Each of our camps are guided by and infused with Jewish values of respect, compassion and understanding, making for a program like no other in Michigan. Traditional Camps8 Camps8All Camps Camp Structure Camp is divided into units according to age groups. The units are given names to develop spirit and provide thematic programs. Campers are grouped with children in the same grade. These cards will include details about activities and any particular clothing, items, forms etc. your child should bring. You can also visit wbcamp.jccdet.org to read about field trip dates and destinations. Forms The following forms must be completed before your child’s first day at camp: 1. Completed Camp Application 2. Health form no older than August 31, 2014 3. Waivers for (Advanced) Horseback Riding, Splash Adventure, Gymnastics, (advanced) Archery, Cheerleading, Ropes Adventure, and Martial Arts. Available on our website (http://wbcamp.jccdet.org/register/waivers/) 4. Teen Tour and Trekkers waivers are posted online. (Traditional camp permission slips for field trips and overnight will be emailed out by your child’s unit head.) 2 Dress and What to Bring to Camp The normal summer camp attire is shorts with a lightweight shirt, gym shoes or other closed8 closed8toe footwear. footwear All campers usually swim at least once a day and should pack a towel and swimsuit. Every day your child should bring: • Swimsuit • Towel • Kosher8style, nut8sensitive lunch • Sunscreen • Bug spray • Extra underwear and shorts (for the younger campers) • Plastic bag (for wet swimsuit and towel) • Water bottle Please label everything with your camper’s name (first AND last) so that lost items can be returned quickly. On field trip days, your child should wear his/her Center Day Camps T8shirt. On very hot or sunny days, please be certain your child wears a sunhat or baseball cap. What NOT To Bring to Camp We cannot be responsible for valuables. Please do not bring jewelry, video games, electronics, iPods/tablets to camp or on the bus. Cell phone phones, s, electronic and pocket knives of any kind are not allowed at camp and will be confiscated (confiscated items may be picked up at the camp office by a parent only). Do not send anything in glass. Sunscreen and Insect Repellant Please apply sunscreen to your child each morning before camp. Additionally, we encourage campers to bring sunscreen and insect repellent, labeled with their name, to be reapplied after swimming, lunch and as necessary during the day. Counselors are allowed to help apply sunscreen when needed. Children without a complete and current health form and emergency information will not be allowed to participate in the program. We encourage you to check with your pediatrician as this relates to your child(ren). • If your child has specific allergies (bee stings, grass, food, etc.) please notify us before the start of camp. This information will be shared with the camp nurse and your child’s counselor. • Before camp begins, please notify the camp nurse if your child requires special medication arrangements. A form must be submitted with all medications given to the camp nurse. The nurse will be present at all times during camp hours and is available to address any medical issues. This form is available at http://wbcamp.jccdet.org/wp8 content/uploads/2013/06/medication8form.pdf • If your child is sick in the morning, please do not send him/her to camp, and notify us of their absence. • Children who have had a fever should remain at home until their temperature is normal for 24 hours. • The camp staff always has your child’s best interest in mind. If we find that your son or daughter is not well enough to remain at camp, we will call and ask you to take your child home. • We will notify you immediately in case of an emergency. emergency. If we cannot reach you, we will call your emergency contact. contact. Medication • Upon arrival at camp, children must give all medication to their unit head supervisor. The unit head will then transfer the medicine to the nurse, who is in charge of storing and dispensing all medication during camp. • Medicine must be in its original container, with the camper’s name on it, and directions must be on the bottle. Parents also are required to send a signed medication form describing how and when medicine should be administered (the form is available online at http://wbcamp.jccdet.org/wp8content/uploads/2013/06/medication8form.pdf or in the camp office). If a change in medication is to occur, please notify us. • Parents are responsible for picking up medication from the camp office at the end of each session. 5 Communication Effective communication between camp, parents and the campers is important, and we will send weekly e8newsletters to keep you informed. We also welcome and encourage communication from you. Please keep in mind that camp is only eight weeks long, and it is best to address any questions as soon as they arise. During regular hours, contact staff by calling 248.432.5578 or e8mailing [email protected] the camp staff will be out on the field and will not get their emails until after 4 p.m. Lost and Found All misplaced items will be brought to the Lost and Found, located in the Teen Center and accessible during camp. Please be sure to mark your child’s name (first and last) on every item he/she brings. All clothing unclaimed at the end of the program will be laundered and sent to a charitable organization. 6 Accommodating Campers with Different Abilities The Jewish Community Center of Metropolitan Detroit is committed to providing an inclusive environment, so all children, regardless of their strengths or challenges are part of the camp community. The director of Special Needs programs and support staff will be available throughout the summer, but it is up to all of us to help each child feel comfortable and welcome. Rainy Days (“Liquid Sunshine!”) It does rain occasionally. Campers in Chaverim, Keshet and B’yachad are outdoors in shaded areas unless conditions are severe (heat advisories or storms), so if rain is predicted, please send your child with a raincoat and a complete change of clothing. If thunderstorms threaten, campers will move inside and absolutely no swimming will be allowed in the outdoor pool. Pick up and drop off locations will be adjusted to keep the campers safe. Swimming The Center Day Camps swim program is operated under the guidelines of the Center’s Aquatics Department and the Red Cross Swim Program. Safety, swimming skills and a positive self8image are the primary goals. • Based on water and air temperature, the aquatics director will determine whether children will swim each day. • Each camper will be assessed for the swim level and assigned to the appropriate instructional group. You will receive an evaluation midsummer regarding your child’s swimming progress. • If your child is unable to swim on a certain day, please send a note. • For questions about the swim program, contact Ronda Brodsky, aquatics director, [email protected]. Snacks Each day campers will receive a PM snack, and on Fridays a special Shabbat treat is given. For the health and safety of all our campers, snacks are kosher and nut8free. In response to the health and safety needs of our campers, Center Day Camps are nut sensitive. Please help us by not sending any nut products, or food items containing nuts or nut products, in lunches or snacks. Birthdays (We love them!) If your child would like to celebrate a birthday at camp, please notify our office at least one week in advance. Any food that will be served to other campers must be pre8packaged, kosher and nut8free. (If you need assistance identifying such products, please contact the camp office). Be sure to include 7 enough party paper goods (plates, napkins, forks, spoons, etc.) for your child’s entire bunk. This special treat will be offered at the end of the day during snack time and Afternoon Ruach. Guest Policy No one is permitted on campgrounds other than campers and staff. Parents and other guests should go to the camp office for prearranged early pick8up times. Payments and Transportation All fees must be paid in full by Friday, May 2, 2014. Before camp begins, children whose files are complete and fees are paid in full will be notified of their bus assignments. You may experience slower pick drop8 off times on the first days of each session. • Buses CANNOT wait. wait Campers must be ready for pick8up at designated times and places, so be there a little earlier than your scheduled pick8up time. • Campers may go home on their assigned bus ONLY. Changes are not allowed. • Rainy day drop8 drop8off for buses is at the main entrance of the JCC. Parent drop off is at the Child Development Center near the playground. The same locations will be used for pick8up if it rains in the afternoon. • For safety reasons, reasons, we cannot accept any changes in transportation after 12:00pm. You must call/email the camp office and include the child’s name, the name of the person who will be picking up the child and how they will be going home. • Campers picked up by car must be signed out. Pick8 Pick8up location is at the entrance to camp (behind the JCC, JCC, west of the playground) playground). Please bring photo ID. • The camp office is open from 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. If you have any concerns or questions about transportation, please call or email Transportation Coordinator Stephanie Nafso. [email protected] or 248.432.5558 between 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. In an emergency, call the Durham Dispatch Center at 248.203.3940 between 6:30am – 5:00pm. • If a child needs to leave camp early for any reason, he/she must bring a note from a parent or guardian (or send an email to [email protected]) [email protected]). Parents coming to pick up their children must come to the camp office to pick up their camper. camper. • There is NO drop8 drop8off or pick8 pick8up at vendor sites. • K’Ton Ton half8 half8day campers campers (9:00 a.m.8 a.m.8noon): Transportation is provided to camp and parents should pick up campers at 12:10 p.m. Campers will be in front of the Child Development Center. 8 • Anyone who picks up children at camp must have proper identification (photo ID) and must be noted in the file as an authorized person to pick up your child or your child will not be released. Late Arrival Please bring children who arrive after 9:00 a.m. to the camp office. For security reasons, we ask that you do not take your child into the camp area or come by yourself. Extended Care Pick8 Pick8up and drop8 drop8off for extended care is at the Teen Center. Extended care hours before and after camp are available for grades pre8K to 5. There is a charge, and parents must pre8register. AM care is available from 7:30 – 8:45a.m. and PM care is from 3:30 8 6 p.m. every day of the week. To register for this service, please sign up at least one week in advance.
