs. individual activities); • Build capacity of individuals to be self-directed and self-reliant in career building; • Reinforce career building as a lifelong process; • Reflect gender and race equity; • Deliver in terms of increased mastery of multiple Blueprint competencies; • Where appropriate, are Y2K compliant; • Are reasonable in terms of cost/usage expectations; • Are Canadian, unless foreign resources are of higher quality and relevance. K-12 specific • A P P E N D I X F 6 • Are suitable for classroom use in terms of use, durability and packaging; • Are activity-based, hands-on and experiential rather than lecture-based, and they represent an applied approach to learning; • Draw students into groups and encourage co-operative learning, as well as providing for individual growth; • Incorporate family structures and kinship relationships other than that of mainstream European society; • Are relevant to the developmental needs of the student/learner; • Portray positive role models. INTRODUCTION TO CAREER RESOURCES F A P P E N D I X The Online Database The resources listed in this Appendix are organized in an online database that offers significant flexibility for searching and future updating. Users can search according to level and target audience; a Keyword Search function is also available along with an alphabetical list. D E S I G N S • It is worth noting that the project team used an online resource editing tool to input information about the resources they evaluated. This function allowed team members to work from their homes across Canada to add their information electronically to the database. The team completed the entire project in an electronic or virtual working environment, and all members enthusiastically commented on the unique and exciting nature of the project. L I F E / W O R K In the future, this resource database, utilizing the Online Resource Editor, will be customized to meet specific regional or institutional needs in a distributed format. The Online Resource Editor will allow resources to be added locally to a distributed database for specific purposes. If organizations are interested in learning more about this future service, they can contact the National Life/Work Centre. Database Format F O R The best way to access this Appendix is online since it has been designed for an electronic environment. Users can also download and print the resource list alphabetically (http://workinfonet.bc.ca/blueprint/bp_download.htm). Because of the length of this Appendix in its printed format, only information about the title of the resource, its source and related competencies is given. If users want to read the description of the resource, they will have to go to the online database for the information. INTRODUCTION TO CAREER RESOURCES B L U E P R I N T In addition, note that in the hardcopy format, the competency coding system for each resource uses two numbers. The first number indicates the level of the competency, and the second refers to the competency related to the level. For example, the HRDC publication Hi-Tech Job Search Tools: A Guide to New Technologies is coded with Competencies 3.5, 3.7 and 4.5, 4.7. These numbers indicate that this resource relates to competencies for both Level Three and Four. 7 B L U E P R I N T An Invitation to Contribute If you as a career practitioner have evaluated any resources that you judge to be especially useful in promoting the development of the Blueprint competencies, you are invited to add the resource to this database. You can use the Online Resource Editor (http://workinfonet.bc.ca/blueprint/default.htm) to input the information and code the resource according to the competencies. By adding your knowledge to the database, you will be contributing to the development of a unique and exciting resource that will assist practitioners and clients across the country. F O R L I F E / W O R K D E S I G N S • A P P E N D I X F 8 INTRODUCTION TO CAREER RESOURCES F A P P E N D I X BLUEPRINT FOR LIFE/WORK DESIGNS • Appendix F: Sample Career Resources D E S I G N S Instructions L I F E / W O R K Exemplary career resources that have been analyzed according to the Blueprint Levels and Competencies to which their developers have targeted them and are listed below. If you are working in a primary/elementary school setting, for example, look for resources coded Blueprint Level 1. If you are working in a junior high/middle school setting, focus on Blueprint Level 2 resources. If you are working in a high school setting, you will look at Blueprint Level 3 resources. Those working in post-secondary education or training settings, or with adults, should look at the resources listed under Blueprint Level 4. Check for the listings for the appropriate level, see if the competencies which your own needs analysis has shown to be high priorities in your school or agency are addressed by resources of interest to you.
