Immersion Language Room, Cultural Discovery Rooms, Authentic Stage Performances, Competitions, Global Market Place, Arts and Crafts displays and activities. Who are the presenters? Teachers, professional performers and presenters, authentic native speakers, student organizations and clubs. GlobalFest Meets State of Illinois and Common Core educational standards for students. Teachers earn CPDUs for attendance and participation in the event each day. All awards are presented at Closing Ceremony. In addition, we are asking that each artist create a 3x5 card in which he/she writes a statement describing the artwork-how it was created and reasons why. To submit items for display complete Forms A and D. GlobalFest Banners These decorative banners should reflect the theme for this year’s GlobalFest. Please note: The GlobalFest Banner is not for the Opening Ceremonies Parade of Schools. The winning banners will be presented at the closing ceremonies. Limit 1 entry per school. Please bring all banners to the arts and crafts station in the library. Specifications: Dimensions: 2 ½ feet deep x 6 feet wide. Construct using a durable fabric (not paper, wood, or metal). If glue is used, it should be fabric glue. Decorate one side only. Feature the slogan “You are the Key to the World: GlobalFest 2014” and include the GlobalFest logo. (found on the front of this manual) Provide a top hem, through which a 12-foot length of clothesline is threaded. The clothesline should extend three feet on either side of the banner, to allow the banner to be displayed. Discovery Rooms Led by students, teachers, international experts and professional organizations, these interactive sessions include an enormous variety of fun and interesting cultural activities related to world languages and cultures. Participants learn about regional traditions, international issues and careers; make replicas of cultural artifacts, learn songs and dances, hear stories and play games in world languages. EACH SCHOOL participating in GlobalFest must present one session of one hour or two sessions of 23 minutes, with the exception of first-year schools. NO EXCEPTIONS. We need the cooperation and participation of all schools to continue to provide a wide variety of cultural activities for our students. Please note: Cooking demonstrations are not possible at Normal Community West High School due to health regulations. Exhibits Merchants, professional organizations, and school groups offer a wide variety of items to explore or purchase, such as crafts, keepsakes, and trinkets from world regions, T-shirts in world languages, interactive activities, and displays about world regions and issues. Participating school clubs are encouraged to develop and supervise displays about world issues or demonstrate cultural activities at exhibit tables. Global Connections Quiz Bowl In this single-elimination competition, teams consisting of threestudents work together to answer questions on history, current events, world personalities, geography, language & culture, and global issues. The competition is held Friday evening. Schools may enter more than one team; however, a different teacher must accompany each team. The rules for “The Global Connections” are not the same as IHSA Scholastic Bowl rules; your participation in this event will not affect your IHSA standing. Awards are presented at the Closing Ceremony. This competition requires a minimum of 2 hours participation. Participating schools must arrive by 5:45 p.m. to check in. No late arrivals will be accommodated. GlobalFest Krazy Olympiks Student teams participate in fun events like the Three-Legged Race. This event offers students a fun and interactive way to make new friends while meeting new cultures. This event will take place on Friday evening and again Saturday morning. Language Immersion Rooms Students are introduced to various Global Languages through the practices of total immersion, where students are taught in the target language using gesture, pictures and cognates. Classes are led by professional instructors or native speakers. Parade of Schools Schools are invited to join the GlobalFest Opening Ceremony by participating in the Parade of Schools. Students participating may carry their school banner, wear clothing representing world heritages, and carry national or regional flags. Participating schools must arrive and check in no later than 9:45 a.m. Performances Students present skits, songs, and dances to an audience of their peers. Students may perform as soloists or groups singing or playing an instrument, perform folk dances, perform skits, etc. Performances are from 5 to 30 minutes in length. Accompanying music must be provided on CD and turned in upon arrival at GlobalFest. Recognition awards are presented at the Closing Ceremony. Karaoke and Dance Students will be able to participate in Global language karaoke singing and dancing on Friday evening. Teachers must assist in chaperoning the dance. Closing Ceremony The final event of GlobalFest includes Presentation of Awards and an International Cultural Performance. Responsibilities of Teachers and Chaperones Responsibilities of the Teacher: 1. Obtain and complete all necessary forms and submit registration by the published deadline. 2. Obtain and submit all fees in the form of a School Check made out to: GLOBALFEST. 3. Obtain all official permissions. 4. Make students aware of their responsibilities before the trip. 5. Fulfill Leadership responsibilities in a professional manner, being a role-model to your students. 6. Assist in supervising students at the event. Report any concerns to the GlobalFest Headquarters. 7. Encourage participation and global awareness. 8. Supervise appropriate student behavior is demonstrated at the Friday evening dance. 9. Make travel and lodging arrangements as needed. Please note: GlobalFest does not assume responsibility or liability for the supervision or safety of students lodged in these facilities. 10. Volunteer for one hour of service. Sign-up at Check-in. 11. Present a one hour session or two 23 minute sessions at GlobalFest. This is required of all schools to ensure a program with rich cultural variety. ****We recommend offering extra credit for completed Passport. Passports are given to students at the start of the event. Students are encouraged to keep track of the sessions in which they participate in the passports. At the conclusion of each session, passports will be stamped by the lead presenter or a classroom assistant. This is a great way for students to stay on task while at GlobalFest. Responsibilities of the Chaperone/Assistant Teacher: 1. To serve as a role-model to students. 2. To assist Lead-Teacher in organization and supervision before, during and after GlobalFest. 3. Assist in supervising students at the event. Report any concerns to the GlobalFest Headquarters. 4. Volunteer for one hour of service if not leading an activity at GlobalFest. Sign-up at Check-in. Responsibilities of the Student: 1. Actively participate in as many different activities as possible. Do not simply roam the halls. 2. Arrive punctually for activities and performances, especially if they are organizers or performers. 3. Recognize that seating may sometimes be limited, and they may need to select an alternate session. 4. Be respectful of all participants and presenters, this is a cultural and global awareness event. 5. Appreciate the efforts of volunteers, presenters, performers, and staff participating in GlobalFest. 6. Follow the same standards of behavior, dress, language, and courtesy of a normal school day. 7. Stay inside the school and regularly report to the lead teacher. 8. Respect the school building, property and equipment. 9. Keep track of personal items. GlobalFest cannot assume responsibility for lost, damaged or stolen property. Registration Check-in Check-in will be located at the entrance on the North side of the school. You will be asked to submit the originals of the required: Form B Medical/Publicity Release Form. One for each participant, including chaperones and teachers. No one will be permitted to attend GlobalFest without submitting this completed form. Form C List of Participants Schools must have at least one adult supervisor for each fifteen students. Form D All Arts & Crafts Entries must be display ready with FORM D labels AND a 3x5 artist statement card. (See arts & crafts information) The lead teacher should enter the school, turn in the above forms, and obtain the registration packets (see below). The lead teacher should then return to the bus and distribute the materials to the students. We recommend that coats be left on the bus, as we do not have a coat check room. Students are to write their first and last names on the name tag upon arrival at the white tables. All lanyards are collected at the end of the event and reused. Students in grades nine through twelve are eligible to participate. Questions are posed in English. The rules for the Global Connections Quiz Bowl are not the same as IHSA Scholastic Bowl rules; your participation in this event will not affect your IHSA standing. Once you are registered, you will receive a copy of the rules and guidelines developed by the GlobalFest committee. Each school may register more than one three-student team; however, each team must be accompanied by a different teacher. Substitutions on the team are allowed only prior to the first competition, once competition has begun, no further substitutions will be allowed. We recommend selecting one or more additional students to train with the team as coaches and alternates in case you need a last minute substitute. If you register a team, please try to bring a team since cancellations leave other teams without a competitor. All schools must sign in no later than 5:45 p.m.; no exceptions. All registration must be done in advance. Global Connections Quiz Bowl is held on Friday evening of GlobalFest. Preliminary rounds begin at 6:00 PM. Final rounds finish by 8:30 PM. Awards are presented at the Closing Ceremonies on Saturday. A plaque with the name of the winning high team will also be engraved and placed on display at the school hosting GlobalFest. To register a team, each teacher must submit a copy of Form A, marking the appropriate boxes. Then submit it as directed at the bottom of the form, no later than December 20, 2013. Upon receipt of your registration, you will receive further specific instructions by e-mail from the chairperson of “The Global Connections.” Arts and Crafts Guidelines Arts and Crafts items will be on display in a supervised area during GlobalFest. All entries will be eligible to receive “People’s Choice” awards. Voting information will be provided in the exhibit area. -All arts and craft submissions should have been created in the current GlobalFest year. -All items require a label (see Form D, page 12). -All items require a 3x5 card on which the student writes an artist statement about the artwork.
