Infections are an important cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality. Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is the most common intrauterine infection and is a major cause of deafness and neurologic abnormalities. Herpes Simplex virus (HSV) infections in the neonate are uncommon but may cause significant morbidity, however management of asymptomatic infants potentially exposed to HSV at delivery is a common situation. Hospitalized neonates are at risk for bacterial infections due, in part, to weak immune defenses and invasive procedures. The emergence of multidrug resistant organisms (MDRO) as pathogens in neonatal infections is of great concern. This session will present updated approaches to prevention and treatment of both CMV and HSV infections and prevention and management of MDRO in the NICU. Moderators: Mary Nock, MD FAAP and Dennis Murray, MD FIDSA, FAAP 1:30pm – 1:35pm Welcome and Introduction 1:35pm – 2:10pm Diagnosis and Treatment of CMV Infection During Pregnancy Sallie Permar, MD PhD 2:10pm – 2:45pm Diagnosis and Treatment of Neonates with Congenital CMV Shannon Ross, MD FAAP 2:45pm – 3:20pm Treatment of Neonates Exposed to and Infected with HSV Michael Brady, MD FAAP 3:20pm – 3:30pm Break 3:30pm – 4:05pm Approach to Multi-drug Resistant Organisms in the NICU Claudia Hoyen, MD 4:05pm – 4:40pm Antibiotic Stewardship Programs Sameer Patel, MD 4:40pm – 4:45pm Young Investigator Awards Presented By: Mark Hudak, MD FAAP Sponsored by Mead Johnson Nutrition 4:45pm – 5:15pm Virginia Apgar Award: Jon Tyson, MD MPH FAAP Presented By: Saroj Saigal, MD FAAP 5 Sponsored by Abbott Nutrition 5:30pm – 7:30pm Trainees and Early Career Neonatologists (TECaN) Reception Location: Hilton, Sapphire Terrace Sponsored by Abbott Nutrition 6 SUNDAY, OCTOBER 12, 2014 8:00am – 3:00pm 8:00am - 8:30am DAY 3 – HILTON – SAPPHIRE C D G H Update from the Committee on Fetus and Newborn Presented by Kristi Watterberg, MD FAAP Chair, Committee on Fetus and Newborn Section on Perinatal Pediatrics Program “Medication Considerations in Neonatal Patients” There is often little evidence regarding the safety and efficacy for medications used in the NICU and some medications may have significant side effects in neonatal patients. Two groups of medications identified by neonatologists as overused in their patients are anti-reflux medications and antibiotics. This session will focus on these medications as well as other considerations for the use of certain medications in the treatment of neonatal patients.
