A historic landscape with views across the narrow strait that in
Viking times was known as the North Way – the way north – and the
way Norway got its name!

– Norway’s oldest royal seat
Harald Fairhair chose this as the site of one of his Royal Farms.
The historical remains here reveal ancient facts about the first kings
of Norway and the legendary figure who appears so often in sagas
and songs. The barons who controlled the vital ”Northern Way”
have left impressive works: mighty grave mounds, tall memorial stones,
and rich artefact beds. Beside the medieval church is a history centre
and, to the East, a reconstruction of a Viking Farm, open to visitors
in the summer months.

Olav’s Church, built by
Håkon Håkonsen in about 1250 AD, is a powerful
memorial to former greatness.

Virgin Mary’s Needle – the Sagas warn that Doomsday will be
upon us if ever the ”sewing needle” touches the church wall. The
clergymen of Avaldsnes – under cover of darkness – are said to
have chiselled bits off the point and thus saved the world. The gap
between the needle and the church wall is presently 9.2 cm.

Nordvegen History Centre, though it lies in the midst of
history, avoids spoiling the views of the Olav´s Church and its
carefully manicured surroundings, as most of the building
is below ground. Only the entrance and Karmsund face
are visible.

Kongsgård Royal Estate project

Excavations are underway at Avaldsnes! This two-year dig is part
of a research investigation to be concluded in 2017. The Avaldsnes
Royal Estate project will explore the place of the royal farmsteads
in the early days of the Norwegian realm, and their role
in the first 1000 years of the nation’s prehistory.

A Viking sheep, perhaps?
The grassy mounds between Olav’s Church and
Bukkøy Viking Farm are a fine example of how agriculture
shapes the landscape. And a reminder to greet the tireless
groundsmen – the “Viking Sheep”! Not content just to
graze, these hardy animals enjoy human company
and are pleased to say hello to passers-by!

Twist bread
Easy to make ...
4 dl flour
2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
2 tsp sugar
5 tbsp soy oil
1,5 dl water
Mix dry ingredients together, then add oil and water. Work to
a smooth dough and store in an air-tight plastic bag. Carve sticks,
twirl dough round stick, and bake on fire until dough comes
loose. Be careful not to char. Alternatively, bake bread around a
pre-fried sausage.
Another good idea is to add spices, grated cheese or sun-dried
tomatoes to the dough. For a sweeter bread, add chopped chocolate
to dough! Or swirl bread in a mix of sugar and cinnamon before
baking!

Visnes encapsulates the history of a mining community.
In the nineteenth century it was home to 3000 and one of
Norway’s largest copper mines! Evidence suggests that the
Statue of Liberty in New York is sheathed in copper from
these very mines. Walk through Director Charles de
France’s garden – the Fransehagen – and inspect the ruins
on the water’s edge. Or take the children to the Mine
playground – a popular attraction!

Summer Town
At the southern tip of Karmøy, with lighthouses guiding ships into
Skudefjorden and across the North Sea, lies the charm and old-world
flavour of Skudeneshavn, home of the sailing clippers. Founded on the
incredible success of the early 19th Century herring harvests, the town
grew at a startling rate. Even today, almost 130 original timber
homes and seafront wharves have been preserved in ”The Old Town”.

supper. Either catch them yourself in the
well-stocked seas around the island, or
simply check out the assortment at the

800 g fillet of cod
1 lime
1 red pepper
4 charlotte onions
whole pepper
salt
curry
ground red pepper
Preheat oven to 1800 C.
Grease a baking tin and add fillets, then chunky-cut onion and
red pepper. Season well with curry, pepper, salt and red pepper.
Drizzle with lime and bake until cooked through (approx 20 min).
Serve with fresh boiled potatoes.

Raking for crab?
Raking crab is one local pursuit that
combines a magical evening with the
reward of a scrumptious dinner. Take
your bucket and rake, powerful torch
and good spirits.
Fill a large pot with water, adding equal quantities of salt and sugar. Bring to boil.
Submerge crab in pot allowing 20 minutes to cook. Enjoy on a slice of bread with mayonnaise,
pickled gherkins and lemon juice. Delicious!

December. The best harvests are taken in September, when quality is also at its peak.

This interesting collection, situated in the fishing harbour, has displays of
many artefacts and photographs of bygone days, when Karmøy was a leading
fishing hub, and links with America were close. The Nora Wharf is one of just
a few salted herring factories still intact.

Karmøy Fishery Museum
Exhibits are on show here of how fisheries have developed from the first days of
marine engines to the present. The Saltwater Aquarium and Café are both
worth a visit. The striking visual appearance of the building is the work
of the Snøhetta architectural team, who also did the new National Opera and
Ballet in Oslo, and the Great Library of Alexandria, in Egypt.

This is the largest gathering of historic and
working boats of all categories in the West
