Photo: Camilla Öjhammar Many ways to play golf. And swim. If your decision to go swimming depends on the temperature, you no longer have any excuse. Because the number of bathing options is virtually endless. The same is true for many activities in Skellefteå. The possibilities are almost endless. Take a look at the opportunities open to you. If things don’t go well with your nine iron (always blame the club!) swap it for an approach disc and you’re bound to see an improvement. Finding things to do in Skellefteå is not particularly difficult. You may, in fact, have trouble choosing. Take the matter of golf, for example. With its 27 holes, Rönnbäcken Golf Course is a renowned and popular golf course that suits most people. And the fact that Skellefteå can also offer miniature golf is not, of course, unique but it is enjoyable and courses with varying degrees of difficulty can be found on most campsites. It is the fact that we go one stage further that causes eyebrows to be raised. Acting as host for national and international tournaments every year, Discgolfterminalen is one of the best disc golf courses in Europe. And if your appetite for golf is still not satisfied, you can always try football golf in Bureå. You have just as many choices open to you when it comes to another popular summer activity - bathing. Staying in an area so close to the sea, it would be a pity not to take the plunge at one or more of the many seaside resorts in Skellefteå. A little closer and warmer, Falkträsket is the town’s popular, centrally-located natural outdoor bathing place suitable for people with disabilities. There is also an abundance of lakes and pools awaiting the timid bather. The next step on the thermal scale is Vitbergsbadet, a swimming facility with a wave machine and water chute, and if you want to go even further we have the recently renovated Eddahallen swimming pool complex. And the warmest of all, of course, are the hot tubs you will find at many of the bathing facilities in the area. ACTIVITIES Go-karting Go-karting is one of the summer’s most enjoyable distractions. The Fastec Ring, just outside central Skellefteå, happens to be one of Europe’s most up-to-date go-karting tracks, adding even more to the enjoyment. There is even a track for the little ones. Watercraft safari The mighty Skellefte river is a central and an important part of Skellefteå’s cityscape. It is scattered with small islands and islets, and is the starting point for wonderful walks and marvellous fishing. If you want to explore the river close to the city or our seaside coast in a slightly different way, a jet-ski safari in Boviken, for instance, is the activity for you. Boda Borg The word you should keep in mind when stepping into Boda Borg is “Quests”. This is how it works... You open doors. Photo: Patrick Degerman Events to remember. And memories that stay with you. The simple fact that we like creating new events has a lot to do with our intrinsic entrepreneurial spirit. And whenever we are offered an event, we are often praised for how wellorganised it is, whether it is a conference for Europe’s creative elite or a qualifying round for the Swedish entry for the Eurovision Song Contest. But the fact that we can and we want to is not the most important thing. No, the fact that we know how, that we know when and that you feel incredibly welcome – that is even more important. Big meets small. Old meets young. The past meets the future. Tastes meet each other and everyone meets everyone. We are certain you will find it quite infectious, this enthusiasm Skellefteå inhabitants have for meeting each other in happy circumstances. We’ll often get a little idea and in such a spirit of entrepreneurialism... well, of course events the Trästock festival One of Sweden’s most popular musical festivals. Photo: Stefan Dahlqvist Swedish Lapland’s meeting with the world. Food is nourishment. But it is also experiences and culture. Distinctive cuisines are cultivated in all corners of the globe. When they are fused they take on new life and new flavours, and brand new cuisines are born. One of the distinguishing features of Skellefteå’s cuisine is Västerbottensost. Just like home-grown and self-caught foods, simplicity and desire for innovation are key. As you would expect, many of the classic flavours of the Swedish Lapland region are also to be found in Skellefteå. We know perfectly well how to cook salmon and new potatoes, how to make dumplings and the best way to make use of elk meat. It is an important part of our cuisine. As in other parts of the world, cuisines that were once confined to a local area have spread throughout the globe. It is when these foreign cuisines meet that things get really exciting. Take, for example, elk kebabs or Västerbotten parfait. These are dishes you should enjoy in a restaurant with a view, in a traditional inn or why not in a boat on the river? The collision of the various cuisines explodes once a year at the Matfesten food festival when the people of Skellefteå come on a pilgrimage to challenge their tastebuds. Many may well turn up their noses at the statement that pizza should be considered cuisine. Especially in Sweden. But with a sprinkling of Västerbotten cheese … Or turn all the rules upside down and incorporate a hamburger with French fries… food Stiftsgården An oasis, embedded in greenery, situated by the Skellefteå river. There is a broad and varied range on offer, so it may take some time. Photo: Camilla Öjhammar The shopping trip continues. Skellefteå has made remarkable progress when it comes to shopping. From a typical small Swedish town with just the basics on offer, the city has developed into one of Norrland’s most exciting places to shop. Give it a go! Wander through the mall. Make a little detour. Be curious. Ask one of the locals. You’ll soon have that bargain in your hands. Most shopping in Sweden is characterised by Swedish and international chains. The range on offer is well thought out and in demand. There are two ways in which you can spice up the shopping experience. You can mix the broad range of products offered by the major retail outlets with unique, local variations on the specific and unexpected. The other way is to create accessibility and presence. In Skellefteå there are 168 steps between the three shopping malls in the centre of town. To create greater accessibility, there are two large commercial centres – one in the south and one in the north. Part of the experience of travel exists in the things you find in local shops. That thingamyjig you actually take home with you. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a souvenir. Memories can be tied up in a sweater, a pair of shoes or that window lamp you simply couldn’t resist. SHOPPING Spets och Ting For a beautiful interior. Here you will find a wide range of products for you and your home, including clothes, jewellery, curtain material, ornaments and more. We will provide you with service, tips and ideas. Te-magasinet A cosy shop filled with coffees, teas, wonderful gifts and decorative items. Welcome! Handelsgården A quality outlet with a large range of handicrafts from Swedish Lapland and the more immediate area. Many different materials and techniques are evident in the products on offer. The shop also sells delicacies such as arctic raspberries, cloudberries and sea buckthorn. One of the mini-suites at the Quality Hotel Skellefteå Stadshotell. Photo: Destination Skellefteå The art of sleeping without missing breakfast. Don’t think too much about where you will stay. Focus instead on how you will spend your time. You will then have already advanced a few steps in planning your trip. You will then have created the perfect conditions for an experience that’s perfect for you. And it is then that your imagination begins to run riot, as the possibilities take form and become reality. Where you sleep will also play a part in your memories of the trip. Imagine being able to create memories while you are sleeping. Sleeping late, too, for that matter. So start planning now. Ask yourself the question. But don’t set your alarm clock. Accommodation on a journey is often about convenience. Central location, close to everything and easy to reach from the main thoroughfare. Quick and easy jump into bed, soft pillows and hearty breakfast. Then quickly on your way to new adventures. Other times, your accommodation is part of the total experience. An unexpected place, an out of the ordinary room or really excellent service. Or perhaps your accommodation ACCOMMODATION Byske Havsbad A holiday paradise for the hole family. Words only say so much – most of it needs to be experienced. is part of the activity. That is the thing. That is what we’ve been thinking in Skellefteå. Few places have so little distance between the conveniences of a city and the experiences found in nature as Skellefteå. This goes for the whole of Norrland, of course, but it’s especially apparent here. Sit on a rock looking over the water and contemplating life’s mysteries, catch a lively salmon or find your first matsutake mushroom. Things that are well worth talking about, but which are at their best in their natural habitat. In reality. In our fantastic nature. Nature is not close to Skellefteå. It is Skellefteå that is close to Nature. To put it simply, a town in the midst of Nature. Take two areas that are absolutely glorious in the summer – Nordanå and Vitberget – both centrally located and extremely popular with the people of Skellefteå themselves. Salmon fishing, look-out points, walking areas, picnic spots, mushroom forests, sports arenas or whatever you want to do. Nature has set it all up. And you do not even need to go there. You are there already. And that is still only the beginning. The whole of the coastal strip is full of places well worth discovering – not least Bjuröklubb offering history and culture worthy of several excursions with memorable experiences where land meets sea. It’s never a bad thing when nature tastes of blueberries. Photo: Destination Skellefteå It seems obvious that the most heavily forested district in Västerbotten offers all the forest’s experiences. Ancient natural woodland and gigantic trees are found together with treasures such as berries and mushrooms, among which you will discover gems such as cloudberries, arctic raspberries and tricholoma goliath mushrooms, a Swedish variation on the Japanese matsutake. Let yourself be overwhelmed by everything that Nature has to offer you. And when after a day’s experiences you are longing for some creature comforts, the town is there – in the middle of Nature. nature Svansele dammängar Hay meadows along the winding Petikån stream. In 1825 a special technology was invented to dam the area and use ice and water to fertilise and purify the land. Today these meadows are unique. In springtime bird life thrives and in late summer hay is cut and dried like in the olden days. Vitbergsområdet A natural area close to town with forests of a wilderness character and wide range of outdoor activities. Enjoy walking in the natural environment, picking berries and mushrooms, go jogging or why not try the new mountain bike trail? Bjuröklubb Bjuröklubb’s history stretches right back to when the mountain rose from the sea 4,000 years ago. During the Bronze Age, when sea level was around 30 metres higher than today, there were temporary settlements here. INFORMATION Our Nature and Culture Guide is crammed with inspiration and facts on the theme of Nature. www.skelleftea.se/naturkulturguiden 29 nature Wilderness and ancient woodlands just around the corner. Photo: Conny Lundström Mushrooms. The Skellefteå region has many different types of forest and, consequently, a large variety of delicious mushrooms. In the pine heath forests you will find ceps, sand boletus, boletus luteus and the exclusive tricholoma goliath, also known as matsutake. The coniferous forests are home to yellow chanterelles, funnel chanterelles, white hedgehog mushrooms and pore fungi. In marshy conditions you will find Västerbotten’s province mushroom, the gypsy mushroom or rozites caperata. Those who are unsure about identification can go on a fungus foray with a mushroom consultant, see page 11. Ostviksfjärden’s grazed coastal meadows, P13. 15 km north of Skellefteå, the sea is visible from highway E4 once again. The area has been restored and now consists of 55 hectares of coastal meadows, grazed by cattle and sheep from early summer to late autumn. Two observation towers, one of which is accessible by wheelchair. A fascinating spot to see resting birds during the spring and autumn migrations, while summer guests include Lapwings and Curlews. Ancient remains. People have lived in this area since the inland ice retreated around 10,000 years ago and left traces of their existence in the form of ancient remains. The many pit traps bear witness to the fact that elk hunting was an important activity and, on the outskirts of the archipelago, seal hunters and fishermen left stone circle remains of structures and ancient labyrinths. A large number of impressive Bronze Age barrows are evident but not all ancient remains are as easy to detect. If you are interested, a great deal of information can be found at Skellefteå Museum. plants and animals associated with primeval forests. The nature reserve is only 100 metres from the main road and is an excellent excursion destination. Bjursjöaltaret, N18. One of the newest nature reserves in the area. The area includes magical ancient woodland, majestic views and the deep Lake Bjursjön which is said to be home to a mysterious aquatic creature. There are two peaks, Yttre and Inre Bjursjöaltaret. Yttre offers an endless beautiful view, 124 precipitous metres above Lake Bjursjön. Caves and caverns. In addition to the previously mentioned robbers’ cave. Trollkyrkan in Vebomark consists of passages between rocks and is some 20 metres long. Legend has it that the boulders were thrown here by a troll, hence the name. A more likely explanation is that the cave was created by inland ice, earthquakes and ocean waves. Lobergsgrottan in Bygdsiljum is 100 metres long, of which 70 are accessible. A story tells of a brave huntsman with a gun with a brass pipe who never missed his target. Before his death, he was said to have hidden his weapon in this cave. Although these caves are considered to be safe, we advise you to wear a helmet and don’t forget a torch! Bjuröklubb, R16. With its beautiful coastal setting and distinctive cultural environment, Bjuröklubb is an important area for people who want to enjoy the outdoor life. Here you will find an enormous area of flat rocks, extensive sand dunes, shingle banks and footpaths that take you through the forests to coastal “gems”. Brännberget, O16. The calcerous bedrock of Kågedalen has created the perfect habitat for the Lady’s Slipper, one of the largest orchids in Sweden, which grows prolifically in this area. Around ten other orchids can be found here, including the Calypso and Fragrant orchids. It is important to coincide your visit with the appropriate time of year: the Calypso comes into bloom between April and May, the Lady’s Slipper in the second half of June and the Fragrant at the beginning of July – just to name a few. Brännliden, N9. Nature reserve featuring fairy-tale ancient woodland with 250-400 year old trees draped with hanging lichen. Here you will find a number of Burehällorna, Q15. This nature conservation area is best reached by boat although the elevation of the land has created a narrow connection with the mainland so the area can also be reached on foot. Here you will find beautiful smooth rocks, sandy beaches and shingle banks. A perfect destination for sun, sea and sand or barbecues on a peaceful summer’s evening. Fällforsen, O10. In the middle of Fällfors, the Byske River bursts through a precipitous and narrow passage causing the water to rush through with extra turbulence. The salmon ladder on the southern side is the main fishway and, during the summer months, regular fishing demonstrations are given with large bag nets. On the northern side, a new fishway has been constructed with an observatory where spectators can watch through a thick glazed wall to see what happens beneath the river’s turbulent surface. Gärdefjärden, Q18. This was a bay 500 years ago but elevation of the land has created a perfect lake for birds with more than 140 different species recorded. The area is grazed by mountain cattle that play an important role in the management of the nature reserve. Paths adapted for people with disabilities, outlook tower with ramp. Jätteasparna forest, N15. Two kilometres south of Skråmträsk lies one of the most remarkable forest areas in Sweden. Broad, rugged trunks and extremely high, extensive tree canopy structures – over time, the thick rough bark of the giant aspens has played host to an abundance of lichens, mosses and insects. The still vigorous aspens are nearly 300 years old and probably the oldest examples in Sweden. Europe’s longest avenue of birch trees, N17. Between Avaborg and Bygdeträsk, a distance of approximately 10 kilometres, extends an avenue of birches with a total of approximately 1,300 birch trees. Planned in the summer of 1934, the area is now classed as a cultural environment of national interest. The Mareograph, P12. Furuögrund is the land elevation centre of Scandinavia with the land rising at a rate of 91.6 cm per hundred years. The mareograph measures the rise and fall of the water several times a day, which is unique as it is a manual instrument. Finnforsrövarnas grotta, M14. Tales of robbers in the Finnforsberget area are legion. One tells the story of Gunilla, a woman who disappeared from Medle at the beginning of the 16th century. When she returned three years later, she told how she had been taken captive by robbers in this cave in Finnforsberget. Marranäsvältan, Fällfors, O10. Just south of Fällfors village is Västerbotten’s Grand Canyon. An underground creek has created an enormous canyon, 160 metres long and up to 50 metres deep. Constant erosion means that the canyon continues to grow with every passing year. Petroglyphs at Finnforsberget, M14. As recently as 2006, a rock face with wall paintings was discovered at Finnforsberget outside Boliden. The figures depict some 15 fish as well as elk, making the find unique. The rock paintings are approximately 4,000 years old. The area is relatively inaccessible. Rare plants. The area surrounding Skellefteå is home to a jungle of ferns the height of a man and tall herbaceous shrubs as well as vascular plants that are rarely seen elsewhere in the country. Orchids such as the Calypso and Lady’s Slipper can be found in several locations and the rare “finnrosen” grows in protected conditions in one of our many nature reserves. The ravine landscape of the Skellefte River. There are several ravine forests between Klutmark and Krångfors, exciting landscapes the length of the creeks running out into the river. Two examples are Nysvidjeberget and Brubäcken. Right of Public Access. Thanks to the law, you can go virtually anywhere you like in the Swedish countryside and choose from a multitude of opportunities for enjoying the outdoor life in Sweden. But remember to take responsibility for the natural environment and wildlife and consider the interests of landowners and other visitors. More information can be obtained from Skellefteå Tourist Office. Skellefte River by boat. The river is quite an experience from its banks but even more so when sitting in a boat. You can sail on relatively large boats to Bergsbydammen, where the lock chamber measures 12 x 4 metres. The river trip takes you through a beautiful, wooded landscape. At several points, such as Småälvarna, you may well be tempted to take a detour that can only be navigated by small boats with outboard motors. In Skellefteå, you can moor in one of the guest stations on the north quay, between the first two road bridges. Detailed information is given in the route description available from Skellefteå Tourist Office. Skellefte River in the City, P14. The mighty Skellefte River is a central and important part of Skellefteå city. It is scattered with small islands and islets, and is the starting point for wonderful walks. From the city centre, through the cultural heart and Nordanå all the way to scenic hiking trails. Svansele water meadows, L12. Hay meadows along the winding Petikån stream. In 1825 a special technology was invented to dam the area and use ice and water to fertilise and purify the land. Today these meadows are unique. In springtime bird life thrives and in late summer hay is cut and dried like in the olden days. Tjärnbergsheden, O15. Halfway between Skellefteå and Burträsk you will find a natural forest that is one of the richest in species in the province. Covering 100 hectares, the relatively untouched forest landscape includes everything from meagre pine-clad hills to imposing primeval spruce trees and wetlands. The northern part of the forest features ancient trees draped with hanging lichen – some as much as 250 years old – while the southern part has marshier ground with equally old spruce. The area is relatively level and easy to walk in. Vitbergen, Kalvträsk, L15. The largest natural forest area in the whole of Västerbotten and a real wilderness. The area is extremely hilly and has knotty pines, broad aspens and lichen-covered spruce. You may be lucky and see a golden eagle as well as a capercaillie. There are several paths and tracks and the size of the area may well tempt you to rough it for the night and put up a tent. Vitbergsområdet, L12, Skellefteå. With forests of a wilderness character and a wide range of outdoor activities, Vitberget is an area just north of central Skellefteå where even the briefest of visits will take you through barren stony ground, dense spruce forest and mysterious bogland. The area also features sparse pillar pine forest and a couple of beautiful, black woodland meres. Vithatten, K10. The second highest mountain in the area and a nature reserve rich in bird life. Marshy ground rich in vegetation and a number of old barns and hay-drying racks. Dating from the 1800s, the area also features a settlement on the east side of the mountain that is associated with a number of thrilling ghost stories. Wild berries. During late summer and autumn, the forests are carpeted with a large variety of wild berries. One of the first forest berries of the season is the golden cloudberry which ripens at the end of July. Arctic raspberries grow in July and August along the beaches, ancient meadows and woodland paths. Raspberries, blueberries, lingonberries, sea buckthorn and cranberries are other delicacies waiting to be picked. See all maps on pages 48–49. 31 Is there a Västerbotten storytelling tradition? Torgny Lindgren at the Storytelling Festival in Skellefteå – The Storytelling Town. Photo: Destination Skellefteå Impression of expression. What makes culture really culture and what makes it interesting is in many ways down to the observer. And in Skellefteå it is worthwhile to both observe and experience. Be amazed, fascinated and lose yourself in some of the many expressions of culture. You will soon be immersed in a vibrant cultural life of impressions, expressions and variations you were not prepared for. The Nordanå Cultural Centre is clearly at the heart of the cultural life of Skellefteå. The complex includes Skellefteå Museum, Skellefteå Konsthall, Meijersamlingen and the Anna Nordlander Museum. In the same area, you will find Handens Hus, a forum for wood carvers and crafts people in Skellefteå. And every summer the centre is the venue of the Trästock music festival while an annual summer production is staged by Västerbottensteatern. It can be hard, of course, to put your finger on what created the rich cultural output of rural Skellefteå. But the urge for self expression has also given us a large literary legacy. Sara Lidman, Birger Wikström, P-O Enquist, Martin Lönnebo, Göran Lundin and Anita Salomonsson, to mention just some of our most widely read authors. But the Skellefteå region also has a long tradition of oral storytelling, both on stage and around the campfire. So if you want to step into Sara Lidman’s Hjortronland, wander through P O Enquist’s childhood memories or experience the narratives delivered at the Storytelling Festival, you can do this in Skellefteå – the storytellers’ city. A cultural personality has grown up in almost every town and village in the region. Many have taken this cultural legacy under their wing and created small museums and exhibitions around these individuals. Take a look at the map and find out how you can create your own cultural tour of the area. culture Museum Torfrid Olsson A homage to one of our leading contemporary symbolists. The exhibition shows naturalistic and fantastical art, often with a symbolic allusion to fertility or the devastation of evil. The Meijer collection The collection of approximately 200 works includes all media from oil painting to gouache, sculpture and graphic art. Every year the collection is rehung to bring out different approaches and themes. Björn Larsson A few kilometres before the road ends at Bjuröklubb lies Björn Larsson’s pottery. His works in both earthenware and stoneware are the result of 25 years of work based on a tradition that goes back thousands of years. But it was also thanks to the region’s lengthy tradition of verbal storytelling. So if you want to step into Sara Lidman’s Hjortronland, wander through P O Enquist’s childhood memories or experience the narratives delivered at the annual Storytelling Festival, you can do this in Skellefteå – the storytellers’ city. That’s what the statistics say. In reality, of course, the population is not evenly spread over the landscape. People are concentrated in the towns and cities, leaving the countryside for other things. From a visitor’s perspective, that is actually no bad thing. It means 2.2 inhabitants/square kilometre in the Skellefteå countryside, which means space. Plenty of space. Forests, lakes and streams, cliffs, marshes and open spaces combine to create a dynamic and unique arena for different experiences. But it isn’t just the nature. There is also a city just around the corner. A modern city on a small scale. It offers most of the things you would expect in terms of good community services, good transport links and a thriving restaurant and cultural scene. Skellefteå also stands out as a progressive city with ambitions for the future. Proof of this can be seen by the way we extract biogas from household waste, are leading the way in new, sustainable ways of construction with wood, while also harbouring a cluster of world-class creative media companies. But no matter how interesting a place is, the ability to get there is essential. Skellefteå Airport is the gateway to Swedish Lapland, with departures from Stockholm, Girona/ Barcelona in Spain and Karleby in Finland. Plus, of course, there are the night trains and long distance buses. So whether Skellefteå is a stopover or your final destination; whether you live in northern Sweden and want to see the world or are coming here from southern Europe, Skellefteå is your natural gateway to the world, to Swedish Lapland and to experiences.
