Bellevue West Football “A Champion pays an extra price to be better than anyone else.” “Are you willing to pay that price???” Winners Manual Philosophy of the Bellevue West Football Program H.E.A.T. (Heart Effort Attitude and Toughness) Our football program will be character based, relationship driven and strive to get the most out of everyone involved. We want players in our program that are motivated to be the best that they can be in all aspects of their lives. Our football program will focus on developing the characteristics of HEAT. Through participation in our program, we are shaping the future workers, husbands, and fathers of our society. Heart is at the forefront of our program. Relationships will be forged that will last a lifetime. Coach-Coach, Coach-Player, and Player-Player relationships will be built. The more the program means to a player or coach the more the individual will put into the program. Our players and coaches are expected to be loyal. Do not allow anyone to speak negatively about your teammates or coaches. You should not complain when the going gets tough, be the person that inspires the rest of the team to hang in there until the end. Heart is developed through the relationships built by staff and teammates, and through in-season and off-season commitment. When you are playing as hard as you can for the guy next to you and your coaches rather than yourself, the team will benefit. Effort is the next pillar in our program. Individuals rarely look back and wished they hadn’t worked so hard; most look back and wish they had worked harder. We will ask our players to give everything they have both athletically and academically. If you play as hard as you can and put forth a great effort all the time, we will have a great team. We expect to out hustle and out hit every team we play. We expect to be the best team in the state when it comes to effort on a daily basis. We are conditioned to “leave a little in the tank,” we will learn to tap that tank and reach the next level. Attitude is a very powerful attribute. We understand that each of us has the ability to bring people down or build people up. We will coach with and demand a positive attitude from our players. So much can be accomplished with “a glass half full” approach. We expect our coaches and players to be enthusiastic and expect great things to happen because of our preparation. Our coaches and players will show a passion for football, which will become contagious throughout the school and community. We expect our players to be role models both on and off the field. Toughness is the final characteristic our program will be built from. Football is a tough game for tough people and our boys will thrive. In no other sport do you get knocked down more than in football. This is true in life. You have to keep getting up with a more determined effort to be successful. Our young men will develop both mental and physical strength in our program. Our players will demonstrate physical toughness through the basic fundamentals of blocking and tackling. Mental toughness will be demonstrated with a focused determination and with our ability to deal with adversity. The more honor and respect among the team, the greater the team. To be successful our coaches and players must have great respect for one another. When your program is full of coaches and young people who are making a conscious effort to develop H.E.A.T, success will be an obvious by product. Our young men will enjoy success not only on Friday nights, but also in life. 2 BELLEVUE WEST FOOTBALL CODE OF ETHICS LIFE CODE OF ETHICS Caring for and loving your wife, children, and family. Player Signature:__________________________________________________________________ 3 Team Expectations and Guidelines It is the feeling of the coaching staff that personal and team conduct is best controlled by attitude and pride. However, it is difficult to have everyone with the same attitudes and pride, therefore expectations and guidelines are essential for a fair and equal program. Practice Conduct Be There Attend all practices, film session, AM weight training sessions, and meetings. If you are injured and cannot practice, dress in workout clothing and your helmet. You will complete your rehabilitation workout then aide your position coach. If you cannot attend practice, you must personally contact a coach before practice begins. Please schedule appointments and work outside of scheduled practice time. Unexcused absences will result in a loss of playing time and or Thunderbird reminders. Be On Time Do not be late for games, practice, film sessions, AM training sessions, or meetings. Players should do their best to schedule tutoring before school or during study halls. A pass from the tutoring teacher should accompany you to practice if you cannot make it on time. Be Responsible Proper equipment and clothing are required everyday. For safety purposes, no earrings or unnecessary headgear will be worn. Wristbands must meet NSAA requirements. Equipment repairs should be taken care of after practice that day. Athletes will not be given extra equipment. Equipment damaged due to wear and tear will be replaced. Athletes will be charged for any equipment that is lost. If weather is unsuitable for outdoor practice, we will practice indoors. Be sure to have a pair of tennis shoes available. Be Accountable To be successful you have to be willing to pay the price. Every decision you make has a consequence, some good, and some bad. When you make a mistake: 1) Admit it, 2) Fix it, 3) Don’t repeat it. Be Respectful Address all coaches properly; always include “Coach” before their last name. Use eye contact when talking with coaches. Respond, “Yes Coach” or “No Coach” in learning situations. Address teammates by their names not nicknames. Control your language. Do your best not to use foul language. When addressing the officials, always use “Mr. Official” or “Sir”. Be A Winner Every day you work as hard as you can, is one day you are closer to achieving your full potential as a football player. It doesn’t take any talent to hustle and give 100% effort. Finish training sessions, drills, and plays as hard as you can. Be positive!!! Enthusiasm and optimism are contagious. Let your actions and attitudes shape the character or our team!!! Game Conduct Be On Time Report to the team room (351) on time. If an emergency arises, contact the coach’s office at 402-8807430. 4 Be Responsible Make sure you have the proper uniform. We wear purple jerseys, gold pants, and team appropriate socks when playing at home. We wear white jerseys, gold pants, and team appropriate socks when playing on the road. For safety purposes, no earrings or unnecessary headgear will be worn. Wristbands must meet NSAA requirements. Helmets should be repaired and cleaned the day before the game. Any equipment repairs should be taken care of the day before the game. Be Accountable Thunderbird Reminders will be completed Monday at the conclusion of practice. Thunderbird Reminders are a series of log rolls based on unacceptable events from the previous game. Thunderbird Reminders will be administered as follows: Personal Foul Ejection =240 Yards =1000 Yards Be Respectful Players should be quiet and focused during team meetings. Hats should be taken off, ipods and cell phones put away, and feet should be flat on the ground. Inappropriate behavior will result in individuals being sent home. On buses, there should be limited talking on the way to the game. All players will shower and ride the bus home after the game. The trip home should be quiet in the event of a loss. Similar conduct should be followed in the locker room when we return and for home games. Players not involved on the football field should be ready to go at all times. Helmets should be on unless instructed otherwise by a coach or trainer. Effort should be made to stay the mandated three yards from the sideline. Support players should move up and down the field as the team moves. Be A Winner Only the captains will speak to the officials. If you have a problem with an opponent, inform your coach and the captain. Football games are won with the way you play, not with the way you talk. Do your talking with your pads. Win or lose, always shake hands with your opponent. Keep your helmets on until you reach the end of the line and meet with the coaches. Building Conduct Be Accountable Enter and exit through the north gym doors. Check your locker before you leave to make sure you put away all your equipment and personal belongings. Make sure you shut your locker door completely and lock your locker. Be Respectful Remove football cleats before entering the building. Do not clean cleats on the building walls. Throw all used tape, pre-wrap, ice bags, etc… into proper garbage cans. If a teammate leaves equipment out, secure it for him and return it the next day. 5 Personal Appearance Equipment Each student-athlete will be provided a helmet, chinstrap, shoulder pads, practice jersey, game jersey, leg pads, belt, game pants, and practice pants. Equipment that is damaged and unusable will be replaced. If equipment is lost, the student-athlete will be charged for the replacement equipment. Do not alter equipment in any fashion without coach’s permission. Examples include but are not limited to; trimming hip pads, kneepads, chinstraps, belts, or practice jerseys. All visors must be clear to meet NSAA regulations. Helmets should be worn at all times when on the practice field or the game field unless otherwise instructed. If permission is given to remove your helmet, care should be taken to make sure the helmet is sitting upright on the ground. Do not sit on your helmet or throw your helmet at any time. Your helmet is your most valuable piece of equipment. It should be treated that way!!! All cold weather gear must be school colors. Players will be checked out game pants for the season. Please wash all game attire in cold water. Please do not use bleach. Off-Season Training All football players will be expected to attend training sessions during the off –season. Football players are made in the off-season, they perform during the season. The Bellevue West Football Team Camp is strongly recommended for each of our 9th –12th grade football players. Passing League participants are by invitation only. You must be in the summer training session and be in good standing to participate in Passing League. Student-athletes will not be checked out equipment if they fail to complete the necessary paper work by the start of fall camp. Off-season “Code of Ethics” and Bellevue Public School violations will have consequences within the football program. “There are two options regarding commitment. You’re either IN or you’re OUT. There is no such thing as life in between.” –Pat Riley Varsity Letter Award To earn a Varsity Letter an athlete needs to compete in the equivalent of ten quarters. A quarter consists of ten plays. Ten quarters at ten plays = 100 plays*. An athlete can earn the equivalent of one quarter for all of the following: Attending the MG Camp Attending Team Camp 90% Attendance in Summer Training Session A senior that has contributed a positive effort both physically and mentally during practice sessions and games will be eligible to earn a Varsity Letter. 6 Bellevue West Football In-Season Eligibility The Bellevue West High School Football program is committed to building strong, positive character traits in our student-athletes. We have very high expectations of you as an individual and of our program as a whole. In-season starts from the time we begin summer team camp and continues until the final game of the season. Bellevue West Football “Code of Ethics” and Bellevue Public School Violations: The use of drugs or alcohol-dismissal for the remainder of the season Theft, Assault, or Vandalism-two games-possible dismissal from team Suspension from school, In-School Suspension-One game Absent from practice without prior notification-One game Detention or Office Referral-One half Bellevue Public School Policy and Code of Ethics violations outside of the football season will have consequences within the football program and will be addressed by the coaching staff. 7 Bellevue West Thunderbird Football Strength and Conditioning Michael Huffman [email protected] 8 Our Mission To provide athletes the means by which they can train consistently and sensibly over designated periods of time, in a safe, clean, and professional environment. Our goal is to improve athletic performance by focusing on improvements in strength, speed, explosion, agility, reaction, and flexibility. Our ultimate vision is to see Bellevue West High student-athletes as the biggest, fastest, and strongest competitors in Nebraska!!! “Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard!” The Program The program will consist of four organized workout sessions a week that take place over the course of the year. The calendar is broken into eight-week sessions except for the in-season session that continues the duration of the football season. There will be an in-season session, winter session, spring session, and a summer session. The program will take place on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday during the summer and Monday-Thursday during the school year. In the event that the school week is shortened, the program will run each day that school is in session. Monday Tuesday Wednesday Upper Body-Lower Body Pull Agility- Gorilla Training Lower Body-Upper Body Pull Speed and Explosion Training Upper Body-Lower Body Pull Agility- Gorilla Training Thursday Lower Body-Upper Body Pull Speed and Explosion Training Speed and Agility Training Choose a variety of training techniques to provide the student-athletes with the best possible activities to increase their overall speed and agility. Drills will focus on explosive starts, running technique, and change of direction. Depending on the number of student-athletes in session, coaches, and space available, choose three to four total drills and rotate the athletes through the stations. Plyometric Training Choose a variety of training techniques to provide the student-athletes with the best possible activities to increase their athletic ability. Plyometric training has been proven to increase both explosion and jumping ability. Depending on the number of student-athletes in session, coaches, and space available, choose three to four total drills and rotate the athletes through the stations. Static Stretch To retain full range of motion in our student-athletes, a full body static stretch should be completed at the conclusion or our workouts. This will insure our student-athletes ability to continue being effective in multiple sport settings and eventually pursuing a healthy adult lifestyle. 9 Player Development Off-Season Training All football players will be expected to attend training sessions during the off –season if they are not out for a NSAA sponsored sport. Multiple sport participation will be encouraged but football players in other sports will be asked to lift before school to insure completion of our strength and conditioning program. Football players are made in the off-season, they perform during the season. There will be a number of opportunities provided for our young men to become better athletes and to grow closer together as a team. While school is in session, focus will be on becoming bigger, faster, and stronger by participation in our strength and conditioning program. Assistant coaches will be asked to hold weekly meetings with their respective position groups to continue to work on the mental aspects of the game of football and to build stronger relationships with their position players. The summer is critical to our success as a football team. A leadership team will be assembled and worked with throughout the summer teaching our young men how to become leaders by example and vocal leaders. Our strength and conditioning program will run four days a week and include opportunities for our young men to become better at the fundamentals of football. Skill players will be asked to compete in local 7 on 7 leagues throughout the summer to fine-tune our passing offense and defense. The MG sponsored team camp will be attended by our returning lettermen and potential contributors and provide our coaches and players a platform to grow and evolve as a team. As the summer draws to an end, we will host the Thunderbird Team Camp where all 9th-12th-grade football players and coaches will come together and work on final preparations for the upcoming season. I have provided a summer calendar for 2014. Both players and parents will receive a copy of the summer calendar well in advance so they can make necessary plans to maximize their son’s participation in our program. “The time will come when the fall will ask what you were doing all summer!” 10 Thunderbird Nutrition Nutrition is an extremely important part to the development of an athlete. When an athlete works out, they are breaking down their immune system. Proper nutrition and adequate rest are how the athlete repairs his immune system and is able to gain strength. During weight lifting, tiny tears are made in the athlete's muscles. As these tears heal, the muscle increases in size and strength. In order for muscles to heal effectively they need proper amounts of nutrients. The concept of gaining muscle mass is simple. In order to gain muscle mass an athlete must eat in a calorie surplus. This means that he must consume more calories than he burns. This is very difficult for many student athletes because they burn an extremely high amount of calories. Due to their high levels of activity, athletes must continually eat throughout the day. Here is an example of what an eating schedule for a student-athlete that is trying to gain muscle mass should look like. Breakfast (at home) - Eating a big breakfast if very important because when a person wakes up their body is craving calories. Calories are equivalent to energy, so eating a healthy breakfast is essential to starting off a productive day. Option: Eggs, bagels, oatmeal, sandwich. Snack 1 (before lunch) - This can be a sandwich, protein bar, or some type of fruit or vegetable. It is best if this is easily consumed and can be brought to school in a book bag. Lunch - School lunch. If a student brings their lunch to school, they should pack food that will fill them up. Options: Sandwiches, Chicken, Turkey, Hamburgers, Yogurt, Cottage Cheese, Fruit, Vegetables, Peanut Butter, Pizza, etc... Snack 2 (before school is out, before practice) - This can be a sandwich, protein bar, or some type of fruit or vegetable. It is best if this is easily consumed and can be brought to school in a book bag. Dinner (at home) - This is whatever is prepared at home. Hopefully this contains a large amount of protein and carbohydrates. Snack 3 (before bed) - This snack is very important. As we sleep, our body repairs our muscles and immune system. Because of this, it is vital that we give our bodies calories before we sleep. If calories are not consumed before bed, the body will go into a starvation mode and it will begin to use muscle tissue for energy. Post Workout- Some sort of recovery drink should be consumed. Options: Chocolate Milk, Whey Protein Shake, Muscle Milk, etc… * It should be noted that drinking water throughout the day is imperative as well. Muscles are composed mostly of water and need to be hydrated in order to function at a high level. If an athlete becomes dehydrated they are more susceptible to muscle strains and tears. 11 Bellevue West Thunderbird Football Coach / Parent Communication Protocol First and foremost it is essential to understand the importance of the coach/parent relationship. Strong parental support for your program can be the difference in a good program and a great program. Parents should be comfortable communicating with the coaching staff and know that their concerns will be heard. The following protocol will be used in communicating with concerned parents: 1. The student-athlete should visit with his position coach and head coach about his particular concern. During this conversation, the student-athlete will be given all the information relating to his strengths and areas for improvement. If the student-athlete is still feeling that he is not being treated fairly, then proceed to step two. 2. The parent and student-athlete will set a meeting time for discussion with his position coach and head coach. As in life, there is a proper time and place for everything. Please do not approach a coach directly after a game or directly after practice. The meeting will include both the parent and the student-athletes. Please do not request to speak to the coaching staff without your student-athlete’s awareness. We are trying to teach them to be better men, we will not do things to lose their trust. Dismissal Policy The Bellevue West High School Football Program will operate under the guidelines and expectations of the Winner’s Manual and the code of conduct set up by Bellevue Public Schools. If any student-athlete displays a discipline problem that creates team disorder, the student-athlete will be suspended from the team until a meeting can take place between the student-athlete, guardians, head coach, and activities director. Upon return, if behavior is still disruptive, the student-athlete will dismissed from the team indefinitely. 12 Bellevue West Football Community Service At Bellevue West, we will ask our players to perform two to three service projects a year. We try to emphasize that community service does not have to be simply raising money and donating it to a worthy cause or organization. Community service can be the giving of time, talent or labor to a worthy or needy recipient. We define community service as giving back to the school and surrounding community through volunteerism. Service is doing something for somebody else without any expectation of getting anything in return. It is a selfless way for teams to give back to their communities. Our goal is to develop the complete student-athlete. Community service not only benefits the recipients of the good deeds but also benefits the team by infusing leadership skills to the players. This creates team building, organization skills, and memories outside of the games. I would also contend that the athletes end up benefiting as much as the recipients. It is our opinion that our student-athletes will be far more likely to give back to others around them through volunteerism as they transition into adulthood due to these experiences. 13 SUNDAY BELLEVUE WEST FOOTBALL MAY 2014 TUESDAY WEDNESDAY THURSDAY 1 MONDAY FRIDAY 2 SATURDAY 3 9 10 16 17 Weights 3:35-4:45 Jr. T-Birds 4:30-5:30 4 5 Weights 3:35-4:45 6 Weights 3:35-4:45 7 Weights 3:35-4:45 Mother’s Day 12 Weights 3:35-4:45 18 19 State Soccer Finals 25 13 Weights 3:35-4:45 20 FB Team Meeting 6:30PM Cafeteria 26 MEMORIAL DAY 27 10th-12th Combine 9:00-12:00 Weights 3:35-4:45 Jr. T-Birds 4:30-5:30 Jr. T-Birds 4:30-5:30 11 8 14 Weights 3:35-4:45 15 Weights 3:35-4:45 21 22 23 24 Last Day of School FB Parent Meeting 6:30M Cafeteria Baseball Finals MG Camp Equipment Checkout 2:00PM State Track State Track 28 29 30 MG Camp 9:00-12:00 MG Camp 9:00-12:00 Graduation 31 MG Camp 9:00-12:00 14 BELLEVUE WEST FOOTBALL JUNE 2014 SUNDAY MONDAY TUESDAY 1 2 MG Camp 9:00-12:00 3 MG Camp 9:00-12:00 WEDNESDAY 4 THURSDAY Weights 7:00-9:00 8:30-10:30 Weights 7:00-9:00 8:30-10:30 Passing League @West 8:15AM 8 15 Father’s Day 22 29 9 10 Weights 7:00-9:00 8:30-10:30 Weights 7:00-9:00 8:30-10:30 9th Grade Weights 3:15-4:45 9th Grade Weights 3:15-4:45 16 17 Weights 7:00-9:00 8:30-10:30 Weights 7:00-9:00 8:30-10:30 9th Grade Weights 3:15-4:45 9th Grade Weights 3:15-4:45 23 24 Weights 7:00-9:00 8:30-10:30 Weights 7:00-9:00 8:30-10:30 9th Grade Weights 3:15-4:45 9th Grade Weights 3:15-4:45 11 Weights 7:00-9:00 8:30-10:30 Passing League @Bryan 8:15AM 18 Weights 7:00-9:00 8:30-10:30 Passing League @West 8:15AM 25 Weights 7:00-9:00 8:30-10:30 Passing League @West 8:15AM FRIDAY 5 6 SATURDAY 7 13 14 9th Grade Weights 3:15-4:45 12 Weights 7:00-9:00 8:30-10:30 9th Grade Weights 3:15-4:45 19 BW Gridiron Classic 2:30PM Eagle Hills 20 21 27 28 Weights 7:00-9:00 8:30-10:30 9th Grade Weights 3:15-4:45 26 Weights 7:00-9:00 8:30-10:30 9th Grade Weights 3:15-4:45 30 Weights 7:00-9:00 8:30-10:30 9th Grade Weights 3:15-4:45 15 SUNDAY BELLEVUE WEST FOOTBALL JULY 2014 TUESDAY WEDNESDAY THURSDAY 1 2 3 MONDAY Weights 7:00-9:00 8:30-10:30 9th Grade Weights 3:15-4:45 6 13 20 27 7 Weights 7:00-9:00 8:30-10:30 Passing League @West 8:15AM 8 9 VACATION 4th of July! 10 11 12 18 19 25 26 Weights 7:00-9:00 8:30-10:30 Weights 7:00-9:00 8:30-10:30 Weights 7:00-9:00 8:30-10:30 9th Grade Weights 3:15-4:45 9th Grade Weights 3:15-4:45 Passing League @West 8:15AM 9th Grade Weights 3:15-4:45 Rimington Camp Rimington Camp 14 15 Weights 7:00-9:00 8:30-10:30 9th Grade Weights 3:15-4:45 9th Grade Weights 3:15-4:45 21 22 Weights 7:00-9:00 8:30-10:30 Weights 7:00-9:00 8:30-10:30 9th Grade Weights 3:15-4:45 9th Grade Weights 3:15-4:45 BW YOUTH CAMP 28 BW TEAM CAMP 8:00AM10:30AM BW YOUTH CAMP 29 BW TEAM CAMP 8:00AM10:30AM SATURDAY 5 VACATION Weights 7:00-9:00 8:30-10:30 Weights 7:00-9:00 8:30-10:30 FRIDAY 4 Rimington Camp 16 Weights 7:00-9:00 8:30-10:30 SERVICE PROJECT 11:00-1:00 23 Weights 7:00-9:00 8:30-10:30 17 Weights 7:00-9:00 8:30-10:30 9th Grade Weights 3:15-4:45 24 Weights 7:00-9:00 8:30-10:30 9th Grade Weights 3:15-4:45 BW YOUTH CAMP 30 BW TEAM CAMP 8:00AM10:30AM BW TEAM CAMP 8:00AM10:30AM Card Kickoff 11:00AM 31 BW TEAM CAMP 8:00AM10:30AM Card Blitz 10:30 VAR TEAM CAMPING @ TWO RIVERS 3:00PM 16 SUNDAY BELLEVUE WEST FOOTBALL AUGUST 2014 TUESDAY WEDNESDAY THURSDAY MONDAY FRIDAY 1 RETURN FROM TEAM CAMPING 8:00AM SATURDAY 2 VACATION 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 VACATION VACATION VACATION VACATION VACATION VACATION VACATION 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 6:30AM7:30AM Lift (10-12) 6:30AM7:30AM FBP (10-12) 8:30-10:30 FBP (10-12) 3:45PM6:00PM 3:45PM6:00PM VACATION FB Practice First Day of First Day of Begins School (9th) School (10-12) 6:30AM6:30AM6:30AM7:30AM 7:30AM 7:30AM FBP(10-12) Lift (10-12) FBP (10-12) 3:45PM6:00PM 17 24 31 4:00-6:00 Lift &HUDL (Two Deep) 18 3:45PM6:00PM 19 3:45PM6:00PM 20 3:45PM6:00PM 3:45PM6:00PM 3:45PM6:00PM 6:45AM7:30AM Lift (10-12) 6:45AM7:30AM HUDL (Two Deep) 6:45AM7:30AM Lift (10-12) 25 26 21 22 3:45PM5:15PM 8:30-10:00 FBP (10-12) Gatorade Scrimmage 6:00 RES/FR 7:00 JV/V 27 28 3:45PM6:00PM 3:45PM6:00PM 3:45PM6:00PM 3:45PM5:15PM 6:45AM7:30AM HUDL (Two Deep) 6:45AM7:30AM Lift (10-12) 6:45AM7:30AM Dinner 5:45PM 23 10:15-11:00 Meet and Greet 29 Varsity FB 7:00 30 JV FB @PLS 9:00AM 17 BELLEVUE WEST FOOTBALL MG Team Camp Information Sheet LOCATION: The MG Team Camp will be held on the campus of Bellevue West High School in Bellevue, Nebraska, Northwest High School and Burke High School in Omaha, NE.
