Trench Heater GSK
Radial Fan-Assisted Convection
Apart from the principle of natural convection, the trench
heaters GSK work with a proportion of forced convection
generated by a radial fan. In most cases, GSK serve for
covering short-term remaining heat demands (quick heating)
in cases where primary heat sources, as e. g. floor heating
systems and air conditioners, cover the basic demand. With
a corresponding power layout, they can also be used for the
full heating of rooms.
Convection Principle
Areas of Application
GSK – Radial Fan-Assisted System Convector
1 The GSK consists of a two-chamber system. The air blown
in is trapped in the lower chamber. The patented air guide
system of the GSK devices guides a controlled flow of air
into this chamber.
2 An airflow is injected, aspiring the cold air (cold-air drop)
which is falling down, thus accelerating the natural convection. The air coming from the fan is distributed on a
System Trough length of up to 5000 mm.
3 Heated air creates a barrier against cold drafts and heats the
room.
The GSK can be applied in all situations where a fogging or
the formation of condensed water could be possible, or in
areas requiring quick heating. GSKs are predominantly used
in screed areas as well as in raised floors in front of full height
glazing facades in modern, transparent architectures.

Surfaces
With the Designer Grille, Möhlenhoff offers a creative cover
grille solution for System Convectors in first-class quality. Distinctive mark of the Designer Grille: the elegant appearance
due to narrow, rounded bar profiles in all surface variants. The
omission of bar joints gives the Möhlenhoff grille its characteristic, sophisticated appearance.
The Designer Grille is offered in the versions Linear Grille, and
Roll-up Grille. Both Designer Grille versions are built in the
same constructive way.
Apart from optimum functionality, it is after all the extensive and unique Möhlenhoff finishing options which sets new
scales with respect to design possibilities.
Designer Roll-Up Grille
In front of full height glazing facades,
the Designer Roll-Up Grille is the optical change-over between floor covering and the facade itself – producing a
soft, floating transition zone.
Anodised shades
The surface finishing by anodisation emphasises the highvalue character of the bar material. Apart from the standard
anodised shades, all further anodised colours are available on
request.
Designer Linear Grille
The Designer Linear Grille is characterised by a parallel arrangement of the
bars. This produces a clear optical border between floor area and facade.
Product Innovation
High safety
The rounded bar profiles of the grille allow safe step-on. The
rubber bearing makes the Designer Grille non-skid. The integrated cutting edge cover of the grille protects the user against
injuries during installation, cleaning, or maintenance work.
High strength
The Designer Grille is marked by high abrasion resistance. It
has been tested for chemical, thermal, mechanical and ultraviolet resistance, according to the most stringent criteria.
Stainless
Aluminium profile bars ensure a high stability, are resistant
against ultraviolet light and humidity, do not rust, nor warp,
nor change their colour.
For the individual expression, Designer Grilles are available in
different anodised shades, stainless steel finish, a RAL colour
selection and in high-quality decors.
Stainless steel finish
The Designer Grille in stainless steel finish sets aesthetic courses. The anodisation of the aluminium bar profiles allows to
produce a very realistic stainless steel finish.
RAL
All colours of the RAL system can be realised, allowing a full
implementation of individual design requirements.
Decors
A multitude of wood and stone surface decors are available for
an exclusive room design. All aluminium profiles are refined
with individual, natural decors in a high-quality and enduring
way.
Möhlenhoff is well renowned for the production of decors
which are an exact copy of the original floor covering. Transition areas from the floor covering to the cover grille can be
realised as if cut of the same cloth. Therefore, we use a customer-provided sample for the production of all decors! Exclusive
requirements to a harmonic overall solution in interior areas
can be fulfilled by means of a perfect imitation of the decors.
Soundlessness
The rubberized underside on the bottom insulates step-on
noises on the profile edge of the System Convector.
Flexibility
The Möhlenhoff Designer Grille is equipped with exchangeable bars. The Roll-Up Grille can be cut to length on site.
Easy cleaning
The Designer Grille is easy to maintain. The smooth surface
offers protection against dust and dirt.
You can find detailed information on surface design in our Designer Grille
brochure. You can find technical information in the Designer Grille Planning
Manual.

1. Notes on planning phase and installation preparation
Measuring on site in order to consider constructional tolerances.
Under consideration of the installation requirements and
standards on site (DIN 18380 and VDI 2035), a trench heater is installed in the screed area.
For a complete isolation of the cold air stream in front of
glazing facade, a screed convector must cover the entire
length of the glazing.
The trench heater must always be accessible for possible
maintenance work.
Pre-lay electric lines in empty pipes to the connection side.
Provide an empty tube if a remote control is used.
With respect to the distance from the System Convector to
the window, possibly existing curtains must be considered.
They must not hang over the trench heater.
Only after the termination of all constructive work may
the installation cover be removed permanently; until then,
the Designer Roll-Up Grille must be stored in a safe way.
8
2. Positioning and Alignment
The visible upper surface of the installation cover is the
finished dimension for the floor finish (floor coverings as
e. g. parquet, title marble, carpet).
The trench heater can be aligned according to the height of
the finished floor installed later. Interior (e. g. on the window
side) and exterior (e. g. on the room side) adjustment blocks
are available for this. The latter must be fixed to the raw
floor, if necessary, in order avoid a floating of the System
Convector.
For higher constructive heights, a loadable, impact sound
absorbing support must be provided below the trench
heater.
Radial Fan-Assisted System Convector GSK
3. Notes on hollow floors (raised floors)
A free-standing installation for full step-on ablility must
be possible in raised floors. See page 35.
The trench heater must be fixed in the raw floor using the
adjustment blocks in order to avoid sliding.
Interior adjustment blocks JBI
Exterior adjustment blocks JBA
4. Line installation of System Convectors
The trench heaters are connected with system connectors
(see page 35).
Conclusively proceed as described under "2. Positioning
and Alignment".
6. Screed
Use of noise insulation for borders: Screeds and floor coverings, parquet flooring in particular, may apply pressure to a
floor paving trench heater due to their thermal behaviour.
Take countermeasures, as e. g. expansion joints.
Hot Screed: Special measures must be taken with respect to
special screed types, e. g. hot screed (240°C), to ensure that
the System Convector is never exposed to a temperature of
more than 120 °C.
7. Resources
The water composition must be arranged according to DIN
18380 "Heating installations with central water heating installation“ and VDI 2035 "Prevention of damage in warm
water heating installations".
8. After the termination of the construction work
Please insert the Designer Grille only after the end of all
working measures.
Remove the installation cover
Roll out the roll grille beside the trench heater and cut the
corresponding length with a knife.
Linear grilles are custom-designed.
9. Maintenance
Notes on maintenance see page 36
5. Connection of the trench heater
In standard cases, the pipe are connected on the left side
with viewing direction towards the window (see point
mark on the installation cover)
The electric connection is performed according to the supplied installation instructions of the respective System Convector model.
On pages 26 ff you can find further notes on the electric
connection in stand-alone or parallel operation.

Standard Connection Overview
At the thermostat output, conventional switching thermostats (24 V), simple potentiometer actuators, but also continuous valve drives, can be connected to central DDC installations (0 -10V) in the scope of building services management
systems. An internal potentiometer allows the setting of the
maximum speed or of the speed target value without external regulator. The GS 1000 works with 24 V valve drives.

Parallel operation of several Fan-Assisted System Convectors
For a parallel operation of several GSK, all further GSK can be
completely wired. (Only applies if the local circumstances are
considered and if the regulations for electrical installations
are complied with.)
All devices are synchronised via a communication bus and
controlled by the master. By connecting an activation
component, (e. g. room thermostat) the master and
slave allocation under the connected GSK is performed
automatically after commissioning.

A maximum of 15 GSK can be grouped. The line length of
the control line, counted from the master unit, must not exceed 50 m. If the master is in the middle of a GSK group, this
applies per direction.
An arbitrary GSK can be chosen for the connection of the
control components (AR 5010 KD, DS 1000 etc.) to be connected to all control components. The selected GSK becomes
master unit after the electrical start-up.

Caused by the grid transformers of the GS 100, an inrush
current is generated with every start-up (according to
technical data), which could lead to an unintended tripping
of safety devices under certain circumstances. Thus, we
recommend to consider sufficient time-lag characteristics
when selecting the short-circuit protection devices, and to
provide an inrush current limitation on the customer's side
if necessary.

Note on the BUS communication of several trench heaters:
The BUS communication between the connection boards
of the GSK is established with
the use of telephone lines. The

a terminating resistor at the
beginning and at the end. This
resistance must be removed for
devices for complete wiring.

Mitre Joints
GP DR | GP DL
Mitre Joints for the Designer Roll-Up Grille and the Designer Linear Grille in matching colours. Delivery
as profiled plate, offering a beautiful solution with full step-on ability. The profile plate covers the
entire mitre section of two trench heaters or system troughs, respectively.
GPS for system trough
For Mitre Joints, angles and production lengths are manufactured according to your specifications in
mm. The System Convector will be delivered in partial sections ready to plug in, allowing simple and fast
installation. System trough cut to mitre.
GPL for system trough
Similar to GPW, but the air duct is cut at the appropriate angle. This facilitates the use of a series of radial
fan-assisted System Convectors around corners without additional fan units, up to a convector length of
5000 mm. The radial fan-assisted System Convector is supplied in sections which can be easily and quickly
assembled.

SV
The System Connectors are a simple and quick method of connecting System Convectors with trough lengths
(KL) exceeding 5.000 mm. By using a combination of standard and special lengths, it is possible to precisely adjust
the length of the system to the nearest millimetre, together with a continuous Designer Grille. The result is a
harmonious, integrated appearance.
Special Lengths
SL
The System Convector can be made to meet length specifications to the millimetre. A trench heater cut to fit
your exact specifications is delivered to ensure a perfect fit.
Note: In relation to the standard increment, only the system trough is manufactured to the millimetre. The
heat output corresponds to the next shortest standard length.

Recommendations
The following notes serve for a general preliminary information
during the planning phase. The GSK installation instructions
offers complete information as well as safety notes for the
specialist staff.
3. Cleaning the filter fleece
1. Dry cleaning:
As a standard, Möhlenhoff radial fan-assisted trench heater
are equipped with a filter fleece above the fans. Take out the
filter fleece and beat it for cleaning. If strongly contaminated,
the fleece can also be washed by hand with clear water; allow
it to dry afterwards. After that, re-insert the Designer Grille
and the filter fleece, if necessary.
Vacuum the Designer Grille at regular cleaning intervals during
normal cleaning.
3. Clean and Check the Blower / Fan
Cleaning the Designer Grille
2. Wet cleaning:
s¬$ESIGNER¬2OLL5P¬'RILLE
Open existing grille fixings, roll up the grille without bending it
excessively. The DR is dishwasher safe even up to a temperature
of 60°C with normal (non-industrial strength) dishwasher
detergent. After washing and drying, the grille can be replaced
on the convector trough and re-secured.
s¬$ESIGNER¬,INEAR¬'RILLE
Remove the linear grille from the trench heater and lay it
down to an appropriate place. For cleaning we recommend
commercial household cleaners and a soft washing brush (e. g.
car accessories). After washing and drying, the grille can be reinserted onto the trough.
Cleaning the System Convector
Remove the cover grille and the fleece filter. Make sure there
are no foreign objects in the blower/fan, remove any if necessary. Turn the fan by hand. If there is damage, inform a specialist. The blower/fan area can be vacuumed (a soft brush can be
helpful). Lay the filter fleece and cover grille back in place when
finished.
4. Examination and cleaning of the air guides
Remove the Designer Grille and the filter fleece, if necessary.
We recommend the use of a dry duster cloth of feather duster
for cleaning the air guide areas accessible with the hands. Areas with difficult access can be vacuum-cleaned (a soft brush
can support the cleaning process). Adhering contamination
can be removed with a damp cloth, if necessary. After that, reinsert the Designer Grille and the filter fleece, if necessary.
5. Cleaning the heat exchanger
Remove the Designer Grille. To clean the hand-accessible area of
the heat exchanger, we recommend a dry dust cloth or broom.
Hard to reach places can be cleaned with a vacuum cleaner
equipped with a soft brush nozzle or a soft brush. Replace the
filter, if needed, and re-secure the Designer Grille.
