SUMMARY
The Chantilly Domain expands over 20,000 acres
of land, in the midst of one of the largest forests
in the Paris region. It encompasses the château
and adjoining the Condé museum, its park and
gardens, its Great Stables and the Museum of
the Horse it accommodates. Passed down from
the Bourbon-Condé, cousins of Louis XIV, to
Henri of Orleans, the son of the last king LouisPhilippe in the 19th century, this ensemble thus
portrays the essence of French patrimony in its
various aspects, as one of the best examples of
princely grandeur France has to offer.

An patron and collector of art and manuscripts, the

illuminated manuscripts.

land of contrasts.
Great Stables
70’
Built in the 18th century, the Great Stables are considered
amongst the most beautiful in the world. They now host
about thirty horses of different breeds. According to
legend, Louis Henri, Duc de Bourbon, Prince of Condé,
believed that he would be reincarnated as a horse after
his death. In 1719, he asked the architect Jean Aubert to
build stables that befitted his rank.
➤ The Museum of the Horse 40’
The museum blends of art the horse with the study of the
animal’s anthropology and evolution through the ages,
displaying about two hundred objects that show the
horse’s importance from the beginning of civilization :
paintings, prints, fabrics, sculptures, broadcasting
documents, equestrian equipment… The typological,
geographical and temporal diversity of this collection
of objects is enhanced by the addition of masterpieces
from the Condé museum’s archives, as well as pieces
loaned from many important collectors.
