“Clinician-Patient Communication to Enhance
Health Outcomes” is not a lecture. Only
about one-third of the four hour skill-building
workshop is devoted to didactic presentations. For most of the time, participants work
individually and in teams to analyze re-enactments of actual cases, reach agreement
on what was and was not effective in the cases, and then create responses that would
be more effective. Participants also work together to develop approaches to patients
they are currently working with. These approaches can then be used when they next
see these patients. Finally, participants are asked to choose one or two techniques
that they can immediately use in their practice settings.

Educational Objectives
• Improve awareness of a clinician’s role regarding the importance of
communication as an essential aspect of healthcare.

“find it and fix it,” but of four communication skills: Engage, Empathize, Educate,
and Enlist.

Disclosing Unanticipated Medical Outcomes
This complimentary workshop, provided
exclusively to CMIC policyholders, was developed
to enable clinicians to appreciate and hone
the perspectives and skills that are essential to
responding constructively when there has been
an adverse outcome. Clinicians must understand
what caused the disappointing outcome, how
the patient and family feel and think about it,
and respond in a timely and empathic manner.
