It seems as though it was only yesterday that I was writing last year’s note from the th Director’s Desk. 2014 is a very special year for us as we will be celebrating the school’s 25 anniversary in style! th Now in our 25 year, the agent’s manual includes detailed information about our speciality offerings including our group programs, Junior Summer Course and Lacunza Summer Camp. We’re always happy to accommodate families wishing to study Spanish together during their vacation, we offer a Family Pack which allows parents to attend the Intensive20 course while their children join Junior Summer Course or Lacunza Summer Camp (July). Overall, this past year has been an exciting year for Lacunza International House (IH). Early in the year we were lucky enough to host the annual Spanish IH conference which saw over 16 school directors, teacher trainers and Directors of Studies come to San Sebastian to discuss current education trends, new teaching methodologies and share our experiences of teaching Spanish as a foreign language. It was an exciting few days and it served as a great reminder of what a fantastic network of IH schools we have in Spain. Following on from the conference, we have been continuously working hard to improve our courses options. Over the past year, we have introduced 4 new activity courses for cooking and sports enthusiasts. Our new Spanish+Cooking course is run in collaboration with the world renowned Basque Culinary Centre. Over 3 evenings, students learn how to make 6 recipes under the direction of a qualified chef before enjoying a tasting session. This professional grade course is adaptable for novice chefs! We also offer a 1 day cooking class during which students learn how to make paella before enjoying dinner with their classmates and the cook. Taking advantage of our beachside location, we continue to offer our Spanish+Surfing course to rave reviews from all of our students. We have also extended our water sports activities to include Spanish+Kayaking and Spanish+Stand Up Paddle. Held in the picturesque La Concha bay, students can spend their afternoons getting to know San Sebastian from a different perspective. On the sports field, we offer Spanish+Soccer which is held in a modern sporting complex, located just minutes away from the school. It’s run by trained instructors over 2 afternoons before culminating in a scrimmage (friendly match) at the end of the week. We hope that these additional courses will attract more students to northern Spain and San Sebastian, thus passing on additional commission to you. th So as we celebrate our 25 birthday, I’m reminded of why San Sebastian continues was chosen as the 2016 European Capital of Culture. We know all of our families and are familiar with all of our apartments so we know where would be the best place for each of our students. Alternatively, if you don’t have an agreement please let us know by email via: [email protected] . 6 03 GENERAL INFORMATION & PROCEDURES CHANGES If you have to change the dates, type of accommodation or any other part of the course, we can transfer your reservation to another date within the SAME year. The following conditions and charges apply: • Up to 1 MONTH BEFORE the course starts: NO CHARGE • 30 TO 15 DAYS BEFORE the course starts: Forfeit 30€. • 15 DAYS OR LESS BEFORE the course starts: Forfeit 60€ plus 1 week’s accommodation. Reduced prices may be applied if student’s increase their course load during the course i.e. from an Intensive 20 to an Intensive20 + 10 or an Intensive30. EXTENSIONS All course extensions must be made by the Wednesday of the last week of the course. For accommodation extensions, students must submit their extension request at least 10 days before the end of their booking. Reduced prices for long term discounts apply only when paid in advance, when a course is extended DURING the current course not long term discount will be applied. If a student extends their course and pays the balance directly to Lacunza IH, we will credit commission for the difference against the next payment. CANCELLATIONS Notification of all cancellations must be sent in writing to Lacunza IH. Cancellations received 1WEEK OR LESS before the course starts are NON-REFUNDABLE. If the cancellation is received before the course starts, the refund is: • 21 DAYS BEFORE the course starts: Full amount less 60€. • 20 DAYS OR LESS BEFORE the course starts: Full amount less 100€. • 20 DAYS OR LESS BEFORE the course starts WITH ACCOMMADATION booked: Full amount less 150€. WITHDRAWALS, LATE ARRIVALS & NON-ATTENDANCE We do not provide reimbursement for withdrawals, late arrivals or non-attendance of a course. In cases of serious misconduct where a student’s behaviour is unacceptable, disruptive or prevents the progression of the class, Lacunza IH reserves the right to expel a student without a refund. INSURANCE All EU citizens with the EHIC are covered Spanish social security. Please activate the service with local authorities in the student’s home country before they leave. Citizens of non-EU countries should purchase travel insurance before leaving home. Please contact us for recommended insurance companies and policies. PROBLEMS & COMPLAINTS Tell your students to let us know if they have any problems or complaints while they are here. They often fear that complaining will lead to embarrassment or unpleasantness but most problems arise from cultural misunderstandings or language barriers. These problems are usually easy to solve but we can only help if we know about it! 7 04 BASQUE COUNTRY BASQUE COUNTRY Basque Country is also known as Euskal Herria (Basque) or Pais Vasco (Spanish). It is divided into 3 legal and political regions: Autonomous Community of Euskadi (Alava, Bizkaia and Gipuzkoa), Autonomous Community of Navarra and Iparralde. Culturally it also includes the territories of Lapurdi, Zuberoa and Lower Navarra. All regions in Basque Country share a common heritage, culture, language and identity. BASQUE LANGUAGE Euskara (Basque) is a pre Indo-European language and has been in existence for several thousands of years. Preserved from generation to generation, it is a valuable part of the Basque heritage and represents one of the most unique parts of the Basque identity. All San Sebastian locals speak Spanish and most speak Euskara. In the street they tend to speak more Spanish which means students have no problems when socializing. CULTURAL EVENTS & FESTIVALS The Basque culture celebrates tradition, folklore and heritage. Throughout the year, a variety of different festivals take place such as the Zinemaldia International Film Festival and San Sebastian’s Semana Grande. Celebrations for local patron saints are also common as are rural and traditional fairs. During summer, Basque Country plays host to a number of famous festivals such as San Fermin in Pamplona, Fiestas de la Blanca in Vitoria, Aste Nagusia in Bilbao and Alarde (historical military parade) in Irun and Hondarribia. During winter there is Tamborrada (drumming parade), Carnival and San Sebastian Day. Basque sports are also celebrated throughout the year with professional competitions for Basque handball, in particular Cesta Punta, regattas and wood chopping. GASTRONOMY Basque gastronomy is one of the most highly regarded in the world due to its traditional dishes as well as the elaborate Michelin style. Basque Country has countless restaurants including a selection of Europe’s master chefs such as Arzak, Subijana, Berasategui, Arduriz, Arbelaitz, Argiñano, Arrambide and Canales. Also popular with students are the pintxo bars in “La Parte Vieja” which offer delicious snacks at very affordable prices. Held on Thursday evenings, Pintxo+Pote is a particular favorite as students can get a drink and a tasty snack for around 2€ THE GREAT OUTDOORS The sheer quantity of national parks and nature reserves provide ample opportunities for hiking and enjoying the outdoors. For mountain treks, the north of Navarra (Baztan, Salazar, Roncal and Belagua) provides remarkable views while coastal hikes along Bizkaia, Gipuzkoa and Lapurdi feature striking coastlines and picturesque fishing villages. As the cultural capital of Basque Country and the 2016 European Cultural Capital, the city has something for everyone. San Sebastian is well connected to Madrid and Barcelona as well as to Paris, London and other European capitals. San Sebastian is: 51 km from Biarritz (France) 99kms from Bilbao 82km from Pamplona 113kms from Vitoria 245 km from Bordeaux (France) 464 km from Madrid 571 km from Barcelona As San Sebastian is just 20kms from the French/Spanish border, its architectural style reflects a French influence. It’s one of the most popular Spanish tourist destinations due to the beaches, tradition, gastronomy and special events. However, due to its size, the city remains a safe and inviting option for international students. WEATHER The average temperature in winter is 8ºC. Students should bring warm clothes and an umbrella. Although snow is possible, it’s rare. In autumn and spring the average temperature ranges from 12ºC to 16ºC and a light pullover is recommendable at night. Summer has an average temperature of 22ºC with occasional days reaching above 30ºC. The water temperatures range from 9ºC to 13ºC in winter and 19ºC to 22ºC in summer. HOW TO GET TO SAN SEBASTIAN San Sebastian is well connected internationally and has a variety of transport options include plane, bus, train and even boat. The TGV from Paris (5.5hrs) also stops at Hendaye/Irun which is only 19kms from San Sebastian. From Hendaye you can take a local Euskotren train to San Sebastian. The station is next to the Hendaye train station and the train runs every 30mins. Please visit: www.poferries.com for more information on prices and timetables. 10 06 THE SCHOOL LOCATION Our premises are located next to a big park and are a 5min walk to the city center or a 10 min walk to the beach. The premises are specifically built for a language school and are located in a recently furbished building. The neighborhood features a number of bars, cafes and banks. TEACHERS & METHODOLOGY Our teachers are highly qualified and specialized in teaching Spanish as a foreign language. All of our teachers have done the Teacher Training Course for Spanish as a Foreign Language (ELE) run by International House. They work as a team (2 teachers per classes) and are supported by our Director of Studies and Teacher Trainer. We use the International House methodology which is very practical and demands constant use of Spanish in the classroom. Our language exercises are controlled and we extend our students’ language range by integrating new structures and vocabulary with known structures. CLASSES Each class is 45mins long. Our classes have a maximum of 10 to 12 students which facilitates a close relationship between students and personalized teacher attention. We encourage participation and communication which leads to a good progress rate. The language evaluation consists of 3 stages: 1. An initial assessment of the student’s Spanish when they arrive using a written and oral test. This allows us to place each student in the appropriate class for their level. 2. Fortnightly tests to check the students’ progress. 3. At the end of the course, each student receives a certificate stating their level of Spanish according to the Common Reference Framework. CERTIFICATE COURSES • DELE PREPARATION COURSE: A 6 week or 4 week course that consists of Intensive20 + 10 exam preparation lessons per week with 3 to 10 students per class. Students can take the DELE exam at the school. • BUSINESS SPANISH: Intensive20+5 or Intensive20+10 to prepare for the Business Spanish Exam organized by the Chamber of Commerce of Madrid during the individual classes. Students can take the exam at the school. PROFESSIONAL TRAINING COURSES • WORK EXPERIENCE: Language preparation course (min 4 weeks) as well as an internship in a local company (9 to 26 weeks). It provides students an opportunity to gain experience, develop business skills and enhance their CV. • METHODOLOGY & CULTURE COURSE FOR TEACHERS: For non-native Spanish teachers focused on the latest teaching methodologies and Spanish culture. Required Spanish level: MINIMUM B1 • TEACHER TRAINING COURSE: 4 week course divided between 65 theory hours (methodology, linguistic analysis and linguistic abilities) and 55 hours of work experience. Required Spanish level: MINIMUM C1 or NATIVE. COURSES WITH ACTIVITES (can be added to ANY course) • SURF: 1 hour surf class per day Monday through Friday with a maximum of 6 students per instructor. All materials are provided (board, wetsuit, insurance and a hot shower in the winter). If there are not enough people to form a group, the number of hours per week will be reduced accordingly. • COOKING (BASQUE CULINARY CENTRE): Unique course organized by Lacunza and Basque Culinary Center (BCC) is for those students passionate about Spanish gastronomy and the haute- cuisine of Basque Country. All classes are run by professional chefs and the university’s professors. All food, equipment, recipes, apron and a Basque Culinary Center booklet are included in the course price. • COOKING (1 DAY): Practical alternative to the BCC cooking course. Run by one of our trusted host families, the 2.5 hour cooking course is held in the family home. At the end of the class, the student is invited to eat with their classmates and the family as well as receiving a certificate of participation. • KAYAK: The course takes place in La Concha Bay and is run by a qualified instructor from the Fortuna Sporting Club. Held over 2 afternoons per week (Tuesday and Thursday), the course price includes all necessary equipment hire and access to the Club’s amenities (additional 2€ for locker hire). • FOOTBALL: The course takes place over 2 afternoons in Soccer World’s modern, professional facilities which are only a short walk from the school. The course culminates in a scrimmage (friendly match) at the end of the week. In order to preserve the high standard of teaching in our school, students are required to attend all lessons and do all assigned homework. HOST FAMILY We have all sorts of families: young couples, couples with children living at home, older couples with grown up children that visit on weekends. Most host families live in apartments and a typical apartment has 3 or 4 bedrooms, bathroom, kitchen and a combined living/dining room. Most have a balcony and some have outdoor terraces. More modern apartments are located in the city’s residential areas rather than in the center. Boarding options include: • Bed & Breakfast: Includes a LIGHT breakfast. The student is not allowed to use the kitchen. • Half Board: Includes a LIGHT breakfast AND dinner which encourages contact and conversation with the family. GUARANTEES Host families agree to provide the minimum conditions for each student (although they do more than the minimum): • A single, comfortably furnished room (unless a shared room is requested) with desk/table and adequate heating and lighting facilities. • Not to have students of the same nationality or the same language at the same time (unless requested). • A daily bath or shower. • Basic laundering facilities with a change of linen and towels each week. • A light breakfast and, if choosing a Half Board option, a substantial meal at night. • A key so that the student may let themselves in and out. • To treat students as family guests and act hospitably. ON ARRIVAL Students are expected to make their own way to their host families unless a transfer has been requested. Students will stay within a distance of 5mins to 30mins from the school (walking or by public transport). NOTE: If a student requests a double room, they need to come with someone to share it with. SHARED APARMENTS Students have their own bedroom but share communal facilities (kitchen, living room and bathroom) and housework with other students. The apartments are located 5mins to 30 mins from the school (walking or by public transport). Shared apartments can be shared with Lacunza IH students or locals. Please nominate your preference when booking and we will do our best to secure this option. The apartments are comfortably but simply furnished. They have kitchen with washing machine, fridge, cooking facilities, crockery and cutlery. There are basic heating and washing facilities but not a TV nor phone. They have 3 or 4 bedrooms (1 double bedroom) with 3 to 5 students per apartment. If there are 4 bedrooms the apartment normally has a bathroom and a separate toilet. PRIVATE APARTMENTS Private apartments are a good option for students coming together, families or people who wish to have more privacy. Apartments are usually rented for a calendar month although they may be available for a fortnight. We need to know the number of people and rooms required as well as arrival / departure dates. Once the course and accommodation has been confirmed, we will start looking for the best available apartment. Once selected, we will send the information, photos and location. After the student agrees to the apartment, full payment needs to be made and no changes can be made. We will then sign a contract with the owner on behalf of the student. ON ARRIVAL On arrival to the apartment, the student must sign a contract with the owner. The student must leave a 300€ deposit which will be refunded if they don’t damage the apartment. The minimum number of students per group is 10 and all students should have a similar Spanish level. We tailor the program for private group classes or the group can join our existing classes. The minimum stay for a private group is 5 nights (there is no maximum time!). We offer special conditions for groups such as free teacher’s accommodation, discounts during the low season or special offers during holiday periods such as “Half Term” (UK) or “Semaine Blanche” (France). Run over 12 weeks, the JSC takes advantage of everything the city has to offer with an activity program that includes an exciting combination of sports, culture, history as well as local festivals and events. nd nd DATES: June 2 – August 22 DATES FOR BEGINNERS: June 2, July 14, August 4 MINIMUM STAY: 1 weeks MAXIMUM STAY: 12 weeks TIMETABLE There are 5 language classes each day equal to around 19hrs of language classes per week. The typical timetable is: • 09.30 – 11.00: Language class 1 & 2 • 11.00 – 11.30: Snack break • 11.30 – 13.00: Language class 3 & 4 • 13.00 – 13.15: Snack break • 13.15 – 14.00: Language class 5 (interactive group project which students present as a performance on Friday ) • 14.00 – 15.30: Lunch • 15.30 – 19.30: Afternoon activity on Monday, Wednesday and Friday / Free time on Tuesday and Thursday • 20.00: Dinner and free time with host family LANGUAGE CLASSES There 5 classes per day held in groups of 4 to 12 students. Classes for junior students are geared towards engaging teenage students and use visual materials such as films, music and the radio. Students are also asked to search for information on the internet and in books which helps to familiarize them with Spanish vocabulary. We recommend that students dedicate at least 30mins each day to review the day’s class and do any homework that they have. ACTIVITIES The JSC includes 3 afternoon activities during the week and a full day excursion on Saturday. The students are supervised by a monitor who coordinates host families, organisation of activities and the students’ overall wellbeing. Students have 2 free afternoons (Tuesday and Thursday) and Sunday to spend time with their host family. ACCOMMODATION Students are placed in specially selected host families. This includes breakfast and dinner with the family as well as a packed lunch for the student to take to school. Spending time with the family ensures that the student becomes a real member of the household and also improves their Spanish. Most students continue to stay in touch with their host family for years to come! We recommend that our JSC students: • EMBRACE and participate in the lifestyle, diet and daily schedule of their host family. The food might be different to what they are used to eating at home but remember this is an international experience! • RESPECT the host family members and their rules including the night-time curfew and bed time. Keep the bedroom and bathroom clean and tidy and remember to unpack on arrival. • COMMUNICATE and let the family know if there is a change of plans and if they are going to be late or miss a meal. • INTERACT with the family and speak as much as you can. Use time at home with the host family to watch TV and listen to the radio to help learn more conversational Spanish. We promote an accepting atmosphere so campers can be themselves, learn and have fun while making international friendships. It is a fully equipped educational center including: • 4 basketball courts, 2 football fields, volleyball court, indoor fronton and gymnasium • Stage theatre, small movie theatre and TV room • Multi-media center with 30 computers all with internet access • Game room with 4 foosball tables, 2 ping pong tables, board games, magazines, sofas, chairs and tables • Cafeteria and kitchen • Classrooms • Dormitories • Camp Store with provisions such as souvenirs, postcards and snacks. • Camp Bank (open every day AFTER lunch): campers can deposit spending money, valuables and cell phones. Campers are supervised by camp staff 24hrs a day. The camp is equipped with fire alarms, fire extinguishers and sprinkler systems. Emergency exit procedures are discussed with campers on arrival and are displayed throughout the camp. There is 24hr professional medical assistance via an emergency room located only 5mins walking distance from the camp. The camp address, an emergency land line number and mobile number are included in the information pack sent to campers before camp begins. MEALS LSC serves 3 meals and 2 snacks each day. All special dietary needs and food allergies should be communicated BEFORE the camper arrives to ensure that they are appropriately accommodated. Each main meal is prepared by a professional catering service on campus and served in the campus cafeteria. LANGUAGE CLASSES Language classes have between 6 and 13 students and are held onsite from Monday to Friday. Classes begin at 09:45 and there are two 1.5hr class sessions each morning. Between the sessions there is a 20 minute break during which the morning snack is served. 22 12 LACUNZA SUMMER CAMP Each camper takes a language placement test on arrival which is used to determine their language proficiency so as to organize class placement. All course materials are provided and classes focus on grammar, vocabulary and conversational skills in a fun and interactive atmosphere. Each camper receives a LSC diploma certifying their completed work and detailing their attained language level at the end of their stay. ACTIVITIES Campers enjoy games and free time each morning during which teachers/monitors impart interactive games. The LSC Newspaper, Magazine Club and Theatre Club meet at the same time and campers are encouraged to join the clubs. The activity time allows campers to practice the language outside of the class room in a fun environment! For Full Day and Overnight campers, the afternoon activity program starts after lunch and are supervised by teachers, monitors and certified professionals (student/monitor ratio is 9:1 or 13:1 depending on the campers’ age). We also have full day excursions on the weekends for our overnight campers.
