Dear Members of the Queen’s Community,
As Queen’s Principal and a proud alumnus,
it is a great pleasure for me to welcome you
to Homecoming 2014. This weekend provides
a wonderful opportunity for us to reconnect and
share memories, make new friends and expand
our networks, and celebrate the spirit that makes
Queen’s unique.
As you well know, Homecoming was reintroduced last year after being
suspended in 2008. It remains of the utmost importance that we work
together to ensure that Homecoming 2014 is a safe and respectful event
on all fronts. With that in mind, I hope you will enjoy everything we have
planned for you, from the various sports events, to a performance or tour
of our stunning new Isabel Bader Centre for the Performing Arts, or a
reception with the Dean in your home faculty or school. I hope you will
take time to meet and engage with our current students, whether it’s at the
Pumpkin Smash with Queen’s Engineers Without Borders and Queen’s
Gives Back or while enjoying breakfast at Leonard Hall Cafeteria. I would
also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has been involved
in planning and executing Homecoming 2014, including our staff and many
volunteers.
There is a great deal to look forward to over Homecoming weekend.
Whether you are celebrating your 5th reunion, 50th reunion or beyond,
we’re very glad you’re here. I know you already have many fond memories of

of the alumni and their guests who have arrived
on campus to celebrate Homecoming 2014! Many
of you have travelled a long distance to rekindle
friendships, memories, and connections, and I hope
that your weekend at Queen’s, and in the city of
Kingston, feels as much like coming Home for you
as it does for those of us who live here all year round.

The vision for the reintroduction of Queen’s Homecoming that was established
last year is carrying on strong in 2014. The renowned “Queen’s Spirit” is
on vibrant display this weekend as we alumni connect with current students,
reminisce with our Faculties, Schools, and past professors, engage in the
Kingston community, and of course, reunite with one another.
In addition to reuniting, another important aspect of Homecoming is
celebrating the remarkable contributions you, Queen’s alumni, make yearround, worldwide. Fostered while students, our spirit of volunteerism and
philanthropy is a force to be reckoned with. Take the time this weekend to
really consider how your contributions, and those of your classmates, have
impacted the life and health of this university and the communities beyond
Queen’s – and will continue to do so in the future!

The 171st session of the Queen’s Debating Union, the University’s
oldest club and the oldest debating society in Canada, welcomes

Queen’s Gives Back is an on-campus initiative that believes in
celebrating remarkable student philanthropic achievements.
During Homecoming 2014, Queen’s Gives Back is shining the
philanthropic spotlight on Queen’s Engineers Without Borders,
as they host their fifth annual Pumpkin Smash! A crowd pleasing event, a giant pumpkin weighing over five
hundred pounds is hoisted sky high, dropped and smashed to
raise awareness for Engineers Without Borders’ national and
international programs. Support the cause by buying a slice of
delicious pumpkin pie and a cup of hot chocolate to enjoy as
you watch the pumpkin-smashing mayhem!

Art Conservation Morning Open House

Art Conservation Facilities (15 Bader Ln), across from Ban Righ
Art conservation is a multidisciplinary field involving the
examination, interpretation, analysis and conservation of cultural,
historic and artistic objects. Queen’s Master’s degree program in
Art Conservation is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, and
is still the only one of its kind in Canada. Visitors to the program’s
facilities can see the treatment and science labs, where students
learn to conserve paintings, works of art on paper, and objects of
archeological, historic and ethnographic origins, including Greek
classical antiquities and Canadian First Nations collections.
A student will greet you outside the front door at 15 Bader Lane
(opposite Ban Righ) when you arrive.
Department of Chemistry Homecoming Reception

Join current students and alumni to honour Dr. Ken Russell,
who has for 60 years been a colleague, mentor, and friend to
faculty, staff, and students at Queen’s University. The Chemistry
Department is hosting a reception in Ken’s honour to mark

Art Conservation Afternoon Open House

Art Conservation Facilities (15 Bader Ln)
Art conservation is a multidisciplinary field involving the
examination, interpretation, analysis and conservation of cultural,
historic and artistic objects. Queen’s Master’s degree program in
Art Conservation is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, and
is still the only one of its kind in Canada. Visitors to the program’s
facilities can see the treatment and science labs, where students
learn to conserve paintings, works of art on paper, and objects of
archeological, historic and ethnographic origins, including Greek
classical antiquities and Canadian First Nations collections.
A student will greet you outside the front door at 15 Bader Lane
(opposite Ban Righ) when you arrive.
