Tutor note: This Sample Assessment Material is to be used for practice purposes
only.
The sample tasks in this document provide learners with the opportunity to practice the type of
tasks that they will undertake in the live assessment. These tasks are for practice purposes only
and must not be used to assess candidates.
The OCR Essential Skills Wales Communication qualification at Entry Level 1 comprises three
assessment components:
•
Speaking and listening – One task
•
Reading – One task (select one of the two available tasks)
•
Writing – One task
Evidence requirements:
•
Speaking and Listening Assessor’s Observation Record for one task, for each learner
•
Marked Learner responses to one reading task, for each learner
•
Marked Learner responses to one writing task, for each learner

Entry Level 1 – Speaking and Listening
Speaking and Listening – Entry 1 Sample Task - Food for …..
Learners are required to take part in a face to face discussion with another person in a familiar
situation.
The scenario should be used; however, the context (ie. the topic of the discussion) can be changed
to a situation/topic familiar to the learner eg food for a picnic, party, lunch, a diet etc. For practice
purposes the scope of this task can be widened to include a range of topics that are relevant to the
learners.
Guidance and direction should be provided by the tutor. A guidance sheet is provided below which
can be read to the learner to prompt their discussion. This task is not assessing reading and
therefore should not be given to the learner to read.
It may be necessary for the assessor to prompt members of the group to make sufficient
contribution in order to meet all of the evidence requirements. If the learner has not met all of the
evidence requirements they will need feedback and take part in another discussion.

Food for a party
The learner should be told they need to plan a party with a
friend. They need to have a short meeting to make plans.
They may want to talk about:
• where they want to go for the party and why
• where their friend wants to go for the party
• what they want to eat at the party
• what their friend wants to eat at the party
• how they feel about having a party
• anything else they think is important.

CE1.2 Entry Level 1 – Reading
The sample reading tasks in this document must be used as practice material only and must not be
used to assess candidates.
Learners must complete one task. One task must be chosen from the two provided.
The tasks for reading must not be amended in any way.
If the learner does not pass the task the alternative task must completed.
The learner is required to read the scenario and the texts for the task and answer questions which
relate to the texts.
Tutors must not read the scenario/ texts to the learner.
Tutors may read the questions to the learner.
Tutors may scribe the learner’s answers.
Answers to the reading tasks do not need to be written in sentences.
Spelling, punctuation and grammar are not assessed in the reading task.

Entry Level 1 – Writing
Writing – Entry 1 Sample Task - Win a TV
The learner is required to produce a draft (with evidence of checking) and one final short
document. The short document must contain at least two short simple sentences in a given
format.
The scenario must be used; however, the context (ie the topic of the sentences) can be changed to
suit the learner.
Learners must write their own sentences.
The document can be handwritten or word processed.
Dictionaries, including electronic dictionaries (spellcheckers) are allowed.
The learner’s written document should provide evidence that the learner knows how to:
•
write letters of the alphabet using upper and lower case
•
present information
•
use appropriate language
•
construct simple sentences
•
punctuate a simple sentence with a capital letter and full stop
•
use capital letters for personal pronoun ‘I’
•
spell correctly some personal key words and familiar words
•
produce legible text
•
make the meaning clear
•
check and where necessary revise the document to correct any errors.
