After Ricky Ponting, Graeme Smith backs Kevin Pietersen's 'bullying' claims NEW DELHI, Oct 10 A day after former Australian skipper Ricky Ponting backed Kevin Pietersen's 'bullying' claims inside the England dressing roon, former South African skipper Graeme Smith too agreed with his counterpart and said the Proteas tried to use it against them to take advantage. Smith, who was leading South Africa during the Test series in England in 2012, when Pietersen was dropped after admitting he sent 'provocative' texts about his own captain Andrew Strauss to Proteas cricketers, came out in support England's maverick right-hander. "Some of the stuff [in Pietersen’s book] I can believe and having played against him we always said if we could get a win and get ahead they would turn on each other," said Smith in an interview with Johannesburg-based radio station Highveld FM.. "A lot of the stuff he has touched on in his book, the bullying stuff, you experienced playing against them and used it as an asset against them. "KP is a draw card and the world loves to watch him play the game. It is sad he is not playing international cricket anymore and man-management is a big factor in why he is not there." On Wednesday, Punter too agreed with KP's 'bullying claims' where he said that three senior English players intimated the youngsters in the England squad. In an interview with a leading British newspaper, Pietersen has sent the cricketing fraternity in a state of shock by claiming that there had been a "bullying" culture under the tenure of former coach Andy Flower. The South Africa-born batsman, who is the leading run-scorer for England in all formats of the game, also slammed Matt Prior, who according to him was the leader of a group which also included Graeme Swann and Stuart Broad – three players who which went after the younger team-mates for dropping catches. Pietersen was axed by the ECB earlier this year after the team's 5-0 Ashes loss to Australia. While he hasn't given up hopes of playing for England again, experts believe his recent interview could end all possibilities of a comeback. Agencies So Yeon Ryu grabs two-stroke lead in Malaysia KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 10 So Yeon Ryu birdied five of her first seven holes en route to a six-under-par 65 and a twostroke lead at the half-way point in the Sime Darby LPGA Malaysia tournament on Friday. The South Korean added two more birdies on the back nine before suffering the only blemish on her card at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club, a bogey on the par-four 14th hole, leaving her at 11-under for the event. Hot on her heels were a hard-charging trio tied at 9under, led by Japan's Ayako Uehara, who orchestrated a bogey-free 63. England's Jodi Ewart Shadoff and 17-year-old phenomenon Lydia Ko of New Zealand stayed level with Uehara after both shot 64. South Korea's Eun-Hee Ji joined them 9-under, while three golfers -- Shanshan Feng of China, Azahara Munoz of Spain, and Thailand's Pornanong Phatlum -were a further stroke back. World number one Stacy Lewis, who held the firstround lead, surrendered it after the American posted an uncharacteristic four bogeys on the front nine on the way to an even-par 71, leaving her five strokes off the lead. Simon dumps Berdych to reach Shanghai semis SHANGHAI, Oct 10: France's Gilles Simon overwhelmed Tomas Berdych in a scintillating final set on Friday as he marched into the Shanghai Masters semifinals with his second top-10 scalp in three days. The world number 29 won 7-6 (7/4), 4-6, 6-0 to enter his second successive semifinal, after also making the last four in Tokyo last week where he lost to Milos Raonic. Simon, 29, is yet to win a Masters title but he is in a rich vein of form and overpowered Australian Open champion Stan Wawrinka on Wednesday in Shanghai. Berdych, meanwhile, reached last week's China Open final and he arrived at the Shanghai quarterfinals without even facing a break point. But the tournament's sixth seed, ranked seventh in the world, was given a rude awakening when Simon broke his serve in the first game. The Czech, however, appeared well in control of his serving game thereafter, firing 12 aces throughout the set. Berdych broke back in the third game to draw level and an increasingly frustrated Simon shouted at himself after misfiring in a tense game which brought the scores to The full squad of FC Pune city only got together in early September where they trained at Serie 'A' club ACF Fiorentina's campus. Head coach Franco Colomba has gone about his task rather meticulously, knowing well the areas the team has to improve in. FC Pune City had set off building their team without hype. Their only big-fish in the net was marquee player and World Cupper David Trezeguet. Despite buying players from the draft, the hunt for two foreign players to fill the void in midfield and upfront continued. They saved their best for the last it seems. Bringing in Nigerian striker Dudu Omagbemi on loan from East Bengal and Greek midfielder Kostas Katsouranis at the last minute has given a more complete look to the squad. Undoubtedly, the pressure of scoring will fall upon Trezeguet and the Frenchman has justified the hype surrounding him in practice matches and his form has improved with every game. Dudu's addition has added sting. The Nigerian wasted no time in fitting into the scheme of things. Italian Ivan Bolado is another handy striker. Their strike force is not the only talking point. The defence is pretty beefed up too. Compatriot Daniele Magliocchetti and Colombian Andres Gonzalez and India's Dharmaraj Ravanan together constitute a formidable wall. Lately, they even experimented with the wall playing up which signifies their willingness to put pressure on the rivals with more number of raids. However, chinks in the armour remain. The side's performance in the midfield needs improvement. They need to settle down quickly and get down to business. For, in this format, making allowance for errors can prove costly. Another factor which has been worrying Colomba is fitness and stamina. The former Serie 'A' player knows the importance of these two elements in a compact three-month ISL tournament. "As far as the format is concerned in Europe, with the Uefa Champions league and the domestic leagues, a team plays a game once every three days. Here too it will be same. A match every third day. It's going to be difficult for the players, but I have 26 players, so I will prepare and train the team accordingly," Colomba had said a month ago. That, however, still remains a grey area as in every practice match the coach has spotted most of his players tapering off in the last twenty minutes and has ex- pressed his concern about the same. FIRST GAME: vs Mumbai City FC on October 18 TRAINING GROUND: Flame, LIFA-DSKShivajians ground HOME STADIUM: Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex, Balewadi CAPACITY: 22,000 1994: Year the stadium was built for the National Games FRIENDLY RESULT: Drew with Deccan Rovers XI 1-1, beat ONGC 3-1, beat Pune FC 2-0, beat LIFADSK-Shivajians Under-19 8-1. X-FACTOR: The coach is Italian and flavour of the side is mainly Italian. Hence, one can expect them to play in the 'Catenaccio' style. Recent practice outings have revealed that the team relies mostly on solid defence and counterattacks. The coach is preparing for all adversities and ensuring they don't get caught off-guard. MARQUEE PLAYER: David Trezeguet WATCH OUT FOR: Bruno Cirillo: Don't let his lean physique deceive you. This veteran Italian stands up to any attack like a stone wall. He's like a crouching tiger and quick with his footwork and executes ball interception and clearance in a flash. Dudu Omagbemi: Dudu takes to any team like a duck missing in the decider as Simon took it effortlessly 60, helped by Berdych's uncharacteristic double fault to hand over the second break, which prompted gasps from the crowd. "I had a good week already, I was confident last week," Simon said after his victory. "I am playing good, I am feeling good, I just hope I can make it to the final." The 29-year-old will fancy his chances against either Mikhail Youzhny of Russia or Feliciano Lopez of Spain in the semifinals. A host of big names are already out, including Rafael Nadal and Andy Murray. Bopanna, Qureshi to part ways again SHANGHAI, Oct 10 India's Rohan Bopanna and Pakistan's Aisam Ul HaqQureshi, having played their last tournament together this year two weeks ago, finished the season at No. 13, with about 2000 points, will go different ways next year. Bopanna, whose individual doubles ranking has dropped to No. 35, will partner Canada's 42-year-old Daniel Nestor next season, while Qureshi, who is ranked 28, is yet to settle on a partner for 2015. Following their shock loss to Santiago Giraldo and Kiwi Michael Venus in Shenzhen two weeks ago, the duo, who won just one title this year in Dubai in February, decided to take stock of their situation. "We sat down with Scot Davidoff (coach), we had a long chat. We thought it was better if we parted ways. It wasn't working. We started the year well, but after that, we didn't have the results we are capable of," Bopanna, who is partnering Romania's Florin Mergea in the Shanghai Rolex Masters, where the unseeded duo made the quarterfinals. They play Croat Ivan Dodig and Brazil's Marcel Melo on Friday, said. Bopanna is yet unsure where he'll begin the 2015 ISL: FC Pune City bank on Italian touch PUNE, Oct 10 6-6. But his bout of self-criticism appeared to work, as the former world number six raced to a 5-2 lead in the tiebreak and sealed the set with a powerful cross-court groundstroke. The pair were evenly matched in the second set but with the scores at 4-4, Berdych got his chance chance to break as he tussled with Simon on deuce. Berdych drew boos when he appeared to berate a ballgirl for being slow to bring his towel. But he then seized the break and closed the following game, and the set, with an ace. However, he went to water. He gelled with the side in his very first practice game and showed his voracious appetite to find the net. Expect him to rise to the occasion when the situation demands. Kostas Katsouranis: The man who captained Greece during the 2014 Fifa World Cup has a gutsy attitude and refuses to be tied down. He's considered the missing piece in the jigsaw puzzle and someone who is a strong playmaker and can play box to box. Park Kwang-II: This Korean is a workaholic, like a worker bee in the hive. He hasn't allowed his diminutive physique to become a disadvantage. THE TEAM Domestic: Dharmaraj Ravanan, Anupam Sarkar, Pritam Kotal, Deepak Devrani, Mehrajuddin Wadoo, Manish Maithani, Israil Gurung, Tapan Maity, Pratik Shinde, Joaquim Abranches, Arindam Bhattacharya, Lalit Thapa. Foreign: Emanuele Belardi, David Trezeguet, Bruno Cirillo, Daniele Magliocchetti, Andres Felipe Gonzalez Ramirez, Kostas Katsouranis, Davide Colomba, Saidou Mady Panandetiguiri, Omar Andres Rodriguez Martinez, Park Kwang-II, Lenny Rodrigues, Ashutosh Mehta, Ivan Bolado Palacios, Dudu Omagbemi. season. The 34-year-old Bangalorean and Nestor might well start in Australia rather than Chennai, the traditional season-opener for Indians.
