2.0 Welcome Messages
2.1 President Vanuatu Cricket Association – Mark Stafford
It is my great honour to welcome all of the players, team management, and
officials to Port Vila for the 3rd Pepsi ICC EAP Women’s Championship. With six
countries competing this will be the biggest yet and I am pleased that the region
has recognized the importance of devoting some of our limited resources to
getting further behind the development of women in our great game.
We have hosted teams from Japan; PNG; Samoa; Fiji and the Cook Islands
previously for either senior men’s or junior men’s regional championships. I know
that all of those teams have left Vanuatu well satisfied with our hospitality and the opportunity to play
cricket in a wonderful, relaxed atmosphere. You will find that Port Vila lives up to our rating as the
Happiest Place on Earth that the Lonely Planet Guide gave us recently.
I urge all of our visitors and our own Vanuatu players and volunteers to take the opportunity to make
friends with the members of the other teams from up and down the region. I know that friendships
made in sport will last forever. You will find that over the course of many years and many events you will
meet the friends that you make in the next week time and time again. Do not however let those new
friendships hinder your competitive spirit on the field of play.
Take the chance to find out about how cricket, girls’ and women’s cricket in particular, is developing and
growing in each of the countries represented here this week. You may be able to give a few tips or
receive plenty of advice. It will be for the benefit of us all over time.
Here in Vanuatu we have only recently graduated to women’s international cricket from soft-ball, underage, girls cricket and there will be big challenges for our Vanuatu team this week. I know that they are up
to those challenges. I am also pleased that one of our development projects, where we are using
women’s traditional cricket as the catalyst for health and nutrition awareness and education, will be
highlighted on Friday. We are very pleased with the social impact that our cricket programs do have.
I say to you all to play hard and play fair. Respect your opponents and match officials. Pay heed to the
Spirit of Cricket. Let your enjoyment derived from the game and from this competition know no bounds.
I would like to acknowledge the effort that has gone into preparing for this tournament. The effort put in
by Pierre Chilia; Henry Boe and Adam Cassidy and the VCA team of volunteers has been fantastic and I
say thanks to them all for making it happen. I also acknowledge and thank all of our sponsors and
partners for this event. Their support is great and we would be unable to host the Pepsi ICC EAP
Women’s Championship without it.
Let the games begin and may the best team emerge victorious. Let the game of cricket be the winner
and all participants achieve their own personal and team glory by being part of it.
Mark Stafford
President Vanuatu Cricket Association

2.2 ICC EAP Regional Development Manager – Kieran McMillan
Welcome to Port Vila for the Pepsi ICC EAP Women’s Championship in what
promises to be an exciting event in a beautiful part of the Pacific. Having had
only eight months in the role, this is my first trip to Vanuatu and my first
involvement in a regional ICC tournament so I’m very much looking forward to
meeting all the people that are involved in developing our Global Game.
On the theme of firsts, this tournament is the first full-scale women’s event of its kind in our region
with six teams taking part. It highlights the significant progress that our Associate & Affiliate
Members have made in their women’s cricket programmes in recent years. At an elite level, whilst
there is still a reasonable gap between the ten Full Members and the next best AM’s in the men’s
game, the women’s game offers exciting opportunities to bridge that gap and in particular to have
one of our EAP members competing in an ICC Cricket World Cup. In last year’s ICC Women’s T20
World Cup Qualifier Japan showed just how close we are with an excellent win over Zimbabwe. You
may also be surprised to know that in 2011 PNG had more female cricket participants than New
Zealand and India, countries ranked 2nd and 3rd in the world at women’s ODI and T20 cricket.
The team that wins this tournament will have that very opportunity of progressing to an ICC Cricket
World Cup and battling it out against women’s cricket superpowers like New Zealand, Australia,
England and India. This event’s champion team will go on to compete in a 2013 global qualifying
event as a pathway to the 2014 Women’s World T20. Good luck to all teams and no doubt much
hard work has gone into the past weeks and months with this goal in mind. I trust that all players
and coaching staff will approach each game with determination and intent, at the same time
respecting the traditions and spirit of cricket that make our game so great.
The man responsible for ensuring the spirit and laws of the game are upheld this week is also worth
a very special mention. It is a privilege to welcome the new ICC EAP Regional Referee Steve Bernard
to his first tournament. Steve is no stranger to international competition having been an Australian
selector from 1993-1998, then in May 2011 he completed a 13 year stint as Australian team
manager after overseeing one of the most successful periods for any team in test cricket history.
Our ICC EAP panel umpires have a unique opportunity to learn from Steve as well as from two of the
Cricket Australia international panel umpires Bob Parry and John Ward. As many will know Bob is
our Regional Umpires Consultant and John joins us as part of a mentoring initiative to further
support the development of the best umpires in our region.
Finally I would like to acknowledge all the people that have worked so hard to make this event a
success and one that all participants can look back on with fond memories. Adam has worked
tirelessly in the EAP office and the Vanuatu Cricket Association has been equally committed to
putting on a good show and introducing us to their stunning part of the world. Mbae mi hop se ol
woman hemi plei stron mo ensurem se stael blo ol tim hemi stap insaed lo spirit lo gem!
Best Regards
Kieran McMillan
ICC East Asia-Pacific Regional Development Manager

2.3 ICC Global Development Manager - Tim Anderson
It gives me great pleasure to welcome all teams, players and officials to Port
Vila, Vanuatu for the 2012 ICC EAP Women’s Championship. The opportunity to
represent your country is a great honor at any time, however, being provided
with the opportunity to also qualify for future Pepsi ICC Development
Tournaments will be a memory you will cherish for the rest of your lives.
The Pepsi ICC Development Programme is dedicated to providing a pathway for
all Member countries to compete at the highest level of our sport and
therefore the highest ranked team will go on to participate in the Women’s
World T20 Qualifier against some of the world’s best women’s cricketing
nations. On behalf of the Pepsi ICC Development Programme, I wish you and
your team the best of luck in achieving this aim.
I would also like to thank Vanuatu Cricket Chairman Mark Stafford, General Manager Pierre Chilia
and all Vanuatu Cricket staff and volunteers who have dedicated themselves over the past few
months to ensuring that this tournament is a success.

Name: Alvina Chilia
Country: Vanuatu
Alvina Chilia started playing cricket at the age of seven. She was always
competitive in her primary school days whenever there was a school

9.0 Fafine Tenuku Island Cricket Project
11 weeks ago the Vanuatu Cricket
Association launched a 15 week Island
Cricket Pilot Project on Ifira Island aimed at
providing awareness on nutrition, noncommunicable disease, sexual reproductive
health and leadership.
The project titled the Fafine Tenuku Island
Cricket Project has brought together 30
women from Ifira between the ages of 25-50
and taught them a traditional Pacific version of cricket played in full island dress.
“Island Cricket is very popular in New Caledonia and was previously very popular in the villages
around Port Vila,” said Vanuatu Cricket General Manager Pierre Chilia. “This project is just the
beginning of getting the women of Vanuatu back into this great sport as well as provide
opportunities for their children to participate in the VCA’s junior cricket program.”
On top of the regular cricket training and matches the program runs both practical and theory
sessions weekly to educate the participants in a number of areas that currently affect women in
Vanuatu. These sessions are coordinated by many locally based organisations who have been heavily
involved in the planning of this initiative.
“We are so lucky to have such tremendous expertise in the area of community development at our
disposal via our partners in this project,” said Chilia. “A huge thank you to Chief Mantoi Kalsakau,
the Department of Women’s Affairs, the Department of Health, UN Women, WHO, Save the
Children, Wan Smol Bag, Lapita Café, the ICC and of course the Australian Sports Commission and
Ausaid who have funded this project.”
Participants are tested every two weeks in areas such as glucose and cholesterol, weight and
physical measurement. Regular focus groups, surveys and interviews will also take place in an
attempt to analyze changes in knowledge, habits and behaviors of the participants.
Vanuatu Cricket Development Manager Andrew Mansale has taken control of the cricket training
sessions and is excited by the improvement of the participants and looks forward to them playing a
curtain raiser to the final of the Pepsi ICC East Asia-Pacific Women’s Championship.
“We have a great 15 week program that includes introduction to scoring, umpiring, fielding, batting
and bowling,” said Mansale. “Each week we provide exercise homework tasks to be done in groups
which might include things like walking challenges with pedometers to try to improve fitness.”
The project will be showcased to the Port Vila and International community on the 18th of May
when participants of the Fafine Tenuku Island Cricket Project will play a curtain raiser match
before the final of the Pepsi ICC East Asia-Pacific Women’s Championship at Kazaa Field at 12:30pm
with the final to follow at 2pm. The Fafine Island Cricket Project is funded by the Australian
Government through the Australian Sports Commission’s Pacific Sports Partnership Program.
