A note from the Director of Children, Youth, Teen and Camping Halle Schwartz JCC Camps are first and foremost, a family. The influence of family is very important, as it helps us to develop and even shapes our personality. Family also gives us knowledge that guides us through life, and the ideals we live by, day in and day out. Here at JCC Camps we wish to instill the values of togetherness, tradition, and heritage in all of our campers. JCC Summer Camps 2014 theme is “We are Family;” because it is through the lens of family that we view the past, live the present and have hope for the future. I am thrilled to have you and your campers(s) be a part of the JCC of Greater Columbus Summer Camp family. On behalf of the entire camp staff we are all so excited to have the opportunity to spend this summer with your children and to make your children’s summer a memorable experience. Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions you may have about summer camp. I look forward to have an amazing and fun filled summer with all of you! Sincerely, Halle Schwartz Director of Children, Youth, Teen and Camping 614-559-6279 [email protected] Dear Camp Arye Families, It may be hard to believe, but summer is right around the corner. The planning for the 2014 summer has already begun and it will be another amazing summer her at the JCC. My Name is Marie Wells and I am no stranger to the JCC. I have been around the JCC for many years. I started working in the Aquatic Department where I was a life guard, swim instructor, and supervisor. I have directed Camp Hoover and Camp Arye in the past. I graduated from Ohio University with my B.S. in Special Education. During the year, I am a full time teacher. This year I am working with students with autism. Prior to this school year, I have worked with many children with a wide variety of disabilities. I am so excited to be back as the Camp Arye Director. The JCC is where I started my career in working with individuals with disabilities. A summer camp experience is very important for any child and I am so thrilled I can give campers another great summer! For those campers that I am not familiar with I will be reaching out to you to set-up a time we can meet to find the proper placement for your camper. I look forward to getting to know and reacquainted with all of you! Please feel free to contact me. Sincerely, Marie Wells Camp Arye Director [email protected] 614-559-6266 A Note About Swim Lessons, Welcome to another exciting summer of swimming at the JCC. For those of you that don’t know me, my name is Russel Hunt, the Aquatics Director at the JCC. I supervise the Aquatics Department and our staff look forward to having your child(ren) in our American Red Cross (ARC) Swimming Lesson Program this summer. Your child will be learning to swim through the ARC Learn-to-Swim classes. Our instructors are all certified through a 30+ hour training that lets them provide instruction to help swimmers of all ages and abilities develop their swimming and water safety skills. We will be sending home reports every 2 weeks throughout the summer so that you are aware of how your child is progressing in the program. One week will also be designated Safety Week. As a part of the ARC Learn to Swim program, during that week we will teach the safety skills required to pass each swim level. This involves a lot of hands on experience for the older children. However, for the younger children, there is a lot more discussion involved. We will read 2 books about safety called “Raffy Learns to Swim” and “Waddles In The Deep” depicting animal characters who learn pool rules and move from being fearful to enjoying their time at the pool. Please be aware that your child has to meet and overcome all the fears associated with just being in and around a pool before we can even get their attention on skills… or peel them off your leg. All of this takes time, patience, practice and a lot of planning. We structure everything we offer, every piece of equipment we use, all of our curriculum, our games, our songs, and the teachers who bring it all to life for your child to teach your child to swim faster, stronger, and better than any other swim program. It’s true, some children will repeat a level 2, 3… maybe 4 times and that’s ok. Rest assured, our goal, is to move children as efficiently as possible when they are appropriately ready to move. As another swimming avenue that your children can take, please remember we also have our summer team, the JCC Sharks, which we have combined in the last few years during the summer months with our Dynamo USA club swim team, coached by former Olympic Medalist Vladimir Dolgov. Coach Vladimir’s experience is something no other swim club in Central Ohio can claim and we are very proud to have him as a part of our staff. This team is a great opportunity to give your child exposure to competitive swimming while still having a fun and exciting experience! If you have any questions about any of our programs please don’t hesitate to let us know. Thank you and we look forward to seeing you all at the pool this summer. Sincerely; David Holstein Aquatics Director (614) 559-6213 [email protected] Dear Parents, In our continuous efforts to provide the best possible care to our campers and JCC Summer Camps is once again partnering with CampDoc.com. We can’t wait to see you this summer, Halle Schwartz Director of Children, Youth, Teen and Camping Our Goal JCC Summer Camps provide a commitment to the highest quality camping experiences within unique Jewish environments. Campers are encouraged to learn new skills and master old ones, to make decisions, take responsibility, be independent, respect others, form lasting friendships built on memories and most of all…have fun. Campers develop a deeper understanding of and appreciation for Jewish heritage and traditions while also developing a true sense of community. Our Program JCC Summer Camps provide a safe nurturing environment where campers gain self esteem, confidence, learn new skills and tackle new challenges. We encourage campers to try new activities and gain a love for the outdoors with meaningful Jewish experiences. A summer at the JCC is spent immersed in daily camp life highlighted by dynamic and innovative programming. Activities include swimming, sports of all kinds, music, nature, Israeli culture, and Judaics. Every Wednesday has a special theme with exciting activities related to the weekly theme. Campers will experience Maccabi games, an Olympic-style sports program that encourages team work, team building, sportsmanship, where they can interact in an atmosphere of fun and physical fitness. JCC Summer Camps offer many options and flexibility. Campers can sign up for a minimum of two weeks up to eight weeks with a three day and five day option. JCC Summer Camps impact more than 700 campers and staff every summer. Our Staff Everyone knows that our campers are an extraordinary group of children, but not everyone knows that our counselors are extraordinary too. Our staff is comprised of over 100 dedicated leaders, working together to create an energetic and comfortable warm Jewish environment. Staff takes great pride in their quality of work and has their own motivation to spend their summer at JCC Summer Camps, but each staff member is a caring, dedicated, responsible and fun-loving individual. A Typical Day at Camp • Cars and busloads of campers arrive at camp in the morning for the day to begin. They meet with their counselors and participate in the daily opening activity. After opening, campers participate in a variety of activity periods. Varying by age and camp, specialty activities include Judaics, swim lessons, art, music, nature, sports, boating, high ropes and archery. Specialty activities are led by trained specialists. During the balance of the day, campers participate in bunk activities, led by each group’s counselors, and free swim. Each day ends with a camp closing. • Pre-Shabbat celebrations occur each Friday with special activities. In addition, special theme programming helps tie together many of the Jewish components of camp. Daily Reminders Please make sure your child has the following items each day : • Lunch • Backpack • Swimsuit- please send your child to camp wearing swim suit underneath clothing • Plastic pants for swimming (if needed) • Diaper supply (if needed) • Water bottle • Sunscreen • Insect repellant (optional) • Towel • Plastic bag for wet swimsuit and towel • Put sunscreen on your camper BEFORE he/she arrives at camp in the morning and pack a container of sunscreen in your camper’s bag so that it can be reapplied after swimming. If you would like your child to use insect repellent please pack it in a zip lock bag in your camper’s bag. Please note, in order for staff to assist your child in applying sunscreen or insect repellant the medicine section of the Camper Health History Form must be completed through www.campdoc.com. Our goal is to show Israel to the kids in a way that is more than geography; in a way that connects further to the Jewish State. Food and Drinks • Daily kosher parve or dairy snacks will be provided in all camps. In addition, Kosher meals will be served at latenights and overnights. Kosher laws are observed for all food provided by the camp. • All campers should bring a lunch and drink each day, packed in a bag. We strongly recommend the use of reusable lunch bags clearly labeled with a first and last name. Refrigeration is available for all lunches eaten outside. Lunches may not be shared. • Drinking water is available at all times on the campground. To cut down the use of paper cups, campers are encouraged to use water bottles. Campers will be reminded throughout the day to drink water. Tips for Better Brown Bag Lunches All lunches must be DAIRY or PAREVE Pareve foods include anything vegetarian (not meat or dairy) Food for thought… • Cheese (in hunks, cubes, on pretzel sticks, sandwich or slices) • Cheese sandwiches • Peanut butter sandwiches made with peanut butter are great but try mixing the peanut butter with honey, marshmallow fluff or sliced bananas, • Bagel and cream cheese combined with raisins, sliced cucumbers, black olives or crushed pineapple and spread on nut or raisin bread or a bagel makes a nutritious sandwich • Tuna or egg salad sandwiches • Salads • Nutella sandwiches • Hard boiled eggs (peeled for younger children) • Cheese or veggie pizza • Cold Pasta • Cheese or veggie quesadilla Forgotten Lunch Policy: We understand that things can get chaotic in the morning before camp and you may forget to pack a lunch for your camper. However, you will be charged for a forgotten lunch, so please make packing a lunch for your child a priority! Camp Attire • Campers are encouraged to wear comfortable, casual clothes, t-shirts, shorts and sneakers. Campers do get dirty. Do not send expensive clothes, shoes, sandals, game boys, cameras, ipods, cell phones, sports equipment or jewelry to camp. Campers are discouraged from bringing personal items to camp. The camp will not be held responsible for lost, damaged or misplaced items. Yeladim campers should bring an extra set of clothes and diapers, if necessary. • Campers should use sunscreen prior to coming to camp and wear hats. Counselors will help younger campers and encourage older campers to re-apply sunscreen at intervals during the day. Campers must supply their own labeled sunscreen in their camp bag. • Campers should bring their own camp bag to camp, clearly labeled in permanent ink with a first and last name on the outside of the bag. Please label all clothing and towels brought to camp. • Campers will receive a camp t-shirt at the Open House. Rainy Days We pray for sunshine and 75 degrees, but we are prepared for inclement weather. In some cases, regular programming is altered and special programs are prepared in advance to keep the fun and excitement flowing. Field trips may also be planned. In the event of rain, children should still bring all necessary items, as if it were a sunny day. Parents/Guardians should dress campers appropriately; we will be outdoors if at all possible. In the event of extremely hot conditions, the Camping Services Director will use their best judgment to determine whether or not it is safe to keep campers outside. If campers remain outside, we will use all necessary means to keep campers cool. If campers are taken inside or on a field trip, parents will be notified via email. Visiting Camp You are welcome to visit camp at any time. Please stop by the Zusman Building, to let us know you’re visiting, and to help you locate your child on the campgrounds. Camp personnel have been instructed to question all non-familiar people on the campground. Medical Information, Emergencies, Medications, and Medical Insurance • Campers with severe allergies, such as to bee stings or nuts, who may require staff assistance need to prepare an emergency plan with your camp director. • A completed Camper Health History Form must be on file in the Camp Office prior to the start of camp. • Medication or drugs should be given to the Camp Nurse at the College Avenue camp site or Camp Director at Hoover at the Open House or on the first day of camp, with specific written directions from the physician for their use. All medications must be in their original bottles. If you have concerns about your child’s participation in a camp activity, please contact the Camp Director prior to camp. • All camp staff are instructed about the importance of parent communication. If your child becomes sick or injured during their time at camp, you will be notified immediately. The camp nurse is on duty from 8:45 a.m.-3:30 p.m. at the College Avenue site. Staff are trained and certified in First Aid and CPR at all sites. • Medications of any kind require a completed Health History Form before they can be administered or applied. The camp will administer prescription medication as long as it is in the original container with label still intact. Over-the-counter medication may be administered to a child if there is written consent from a doctor to administer the medication. In order for your child to have staff assistance while applying sunscreen, calamine lotion and bug repellent the medical section of the Health History Form must be filled out and signed by a parent and/or guardian. • For your child’s safety, do not send medication in your child’s bag. Please give medication to a staff person, in the original container, and make sure appropriate information has been given. • Visit our website and click on the Camp.doc link to fill out your forms. Policy on Communicable Disease At all times of operation, the JCC is staffed with at least one person trained in identification and management of communicable disease. All staff adhere to routine practices of hand washing and disinfecting procedures. The following policy has been dictated by the Ohio Department of Human Services and is adhered to by our JCC. These precautions shall be taken for children suspected of having a communicable disease: a. The JCC shall immediately notify the parent or guardian of the child’s condition when a child has been observed with signs or symptoms of illness. b. A child with any of the following signs or symptoms of illness shall be immediately isolated and discharged to his parent or guardian. The JCC’s policy for re-admitting the child is also listed. Please be advised that the JCC reserves the right to request a physician’s note of re-admittance upon the child’s return to camp. • Diarrhea (more than one abnormally loose stool within a 24 hour period) - Child should not return to camp until diarrhea has ceased for at least 24 hours. • Severe coughing - Child may return to camp when coughing ceases. • Difficult or Rapid Breathing - Child may return to camp when condition ceases. • Yellowish Skin or Eyes - Child may return to camp when color returns to normal. • Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye) - Child may not return to camp until 24 hours after the start of treatment with antibiotics. • Temperature of 100 degrees or above - Child should not return to camp until there has been no fever for 24 hours. • Untreated infected skin patches/Unusual spots or rashes - It will be left to the discretion of the Nurse, Early Childhood or Camp Director whether or not a doctor should be contacted for examination and further instructions. • Unusually dark urine and/or gray or white stool - Child may return to camp when an explanation can be provided. • Stiff Neck - Child may return to camp with an explanation and further instructions from a physician. • Sore throat or difficulty in swallowing - Child may return to camp when symptoms have ceased or when an explanation can be provided. • Vomiting - Child may return when vomiting has ceased. • Evidence of lice, scabies, or other parasitic infestation - Child will be checked by the office before they will be permitted back into the camp. • A complete communicable disease chart is posted in the Early Childhood offices. • A child with any of the signs or symptoms of illness shall be immediately isolated from other children. Once contact with the parent or guardian has been established, it is expected that the child will be picked up immediately. In the event the parent or guardian cannot be reached, the person designated on the emergency form will be contacted. As the Center is not equipped to accommodate sick children, no child shall remain longer than two hours after contact has been made. Parents are advised to have a back-up procedure arranged. In the event that they would be unable to comply with this policy, special arrangements should be set up prior to the start of camp. • A mildly ill child, one not exhibiting the above stated symptoms, will be allowed to rest in the Nurse’s Office. The parent will be notified and asked to pick up the child as soon as possible. Emergency numbers will not be called for a mildly ill child. • In order to ensure the health of all the children and staff, it is imperative to follow these guidelines. When children return to camp too soon their resistance is low, which only makes them more susceptible to recurring illness, as well as the fact that they may still be contagious to other children and staff. Effective Communication • Effective communication between staff, parents and campers is most important. A calendar of activities is on the web site. You will also receive email updates from your Camp Director. Those families attending the camp Open House will meet their child’s counselor. If, during the summer, a concern arises, please contact your child’s Unit Head or Camp Director. • Camp Directors will be on the grounds during the camp day and will return calls each day after 4 p.m. Of course, any urgent matters will be handled immediately. • Appointments with the Camp Directors can be made for later afternoons or evenings as needed by calling the Camp Office. • Keep in mind that camp goes by very quickly and that it is best to address any concerns as soon as they arise. • When camp information is sent home, it will be placed in the child’s camp bag. You may wish to place a ziplock bag in your child’s camp bag to keep information dry. • We encourage cooperative projects at camp, therefore, large numbers of individual art projects will not be brought home. Behavior Expectations • On the first day of each week, children will be informed of the camp’s expectations and consequences of inappropriate behavior. Although we always hope for appropriate behaviors at camp, problems do occur. Parents will be kept informed and involved in any problems that come up. Problems are dealt with in a positive manner. The JCC reserves the right to send any child home from camp if his/her behavior becomes unmanageable, disruptive or endangers the welfare and safety of his/her fellow campers or staff. There is no use of corporal punishment at camp. • Hoover campers and parents are required to return a signed Behavior Expectation Form prior to the start of Camp. • Aggressive toys such as real or pretend guns, water guns, knives or swords are not permitted at camp. • The use of drugs and alcohol, including cigarettes, is prohibited at all times. Violations are grounds for immediate removal from camp. Absences If your child is going to be absent from camp, please contact the camp office at 559-6251 or by e-mail at [email protected] prior to 9:00 a.m. Although we realize campers miss camp for all reasons, there is no refund, credit or extension for missed days of camp. Lost and Found We make attempts to return all lost and found items at the end of each camp day. However, if you are missing items, please check the lost and found. Lost and found will be located at the Zusman Building. Please make sure all personal belongings have a first and last name marked in permanent ink. Labeled items will easily be returned to the campers. Swimming • Camper swim programs will be held in either the indoor or outdoor pool, weather permitting. • Campers should wear a bathing suit to camp each day underneath their clothes and bring a towel in their camp bag. Campers need to bring an additional bathing suit to camp. This prevents campers from having to change back into a wet bathing suit right before free swim. Camp Hoover campers should bring a bathing suit and towel to camp each day in their camp bag. Towels are provided for Yeladim campers only. Campers in swim lessons will be evaluated during the first week of camp for proper swim group placement. • Aquatics questions can be referred directly to the JCC Aquatics Director, David Holstein. If not available, contact your Camp Director. • Personal safety, swimming skills and a positive self concept will be the primary goals of the program. For the very young camper, water familiarization, safety, and having fun while learning to develop swim skills will be a daily swimming goal. • Hoover campers will look forward to a program that includes personal safety, swimming skill development, lap endurance and pool games. Early Dismissals If you find it necessary to pick up your child prior to the end of the camp day, please give a note to your child’s Unit Head or Camp Director stating the time of pick-up and who will be picking him/her up. Camp Shirts Your child should wear his/her camp shirt every Monday. Photos will taken throughout the week and will be posted to our Shutterfly account and may be purchased by parents if they would like. Camp shirts will be distributed at the Camp Open House. If a camper misses the Open House, he/she will receive a shirt on the day of the photo session.
