2014 VBHA Season – JUNIOR
Hello all and welcome to the 2014 Ball Hockey season. I would like to take this time to thank you for
volunteering your time to coach in the junior division. I recognize most, if not all of you in this division,
have been involved over the years as a coach, board member or parent of a player and have a good
understanding of what to expect.
Please be reminded you are dealing with older teenagers, some who have been playing for several years
now and others who have signed up for the first time. You will see very few females in this division but
rest assured, if the girls are choosing to play, they know what they are up against. Attitude, cockiness,
competitiveness and aggression are very apparent on and off the floor in this division.
As a coach, the message you send to your players must be clear and concise. Ball hockey is a noncontact recreational sport that has many reasons to work hard and be competitive, but the league
encourages fair play and fun and wants all players to enjoy playing. Win or lose, sportsmanship, respect
and integrity must shine through.
Fair play is at the forefront of every division. Coaches must be aware this is not a rep program,
therefore power play lines and double shifting should not come at the cost of a child’s right to be on the
floor. Do not send a message of this type to any child as it does not match our leagues mandate.
Please read through this package from beginning to end and become familiar with its’ content.
All coaches require a clear criminal record check and Respect in Sport Certification. This is
mandatory and non-negotiable. Failure to comply will result in the lost opportunity to draft
your team and removal from the bench until it is complete. A 2 minute bench minor penalty
will be assessed at the start of every game if any coach is noted on the bench during any regular
season or playoff game who has not provided proof of both requirements. Only the Head Coach
and one (1) Assistant Coach can attend draft night. Each team can protect two (2) players only,
their own child and the child of their assistant. Where a Head Coach has 2 children, only those
2 players can be protected and the Head Coach will need to select his assistant after the draft is
complete. VBHA will insure up to 5 coaches per team, but only a maximum of 3 coaches are
permitted on the bench at one time. All Coaches must be in good standing with all
requirements completed (Criminal Record check and Respect in Sport). Parents, siblings and
other spectators are not allowed on the playing surface during games or practices. This is nonnegotiable.
Player disciplinary action has been implemented to act as protection for our coaches. The head
coach of each team will need to be in attendance when any member of their team requires a
meeting with the leagues disciplinary committee. This will give the committee a chance to hear
the coach’s side and give the coach a chance to call a player out for their inappropriate actions.
This information can be used in decision making for disciplinary action. It also provides an
opportunity for the coach to make sure their player is being treated in a fair manner.
I am excited about the upcoming season. Please feel free to contact me throughout the season with any
questions or concerns you may have.
It is important at this age to take your practices seriously and make every effort to plan ahead
and be organized. Keep an open line of communication with your parents and make yourself
approachable.
Please understand you have volunteered to ensure that all players, regardless of their skill level
enjoy their time playing ball hockey. It is a privilege to coach whether it is your first time or you
are well seasoned. Take the opportunity to make a lasting impression on these kids. We are in
control of the memories, let’s be sure they are positive
Thanks

A Look At The Season
As a Coach, your first task of the year will be to draft your team. The head coach may have only
one (1) assistant coach that accompanies them to draft night. Each team can protect two (2)
players only, their own child and the child of their assistant. Where a Head Coach has 2
children, only those 2 players can be protected and the Head Coach will need to select his
assistant after the draft is complete. The head coach and assistant’s child will be selected when
they appear in the window based on the previous year’s player evaluation results. SEE DRAFT
PROTOCOL for more information.
When the draft is completed and the rosters are finalized it is the responsibility of the head
coach to look over all registration forms. Pay close attention to medical conditions and be sure
to speak with the parent regarding any concerns you may have. Don’t be afraid to ask
questions.
The league requests you complete contact with parents/players within 4 days of the draft to
introduce yourself and let them know you are their coach. When speaking with them, confirm
the information on their registration sheet is correct. ie. email address, contact numbers, etc.
There is a no trade policy in effect. Any parent’s requests during initial contact with their coach
can be forwarded to the registrar but the league position is that no trades are made.
VBHA Draft Policy
***NOTE: In order to be eligible to draft a team all Coaches must have completed their Criminal
Record Check or provide proof of receipt by February 28th of the current season
1. The order of the draft shall be determined by random selection of cards. Each head
coach shall ask to draw a card from a deck of cards
2. The team that draws “ACE” gets the first pick
3. If there is no head coach at the draft, then the designate will draw the card
4. Selections are made by groups. The number of teams in the division determines the size
of the group; for instance…….. If there are 5 pup teams, the first selection will open to
the first 5 players on the draft list. As a player is selected, the group is adjusted to
always include 5 players
5. “FULL” time goalies starting at Peewee division and up, will be presented to you on a
separate draft form. They will be available for selection after the first round of picks and
will be open for the remainder of the draft for that age group. Coaches may select (1)
one full time goalie from the list and will not be permitted to select from the list again
until ALL teams have drafted one goalie. (the association cannot control the number of
goalies registered to play full time and are aware that some divisions may be short
goalies while others will have more than the number of teams) This will place teams in
a position where they may have more than one goalie
6. Starting with the oldest players, all “evaluated” players in the same birth year are
drafted first. “NEW” players and “non-evaluated” players returning after 2 years will
not be included on the draft list and will be randomly drawn by each coach in the order
of the draft
7. All players in the draft are grouped together in “birth year” and are ranked according to
evaluation score
8. All “evaluated” players from the first birth year are selected, before selecting the “new”
or “non-evaluated” players from the same birth year.
9. All “new” or “ non-evaluated” players from the same birth year are then selected before
moving to the next birth year
10. Protected players (children of coaches and/or assistant coaches shall be selected in the
order that they appear in the draft) Head Coach is allowed to protect 2 players only (ie.
His own 2 children or one of his own and one other child which may be his/her Assistant
Coach)
11. Head of Coaches will provide Registrar with a list of the Head Coaches in each division
and a possible Assistant to be noted on draft sheets
12. Siblings are indicated on draft sheets where requests have been made to place them on
the same team. Special requests approved by Executive are also noted
13. Once draft is complete, the coaches will receive the registration forms of the children
they have selected
14. Coaches should review the player registration forms THE LEAGUE POSITION IS THAT NO
TRADES ARE TO BE MADE!
15. If it is the opinion of a Coach that a legitimate trade request is required he must go
through the following procedures;
a. Approach registrar or designate to request of trade
b. The request will be reviewed by the registrar and other executive members in
order to obtain permission to grant this request
c. Agree with the coach that the trade request is legitimate and the trade is for fair
value
IMPORTANT - PLEASE READ
 When Team Rosters are finalized, the head coach or designate will complete a “team
list” and forward to the head of coaches at [email protected] no later than April
15th. Failure to comply will result in the loss of scheduled practice time until the
information has been received by the Head of Coaches
 The team head coach, or designate, will call all the parents/players on his team within 4
DAYS of the draft to inform them of their child’s selection to the team
 If at this point, a parent has requests for their child to be moved to a different team, the
parent must request this move with the registrar. No player trades are to be made by
any coach after the parents are called. If the request by the parent is deemed to be
legitimate by the Board of Directors, then the coaches involved will be contacted to
complete the trade.
The following information will help you be prepared when the parents have questions for you
during your initial conversation.
Most Common Questions
1. Who else is on our team? (Have your players list with you!)
2. What equipment is needed? (See the list below and let them know it’s on our website!)
 CSA Approved Helmet
 Good running shoes that have short laces to avoid constant tying up and/or tripping
hazard
 Jock and/or Jill
 Soft elbow pads
 Soft knee pads
 Shin guards
 Hockey gloves
 Hockey stick (no plastic sticks to be used)
3. When is our first practice? (You most likely will not know when you will be practicing
yet. Let them know you will practice once a week but the day, time and location is still
to be determined.)
4. What days will our games be? (Most likely the schedule is not available yet. Let them
know the seasons start date and that the schedule will be posted on the VBHA website
as soon as it becomes available.)
5. Do you need any volunteers? (A Team Manager is a necessity as this frees the Coach up
to do what he is intended to do, Coach!! Depending on how many coaches you have this
is a great time to welcome any help. Let them know right away that they need to have a
criminal record check done and complete Respect In Sport. Forms can be found on the
website and RIS can be accessed through the Coaches/Managers link on the website.
Managers are required to complete a criminal record check and it is recommended they
take Respect in Sport. It will be mandated in the coming years.)
6. What’s our team name? (The most common way to select a name is to let the kids
vote! Tell the players if they have any ideas to bring them to your first practice!)
7. Have you coached before? (Let them know about yourself and who your child is!)
8. Are we having a parent meeting? Yes, and let them know when! (After the first
practice works well)
You will be advised when Equipment and Jersey’s will be available for pick up. Ideally this
should happen before you first practice. VBHA's Equipment Manager will ensure you receive all
the gear and additional materials required. Once you are in possession of the equipment, it is
your sole responsibility and you are expected to return it in its’ entirety, exactly as you received
it. Please advise your players that jersey’s must be returned and in good condition with name
bars and letters removed. Please advise your players that NO IRON on name bars or letters are
permitted or they have purchased their jersey! Any jersey un-returned will result in their jersey
deposit not being refunded.
First Team Get Together
It's important to arrive early. Parents are anxious to meet you and put a face to a name.
Introduce yourself and make yourself accessible as parents and players are arriving. Have your
practice skills planned and organized beforehand. Explain to your players right from the start of
the first practice what your expectations are ie. Full equipment, no shooting the ball during
instruction, stop when you here the whistle etc….. This is instrumental in having successful
practices throughout the year and also sets you up for success! Distribute team jerseys as soon
as possible, in the fairest manner possible. You will need to come up with a team name,
encourage the player’s to offer their ideas and suggestions and decide as a group.
Parent Meeting
The sooner this meeting takes place the better, at the end of the first practice is ideal.
Introduce your Assistant Coaches and Team Manager if you have those in place already. If you
don't, this meeting is the time to reach out for help. Be sure to explain the league rules to the
parents and your expectations as a coach (ie. contact you or the manager if they will miss a
session, remind them they are not permitted on the playing surface and any rules you may have
about parents in the change rooms). Set time frames for arrival to practices and games and
lead by example! Encourage open communication with the coaching staff and team manager!
Prior To Your First Game
Have a team name picked and send it into [email protected]. Be sure all the players have all the
necessary equipment and that it fits properly. If you are rotating goalies have a fair plan as to
the way you will rotate the goalies and let them know. Refer to helpful hints to make sure you
have everything in your bag. Ensure your team manager has sent the schedule for games and
practices to you parents/players. Keep your team info in your bag and on the bench to access
emergency contacts and care card numbers if necessary. Always keep a spare game sheet in
your bag just in case and be aware that the Home team is responsible for bringing the game
sheet and running the score clock. Make sure to list all your players on the game sheet if you
are expecting them or not. Take a few minutes before the game to go over your line
combinations. Remember equal playing time is non- negotiable. Let the season begin.
After The Game
Teams are expected to line up and shake each other’s hand as well as the referees, regardless
of the game result. This teaches good sportsmanship right from the start! If it is observed that
any player or coach chooses to not participate in the handshake, the head of coaches will be
contacted and disciplinary action may be taken. It is a good idea for coaches to have a
reflection period after each game with other members of your coaching staff. Please clean up
after yourselves. The dressing room should be treated with respect and be ready for the next
teams use. The coach or team official should be the last one to leave the dressing room/arena
and be sure all players are accounted for.
Season’s End
Ball hockey is a short season!! I hope this package will guide you to a successful one! At the
end of the season, you will be asked to evaluate the players in 5 categories each out of a score
of 5 (see attached evaluation form example). This ensures they are placed properly in the draft
for the following season. Forms will be forwarded to you via e-mail and you will be expected to
attend an evaluation meeting that will be scheduled near the end of the season.
All teams are expected to attend the season wind up whether they are playing in the final game
or not. Players will be presented with Medals and in some divisions, awards. Jersey’s and
equipment must be returned no later than June 20th. Separate dates will be scheduled by the
Equipment Manager the week following wind-up. Please ensure you have collected all jersey’s
from your players and hand them in as a set.
It’s always a great idea to plan a year-end windup to celebrate the success of your team. As a
Coach, you need to feel great about developing players, teaching them team work and
sportsmanship. These are only a few accomplishments that will take place throughout the year
and they should be celebrated!!!
Now the last thing to do is to look for next year’s registration dates and do it all again. Wishing
everyone a great successful season!!!!!!!

Coaching Philosophy
A concise statement can be found in the 3M National Coaching Certification Program. Coaching is
about helping other people improve and achieve their goals in and through sport. It also means
creating an environment in which this can take place.
Provide every participant in a sport program with a positive experience
Every individual who chooses to participate in a sport program must have the opportunity to have a
positive experience. The benefits and satisfaction must be such that they will be motivated to
continue participating.
Provide an opportunity for participants to achieve their full potential in sport
Each individual has unique interests, abilities, and talents that characterize him/her. Each
participant must be provided an equal opportunity to explore his/her interests and to develop
his/her skills and abilities. Sport programs must challenge each participant relative to his/her goals
and capabilities.
Use sport as a personal development tool
Sport enables a participant to challenge him/herself, the environment, and others. It also gives the
participant an opportunity to interact with others. In itself, sport is neither good nor bad, however,
it can be a vehicle for good.
Coaches are encouraged to expand their skills not only through the philosophies of this document,
but also through the attainment of coaching certificates offered by various organizations such as:
 Canadian Hockey Association (CHA)
 National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP)
Characteristics of Coaching
As a general rule, all coaches do the following:
1. Instill the love of sport in a fun and safe environment.
2. Promote participation and encourage participants regardless of their ability level.
3. Provide support to athletes in areas such as training, physical, tactical and mental
preparation. Work towards improving the athletes competitive abilities.
4. Work to develop athletes in the long term.
5. Use sport as a means of developing the individual in a holistic fashion.
6. Teach values through sport.
7. Help athletes become as good as they can be.
8. Create conditions whereby sport is a positive experience and the athlete's self esteem
is enhanced.

A Few Helpful Hints
 Bring a lock to your games. Be sure to lock your dressing room door during
practices and game time
 Mesh bag for player’s valuables. Be sure to keep this bag of valuables
(keys, wallets, cell phones) on the bench with you during game time.
 Multipurpose screwdriver in your equipment bag (great for repairing
helmets)
 Hockey Tape
 First Aid Kit (provided by league)
 Ice Packs
 Assign parents to volunteer as scorekeepers at home games as soon as you
have your team schedule. It’s easier to assign them, tell them that’s their
responsibility and if it doesn’t work for them THEY need to make
arrangements to change with another set of parents on the team
