This season marks the twentieth anniversary of Laurence King Publishing
and the fifth since we started publishing under our own imprint in the USA,
with distribution by Chronicle Books. In this anniversary catalog, we present
our largest list yet, which marks some fresh beginnings as well as our continuing
commitment to publishing across all the visual arts.
We are launching a major new series, showing how the ideas that shaped the
history of the visual arts still play a key role in them today. Arrestingly designed,
and authoritatively written, 100 Ideas that Changed Fashion and 100 Ideas that
Changed Architecture give the reader immediate yet deep insights into the nature
of each subject.
Saul Bass: A Life in Film &Design is an important and beautiful book in the best
traditions of art publishing. Pat Kirkham and Saul Bass’s daughter, Jennifer, have
labored for years writing, researching, and designing what will unquestionably
be the definitive treatment of this great American designer and filmmaker.
We think that the extraordinary inventiveness and charm of Nina Chakrabarti’s
My Even More Wonderful World of Fashion will enable it to repeat the fabulous
success of its predecessor. Let’s Make Some Great Art marks the entrance of a major
talent into the area of children’s books. Marion Deuchars’s illustrations have a
playfulness and poetry that make participating in her drawing games irresistible
to people of all ages.
We have extended our exploration of the possibilities of print by developing our
first list of gifts. Some of these, such as My Wonderful World of Fashion Postcards,
accompany the books. Others, such as Fashion Face-Off or Bicycle Travel Journal
come from our engagement with great illustrators or, in the case of the Magma
Sketchbooks, with the creative arts generally. Gifts such as these will be
a continuing feature of our list.
Underlying the program as a whole is our fast developing list of student books,
represented by titles such as Thinking about Architecture, Patternmaking, and
Rethinking Design and Interiors. Our commitment here is to produce authoritative
texts that are well designed and inexpensively priced to appeal to the visually
aware student.
I would like to thank you—booksellers, customers, and readers—for your
support and to say how much I look forward to working with you in the future.

100 Ideas that Changed Fashion
Harriet Worsley
100 Ideas That Changed Fashion chronicles the most
influential fashion ideas that changed womenswear
in the West from 1900 to the present day. This unique
volume is visually arresting, exciting to read, and
an inspiring fashion bible. Charting the incidents
and ideas that changed the way women dress, it
provides an unprecedented perspective on the history
of twentieth-century fashion. Rather than just
documenting the changes in fashion, it explains why
these changes happened. From the invention of the
bias cut and the stiletto heel to designers such as Coco
Chanel who changed the way we think about clothes,
the book is innovative, intelligent, and an entertaining
visual feast.
Harriet Worsley studied fashion at Central Saint Martins College
of Art & Design, where she teaches fashion communication and
fashion journalism today. She worked as a fashion and interiors
journalist before starting a career in garden design. Her previous
publications include Decades of Fashion and Classics of Fashion.

Saul Bass
A Life in Film & Design
Jennifer Bass and Pat Kirkham
With a foreword by Martin Scorsese
Saul Bass (1920–1996) created some of the most
compelling images of American postwar visual
culture. Having extended the remit of graphic
design to include film titles, he went on to transform
the genre. His best-known works include a series
of unforgettable posters and title sequences for
films such as Alfred Hitchcock’s Vertigo and Otto
Preminger’s The Man With the Golden Arm and
Anatomy of a Murder. He also created some of the
most famous logos and corporate identity campaigns
of the century, including those for major companies
such as AT&T, Quaker Oats, United Airlines,
and Minolta.
His wife and collaborator, Elaine, joined the
Bass office in the late 1950s. Together they created
an impressive series of award-winning short films,
including the Oscar-winning Why Man Creates,
as well as an equally impressive series of film titles,
ranging from Stanley Kubrick’s Spartacus in the
early 1960s to Martin Scorsese’s Cape Fear and
Casino in the 1990s.
With a foreword by Martin Scorsese, designed
by Jennifer, Saul Bass’s daughter and written
by distinguished design historian Pat Kirkham,
who knew Saul Bass personally, this book features
images from the Bass archive, providing an in-depth
account of one of the leading graphic artists of the
20th century.
Pat Kirkham is Professor in the History of Design, Decorative
Arts and Culture at the Bard Graduate Center for Studies in the
Decorative Arts, Design & Culture, New York. She has written
and edited a number of books, including Charles and Ray Eames
(1998) and Women Designers in the USA 1900–2000 (2001).
Jennifer Bass is a designer and daughter of Saul and Elaine Bass.

Cut & Paste
21st-Century Collage
Richard Brereton with Caroline Roberts
In the digital age, the original meaning of cut and
paste has been replaced with a few clicks of a mouse.
In response to this, artists have returned to using more
traditional methods of making images. There has been
a resurgence of drawing and illustration and collage
is its natural progression. Increasingly, collage is being
used in ads, magazine editorials, fashion spreads,
street art, album covers, animation, and websites.
Cut & Paste brings together images from more than
40 artists, including Serge Bloch, Borsodi Bela, Sara
Fanelli, Christoph Niemann, and Sergei Sviatchenko.
The surreal juxtaposition of images provokes thought,
humor, and understanding, making two-dimensional
images three.
Richard Brereton began his career in the London and New York art
markets, before becoming a television producer for the BBC. In 2009,
he edited and compiled Sketchbooks for Laurence King Publishing.
Caroline Roberts is a journalist who writes about the graphic
arts, and is a founder of Grafik magazine.

Gavin Lucas
The world of advertising moves fast in an ever-changing
media landscape, and the traditional channels don’t

This book showcases the many inventive tactics
that are being used today. Projects include an inflatable
pig wedged between two skinny Manhattan buildings
to advertise dental floss; a version of the Sistine Chapel
ceiling in a railway station; and street musicians
launching a new Oasis album in New York.
Over 60 international campaigns are featured,
grouped according to strategy: Stunts, Street
Propaganda, Sneaky Maneuvers, Site-specific,
and Multi-fronted Attack.
Gavin Lucas lives in London, UK, and is Senior Writer at the leading

Miniatures and miniaturized settings induce
a disquieting experience of distance, and artists
use it to explore the very contemporary feelings
of alienation, displacement, and estrangement.
The small people and small worlds depicted
in this book give us a new sense of perspective,
transporting us to a new dimension, an enchanted
city where people can take lifts on the back of a slug
at rush hour, put up wall-sized polaroid posters,
or shoot down bumblebees.

A History of Western Architecture
Fifth Edition
David Watkin
In his highly acclaimed reference work David Watkin
traces the history of western architecture from the
earliest times in Mesopotamia and Egypt to the eclectic
styles of the twenty-first century.
The author emphasizes the ongoing vitality
of the Classical language of architecture, underlining
the continuity between, say, the work of Ictinus in
fifth-century bc Athens and that of McKim, Mead,
and White in twentieth-century New York.
Authoritative, comprehensive, and highly
illustrated, this fifth edition has been expanded
to bring the story of western architecture right up to
date and includes a separate final chapter on twentyfirst century developments, including computers and
architecture, and sustainability and the environment.
“The best narrative survey of Western Architecture.”
Sir John Summerson
David Watkin is Emeritus Professor of the History of Architecture
at the University of Cambridge and a Fellow of Peterhouse. He has
written many books, including Morality and Architecture Revisited
and Sir John Soane (1996), and is a leading authority on Classicism
and its successive renewals in architecture.
• The new edition brings this classic book up to date,
with a completely rewritten final chapter.

Undiscovered Minimalism
Gelims from Northern Iran
Parviz Tanavoli
Over the course of the past two decades a previously
unrecognized genre of startlingly modern looking
large flatwoven hangings and covers (gelims)
has emerged from an isolated highland region
in Mazandaran Province in northern Iran. No
one had imagined that hidden in the forests south
of the Caspian Sea there could have existed such
sophisticated treasures, which in their deceptive
simplicity of abstract patterning and subtle coloring
are much in accord with the aesthetic canons of
contemporary “minimalist” art.
Parviz Tanavoli is an internationally recognized contemporary
Iranian painter and sculptor, his work has been exhibited in
museum and art galleries around the world and can be found in
the British Museum, MOMA, New York, the Walker Art Center,
Minneapolis, among other public and private collections.
He lives and works between Vancouver, Canada and Tehran.

Thinking about Architecture
An Introduction to Architectural Theory
Colin Davies
In order to understand architecture in all its cultural
complexity it is necessary to grasp certain basic
concepts such as representation, form, and space.
The aim of this book is to provide teachers, students,
practicing architects, and curious general readers
with a set of ideas that will enrich their conversation,
their writing, and above all their thinking about
architecture.
The book is divided into eight chapters, each
covering a particular aspect of architecture, and
introduces difficult concepts gradually. Architectural
theorists and philosophers are mentioned in passing
and their works are listed in the bibliography,
but they are not the subject of the book. Architecture,
rather than philosophy, is at the center of the picture.
The aim is to enable the reader to understand
architecture in all its aspects, rather than to learn
the names of particular theorists.
Written in a conversational style, Thinking about
Architecture is an invaluable and accessible standard
introduction to architectural theory.
Colin Davies is Professor of Architectural Theory at London
Metropolitan University and the author of several books, including
High Tech Architecture, The Prefabricated Home, and Key Houses
of the Twentieth Century (Laurence King, 2006). He has also written
monographs on the work of Michael Hopkins, Nicholas Grimshaw
and Norman Foster, and contributes to architectural
journals worldwide.
• Clear, accessible introduction to what can be a very complicated subject
• Relates architectural theory to architectural practice
• Suitable for all beginning students of architecture

Rethinking Design and Interiors
Human Beings in the Built Environment
Shashi Caan
The world and the people living in it are increasingly
and rapidly being affected by environmental and
technological changes. It is imperative that the
design profession address these developments with
a new way of thinking. This book points the way for
the design of interiors in this newly complex world
and will be indispensable for students, practitioners,
and theoreticians.
The book is divided into four chapters that
explore aspects of the human experience of the interior,
from man’s earliest search for shelter to an outline
of past and current thinking on design, psychology and
well-being. An epilog looks at such future concerns as
population growth and sustainability and suggests how
the design profession can confront these challenges.
This book is a fascinating exploration of how art
and science can come together for the benefit of those
who inhabit the built environment.
Shashi Caan received her BFA from the Edinburgh School of Art and
holds two Masters degrees from the Pratt Institute, New York. She
was Chair of Interior Design at Parsons in New York from 2002 to
2006. She previously worked at Gensler and was an Associate Partner
at SOM. She has recently been nominated for the prestigious CooperHewitt National Design Award.
• Challenges long-held misconceptions about interiors practice
• Written by one of the foremost educators in the field
• Will stimulate provocative debate among both students and practitioners

Patternmaking
Dennic Chunman Lo
An introduction to the basic principles of
patternmaking, this practical book shows students
how to interpret the human form and look at clothing
through the eyes of a designer rather than a consumer.
In addition to explaining the proportions of human
anatomy, the book introduces key tools and takes
readers from simple pattern making ideas to more
advanced creative methods. Step-by-step illustrations
reveal how to create basic bodice, sleeve, skirt,
dress, and pant blocks, before demonstrating how
to adapt these to create patterns for original designs.
There is also a chapter dedicated to digital technology
and how this is increasingly being used in both
college and industry.
The book also examines a selection of the author’s
own creative designs, encouraging experimentation
with the potential of patternmaking.
Dennic Chunman Lo is Director of the Creative Pattern Cutting
course at London College of Fashion. He has his own fashion label,
Lo and Cabon.
• Puts the techniques into context by including photographs
of finished garments and work in progress
• Shows students how to make patterns for their own

Singapore Shophouse
Julian Davison and Luca Invernizzi Tettoni
The Singapore shophouse is an architectural gem—
a particular building form that is unique to the island.
This book traces its development from rudimentary
shophouse through various incarnations of decorative
style—Neoclassical, Chinese Baroque, Jubilee-style,
Edwardian, Rococo, Tropical Modern—all the while
commenting on the various influences that fueled
its evolution. Each individual feature of the shophouse
is examined, as is its change from rudimentary
out-of-China structure to sophisticated dwelling
house. Numerous examples of shophouse interiors
today complete the odyssey—showcasing Shophouse
as Temple, Clan House, Home, Boutique Hotel,
Shop, Restaurant Coffeeshop and more, we see how
these heritage buildings continue to be relevant in
the era of the skyscraper and shopping mall.
Julian Davison is the son of an architect and grew up in
Singapore and Malaysia. He was educated in England and
has a doctorate in social anthropology from the School of
Oriental and African Studies, London. Luca Invernizzi Tettoni,
a professional archeologist and photographer has over 50 books
to his credit, including the International bestsellers Thai Style,

Magma Sketchbooks
Artists have always relied on their sketchbooks.
This was true for artists working within a fine art
tradition and is just as true today in the age of Macs,
digital cameras, and computer-generated imagery.
This new line addresses the needs of contemporary
practitioners: illustrators, designers, art directors,
fashion designers, filmmakers, and anyone within
the visual arts. Helpful and user friendly, these
sketchbooks tread that fine line between giving
users practical tools and information while not
interfering with their creative freedom.
The sketchbooks are designed by award-winning designers
Matt Willey and Zoe Bather of Studio8. They are obsessed with
print and have designed, among many other print-based projects,
the books 100 Years of Menswear and Angaza Afrika as well as
the magazines Elephant, Futu, Map, and Plastique.
• Beautifully designed and produced
• Contain useful industry-specific information and reference material
• Appeal to professional and student market
• FSC certified
