About This Title
Copying the Classics is a series of copywork books focused on building
Christian character. Available in a wide range of font styles and three
progressive levels, each book draws from alternating literature excerpts and
corresponding passages of scripture to develop a strong spiritual foundation
while practicing printing and handwriting skills.
Among the Farmyard People: Copying the Classics - Traditional ZB Style
Manuscript, Level 1 uses Among the Farmyard People as its literature
selection. Written by Clara Dillingham Pierson in 1899, this nature-based
title for children introduces young readers to farm-life while teaching
through character-building stories and examples.
Level 1 features line spacing of 5/8” and is appropriate for beginners who
have learned to form their letters (mastery is not required), and are working
with larger letters. One sentence is generally presented per lesson. No
models for tracing are provided as extensive research into the development
of neural pathways during writing instruction points to detrimental effects

How to Use This Book
This copywork book is most effective when accompanied by a family
reading of Among the Farmyard People. Bogart Family Resources has republished this title as an e-book (available to purchase as a separate title) in
an easy-to-read format with your young readers specifically in mind. The
delightful prose naturally integrates character and science instruction,
making this title an ideal choice for the elementary grades. The entire family
will enjoy this work when shared as a family read-aloud.
Copywork Lesson 1 is an opening verse that can be copied the day before
starting the combined study of the book and copywork lessons. It is a focus,
or key Bible verse that encapsulates the spirit and thrust of the upcoming
study, making an excellent topical memory verse that can be worked on
during the course of the study. Copywork Lesson 40 likewise provides a
closing scripture verse that can be completed at the end of the study.
Lesson 2 presents an excerpt from a chapter Among the Farmyard People,
Lesson 3 follows with a coordinating Bible verse that underscores the
meaning of the chapter. This pattern repeats for each chapter of Among the
Farmyard People in order of reading until the book is completed with
Lesson 39.

Quick reference charts with numbers and arrows are provided for upper case,
lower case, and numerals for children to use as they work on their lessons.
Simply print these out and have them available for children to glance at as
needed to refresh their memories.
Decorative illustrations are included and may be colored if desired. Space
for free-form drawings is also provided to encourage creativity, they appear
as empty ‘frames’ throughout the book. Blank template pages for additional
writing and drawing space are provided in the appendix.
If your children are in the pre and early reading stages, read through each
lesson with them before asking them to copy it. When their work is
completed, read their printed words, following along with your finger once
their lesson is finished.
To glean the most character building benefits from this copywork study,
reading the Bible verses in their larger context (verses prior to and following
the selected passage) is incredibly rewarding. Verbally prompt your children
to draw connections between the Bible verse and the chapter from Among
the Farmyard People that it correlates to. Provide additional illustrations
from your own life and the lessons you have learned in your walk with
Christ.
