Kanter 2014-10-08 Prof. Dr. Ing. Theo Kanter received his MSc in Electrical Engineering, cum laude, from the University of Advanced Technology, the Netherlands in 1976. He completed studies in computer science and artificial intelligence at the University of Technology in Linköping in Sweden (1986, 1987), before pursuing a technical doctorate in computer communications, which he earned from the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, Sweden in 2001. During his career, Theo has held a number of leading positions in telecommunications research, earlier at Ellemtel AB, Sweden (1996-1999), where he led research in agent-based service architectures for context-aware voice services on the Internet. He holds a number of patents in this area. The research which Theo led, partially in cooperation with the Ericsson Media Lab and Telia Research, had a dramatic impact on Ericsson and TeliaSonera’s operation, since the prototypes allowed services (both voice and data) to be moved to the Internet, both for cellular and fixed access. Between 1999 and 2007, Theo was a senior scientist at Ericsson Research in the area of Service Layer Technologies focusing on Adaptive Mobile Services and Mobile Presence, contributing to standardization in the Open Mobile Alliance (OMA) and Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP). Theo was a driving force in establishing the FP6 Ambient Networks project (IP) led by Ericsson and contributed to the Context Network architecture. In addition, he was key player in establishing the FP6 Mobilife project (IP), led by Nokia, which created a platform for developing context-aware mobile applications, participating as a task leader, focused on Context Application Networks. During this period, Theo was also affiliated as guest researcher with the Wireless Center at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in Stockholm, where he lectured on Mobile Presence, and lead research, in collaboration with HP Labs and Department of Computer and System Sciences of Stockholm University. The research that led at KTH, explored adaptive & context-aware mobile multimedia communication, -service architectures, & -self-organizing application infrastructures. The early results were adopted in 3GPP standardization efforts and Ericsson systems supporting presence-based and multi-service application, such as Push-toTalk-over-Cellular. In September 2007, Theo was appointed full Professor of Computer Science in the area of Distributed Systems within the Department of Information Technology and Media at the Mid Sweden University. In this position, he was the driving force of a new research group focused on Sensor-Based Services and co-leader of the Sensible Things that Think (STC) center at the Mid Sweden University. As a member of the Acreo National (fiber-optic) Testbed he established a platform for supporting and creating applications that utilize ad-hoc Context Networks via heterogeneous networks, and selected in several IoT & Cloud related testbeds in EU projects. In May 2010, Theo was appointed Guest Professor in the area of sensor-based mobile services within the Department of Computer and System Sciences (DSV) at the Stockholm University. As of 2012, he was appointed Unit Director within DSV and successfully applied to the position of Senior Lecturer. Theo was promoted to Professor of Computer Science at SU in January 2013. His research activities and research group are organized within the Immersive Participation research area initiated by Theo and in international research networks pivotal to the formation of new FP7 projects, building upon the strengths of national and international collaboration. Kanter is an associate editor of IEEE Computer Communications magazine, and technical committee member / (co-)organizer of many well-known international conferences on wireless & mobile computing and applications, such as: IEEE Conference on Mobile and Wireless 4 Curriculum Vitae Theo G. Through insights of how to build Internet of Things infrastructures, we will gain further insights as what it enables us to in various areas which are important to people and our our environment. In doing so we may leverage the already existing research collaborations with University of Bologna, Hogeschool Amsterdam, KTH, LTU, University College London, Mid Sweden University, various big players in the telecom industry, e.g., Nokia, Ericsson, Huawei. In doing so we seek mutual reinforcement with other centers, groups and labs at Stockholm University , such eGovLab, Mobile Life, etc. To this end, I took the initiative to form an Immersive Participation research agenda. The plan is to seek continued financing for extending activities within the research agenda focusing on immersive participation on the Internet from EU projects and Swedish national funds leveraging existing cooperation with industry (Ericsson Research, Philips, Huawei, Telia Sonera, etc.), research institutes (ACREO, SICS, etc.), municipalities (Stockholm, Hudiksvall, Sundsvall, etc.) as well as other universities (KTH, BTH, MiUn, LTU, KaU, etc.), and Arts Universities. The first EU project has already been successfully applied for already bringing 5 MSEK. Mobile Sensor-Based Services— At the intersection of ubiquitous connectivity, networked media, and distributed sensor & user information, sensor-based services are about providing users with 25 Curriculum Vitae Theo G. Kanter 2014-10-08 intelligent (sensible) applications and services everywhere, leveraging communication, sensing, and visualization, which enables us to focus on what is important and getting things done. How we may interact with each other and the things that we use has been radically altered by the Internet. The Internet of Things extends the Internet, connecting computers, users and information, to connecting any observable aspect of the world with sensors & actuators. This is further fueled by the sharing and access to user and sensor information in mobile services and multimedia on the Internet. This raises not only questions about required new underlying mechanisms to share, connect, and use in the projected Internet of Things, but equally importantly this raises urgent questions about the nature of new applications and services and how we may apply them in different vertical segments such as logistics, health, environment, multimedia, mandating the research in sensor-based services. Research in horizontal enablers and vertical applications for the projected Internet of Things is particularly important, since its development in view of the proliferation of Internet and mobile Internet services is strongly affecting every aspect of society as well as being pivotal in the success of Swedish industry, both ICT and otherwise. Especially so, since ICT is a driver for the effectiveness and scope of products and services, but also since ICT creates new market opportunities. Research Focus — The research studies not only new models of interacting with services and applications in vertical segments, but also investigates in detail the necessary properties of horizontal systems, services and applications that utilize sensor and user information (context). Of particular interest is the provision of brokering of sensor information in mobile services and applications to 50 billion devices in 2020 that already is seen as a very conservative figure, due to the proliferation of new “smartphones”, in essence sensor enabled Internet devices, rapidly opening up new markets. Equally importantly, automatic connectivity is mandatory in order for applications to access and share sensors on a global scale, as well as the ability to store and mine information from sensors for patterns that are useful. Approach — Through analysis of the properties of new (vertical) scenarios, we derived the required properties of the constituent components in the architecture, and verified our results through, e.g., prototypes or field-trials. The results of our investigations and validations ensure that solutions later can be built and used by others. The research has created and used a conceptual architecture for connecting sensors, people, places, and things in applications of the digital world. In the conceptual architecture, people, places and things are incorporated in a digital world through sensing and the sharing of distributed context information. Application behavior is brought about by agents operating on context modeled corresponding to the real world. Thus, key research topics are: context and service networks, mobile agents, seamless multimedia distribution via heterogeneous infrastructure, system economics and optimization. 5 TEACHING EXPERTISE 5.1 SELF-REFLECTION OVER THE ROLE OF TEACHER 26 Curriculum Vitae Theo G. Kanter 2014-10-08 I am a strong believer in involving undergraduate students at an advanced level (towards a MSc) in research projects through master thesis projects that solve a specific problem. This has the advantage that on one hand we discover talent and on the other hand it raises the quality and relevance of the master thesis projects. In a similar fashion, project courses in applied computer engineering and advanced software development were tied to PhD research work. The PhD courses that I created were specifically designed to allow students from various universities to participate via distance-bridging tools exploiting web technologies. Discussions among students via on-line forums promote the proliferation of new ideas. Further PhD courses were specifically focused on producing a tentative research paper via obligating the students to formulate a clear problem statement with lectures and reference literature as input. 5.2 TEACHING EXPERIENCE I have extensive experience from teaching within undergraduate education at basic and advanced levels, research education, further and higher education. The details are provided below. 5.2.1 PRE-ACADEMIC EFFORTS Significant experience was gained in combination with managerial responsibilities from industrial research, managing, developing, and teaching an associated advanced curriculum for engineers within Ericsson in the 1980’s (se further appendices 10.a-e). This required certification through a teaching educational program in collaboration with the Stockholm Institute of Education. Appendix 10.d provides more specific details regarding pedagogical tuition received (muntlig framställning, undervisningsmetodik, tal- och röstvård, effektiv teknisk kommunikation) as well as responsibilities for both course development and development of a full training program. The tuition and development of the entire curriculum was carried out in collaboration with the Stockholm Institute of Education in a one-year project for which I was responsible between 1984 and 1987. Courses were held in an international context and technically very advanced context, both in Sweden and abroad. Thus, I claim to possess both the theoretical background, teaching experience and pedagogical skills exceeding what is taught at Stockholm University in courses UP1 and UP2 managed by UPC in requirement of the professorship. 5.2.2 OWN TEACHING EFFORT AT UNDERGRADUATE AND POSTGRADUATE LEVEL This entailed: (2) teaching at the undergraduate level and independently developing and teaching PhD courses at the Royal Institute of Technology (Wireless@KTH) between 1998 and 2003, there is (3) extensive experience from the Mid Sweden University from 2007 until present. Since joining the Mid Sweden University I redesigned, re-authored and taught the major part of the Wireless Internet Access course, 7.5 hp. My responsibility was to make the course current, as it was based on outdated concepts. Further, I am the examiner of courses Applied Computer Engineering and Advanced Software Development, both 7.5 hp. As a part of the research environment that I created focusing on Digital Presence based on sensor-based services and infrastructure, I created a two PhD courses focusing on Mobile Presence and Context as well as a new course which is being developed, focusing on Internet of Things infrastructures and applications 27 Curriculum Vitae Theo G. Kanter 2014-10-08 Thus, I am subject responsible for the subject of Computer Science at the undergraduate level, as well as at the graduate level (PhD studies). In addition, I taught classes in Wireless Internet Access, 7.5 hp credits. Moreover, I created two PhD courses on Mobile Presence & Context and Internet of Things Distributed Context Models. Further, I am the examiner of Advanced Software Development (7.5 hp credits) as well Applied Computer Engineering (7.5 hp credits). Finally, I am the co-adviser and examiner of a long list of bachelor and master thesis projects. • • • • • • • • • • • PhD Course, Internet of Things Applications and Models, 2011 PhD Course, Mobile Presence and Context, Mid Sweden University, Fall 2010 Lecturing at the Department of Teleinformatics of the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Stockholm, Sweden: Lecturer of 2G5565 “Mobile Presence: Architectures, Protocols, and Applications”: a 5 point course, designed for advanced undergraduates and graduate students, Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Kista, Sweden, March 2003. http://www.imit.kth.se/courses/2G1326/ Lecture on “Context Aware Personal Computation”, included in the Finger Course: 2G1303 Mobile Personal Communication VT99, Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Stockholm, Sweden, March 1999. This can be achieved by tying bachelor or master thesis projects to the efforts of doctoral students working in research projects that are run in collaboration with industry. Further, it is important to stress the guided independence of students, requiring them to work independently under supervision, and explain their decisions with respect to clearly defined goals, that are set before the work is undertaken. In this process we have to ensure that a scientific method is applied, meaning that from clear objectives, a method and approach has to be selected, and that through verification, validation the student has to be able to explain to what extent the results meet the objectives and any existing discrepancies. This way, we produce (1) independently thinking individuals equipped to take on responsibilities in future positions, (2) results that directly feed into research projects, but more importantly ensure that link undergraduate and graduate education, and finally. 5.3 EXPERIENCE AS SUPERVISOR My qualifications as a supervisor are based on a course for supervision of graduate studies given on August 28-29 2003. I participated in this course after the doctoral defense, while employed at Ericsson Research, as guest research with the Wireless Center of the Royal Institute of 28 Curriculum Vitae Theo G. Kanter 2014-10-08 Technology in Stockholm (Wireless@KTH ) in preparation of a docent position at KTH. The invitation and participant list are found in appendices 6 and 7. Ericsson AB teacher course development and training curriculum 1980 — Significant experience was gained in combination with managerial responsibilities from (1), industrial research, managing, developing, and teaching an associated advanced curriculum for engineers within Ericsson in the 1980’s. This required certification through a teaching educational program in collaboration with the Stockholm Institute of Education. This was considered comparable to 7,5 credit university pedagogical training in the evaluation for the professorship by the Mid Sweden University. In addition, according to SUHF’s national recommendations for teacher training from 2005 — Through the above and below documented curriculum and experience, I have developed the comparable knowledge, skills and attitudes as a basis to work professionally as a teacher in higher education based on the following criteria: • • • • • • Knowledge of student learning in higher education from theory and research in Educational Science or equivalent on the basis of relevant artistic development. Ability to plan, teach, examine and evaluate higher education in science or art in their own field of knowledge and support of individual and group learning. A reflective approach to their teaching role and to civic values such as scientific / artistic, democracy, equality and equal treatment time higher education. Knowledge of the goals of society and legislation governing the activities of higher education. Ability to utilize, analyze and communicate their own and others' experience and relevant research findings / results of artistic development as a basis for development of education and of their own profession. And carrying an independent project which deals with education and teaching within their area of knowledge related to relevant educational theory and research. 5.5 COURSE DEVELOPMENT AND THE ADMINISTRATION OF EDUCATION Course development with documentation, if any, for example showing how course evaluations have been used for further course development. 5.5.1 ERICSSON TECHNICAL TRAINING CURRICULUM (1980-1985) 32 Curriculum Vitae Theo G. Kanter 2014-10-08 Between 1980 and 1986 I was responsible for developing an advanced curriculum for maintenance staff concerning novel test systems at Ericsson and teaching these course to an international audience both in Sweden and abroad. We developed a curriculum for the projected tasks that were envisaged for these new complex systems. These courses were available as a modular set enabling students to return and build upon previous courses. The content of these courses was technically advanced; comparable to graduate courses in an academic program. The novelty and complexity of technologies involved required in particular innovation of teaching methods. For instance, I developed appreciated Computer Based Training and simulation software system; in addition to the development of written material. Concerning assessment of our training methods and content, we monitored and evaluated constantly how successful our methods were for educating customers. We also evaluated the subsequent performance of Ericsson staff because of the high commercial value of these systems. Further field studies (facilitated by long-term relations with our customers) provided important feedback with we utilized to further improve our methods. The curriculum consisted of three one-week (40 h.) courses, which were held at an average rate of 4 times a year. The quality and content was monitored continuously together with student feedback. 5.5.2 GRADUATE COURSES I developed the following PhD Courses • • • • Mobile Presence Context 2009 IoT Models and Infrastructure 2011 Development of a Graduate Course at the Wireless Center of the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Stockholm, Sweden: 2G5565 “Mobile Presence: Architectures, Protocols, and Applications”, designed for advanced undergraduates and graduate students, Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Kista, Sweden, 2003 . There exists a considerable and increasing research collaboration, which I am leading, between Stockholm University, Ericsson Research, Acreo, and the STC@MIUN center of the Mid Sweden University focusing on multimedia and sensor services for IoT applications and infrastructure. These activities entail service provisioning and evaluation leveraging several testbeds, among which the Acreo National Testbed (ANT2) together with a large number of partners. Results have been created in a new joint Vinnova project focused safe delivery of sensor services to households in Stockholm, Hudiksvall and Sundsvall providing important insights regarding requirements for IoT infrastructure, in particular mobile, along with processing & management of massive information flows . The perceived need for research is currently channeled by me to the SSF and Vinnova research planning processes. In addition IoT service infrastructure requirements are channeled via the Royal Swedish Academy of Engineering Sciences, IVA. Intelligenta Social Artifacter (SU/MIUN, financed by iPack) is yet another exponent of collaboration with industry, in which printed electronics combined with mobile communication has recently attracted interest from SCA and Ericsson. 7.1.1 AUTHORITIES To this end there are contacts with a large number of partners, different authorities and municipalities which are necessary and conducive for the establishment of new activities, such 37 Curriculum Vitae Theo G. (max 4500 char.) The above, albeit lengthy, track record demonstrates that I possess the qualifications needed to succeed in creating results as an independent researcher in the area of sensor-based services in collaboration with colleagues, students, external organizations. Such a production is only possible if one is genuinely interested in sharing knowledge and work together with others. I am a very productive person, very much goal-oriented with a preference to create win-win situations such that others feel empowered and contribute to creating new results. Results are not created in isolation, and I perceive myself as somebody who creates a good atmosphere and is easy to work with. I very much believe in the instinctive interest in others to be empowered with new knowledge and capabilities and achieve new things, and enjoy seeing that happen. Simultaneously I strongly believe in a structured way of working while allowing creativity; and I believe my track record proves that I have been able to balance these aspects in a constantly changing research environment. In this, I seem to draw upon what seems to be a natural talent for creative application of technology, drawing upon personal combining artistic and scientific traits. On a personal level, I believe professional life needs to be balanced by, e.g., family life, socializing with friends. I am still under the impression that I have hobbies but creativity is mostly demonstrated in building things, redecorating the house, etc. My garage band and painting will not be revived until my retirement, unfortunately. 39
