POLICY & PROCEDURES SUNFISH
MANUAL FOR CLUB LOANER BOATS
The purpose of the Osprey Yacht Club (OYC) Policy & Procedures (P&P) Manual is to
define the policies, rules, procedures, and requirements related to the training, safe use,
and maintenance of the OYC’s Fleet of 4 Sunfish.
Organization
Under the aegis of the OYC Commodore and Board of Directors, the program is managed
on a daily basis by the Fleet Administrator, who is responsible for:
a. All day-to-day activities associated with the sailing program
b. Recommendations to BOD regarding policy or procedural changes
c. Submitting annual maintenance budgets
d. Maintaining or updating the training curriculum
Qualifications for use
In order for a person to be eligible to check-out a Sunfish and solo-sail, they must have a
basic knowledge of sailing:

Be an OYC member, or family member of an OYC member.
Sign a release/waiver form. Obtainable from the AP website under Yacht Club.
Wear a USCG approved life jacket at all times.
Complete the loaner check list. Obtainable from the AP website under Yacht Club.
The OYC Member is responsible for the use of and any damage to the boat other
than normal wear and tear.
The release/waiver and loaner check list should be returned to the Fleet Administrator.
Maintenance of boats
The Fleet Maintenance Officer is responsible for real-time repairs, and the scheduling,
inspection, and performance of routine maintenance.
Sailors will be asked to fill out a trouble report when they notice something is missing,
broken, or in need of repair. These reports should be returned to the Fleet Administrator,
Beryl Facey, 108 Santee Circle who will distribute them to the Maintenance Officer for
appropriate action. Forms can be obtained from the AP website under Yacht Club.

Reserving a boat
Club Sunfish may be used only in safe wind and weather conditions. Use in winds over 10
mph (8.5 knots) is not permitted. Check the OYC website for weather conditions.
Use is “first come – first sail” basis.
Persons wishing to reserve a Sunfish may do so by contacting the Fleet Administrator
(Beryl Facey [email protected] or 426-1982) in advance. Hours of operations are
Monday to Friday, 10:00 am to 6:00 pm, from May 1 through October 31. All waivers are
to be submitted to Beryl Facey.
When removing and returning a Sunfish, care should be taken of the self-bailer on the
underside of the hull.
Before launching a Sunfish check to make sure all drain plugs are in position and that the
self-bailing plug is also closed.
Drain plugs are located on the transom, deck - port and starboard, and the self-bailer in
the cockpit.
After using a Sunfish:
Wash down the boat, rudder, dagger-board, following an outing; and return all
equipment to the Sunfish storage rack. Before stowing sail, check it is dry.
Location of Equipment
The 4 Sunfish are located in the storage rack just before the Dock Masters Office – each
boat is marked on the deck at the bow with a letter (A, B, C or D).
Sails and Booms
Each mast and boom is marked with the same letter as the boat.
Sails are permanently attached to the upper and lower booms and stored together with the
mast, bundled using the halyard and mainsheet.
Rudders and Dagger Boards
Each rudder and dagger board is marked with the same letter as the boat.
Be sure to double check that the sail and other equipment are the correct ones.
Since Club sailboats are used by many people, everyone’s cooperation is appreciated to assure that they are properly put away and well cared for. This helps to make sure that
the next person will find the boat, sails, etc. in the correct location – and in good shape,
ready to go sailing. See attached sheet for how to use the Sunfish dolly.
