The city
– where everything is close by
Resecentrum/Uppsala Travel Centre
Welcome to Uppsala, the big city with a pulse that still has the charm and
character of a cosy small town. You can move around quickly and easily
between the beautiful area along the river Fyris and the shopping district with
new malls and shops that cater for all tastes and needs. If shopping does
not appeal, you can take advantage of the city’s rich cultural life, in the form
of museums, exhibitions and theatre or musical experiences. For those with
plenty of energy left at the end of the day, there are numerous restaurants and
night clubs to choose from. This brochure explains what Uppsala has to offer.
A bicycling city
Uppsala residents cycle both summer and winter. An extensive network of
cycle paths makes it easy to get around Uppsala, whether you want to take
a bicycle tour of the beautiful surroundings or just get around the city. In the
central areas of the city, there are more than 3,000 bike racks. If you would
like to rent a bike, contact the tourist office for information.
Resecentrum (Uppsala Travel Centre)
Uppsala is Sweden’s second largest rail destination, based on passenger
numbers. In recent years, the entire station area has been refurbished to
create a modern travel hub. There is now a new station building, new
platforms, new streets and passages that create new routes between the
eastern and western parts of the city. New parks and artworks have also
been created and installed in the area. The old station building has been
converted into an award-winning restaurant.
Urban planning
The city centre is growing in all directions. New shops and clothing brands
are establishing a presence in Uppsala. Public spaces, malls, shops and
marketplaces are being developed to meet the needs of visitors. Pedestrianised areas have been introduced and the entire stretch along the river Fyris
has been redeveloped to include piers and beach environments. The city is
becoming more attractive and more natural meeting places are being added.
Flagship street
An important route through the city centre is Vaksalagatan-Drottninggatan. The
‘Flagship street’ project involves improving the street environment, giving it a
uniform expression through lighting, signage and other improvements that will
make the street Uppsala’s flagship street.
Dragarbrunnsgatan (Dragarbrunn street)
Dragarbrunnsgatan is a wonderful street to stroll along. Two new squares invite you to sit down for a while and enjoy the view. Dragarbrunns torg (square)
near the Galleria Dragarbrunn (mall) has seating, magnolias and a fountain.
The other square, between Bangårdsgatan and Vretgränd, has taken as its
theme ‘living rooms‘ and small cherry trees share the area with homely lamps
and benches.

Uppsala city
Young meets old, modern meets traditional, calm meets excitement. Central
Uppsala has a variety of experiences to offer, with many new discoveries to
be made by the hour. A visit to Uppsala enables you to experience the past
while also seeing what the future has to offer, with older, more traditional
elements coming face to face with the ultra-modern. You will notice that when
you see the architecture, urban spaces, shops, museums and the people who
live here.
Cafés and restaurants
When you get hungry or crave a snack, there are lots of options. You don’t
need to stick to the many oases along the pedestrian street. In the adjacent
alleys and the area along the river Fyris, there are plenty of cosy and trendy
establishments as well.
Shopping
In Uppsala’s varied selection of shops, you’ll find most brands represented.
The latest addition is Rådhuset on Stora torget, carrying countless well-known
brands. The former court house has undergone a tasteful renovation, where
the old has been mixed with the new. The Galleria Dragarbrunn (mall)
presents classic brands in a modern, fresh environment. The St. Pergallerian
(mall) offers varied and welcome content for all. Forumgallerian (mall) has a
youthful and trendy approach, while Svava is a mall that focuses on food and
coffee breaks. The combinations of these different shops and businesses offers
a fantastic shopping experience and they are all just a short walk apart.

Ever since the 1700s, farmers have sold their produce in the Fyristorg square.

home-made bread, depending on the season.
Vaksalatorg
This square is the heart of the eastern part of Uppsala, next to Uppsala
Konsert & Kongress and the Kvarnen business building. During the season and
on Saturdays, the square teems with vegetable sellers and flea market tables.
Here you can find some real bargains, new and old. The square is also used
extensively for various events. Head for Vaksalatorg via Vaksalagatan, with its
selection of shops and eateries.

No matter what the time of year you visit Uppsala, there is always something
to experience. The choice is yours, the range is huge. There is something
for everyone: shoppers, art lovers, families, conference attendees or sports
fans. Events to enjoy include the Allt ljus på Uppsala light festival in Uppsala
in darkest November, the Easter parade, fashion weekend, activities around
Christmas, Swedish National Day celebrations, and an ice festival. Contact
the tourist office to see what will be happening while you’re here, so you don’t
miss anything. Visit www.destinationuppsala.se
Uppsala gardens
It was in Uppsala that Swedish botanist Linnaeus created order in nature, right
down to the smallest stamens and pistil. The former home of the ‘flower king’
at Linnéträdgården is now a museum and a cultural gem. The Botanical garden below the castle has been named one of Sweden’s most beautiful parks
and the jury called it a gem in the city of Uppsala. The beautiful Stadsträdgården (Municipal garden) is the ‘green lung’ of the city. Along the river Fyris,
south of the city centre, you can stroll among the greenery or along the banks
of the river, visit the playground or the café, which is open in the summer. In
the English Park, behind the university library, there is a playground for younger visitors and it was here that Owe Törnqvist, a famous Swedish songwriter,
sang that he danced the rumba.
Museums
Experience Uppsala’s many museums. The dungeons at Uppsala Castle give
you a strangely exciting and educational experience taking you back in time
through Sweden’s history. Biotopia shows animals in their natural environment
and has lots of activities for children and young people. Gustavianum is Uppsala University’s oldest preserved building. Besides the anatomical theatre and
the Augsburg Art Cabinet, there is an exhibition depicting the history of the
University from 1477 until today. The Uppland Museum is a cultural meeting
place for those who want to know more about Uppland and Uppsala. Pelle
Svanslös hus tells the story of Sweden’s kindest and wisest cat, Peter-No-Tail,
and if you are interested in dinosaurs, visit the Museum of Evolution. Uppsala
University Library’s Carolina Rediviva houses a real treasure – the Silver Bible.
Cinema
There are a number of cinemas in the city centre. Filmstaden, Spegeln and
Royal show current cinema releases. Slottsbiografen was the place where
Ingmar Bergman had his first cinema experiences, and Fyrisbiografen is also
a small pearl with a less mainstream programme than the chain cinemas. Uppsala is also known for its short film festival, which takes place every autumn.

Student city
Uppsala is also a student city. It has two universities, Uppsala University and
the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, which, with its world-leading
research and education, supplies Uppsala with a skilled workforce and new
businesses rooted in research. The beautiful student association buildings, or
‘nationshus’, provide venues for students to enjoy evening entertainment, but
also house libraries, cafés and association premises.
Uppsala University
Today, around 40,000 students study at Uppsala University, which was founded in 1477. Some of its famous alumni include Carl Linnaeus, Dag Hammarskjöld, Betty Pettersson, Peter Englund, Carina Lidbom and Niklas Zennström.
The most popular courses include law, medicine, psychology and nursing. The
University is ranked among the top 100 in the world. Do not miss a visit to the
university auditorium, the beautiful building near the university park.
The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU)
SLU has more than 4,000 students. The University’s history dates back to the
1700s, but what is called SLU today was founded in 1977. Courses tend to
focus on veterinary science, agronomy and landscape architecture. In 2011,
the University was ranked one of Sweden’s top three and the campus is located just south of the centre of Ultuna.
May Day celebrations
30th April is the students’ day, but everyone in Uppsala joins in. The day
includes rafting on the river Fyris, a herring lunch, the champagne gallop in
one of the student associations’ gardens, a picnic in one of the many parks,
the student cap ceremony at Carolinabacken and the evening celebrations
with choral singing at the castle’s Gunillaklocka (bell) or a bonfire. If you want
to end the evening in style, you can go to a ball at the castle.

to music, theatre, poetry and short film festivals, among other events. Early in
the autumn, Kulturnatten (Culture Night) attracts more than 100,000 visitors
each year. Every year, a large number of sporting events are also arranged in
various fields of sport.
Katalin
Katalin is one of Uppsala’s most established venues for live music. In 1986,
Katalin Varga opened its first club and restaurant, where many world famous
artists have performed over the years.
Uppsala Konsert & Kongress
The world famous Danish architect Johnny Svendborg designed the Uppsala
Konsert & Kongress centre, which opened in 2007. Anything can happen
here: from small everyday meetings or lunches to festivals lasting several days.
It also offers one of the city’s best vantage points and a long red escalator
takes you up to the correct floor. For the current programme of events, see
www.ukk.se
Uppsala stadsteater
Uppsala stadsteater – the city theatre – celebrated its 60th anniversary in
2011. They have an exciting repertoire and plays several nights a week, with
everything from innovative works to foreign classics and lunch and dance
performances. For the current repertoire, visit www.uppsalastadsteater.se
Regina Theatre
