Kristine Grace Reyes was crowned Miss Philippines Bahrain last month – the first to hold the title since the contest went on hiatus in 2009. The 22-year-old told the GDN that she was “delighted and overwhelmed” with the honour, which will also see her become the goodwill ambassador for Overseas Filipino Workers in Bahrain. “This is the first time I have taken part in a beauty pageant so I didn’t expect to win,” she said. “In the beginning, my parents were against me participating in this contest, as in our culture they don’t see it as a good thing. “But later, when they saw my abilities and enthusiasm at taking part, they gave their permission. “They are happy that I reached this level, and are sup- n Ms Reyes, right, after being crowned porting me in every step forward. “I am blessed and overwhelmed with the support and care I am receiving after winning the crown. “I did not expect the response I have had not only from the Filipinos, but from different communities – and to my surprise after I was crowned, my followers on Facebook jumped to hundreds and everyone calls me Beauty Queen.” Ms Reyes has sworn to donate 10 per cent of her $1,500 (BD565) cash prize to a charity organisation based in her home province of Pampanga in the Philippines. “My friend works for a charity and she is raising funds to build a school,” said Ms Reyes. “I want to be part of this noble cause and will donate 10pc of the cash prize I won. “It’s a small amount but as the saying goes ‘every penny counts’, so I will donate this amount and keep on donating in future.” First runner-up in the pageant was 18-year-old Layla Yousif, followed by Joebelle Capuloy, 26, and Maria Alice Rodelias, 22. Miss Philippines Bahrain was organised by the Filipino Club in collaboration with the Filipina Ikaw Na (FIN), which is a women’s group tackling concerns and challenges facing women from the Philippines.
