AWARDS DESCRIPTIONS AND CRITERIA
SALES PINS
Sales pins of various denominations are available to all students. They are awarded for attaining
personal sales levels of $100; $200; $300, $400, $500, $750 and $1000.
The student receiving the highest sales in the province will have their top pin given out at the Awards
Gala. All Students reaching the $1000 sales pin level will have it presented at the Awards Gala.
100% ATTENDANCE PIN
All students who have attended all regularly scheduled meetings throughout the
year will receive this award. These pins are presented at the final Shareholders'
Meeting.
PROGRESSIVE PIN AWARDS
The Progressive Pin Awards are a series of pins that recognize students when
they have reached certain standards of sales, attendance, knowledge and
leadership within their companies.
Achiever Award Criteria:
 80% attendance
 $50.00 in sales or ten products (whichever is less)
 Recommendation of Advisor team
This award is open to all students who complete the year who have been
members for a minimum of 10 weeks. Officer standing is not a prerequisite.
This award can only be received once.

Junior Executive Award Criteria:
 Elected as Executive Member (for a minimum of 10 weeks)
 80% Attendance
 $80.00 in Sales or 16 Products
 Advisor Team Recommendation
 Student Award Recipient
This award can only be received once, however it can be received in the same
year as the Student Award Pin.
Executive Award Criteria:





80% Attendance
$100 in Sales or 20 Products
Elected as an Executive (for a minimum of 10 weeks)
In the final year of the Company Program (i.e., Grade 12)
Involved in all aspects of the company (i.e., management, production,
sales)
 Advisor Team Recommendation
 Recipient of Student and Junior Executive Awards in previous years
The above-described awards are progressive which means they are acquired
from year to year. Once the student receives a pin, he or she is not eligible for
the same pin again. However, students may apply for the same award the next
year if he/she did not obtain it the first time.
Students may earn the Student and Junior Executive Awards in the same year;
however, they cannot receive the Executive Award until their final year (unless
grade 12 is their first year with JA, then they only receive the first two pins).
The Student and Junior Executive Awards are presented at the final
Shareholders' Meeting. The Executive Award is presented at the Awards and
Recognition Gala.

COMPANY MERIT AWARD
This
award is presented to one student from each company. It will be
presented to the non-executive student who has demonstrated a strong
commitment to their company and has displayed personal growth throughout
the program. The Advisor team and or teacher/Advisor select the winner
from each company.
Criteria:
 Non-executive member
 At least 80% attendance
 Has shown personal development through the year
 Strong team member
 Respected by peers
 Has made a strong personal contribution towards the
success of the company
 Advisor/Teacher Nomination
 Has shown personal development through the year

SALESPERSON OF THE YEAR
The Salesperson of the Year Award is awarded to the student with the best
overall sales performance for the year. This may not mean the highest sales $$.
Criteria:
 Minimum of 10 Products Sold
 80% Attendance
 Advisor Team Recommendation
Selection Process:
Each company submits a nomination of their best salesperson to the Advisors.
The selection is a two-step process. The JA office will review all applications.
Finalists will be selected, and will move on to level two, an interview by a panel
of judges. In the interview, finalists will sell their products to a panel of judges.
These judges will choose the final winner. Please remember that we are
looking for the best salesperson, not necessarily the one with the highest sales.
The Salesperson of the Year award will be presented at the Awards and
Recognition Gala.

NEXT AWARD
Based on sponsorship development opportunities students will be sent to the
NEXT Generation Leaders Conference that will be held for one week in
August.
All meals, accommodation fees and delegate fees will be covered in full.
Criteria:
 Outstanding performance in the Company
 Able to participate in an intense conference environment
 Outstanding representation of the program
 Advisors' Nomination
 Minimum of 80% Attendance
 Minimum of five products sold
 Minimum of 70% on Quiz
 Basic knowledge of current events
 Have made a significant contribution to the success of their company
 Be articulate and competent
 Completion of essay on assigned topic
Selection:
 Finalists will be selected from the applications and interviewed by a
panel of judges from the business community.
 Results will be based on program performance, interview, quiz and essay.
Nominees must submit a 500 word essay on the following topic:
“Being chosen to represent JA of Nova Scotia at NEXT is not only an
honour, but a great responsibility especially as it will be hosted at Trent
University in Peterborough, Ontario. Discuss how you could best
represent Nova Scotia at NEXT.”
The winners will be announced at the Awards and Recognition Gala.

AWARDS DESCRIPTIONS AND CRITERIA
OFFICER AWARDS
There are seven elected positions in every company. Each elected officer is
eligible to apply for the Officer Award that corresponds with his or her office.
There is a $500 scholarship with each award. The individual Officer
Awards go to the most outstanding students holding the following offices:
President of the year
VP Finance of the year
VP of Human Resources of the year
VP of Marketing and Sales of the year
VP of Production of the year
VP of Digital Technologies of the year
VP of Safety, Health and Environment of the year
Criteria:
 The applicant must be an elected officer for a minimum of 10 weeks of
the current program year
 Minimum of eight products sold
 Active participation in production
 80% attendance
 Advisor Team Recommendation
Selection:
Students apply for the officer awards. Applications must write a quiz relevant
to their position. The results of this quiz and the officer's overall performance
including attendance and sales are combined with the Advisor’s
recommendation to determine the finalists. A panel of objective judges from
the business community interviews the finalists in each category. The interview
accounts for 60% of the final decision.
Each winner will receive a $500 scholarship.
The winner of each officer award is announced at the Awards and Recognition
Gala.

OUTSTANDING
FIRST YEAR STUDENT
This award is to recognize the student, in his or her first year of the Company
Program, for outstanding "all around" performance.
Criteria:
 Student must be in his/her first year of the program
 Student must not be graduating in this current year
 Must be an active member of the program for at least 10 weeks of the
program
 Strong, positive recommendation from the Advisors
 Minimum 80% attendance
 Minimum $50 (or 10 products) in sales.
 Completion of an essay
The Advisor recommendations should be based on the students’ participation
in JA events and his or her demonstration of responsibility and leadership. The
judging will be based on the results of the quiz, Advisor recommendations and
an interview done by a panel of objective judges from the sponsoring
organization.
On a separate piece of paper, please answer the following question: “What did
you personally learn from your first year in JA and how did you
contribute to your company’ overall learning?”
The winner will be announced at the Awards and Recognition Gala.

CATHERINE COLSON
MEMORIAL AWARD
Established in the memory of Miss Catherine Colson who was an active
member of the Halifax-Dartmouth Company Program. During her years of
participation, she was the recipient of the Outstanding Student Award and a
delegate to CANJAC (now known as NEXT).
Criteria:






High school senior graduating in the current school year
Have participated in the after school Company Program
Enrolling in full-time studies at an institution where tuition or
fees are required
A high school transcript must be supplied
Selections are made based on the applicant's participation in
the program
Scholastic ability, leadership and career potential
The members of the Colson Family review all applications and select the
winner. The award winner will receive a $500 scholarship towards postsecondary education, and will be announced at the Awards and Recognition
Gala.
This award provides for a payment to the recipient and the chosen
institution jointly upon written confirmation of registration.

STUDENT AMBASSADOR
This award is to recognize an outstanding student who will officially be
designated as a student ambassador, to promote, encourage and grow company
program in your school. One student from each group will be chosen to be an
ambassador and will work closely with the program manager in their area in the
following year.

 Student must have completed at least one full year of Company Program
 Must be an active member of the program for at least 10 weeks of the
program


Your business plan must be typed and presented in a professional manner.

Junior Achievement of Nova Scotia
The aim of this award is to have your community become more aware of
whom you are and what your JA Company is. The winner will be the best

To be eligible for the Most Improved Company of the Year, the company must
meet the following criteria:
 The company must show a profit
 The company must pay for all services, goods or materials received
 The company must pay wages, salaries and commissions for the full year
 Show an improvement in board meeting presentations and audits
 Recommendation from the Advisor Team
The company will show that there has been a major turnaround in at least two
of the following ways:
 Increased attendance from approximately 50% to 80% between week 6
and week 18.
 Improved profitability through a significant change in officer leadership,
marketing and/or record keeping
 Overcome a major obstacle such as high turnover in officer team but
managed to end the year with a profit, high attendance, good morale, etc.
 Overall improvement resulting from combined efforts of Advisors,
Officers and Directors working together as a team
Finalists will be judged by the Program Managers based on the above criteria.

To become a semi-finalist in the Company of the Year contest, the company
must meet the following criteria:

Pay all overhead costs, at no less than the rates outlined by JA
Equal distribution of sales – each member must sell at least two products
Wages paid at a minimum of $0.50 per hour
Salaries paid at a minimum of $2 per week

Finalists will, ideally, have their President, two Vice Presidents, two directors
and one Advisor interviewed by a panel of judges from the business
community. The interview will count for 60% of the final decision. Ideally,
success of the company will be a result of the efforts of the whole company
working together and not the result of a few officers or Advisors.

This award recognizes the Advisor team, which has consistently demonstrated
all the elements of a strong working team and in doing so provided an

It is a chance for the students to recognize and thank the volunteer team for

Nomination Procedures:
In order for an advisor team to be considered for this award, the nomination
must be submitted by the Directors of their company. The President, one
other officer and two Directors of the company must sign the nomination
application.
CRITERIA: In order to be considered for this award, nominated Advisor
teams must have met the following criteria:
1) As a team have at least 80% attendance
2) Demonstrated a consistent team role model for the students (i.e. prepared
as a team for company meetings, team decision making, shared responsibilities,
etc.)
3) Demonstrated a keen and sincere interest in motivating students
4) Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills, both within their Advisor team

RECRUITMENT VIDEO
Every year Junior Achievement of Nova Scotia enters high schools around the
province to recruit students to participate in Company Program.
The scholarship sponsor, Equals6, challenges current JA students to develop a
maximum of two-minute video that can be used in school presentations and
online opportunities to recruit students to participate in Junior Achievement
Company Program.
Equals6.com is a social network that helps students achieve their career and
academic goals by connecting with employers, schools and scholarship
opportunities. Employers and schools partner with Equals6 to identify toptalent students.
Criteria:
 Student can be from any grade
 Must have sold at least 3 products
 Minimum 80% attendance
 Must be an active member of the program for at least 10 weeks of the
program
 Video must be produced in a format that can easily be transferred to
YouTube, played in a CD or DVD player
