Idyllic Dragør has so much to offer – a breathing space right outside the bustling metropolitan of Copenhagen. The natural centre of the town is the Old Harbour with the Pilot Tower, towering above one of the largest listed urban environments in Denmark. Also the fishermen’s shanties are situated here in the lively place “Capsule Street”. The Old Town of Dragør is internationally renowned. Everybody enjoys a stroll in the crooked, pedestrian streets and alleys with cobblestones, hollyhocks, and yellow cottages with red tiles or thatched roofs. Geese and Dragør Geese are the landmark of Dragør. In earlier time they moved freely around in the streets and alleys. Today the geese have their own “Goose Republic” south of town. The life of the geese breeders and the geese is unique in Denmark and has been portrayed several times on TV and film. 95 36 92 79 88 16 63 26 72 67 10 43 44 57 61 23 13 64 76 42 58 1530 40 78 33 82 31 51 7 6 65 46 21 47 68 50 20 80 90 Eat, drink and be happy Dragør is rightfully famous for its ice cream, and also for its many great eating places. In the Middle Age the town was centre for the great herring adventure in the Sound. In the beginning a poor fishing village – later ever-richer and bigger on trading with the outside world. In the 18th century Dragør was the biggest shipping town in Denmark – second only to Copenhagen. But the war with England in 1807 cost the town a large part of its ships, and it was never as before. With the steamships at the end of 19th century the days of glory of Dragør were over. During the Second World War many Jews fled to Sweden hidden in fishing boats – one of which, the cutter K571 Elisabeth of Dragør, is now a museum ship and can be seen in the harbour. Three museums portray Dragør: Dragør Museum with the Maritime history and beautiful interiors, the Pilot Museum in the oldest pilot station in Denmark at the harbour, and the maritime painter Christian Mølsted’s Museum. The military strategic location of Dragør by the always busy Baltic Sea has implied that Dragør has two forts – Dragør Fort which is situated close to the town and Kongelundsfortet far south by Kongelunden. Dragør has many exciting shops, cafes and restaurants. Dutchman Town The village Store Magleby with its pond and beautiful farms is situated near Dragør. Amager Museum tells the history of the entire Amager; where King Christian II in the 16th century invited Dutch peasants to Amager to grow vegetables. The museum has preserved the charming living rooms and a beautiful collection of local costumes and embroideries. It also shows the farming and gardening of Amager in the old days with live pigs, cows, sheep, and vegetables – fun for the whole family. The old town is car free – however, residents are allowed to drive to their house. A round trip on foot or perhaps on a bike is the best way to experience the town. Photos and Graphic work: www.febber.dk - Redaktion: Axel Bendtsen Live urban environments Dragør and Store Magleby are active towns where people live a fully modern life in the well preserved houses. Yes, even cinema and golf are available. The locals of Dragør love their community, but are happy to share it with the guests coming to town. Closer than you think By car: Dragør is only 20 minutes or 12 km/8 miles away from the centre of Copenhagen. The new coast road around Copenhagen Airport (highway to Sweden – exit 16) makes it a very scenic drive along the Sound to Dragør. The trip is also attractive by bicycle. By train and bus: Train from Copenhagen / Malmoe or metro to Copenhagen Airport and bus 35 to Dragør. Bus 350S for instance from Nørreport or Kongens Nytorv. The trains also stop at Tårnby Station where there is a connection to Dragør with bus 350S.
