– Northwest Region 2014 HOW TO USE THIS MANUAL 1. At first, the sheer size of the LTC program can make the most enthusiastic and zealous person feel a little overwhelmed. “What did I get myself into?” is a question many first-time LTC Directors ask themselves the moment they begin thumbing through the manual. 2. So where do you start? That’s easy – start right here. Now, think about this one word: 3. DELEGATE 4. No one expects you to do this all by yourself. And besides, delegating is Scriptural. Our Master, Jesus Christ delegated the task of preaching the gospel to the whole world to a few fishermen, a tax collector, and a tent maker! And what did they do? That’s right, they delegated their task to others, who passed it along, and so on, and so on. This is actually one of the great side benefits of LTC. It gets a whole bunch of parents and other adults involved in the Lord’s work. So determine who you are going to get to help you. You probably have already heard a few brothers and sisters say, “if you need anything, just ask.” Well, START ASKING! 5. Next – take a look at the Table of Contents. This manual is basically divided into three sections. The first section is a MUST read. It tells you about the LTC organization and offers other tidbits of need-to-know / nice-to-know information. Things like when the kids have to be registered and how to register are contained in the first section. 6. The second section contains the Pre-Convention events. This section, and the next, is the section you need to delegate. The people you delegate NEED TO READ AND UNDERSTAND the rules for the different events. It is VERY IMPORTANT the pre-convention event entries are submitted by the due date. 7. The third section contains the Convention events. The people you delegate NEED TO READ AND UNDERSTAND the rules for the different events. 8. While you are delegating, be thinking about who from your congregation can be judges at the convention. (You can even delegate someone to be the Judges Director for your congregation!) The LTC convention requires a LOT of judges – typically three judges for each event during each time period. 9. Each team event requires one judge for each team entered from your congregation, if possible. Individual events request one judge from your congregation for every four students entered. So if you have 23 students entered in at least one individual event, you will need 6 judges. (Always try to round up.) If some of those 23 kids participate in 4 team events, you will need four more judges for a total of 10 judges from your congregation. 10. Judges have to be adults. Parents seem to be the most likely candidates, however, try recruiting judges from the folks in your congregation who don’t have children participating in LTC: grandparents, parents of children too young to participate in LTC, and other brethren are good sources for judges and Event Directors. As the Northwest Region grows, we hope to have some Event Directors from several congregations. 11. The more help you have, the easier your job will be. Page 5 of 136 Leadership Training for Christ – Northwest Region 2014 STATEMENT OF PURPOSE Leadership Training for Christ – Northwest Region is an organization designed to stimulate and encourage Spiritual, mental, and social growth among young men and women in the third through twelfth grades. Its mission is to achieve this growth by developing skills in leadership, Bible knowledge, and Christian Servanthood. Skill development in each of these areas is accomplished throughout the weeks of preparation for, and then the participation in a variety of individual and group events that are presented at a convention held the third weekend in April each year. These events take place within the context of a wholesome and supportive environment designed for the purpose of fostering enthusiasm and high achievement among the participants. The events are divided into grade and Gender categories as is appropriate and will involve Christian young people from Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and hopefully other northwestern states. The organization encourages the involvement and support of parents, local church leaders, and other interested adults in the preparation leading to and during the annual convention. Although the convention primarily consists of achievement events, the weekend culminates in a Saturday Night Celebration to showcase as many events as possible, and then a Sunday morning worship service to reinforce the spiritual aims of the program. May God be glorified as young people learn to walk in His light through the efforts of Leadership Training for Christ. Page 6 of 136 Leadership Training for Christ – Northwest Region 2014 A BRIEF HISTORY OF LEADERSHIP TRAINING FOR CHRIST In the late 1960's, Jack Zorn began working with the young boys in his Montgomery, Alabama congregation. His goal was to develop their leadership skills. Under the name "Lads to Leaders", the program spread to nearby churches of Christ. Annual Easter weekend conventions usually held in Nashville, Tennessee, attracted participants from many states. Eventually, registration at the convention grew to about 3,500. Recognizing that more groups would participate if the convention were closer to home, an effort was made to establish a Southwest Region of Lads to Leaders/Leaderettes. A regional convention was held in Houston, Texas, during the Easter weekend of 1988 and over 700 attended. Following the 1988 convention, it became obvious to the group from the Southwest that the geographical complications of coordinating two conventions through two boards of widely dispersed members were hindering the basic goal of both groups. The decision to form Leadership Training for Christ was finalized in October 1988. Since its origin, LTC has focused on making the annual convention an opportunity to challenge young people to develop in an increasing number of leadership areas. New events have been added to the basic convention recipe. Others, like Bible Bowl, have been dramatically revised. The 1990-1992 conventions were also held in Dallas. In 1993 and 1994 the convention was held in Fort Worth where it had grown to 3,700 participants before it returned to Dallas in 1995. 1993 was also significant since this was the year LTC Western Region was established covering far West Texas, New Mexico, Idaho, Colorado, Arizona, Utah, Nevada, and California. In 1996 a new Midwest Region was established in Kokomo, Indiana. The Dallas Region (North Texas LTC) was further divided into new regions with additional conventions held in Houston, Texas (Central Texas LTC), and Tulsa, Oklahoma (Great Plains LTC). In 1999, the North Texas Convention divided into two separate events with both now being held in the Dallas area. The Western Region divided into two sites identified as the Southwestern Region (Phoenix, AZ) and new Western Region location in Santa Jose, California was started in 1995. In 2006 a small start was made in the northwest by the combined efforts of the churches in Prineville, Oregon and Richland, Washington who operated as a satellite location of the Southwestern Region. In 2007 an official LTC Northwest Region Convention was started in Prineville, Oregon with churches from Oregon, Washington and Idaho and the first Northwest Region board of directors was formed. In 2009 the Northwest Region Convention was relocated to the more centralized Tri-Cities (Richland, Kennewick, and Pasco) area of Washington. The learning process which takes place in the home congregation is the real value of LTC, with the Convention as a time and place where young people can meet together, demonstrate their accomplishments, and broaden their definitions of excellence. The events are the whetstone necessary to sharpen the tool, the opportunity to practice leadership skills, and a challenge to raise our collective standards. Developing Skills in Leadership, Bible Knowledge, and Christian Servanthood Page 7 of 136 Leadership Training for Christ – Northwest Region 2014 THIS YEAR’S LEADERSHIP TRAINING FOR CHRIST THEME The Life of Moses Exodus 1-20; Numbers 10-14, 20-24; Deuteronomy 31-34 Moses wasn’t supposed to have been born. The Pharaoh had a plan to reduce the slave population and remove the threat from his people. But God also had a plan. A faithful Hebrew woman refused to compromise her commitment to life. Through her godly actions, God placed His man in the house of Pharaoh, and the rest, as they say, is history. The baby called Moses grew to be a leader of men and nations. As he grew, he began to struggle with his identity and he felt the call to do something for the people who shared his blood. He would do something; but it was not time. He fled Egypt and for forty years God taught this leader of men to be a leader for His people. Then at the right time, God sent him back to Egypt, to stand up to Pharaoh and allow the people of Israel to go free. God “Called Out” Moses from the life he knew, taught him what he needed to know, and sent Moses back to do the task God had planned for him. The story of Moses is the story of a nation, the story of God’s people and a part of our story as well. He was a man of faith who faced challenges and joys. In the end, he remained faithful to God and he serves as an important example to us today. For the next six months, we hope that your study of the life of Moses helps you to see that your life has purpose and meaning and that you are a part of a generation that God has “Called Out”, to live for Him. He wants to prepare you for one of the greatest tasks given to people; to be a servant in the Kingdom of God. To be Light and Salt to a world that is struggling in bondage and darkness. We hope you will overcome the doubt and struggles, just like Moses did, and that you will be faithful as you live your life for God’s Son. So let’s get started, digging into the life of Moses and seeing all the ways that God prepared him and led him in the task given. For you to learn the lessons and do your best with PreConvention and Convention Events, you must be diligent with your study, thoughtful about what you learn and creative in the application. We all look forward to a great year in LTC NW! May God be praised greatly for the work you do individually and may He be honored with what we do together. May the people that God has “Called Out” faithfully go where He leads! The investment you are making for the development of young people will reap many dividends today and in the future of the church. CODE OF ETHICS 1. First and foremost, Church Coordinators must remember that LTC IS FOR THE GROWTH AND DEVELOPMENT OF SPIRITUAL LEADERSHIP AMONG OUR YOUTH. In order for the learning to be of maximum benefit, the LTC preparation must be the student's own work. Church Coordinators can rob students of crucial learning when work is done for them. For maximum long-term benefits, guidance, resources, and encouragement must be provided so students can develop their own ideas. With this type of support, they may confidently claim ownership of their work. 2. Church Coordinators must place their emphasis on participation and effort rather than on competition and winning. The least value comes from winning while the maximum value comes from hard work and best efforts. As Christians, it is foolish to measure success as the world does when God measures success very differently. Competition is only a motivating mechanism to promote skill development. 3. Church Coordinators must find important and needed areas for our youth leaders to be integrated into the overall leadership of the church. Our youth need responsibilities now that give them important roles and contribute to the church. 4. Church Coordinators need to communicate these ideas to all parents and church leaders. The Winning Entrant will receive a $35 cash award, three free T-Shirts, and their design adorning every LTC NW T-Shirt for this year. 3. On the back of the submittal, in pencil, include the registered LTC participant’s name and address. 4. The submitted design must be in accordance with this year’s LTC theme. 5. Designs need to be done in black ink on white paper. Color versions can accompany the ink design to suggest color schemes, but the winning entry will be subject to editing to best fit on the LTC T-shirts. 6. Keep in mind that the winning design is going to be printed as a single solid print color on a short sleeve T-shirt of a different single solid color. 7. The submittal design must be: a. an original composition of the team member(s) b. rendered in black ink on white paper c. the dimensions of the image (NOT the paper size) must be no larger than 11” x 17” and no smaller than 8.5” x 11” with at least a 1” border all around d. must be camera-ready* e. must be actual size for printing 8. Keep your design simple and stay away from small details that would get “lost” in the final printed T-shirt design. 9. This is important! At various stages while developing your design, take an honest, critical look at your artwork and imagine how your friends (at school and church) would respond if you were to ask them to wear a T-shirt with your design. If you sincerely think they would, then you probably have the right design. 10. All entries must not be folded and must be mailed flat. 11. Entries must be postmarked by March 1st. 12. Send entries to the pre-convention events T-Shirt design director. 13. The Board of Directors' decisions concerning all matters related to this contest are final. 14. Camera-ready – Artwork is in black ink on white paper. The artwork is clean, crisp, with no touch-ups or changes required. 15. T-Shirt Design is now a separate pre-convention event, and will be judged and awarded as such. Free hosting of your website can be an inexpensive way to get your pages on the Internet. The downside is that many of these require the presence of banners and other advertisements that detract from the intended message of a Christian website. 2. There are lots of websites that offer free graphics or graphics that are free to non-profit organizations. 3. A “website” as the term is used in this event description does not mean that it must be an independent web address. A “website” can also be a collection of pages appearing “beneath” or branching off of a church website. Judges should be adults who are willing to devote a portion of the convention time to serve the participants. PROCESS: Each participating congregation will attempt to: 1. Supply a minimum of one adult judge for each event with registered participants at the convention. 2. Either complete the Judges Enrollment Form provided in this manual or e-mail the Judging Director address given above. Note: Judges must be enrolled no later than April 1st. The Judging Director will: Assign 3 Judges and 1 alternate Judge for each event. Communicate in advance what events the Judges will judge. Designate the meeting place for Judges Meetings (if needed). Assign a time keeper in events requiring one Provide official Judging Forms to Event Directors Page 85 of 136 Leadership Training for Christ – Northwest Region 2014 BIBLE BOWL PURPOSE: To challenge participants to achieve an in-depth knowledge of God's Word! Scriptures Covered: Exodus 1-20; Numbers 10-14, 20-24; Deuteronomy 31-34 PROCESS: 1. All participants and coaches must read and understand rules for the current year. 2. Enroll four (4)-member team(s), using Official Team Form(s) only, in Grade Category of highest grade player on each team. See "TEAMS" for further information on incomplete teams. 3. Enroll one adult “COACH” for each team registered. See "OFFICIALS" (scorekeepers) for further information on any scorekeeping change. 4. Mailed completed official "Team Form(s)" must be postmarked on or before the registration deadline. 5. Registration Changes/Corrections must be postmarked or made by email by April 1st. STUDY MATERIALS: 1. Study questions will be developed throughout the year. As those are completed they will be posted on the website or contact Mike Reeves. 2. ALL ACTUAL QUESTIONS WILL BE DEVELOPED, BY THE EVENT DIRECTORS, FROM Revelation (1984 NEW INTERNATIONAL VERSION) OF THE BIBLE. TEAMS: 1. Teams are composed of four (4) young men and/or women in grades 3-12. You may enter as many complete teams as desired. LTC will help in filling incomplete teams ("pickup teams") for those congregations who have an uneven number of players to make up complete teams, but it is ultimately the Church Coordinator(s)' responsibility to see that their players have a complete team. 2. The Grade Categories are: Grades 3-6, and Grades 7-12. 3. A player may be a member of only one team during the event. A player may participate in a Grade Category above his/her own, but may not participate in a lower Grade Category. 4. Players competing on incomplete teams will compete for individual awards only. Any team which loses one or more players after the event begins will no longer be eligible to compete for a team award, but each remaining player on such incomplete team may continue to compete for an individual award. 5. No "phantoms" will be used to score incomplete teams so as to allow an incomplete team to compete for a team award. See also "SCORING/POINTS." 6. No alternates are permitted. 7. All team changes must be reported to the Event Director at least one hour before the Bible Bowl Event begins. The Event Director will be available in the area where the Bible Bowl Event will be held in order to facilitate any last minute changes (see also, “COACHES MEETING”). Page 86 of 136 Leadership Training for Christ – Northwest Region 2014 ROUNDS: 1. Bible Bowl, for all Grade Categories, will consist of four (4) rounds, all of which will be conducted Friday evening between 7:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. in two (2) separate rooms. Grade Category 3-6 will be conducted in one of the rooms and Grade Categories 7-12 will be conducted simultaneously in the other room. Due to time constraints, it will be very important for all players, other participants and spectators, to be cognizant of these times and be promptly in their appropriate places for the beginning of each round. 2. Each of the four (4) rounds will be approximately thirty-five (35) minutes in length, with approximately a ten (10)-minute break between the second and third round. 3. Each of the four (4) rounds will consist of fifteen(15) questions for 3 rd-6th grades; twenty (20) questions for 7th – 12th grades… with three (3) possible multiple choice answers (i.e., A, B or C) per question. See also "QUESTIONS" and "ANSWER SYSTEM." QUESTIONS: 4. Questions will be developed by the QUIZMASTER from the book of Revelation (1984 New International Version). All questions will cover only textual facts. There will be no questions on interpretation. Players should be prepared to answer questions in each round from any chapter. 5. All questions, followed by the three (3) possible multiple choice answers, will be read aloud two (2) times only. All questions will also be displayed visually by power point or transparencies. 6. Questions for Grade Category 3-6 will be somewhat different and easier than those asked Grade Categories 7-12. See also "EXPLANATION OF AWARDS." ANSWER SYSTEM: 1. An "answer sheet" will be provided to each individual player. Each player must keep his/her eyes forward, their writing hand on their score sheet while each round is being conducted. As Christians, cheating anytime, and doubly on a Bible test, should be unthinkable. 2. The letters A, B, and C (the three (3) possible multiple choice answers per question) for each of the twenty (20) questions will appear on prepared score sheets which will be given to each individual player at the beginning of each round. 3. Each player must privately mark his/her answer (with the pencil provided to each player) IMMEDIATELY AND AT THE SAME TIME on his/her score sheet when "answers please" is called. At no time is a player to look over to attempt to see the answer marked by another player. 4. If a team member marks his/her answer BEFORE "answers please" is called, NO SCORE WILL BE GIVEN FOR THE ENTIRE TEAM ON THAT QUESTION. 5. If a team member is not ready or fails to mark his/her answer on the score sheet when "answers please" is called, NO SCORE FOR THAT INDIVIDUAL WILL BE GIVEN FOR THAT QUESTION. 6. THERE WILL BE NO REQUESTS FOR A THIRD READING OF THE QUESTION, MULTIPLE CHOICE ANSWER, OR SCRIPTURE REFERENCE. COME PREPARED FOR ONLY TWO READINGS! NO ANSWERS WILL BE SPELLED! Page 87 of 136 Leadership Training for Christ – Northwest Region 2014 SCORING/POINTS: 1. Each team member will have the opportunity to score points for his / her team on each question. 2. There will be no "phantom" scores or any type of averaging for incomplete teams. Players on incomplete teams will compete for individual awards only. 3. For 7th – 12th, each individual correct answer will be worth ten (10) points, with a total possible of 200 points per round per team member, resulting in 800 total possible points per team member for the four (4) rounds of the event. For 3rd - 6th, each individual correct answer will be worth ten (10) points, with a total possible of 150 points per round per team member, resulting in 600 total possible points per team member for the four (4) rounds of the event. 4. Awards will be based on the most cumulative points earned in all rounds, both for each team (3200 or 2400 total points possible) and each individual (800 or 600 total points possible). 5. Both team and individual scores will be supplied to the individual congregations in their take-home envelopes. To the extent possible, scores will also be provided to the players and participants at the conclusion of the Bible Bowl Event on Friday evening. OFFICIALS: Reader: The Reader will read the questions and three (3) possible multiple choice answers aloud, keep track of time and have the final ruling over any disputed questions. A QUESTION MAY BE ASKED ABOUT THE VALIDITY OF ANY QUESTION ONLY AFTER THE ROUND. At that time, the “Reader” will confer with a “panel of experts” who will look up the scripture on the disputed question and make a decision. The ruling will be final, with no further discussion. If a question is deemed to be invalid, that question will be thrown out and everyone will receive credit. Panel of “Experts”: Three adults selected to look up in the Bible any disputed question to confirm the correct answer for the Reader. Scorekeeper / Coach: 1. Each congregation is to enroll one (1) ADULT COACH per team registered. 2. Responsible for monitoring the players on one or more teams with respect to assuring that answers are marked when "answers please" is called and that those players adhere to the Bible Bowl Rules. 3. The COACH will be supplied with an answer template from which he or she may score each player's score sheet (See also “COACHES AND SCORESHEETS”). COACHES AND SCORESHEETS: 1. Coaches will be asked to initial each player's score sheet after it has been scored, if an answer template is used to manually score players' score sheets. After the Coach initials the score sheet, it becomes "sacred writ" and will not be checked again. So...this behooves all Coaches to observe and/or check the scoring of each score sheet carefully before that Coach initials it. Page 88 of 136 Leadership Training for Christ – Northwest Region 2014 EXPLANATION OF AWARDS: 1. Scoring for awards FOR BOTH GRADE CATEGORIES (3-6 and 7-12) is based upon a point-spread method. The separate point spreads for each Grade Category for Individual and Team Ratings are developed after determining the total points accumulated for all four (4) rounds by each individual player and each team (cumulative total of the four (4) players' individual scores) within each Grade Category. There are three (3) Individual and Team Ratings (Gold, Silver and Bronze) which can be received by each individual player and each team within each Grade Category. A Gold Individual Rating will be awarded to those individual players achieving the upper point spread, a Silver Individual Rating will be awarded to those individual players achieving the middle point spread and a Bronze Individual Rating will be awarded to those individual players achieving the lower point spread. Similarly, a Gold Team Rating will be awarded to those teams achieving the upper point spread, a Silver Team Rating will be awarded to those teams achieving the middle point spread and a Bronze Team Rating will be awarded to those teams achieving the lower point spread. 2. Individual Awards: Each individual in each Grade Category qualifying for a Gold, Silver or Bronze Rating will receive an appropriately colored plate for their individual plaque. 3. Team Awards: Individual players whose team receives a Gold, Silver or Bronze Team Rating will receive the corresponding appropriately colored plate for their individual plaques. ADDITIONALLY, a team plate will be awarded to each team in each Grade Category to hang on the congregational plaque. GENERAL: SHHHHHH!!! 1. Doors will be closed at the scheduled start of any round. Teams or team members not inside will forfeit that round. Coaches/Directors need to make sure no team is late. 2. No one is allowed to enter or leave the event room while questions are being asked. Please enter or leave the event room during the allotted break times. 3. No talking by players or spectators is permitted while the event is in progress. Players and spectators are to be as quiet as possible so as to avoid any distraction or disruption of the event. No outbursts by a player after an answer is given is permitted. 4. No physical contact between individual team members and/or their Coaches or spectators is permitted. 5. Players are not to eat (candy, etc.) and/or drink during the rounds. Don’t distract. This will be held in the location where Bible Bowl will be conducted. It is requested that all coaches attend this meeting to review rules, pick up team folders and make any applicable team changes. AS IN EVERYTHING WE DO, PLEASE UPHOLD THE ATTITUDES AND DECORUM WHICH REFLECT THE NATURE OF OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST. WHILE BIBLE BOWL IS A "COMPETITION," AND EACH PLAYER IS CHALLENGED TO DO HIS OR HER VERY BEST, OUR DESIRE IS TO PROMOTE THE LEARNING OF GOD’S WORD, AND CHRIST OVER COMPETITION! Provide judges as possible, to be used as needed. The Event Coordinator will: 1. Announce, or post a schedule for performances in the event room. 2. Oversee judges and room coordination. 3. Be sure that recorded songs and scriptures have been provided by mail or via LTC web site. 4. Provide judging results and award recommendations to the Convention Events Coordinator. 5. Select possible signers to be used at the Saturday Night Celebration or Sunday morning bible classes RULES: 1. Spectators may not enter or leave the room while participants are signing. Participants who have already been judged and are spectators will be disqualified if they sign during the judging of another participant. 2. Applause is appropriate as a display of appreciation. 3. Bibles and song books will not be provided for the participants. 4. Participants will be disqualified if spectators give signs during judging. 5. Participants may choose one of the following types of entry: a. Sign one of the selected songs or the scripture passage. b. SKILL CHALLENGE: Sign one of the three song selections without prior knowledge of which of the three will be chosen at the convention 6. A participant may use SEE signs or ASL or any level of signing between as long as the signs are clear and the message of the song or scripture is accurately conveyed. 7. If a participant is in need of special assistance or consideration, inform the event director so that an accommodation can be arranged. SIGNING OF A SCRIPTURE PASSAGE: A recorded version of the scripture selected for this year will be played, and the participant will sign the scripture. Check for these on the website or contact Jim Hancock. SIGNING OF A SONG: A recorded version of the song will be played, and the student will sign the song. Songs to choose from will be posted on the website. Page 119 of 136 Leadership Training for Christ – Northwest Region 2014 SKILL CHALLENGE: This option is for the student that feels confident in signs and wants to widen their breadth of knowledge and skill. In this choice of event, the student will learn all three songs. At convention one song will be chosen at random. They will then participate using that song. JUDGING: There will be two or three Judges qualified in interpreting for the deaf. An award rating will be assigned based on the recommendations of the Judges. AWARDS: 1. Participants will be judged as individuals and age will be factored into their rating. One of the following award ratings will be assigned based upon the point average between the Judges' sheets; Gold, Silver, Bronze or No Award 2. An appropriately colored engraved plate for the individual's Award Plaque will be given to each person receiving a Gold, Silver, or Bronze Rating. IMPORTANT Video Instruction 1. If you are with a congregation with children who wish to participate in this event but there is no one qualified to teach them the signs to the songs or scripture, a DVD is available to assist. The DVD will contain instruction on general signing and the alphabet. It will also include instruction on how to do the introduction and each song as well as the scripture. 2. The DVD is structured so that a participant could learn the songs or scripture all on their own. That, however, is the hardest way to do this. The DVD is best used with the aid of an adult or friend that can critique and guide. Using the DVD, this person does not have to be skilled in signs themselves. They just need to be willing to encourage, watch and compare with what is on the DVD. 3. It could also be used by a leader who knows signs but is rusty and just needs some help getting started. One could fill in the missing signs from their own vocabulary and then feel confident to teach the children themselves. 4. The audio recordings will be made available in MP3 format on the LTC web site. These recordings will be exactly the same as what will be used at the convention. Each congregation is encouraged to download the songs and write them to a CD or load them on an MP3 player. This way the students will be able to practice with exactly what they will be hearing at the convention. 5. The LTC web site is located at: http://www.ltcnw.org 6. Please, if you have any questions at all, feel free to call or email the Event Director Page 120 of 136 Leadership Training for Christ – Northwest Region 2014 Signing for the Deaf Judge’s Form Congregation (with congregation number) and Team ID: Name of participant(s): Grade of Participant(s): Judge Names: Appearance Good Clothing appropriate, solid not too bold or 1 patterned Introduction Good Fingerspell name and participant number, then 1 fingerspell the title of song or Bible reference to show proficiency with alphabet and numbers. The song leader's skills directly affect the praising of God in group settings. This event encourages the development of song leading skills in young men and women. PROCESS: Each Church will: 1. Register each participant in proper grade category. 2. Submit a possible song leading judge to be used as needed. 3. Make a copy of the song on white printer paper and if possible an overhead transparency of each participant’s song which includes the music and words. The song must be public domain (song is old enough to require no copyright license) or your congregation must have a church copyright license (CCLI) # before copying any songs (according to copyright infringement laws). Place “Public Domain” (PD) or the CCLI# in a place on the copy that is easily seen by judges when placed on the overhead projector.” The Event Director will: 1. Be sure an overhead projector is available in each performance room. 2. Assign judges for each time period. 3. Return judges' forms and results to Convention Events Director with award recommendations. 4. Provide a list to Coordinator of recommended song leaders for Saturday Night Celebration, Sunday morning’s men’s and women’s class and Sunday morning worship. RULES: 1. Each participant will be judged according to nine areas of Judging Criteria. Each of these areas will be judged on a point continuum that will reflect the skill level of the participant as shown during the event. The point continuum for each Judging Criteria is listed under the Judging Criteria of this event. 2. Boys and girls will perform in separate rooms. Three male judges will judge boys. Three female judges will judge girls. An award rating will be assigned based on the point average among the three judges' sheets. 3. Spectators will not be allowed to enter or leave the room during a song. Page 122 of 136 Leadership Training for Christ – Northwest Region 2014 JUDGING CRITERIA 1. It has been said that music is one half math and one half emotion. Song leading may be expressed in similar terms. A large portion of song leading is indeed technical, while an important aspect of song leading is spiritual leadership. Therefore, the judging criteria for song leading is divided into the following: a. a. Words of critique are useful for the participant to grow. Please form them in way that shows love, patience, and understanding. 2. Technical Aspects a. A printed out copy of and/or a transparency for each participant must contain BOTH words and music – NO EXCEPTIONS, NO EXCUSES! A mandatory 1 level of Gold to Silver, Silver to Bronze, or Bronze to No Award) will be deducted if the copy/transparency does not show either the proper Church Copyright License (CCLI) # or Public Domain (PD) designation on the copy/transparency. It is strongly recommended, though not required, that a song be chosen that fits on a single 8.5”x11” copy/transparency. The participant, if using a multi-page song or multiple songs, will provide someone to help swap copy/transparency. b. Pitch: The participant must pitch the song so it can be comfortably sung in all four parts - Soprano, Alto, Tenor, and Bass. NOTE: A pitch pipe or tuning fork may be used to assist the participant in pitching the song correctly. Using either is not mandatory and will not impact points awarded positively or negatively. c. Tempo: The participant should employ the correct beat and the appropriate mood for the song. d. Volume - Projection: The participant's voice should be loud enough to be heard by the judges while the song is being led. The judges may not be sitting at the front of the room. e. Verses / Verse Transition:: Each participant will lead two verses, and only two verses. NO EXCEPTIONS. The two verses must be led as the music dictates. The participant should follow (and lead) the dynamic markings of the music – fermatas, crescendos, ritardandos, etc.- which indicate whether the music should be soft or loud, fast or slow, etc. Good movement from one verse to the next is expected. - NOTE: A song with a single verse may be repeated once to fulfill this criterion. Arrangements will be allowed. (For example: “Two verses, then the chorus”, etc.) However, the arrangement must transition well between the verses. Arrangements may be from two songs as long as ONLY two verses are led. That means one verse each from each song. Both songs, if used, must be sung without ANY break. In other words, the second song must be led with a smooth transition from the first song. Keep in mind that the ability to lead the group will be impacted by the song or songs selected! 3. Spiritual Aspects a. Poise: It’s only natural to be nervous in front of a group of people, but does the participant channel this nervousness to excel? Does the participant give the impression that he/she is prepared to lead this song? Is the participant ready and confident to perform the task at hand? Does the participant place the transparency on the overhead projector correctly the FIRST time? Does the participant exhibit good volume and diction when announcing the song? b. Interaction: Song leading never just entails a single individual worshiping God. Rather, song leading is an individual communicating with the body, and the body communicating praise to the Lord. Therefore, is the participant worshiping with the group or by him/her self? Is EYE CONTACT present, or does the participant Page 123 of 136 Leadership Training for Christ – Northwest Region 2014 rely on the music too much – i.e. “staring” at it? Does the participant take charge of the group? c. Spirit of Worship: Does the participant set the tone, mood, and atmosphere for the group? Does the participant’s expression and appearance reflect the song being sung? Does the participant sing with the spirit and sing with the understanding of the song being sung? (I Corinthians 14:15). 4. Overall Effectiveness: Would the judges consider asking the participant to lead the singing at a group gathering? AWARDS: 1. Each individual will be rated according to the following scale: 2. Gold = Majority of categories marked Gold, Silver = Majority of categories marked Silver, Bronze = Majority of categories marked Bronze. 3. An appropriately colored engraved plate for the individual’s Award Plaque will be given to each person receiving a Gold, Silver, or Bronze rating. PROCESS: Each participating church will: 1. Register speakers by proper grade. 2. Provide one male and one female judge in this event if possible, to be used as needed. 3. Have each speaker at the proper room before the event begins. The Event Director will: 1. Assign participants to event rooms, and set a speaking order. 2. Assign judges and a timekeeper to each room. 3. Provide judging results and award recommendations to the Convention Events Coordinator. 4. Provide a list to Mike Reeves of 6-8 suggested speakers for Saturday Night Celebration, Sunday morning men’s class and women’s class, and worship. RULES: 1. Participants will develop an original speech which is related to the LTC theme. 2. Participants in grades nine (9) through twelve (12) may not use a Bible character as their topic. 4. A single note card no larger than 3" X 5" index card is permitted. If more than one card is used there will be a penalty of 3 points deducted from the total score. The same speech may not be used by another speaker. 5. The duration of the speech should be three (3) to six (6) minutes. For each thirty (30) seconds that a speaker is over or under the prescribed time limits, 2 points will be subtracted. At the speaker’s request the timekeeper will indicate when 3, 5, and 6 minutes have elapsed. 6. Spectators may not enter or leave the room while participants are speaking. 7. No participant may be taped without their advance approval and appropriate notification to the judges. Any video or audio equipment must be set up prior to the event and must be stationary. 8. Speakers may use visual aids, not props, during speeches. The Bible is not considered a prop. Speakers using props will lose 5 points. Visual aids should aid in making a point, not become the dominant factor of a speech. They must not become an obvious additional “note card” for the speaker to follow. 9. Speeches MAY be memorized but NOT read! A participant who reads his/her speech will be disqualified. The speaker should know his/her subject, and speak from simple notes. 10. Men and boys will be allowed to listen to the girls' speeches. 11. This event is not a dramatic interpretation. The judges will decide if the speech is overly dramatic with excessive use of dramatic techniques. Page 126 of 136 Leadership Training for Christ – Northwest Region 2014 AWARDS: 1. Our children are blessed with growth in direct proportion to the effort they give as they study and practice the events they enter, whether it’s Bible Bowl, Christian Art, Song Leading, Signing, Drama, etc. This is actually true of the convention itself. But just as the convention offers testing, audience, and practice to the developing skills, Saturday Night Celebration is an additional convention opportunity for further experience. It also is a time of honor and encouragement for the efforts expended. It is our intention to showcase as many individuals, groups, and congregations as possible, while also attempting to recognize talent, hard work, and the exceptional examples of expertise in the various events. We would like for celebration performances to show what we are looking for, in an effort to challenge others to reach higher, without discouraging anyone. It is our desire that every LTC participant would aspire to do his / her very best to the glory of God, and to make the presentation selection process very difficult! We praise God for every one of you, for the beautiful talents He has given, and your willingness to use and improve them. We hope that all will find CELEBRATION an enjoyable, exciting time, and an additional motivation to do your very best in each event you enter. Notes to all Church Coordinators!! 1. It is imperative that the celebration Director, knows who will be available for performance on Saturday night. A form to indicate your intention to be present is in the Church Coordinator’s packet. It must be completed and returned to the registration room by noon Saturday. 2. Notification of all groups and individuals selected to perform at the Saturday Night Celebration will be posted on the CELEBRATION BULLETIN BOARD as soon as possible after the event is completed. It is your responsibility to confirm this with the Saturday Celebration Coordinator, or by signing the appropriate space on the notification card on the bulletin board. If not confirmed, another participant will be selected. Note to all Event Directors!! When submitting individual or group finalists, please submit at least one alternative.
