Online learning is not for every student, but it can be an excellent choice for some. You do need to understand that learning online can be just as difficult and sometimes more difficult than taking a class in a traditional classroom. Students are allowed to take two courses above their traditional school schedule, however, this is not always recommended. Students and parents need to seriously consider whether taking more than a regular school schedule is in the best interest of their student. Who can enroll? Students can take courses through Utah Students Connect if they are enrolled in a public school within one of the participating school districts: Davis Jordan Murray Nebo Park City Tooele When can I enroll? Enrollment happens on a quarter basis. Please see the calendar at the beginning of this manual or on the Utah Students Connect website at http://www.utahstudentsconnect.org for current dates. How do I register? A student must be enrolled in a school of one of the participating districts to enroll in USC courses. If you are enrolled in one of the participating school districts see your school counselor and tell them you would like to register for a Utah Students Connect online course. The counselor will gather the information necessary for your registration and submit the form to USC. How do I know I am enrolled? Once your counselor has registered you for a course, Utah Students Connect starts the enrollment process. Within a day or two, you will receive the following email: (IF YOU DO NOT RECEIVE THIS EMAIL WITHIN TWO DAYS OF THE BEGINNING OF THE TERM, CONTACT YOUR DISTRICT REPRESENTATIVE OR COUNSELOR IMMEDIATELY!) You've been invited to participate in a class at canvas.instructure.com. The class is called “Your Course Name”, and you've been invited to participate as a student. Name: [email protected] Email: [email protected] You'll need to register with Canvas before you can participate in the class. To get started, visit the course page here: http://canvas.instructure.com/courses/138505?invitation=OPepzPzoPITWZYpAOpP98HtV3R9er25lQ0CWQ4uv 7 Utah Students Connect, Rev. Feel free to wander around and see what it's like. When you're ready, you can either accept or reject the invitation. Click on “Accept Invitation”. You will then be taken to the sign-in page which states: Welcome aboard! Email address: [email protected] confirmed. In order to finish signing you up for the course “your class”, we'll need a few more pieces of information. Please fill out the form below: Please put in your full first and last name. The teacher will be using this name for grading. Your email address can be listed in the short name box. You will need to enter a password. Please do not forget this password as it is extremely hard to retrieve. If you do not want to receive extra emails from Instructure, uncheck the “I want to receive information, news and tips from Instructure” box. Click on “Register”. You will receive the following notice: You've been invited to join this course as a student for the user account “your email”. Feel free to wander around and look over the course. When you're ready, you can either accept or reject the invitation. Click “Accept”. You are now fully enrolled in the course, and have set up your Canvas account. Once I have set up my account, how do I access my classes? At the top of the screen, you will see a “Courses” tab. If you hover over this tab you will see listed all of the courses you are taking this term. Click on the course in which you would like to work. 8 Utah Students Connect, Rev. November 29, 2011 There is also an “Assignments” tab. Please do not click on this tab for your assignments. On the left side of the screen you will see several links. The Modules link will be most important for you. Click on the modules tab on the left. You will now see a listing of all of the information your teacher has prepared for you. You will work through each lesson in each module in the order presented. For example, your first lesson might be “Course Description” in the “Introduction to Course” module. Complete “Course Description”. When you return to the modules you will click on “Meet Your Instructor”, and complete that lesson and so on. Email your teacher immediately for any questions or concerns you have about the course so that you can stay on track. Please use Canvas for all your conversations with your teacher whether it be an email question or for handing in assignments. Can a student from an outside district or a charter school enroll in USC courses? Not at the present time. The program has been set up to serve only students of participating districts. Perhaps in the future, offering courses to outside students will be a possibility – but for the time being, students must be enrolled in a school of one of the participating districts. Which courses are offered through USC? At the beginning phases of the program, course offerings were selected based on which online courses had already been developed by the participating districts. The Task Force will continue to work with districts to develop additional courses in response to the needs of students. At this time, the following courses are available: English 9 English 10 English 11 English 12 Secondary Math I Secondary Math II Secondary Math III Earth Systems Physics Biology Chemistry Geography for Life World Civilizations U.S. History U.S. Government Art Foundations II Art History and Criticism General Financial Literacy Computer Tech Participation Skills and Techniques (9th Grade PE) Health II Fitness for Life Driver Education (Coursework only) Are these courses for original credit or credit recovery? Students may enroll in online courses original credit or credit recovery. If enrolling for credit recovery, courses are $45 per quarter credit or term. Courses can be paid for online at www.utahstudentsconnect.org, click on “Pay for credit recovery courses here.” How many courses can I take? Students who enroll in courses with a provider can take three online credits per year in place of three credits they are taking at their traditional school. Students who enroll in USC can take two credits above their class load at their school. 9 Utah Students Connect, Rev. November 29, 2011 Can a student enroll in USC courses any time during the school year? Yes and no. The bulk of the courses offered through the program are designed to work with the traditional school quarter. They are designed to require student participation in online discussions and blogs. It is difficult to provide for interaction regarding specific concepts when students are progressing through the curriculum at varied paces. Students can enroll each term and can finish that term as quickly or slowly as they would like as long as the work is completed by the end of the quarter for which the student is enrolled. These courses are open to enroll two weeks before and two weeks after the registration date. Do I have to take a final? A final proctored test will be issued at the end of each term for each course. Final testing will be held at the students’ school, or at the district offices. You will find the proctor listing at the end of the student section of this manual. Final testing through outside providers will need to be arranged through those providers. How do I schedule my proctored exam? Each school district has a different proctoring process. Please refer to the Proctor Information at the end of the student section in this manual. What email do I use? When you originally sign up for an online USC course through your counselor, please use an email that you will check often, and make sure that the counselor has typed in your email correctly. If you do not receive your invitation email after two days of the start of the course, check back with your counselor or the Online Coordinator at your district immediately. How can I change my email? If you have to change your email, email your district’s Online Coordinator through email with your new email address. How do I contact my teacher? All of the communication you do in your course will be done through the “Canvas” learning management system. It is not appropriate practice to email your teacher outside the Canvas mail box. What is the grading policy for my classes? You will receive a letter grade (A through F) based on your final percentage in your class. The grade you earn in this course will be recorded on your transcript and will affect your GPA. The grading scale will be as follows: A A- 93+ 90 – 92 10 B+ B B- 87 - 89 84 - 86 87 - 83 C+ C C- 77 - 79 74 - 76 70 - 73 Utah Students Connect, Rev. November 29, 2011 D+ D D- 67 - 69 64 - 66 60 – 63 Can I finish my course at any time? Yes and No. Courses are taught by term, so you can go through your course at your own pace as long as your work is completed by the end of the term. Each course will have due dates and deadlines listed in each Canvas class. How many students are allowed to be enrolled in a specific course? There is no set number of students for all courses. The maximum number of students per course section is determined by the Task Force based on the individual course, the course content, amount of direct student participation through blogs and online communication, the amount and type of coursework required to be reviewed by the teacher, etc. Is there a “real teacher” behind online classes? Absolutely. For each course that you take you have a teacher that will help you with all of your questions and concerns. If you have to hand in something late, or you just need help in your course, your best bet is to contact your teacher. Most of the questions you will have can be answered easily with an email through Canvas. How often do I have to log-in to Canvas? You check into your traditional school courses every other day. Online learning is no different and you should plan on logging-in to your courses that often. Every message, assignment and grade will be sent to you in Canvas. Check in often to make you don’t miss important messages or deadlines. If I don’t finish my course, will I receive an F? If you do not withdraw from an online course by mid-term, you will receive on your transcript the grade that you earned at that time. If you had an F when you stopped participating, you will receive that grade on your transcript. Can I enroll in USC if I started taking a course from a provider? If you take a course from a provider which is listed on the USOE website you will be required to complete that course with the provider, whether it is a semester or a year-long course. It will not be possible to drop those courses and enroll with USC after the registration dates on our calendar. What if I have enrolled and haven’t received an email yet? If you have not received your invitation email within the first two days of the course, you need to contact the online representative in your district, or your counselor. They may want to verify your email to make sure that the invitation went to the right person, or may have other questions which will help them get you enrolled. How quickly do I have to start my courses? The course invitation must be accepted and work started by mid-term of the course. If you do not meet 11 Utah Students Connect, Rev. November 29, 2011 these deadlines, you may be withdrawn from the course. In this instance, you, your parent and your counselor will be notified. Will my credits from a provider transfer to my traditional school? It will be the students/parents responsibility to find out if credits from a provider will transfer back to their school. Information from a provider to someone other than the student or parents is often not honored. Make sure to check out this information before you sign up for an online course. How do I withdraw from a course? Simply fill out the online survey at: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/viewform?hl=en_US&formkey=dFM4a1JUemp4d2MwdjVuU2lyX2 F5RFE6MQ#gid=0 Click the submit button, and you with be withdrawn from the course. How do I Submit my Assignments? Please submit all of your assignments through Canvas in a supportable format. The format that all teachers are able to open is .pdf. Most word processing programs have an “export to pdf” or “save as pdf” option. If you are sending a Microsoft Word document, click “save as”, then under file type, click on the dropdown menu, and choose “Word 97-2003 document” to save the file as a .doc, not .docx. Other support file types you can upload into Canvas are: AVI Real Audio and Video WAV QuickTime Macromedia Flash MPEG-4 FLV MOV 12 MPG MPEG WMV Utah Students Connect, Rev.
