N O Oslo 20 January 2014 2 3 Dear friends Invitation to the 360 0 Symposium* 2014 Brødrene Dahl is looking to repeat last year’s success and hereby invites you to join us for another symposium to be held 19–20 March 2014. The main focus this year will be on an increasingly important topic for our industry: CLIMATE! At our past symposia the main themes have been Environment (2011) and Maintenance (2012). In light of our constantly changing weather and climate, we feel it would be appropriate to pick up where we left off in previous years by putting climate on the agenda. The sectors in which we operate, i.e. Water and Waste Water, hydroelectric power and Traffic Safety, are greatly affected by the climate. Our Water and Waste Water division is working to improve solutions for dealing with the ever increasing volumes of surface water in urban areas, on roads etc. In response to the increased risk of landslides and associated damage, the Traffic Safety division is having to focus more on emergency preparedness, warning systems and safety measures. Hydroelectric power offers a range of benefits as a renewable, clean, reliable and flexible resource. These are qualities that will become increasingly attractive in the years ahead, as focus on the climate continues to grow. In the knowledge that our climate has a significant impact on human well-being on this planet, we are certain that we will be able to put together a programme that will appeal to all our business partners. We hope you will be able to join us and look forward to seeing you at the symposium! Best regards, Brødrene Dahl Torbjørn L. This is because the density of ice is around 920 kg/m³, while the density of seawater is around 1,025 kg/m³. Around 90% of the volume of an iceberg will therefore be under water. n Iscebergs in the North Atlantic can usually be traced back to Greenland. A smaller source of icebergs is the Barents Sea. The icebergs drift past Bjørnøya and are forced north by currents, continuing their path to the north west of Spitsbergen. n Discovered in 1958, the largest known iceberg in the North Atlantic towered 168 metres above the sea – the equivalent of a 55-storey building. These icebergs originate from the glaciers in western Greenland and can have an internal temperature of -15 to -20°C. n n The Atlantic Ocean is home to very large icebergs with flat surfaces and vertical walls. They break free from the edge of the Antarctic inland ice sheet when it flows so far into the sea that the ice floats to the surface (shelf ice). These icebergs can drift as far north as 40° S. The largest of them can extend to 60 metres above sea level and reach sizes of several thousand km2 (Source: Wikipedia/ Store Norske Leksikon).
