Thank you to all those who contributed to such a memorable and enjoyable commencement
to the new term in respect of our successful Middle and Senior School Speech Day functions,
held on Thursday at the Sydney Town Hall. It is pleasing to be in receipt of so many favourable
comments regarding the efforts of our boys in the orchestra, as well as the choir, and in
relation to the events in general – well done to everyone, on a fine team effort.

2015 SCHOOL OFFICERS’ INDUCTION
Thank you to the family and friends who were able to be present today in support of our Prefects and House Captains’
Induction Service held today. We were pleased to have Mr Craig Moore, a member of School Council and former School
Captain (1974) attending as our Guest Speaker. I had the pleasure of introducing Mr Moore and apart from pointing out his
many achievements at School which included involvement in Drama and Choir, as well as his impressive sporting attainments
(1st V Basketball, 1st XV Captain and Captain of Swimming), I was also able to inform those assembled of his work in
the provision of welfare services to children and their families, particularly in statutory child protection and for people with
disabilities. Apart from being a trained psychologist, he has also managed a large district for the Department of Community
Services (DoCS) at Liverpool, and more recently he has taken up the position of CEO for Interaction Disability Services.
His apposite comments in relation to leadership and the School’s concept of Christian servant leadership as depicted in the
Scriptures was well received and provided an important context for our gathering.

TGS CADET UNIT
From the Officer Commanding
In keeping with current security protocols
employed by the Australian Defence Forces,
many Schools have adjusted their policies in
relation to the wearing of cadet uniform.
With this in mind, our Cadets have been
instructed not to wear Cadet uniform in
public. Until further notice, boys in Cadets
are not to wear their Cadet uniform to or from
School. Boys will need to bring and change
into their Cadet uniform for parade, wearing
their bush hat and school shoes (not boots).
For new Year 8 Cadets, boots and ‘KFF’ or
‘Slouch hats’ will not be issued until they are
required.

The close of an academic year brings accolades of many sorts,
and offers the opportunity to reward boys who have worked
solidly at their studies throughout the year. Speech Day is a high
point in this respect; and in a week or so, we shall have the
opportunity to present awards based on boys’ GPAs at Head
Master’s Assemblies.
Quietly, without a public ceremony, a relatively small number of
boys are awarded School Colours. In fact, this is one of the most
prestigious academic achievements the School has to offer. To
quote the Assessment Policy,
The Head Master, on the advice of the Director of Studies,
the Academic Committee and the Colours Committee, may
award School Colours at the end of the academic year as

To be included in such an élite group is an honour and an
achievement indeed. I am delighted to publish the Colours as

The last Society of the Arts concert for 2014 promises to be an
inspiring and ear-opening evening of music! The classical –
or free bass – accordion is a relatively new instrument, dating
back to the mid 20th century. One of its leading exponents will
introduce you to its amazing sound, colours and character, and is
guaranteed to win you over should you harbour any reservations
about its oom-pah-pah predecessor!
Virtuoso musician James Crabb was born in Scotland, studied
in Denmark, has performed around the world as a soloist with
orchestras and ensembles, and now resides in Sydney. For
this recital, he will be joined by Australia Ensemble cellist Julian
Smiles. The programme of solo and chamber music includes
Astor Piazzolla’s Tres Tangos, Sofia Gubaidulina’s astounding
De Profundis and Crabb’s arrangement of JS Bach’s Sonata no.
3 in G Minor. You will also hear some profound pieces by Ravel
and Bloch, and the humorous Roadrunner by contemporary
composer John Zorn.
Crabb’s repertoire ranges from original contemporary works
to transcriptions from Baroque through to the 21st Century,
Tango Nuevo and folk music. He is an authority on the music
of Astor Piazzolla, and has performed with the original members
of Piazzolla’s Quintet. Julian Smiles is well-known as former
principal cellist with the ACO, a founding member of the Goldner
String Quartet and a member since 1991 of the Australia
Ensemble.

BASKETBALL
TRINITY BASKETBALL
Another Trinity Basketball season is upon us with all boys being
put through their paces as they compete for spots on teams. This
Saturday 2nds, 3rds and all A and B teams will be involved in trial
games against St. Augustine’s in the Trinity Sports Centre. All
other Teams will continue with internal trials in the Old Gym and
Outside Courts as the Coaching Staff begin to finalize teams for
the following Saturday’s first CAS round against Waverley.
Any boy who has a new Basketball singlet without a number
must drop off the singlet to my office no later than Monday
morning with his Name and House clearly marked on the back
of the tag inside the singlet so I can organize to have a number
placed on it. I suggest that you also put the singlet in a plastic
bag with your name and House marked on the bag.
SYDNEY SCHOOLS SHOOTOUT
A new look 1sts and 2nds squads entered the annual Sydney
Schools Shootout after a demanding two and half-day pre-season
camp in the Boarding House, which included three practice
sessions a day and a trial game against King’s. With many new
faces, players are still fighting for spots on both teams as each
group looks to build new combinations and team standards.
The Firsts went down in their opening game to an athletic Shore
(42-49) team as they looked to gain some rhythm with their new
offensive structure. St. Pius’ were Trinity’s next opponent and
with a game under their belt the Bottle Greens began to click,
pulling away in the second half to win comfortably (48-34). GPS
powerhouses Scots’ were Trinity’s third and final game in the
opening day of the tournament. A solid performance saw Trinity
compete for three quarters of the contest, but fatigue and nagging
injuries proved too much for this young evolving group, going
down to the eventual Schools Shootout Finalist by twenty-three
points (31-54). With the Quarter-Finals out of reach, Trinity’s
final game against Waverley enabled the Coaching Staff to sit
back and give all players a good hit out and assess who will fill
the roles needed for this Team to be successful. As in the other
Tournament games, Trinity were still yet to have all players in the
squad available due to recurring injuries and suffered another
loss (25-36).
Trinity showed plenty of promise and if they are able to field a
healthy Team for the upcoming CAS season and play relentless
defence, they will be a tough group to beat.

The 2nds Squad, although comprising a completely new set of
players, bonded quickly as a team during the camp through both
intense training and relaxing recovery sessions. This season the
group consists of some ‘tall timber’ with the likes of Liam Rasch
(11WJ), Joseph Fayad (12Du) and John Bechara (11Mu).
Over two days Trinity played some quality basketball and came
away with strong wins in their pool games against Shore (38-22),
Redlands (41-22) and Waverley (37-25). The only loss was to a
young talented Scots’ (32-52). These efforts resulted in Trinity
finishing second in their pool and a spot in the Quarter-Finals
against CAS rival St. Aloysius’. In a see-sawing contest trinity led
in many times before a run of turnovers in the last five minutes
allowed Aloy’s to pull away for a six point win (25-31).
All boys took a whole-hearted approach to the camp and
tournament and put in efforts that are to be highly commended.
The team looks promising in the lead up to the CAS competition,
and I am certain that all boys will work hard to maintain the
standards and keep the momentum rolling.

CRICKET
CAS 2 DAY vs WAVERLEY
Last Saturday saw the first day of the new Cricket season for the
2 day teams and the players and spectators alike were greeted
with magnificent weather for Cricket.
1ST XI
TRINITY 209 vs WAVERLEY 3-88
On a low and slow pitch our top order batsmen did exceptionally
well, giving us a solid platform. Jordan Martenstyn (12Hi) 69
and Mitchell Geha (12Ar) 71, built a very good partnership.
They constructed a 109 run stand in relatively quick time. It was
an exciting first session of play where we witnessed both boys
hitting the ball elegantly and with precision placement. They
found the boundary repeatedly and ran between the wickets
well. It was a pleasure to watch. Unfortunately neither of them
could go on to make a century, but nevertheless, they should
be proud of their efforts. However, this is where our dominance
ended. Waverley started to bowl more accurately and dried
up the runs. Our new batsmen found it difficult to adjust to the
conditions and the scoring of runs was difficult until you were set
at the crease. Under pressure, some of our boys’ shot selections
were not desirable and became the cause of their dismissal. We
scraped to 209 and knew that we had to take early wickets to put
us on top.
James Webb (12WH) started extremely well, capturing 2 wickets,
whilst Aiden Davies (12WJ) claimed one. We took these wickets
by pitching the ball up. During the final session of play we did not
do this enough. We wasted opportunities by bowling too short
and down leg side. If we bowl to our field, target off stump just a
bit fuller than a good length, then the pitch will assist us.
The game is in the balance. We must take quick wickets at the
start of play and this will be achieved by restricting runs and
showing energy in the field. Our boys have the potential and
passion to come out on top.

TRINITY 97 vs WAVERLEY 1-13
Trinity had a disappointing day with the bat in hand and it could
have been a lot worse if not for James De Bono’s (12Ke) fighting
innings of 26 not out. He showed patience and determination at
the crease and provided a good example for those batting higher
up the order. Defending a total of 97 is never easy, and quick
wickets are a must if victory is going to be at all possible. Nick
Blumor (12Hi) has provided an early breakthrough, and the
team will be looking for a few more quick wickets early on day 2.

WAVERLEY 147 vs TRINITY 0-0
The 10A bowlers did a fine job in dismissing Waverley for 147
right on stumps. Sanjan Naganathan (10Ta) bowled superbly
to record the figures of 3-11 off 12 overs, as did Ben Davies
(10WJ), who also took 3 wickets. This was a very good team
performance and the side is in the box seat to start the season
off with a victory.

WAVERLEY 6-270
It was a tough day in the field for the 9A side. With a total of
8 players unavailable for the match, it was always going to be
a challenge for the boys and the depth of the age group was
going to be tested. One aspect of the match that was particularly
pleasing for the coach, Mr Payne, was the way that the boys
never gave up in the field. This fighting spirit will stand them in
good stead for future matches. A big chase is required for the
side, and a whole team effort will be required in order to register
a first up win.
The season for all 1 day sides commences on Saturday 18th of
October, meaning that there is a week remaining of trials for all
sides.

“COACHING ADOLESCENT BOYS TO HEALTH”

SESSION FOCUS
There are six core strengths in emotional development:
>
attachment (making relationships),
>
self-regulation,
>
affiliation (becoming part of a group),
>
attunement (developing empathy),
>
tolerance (accepting others),
>
respect (finding value in difference).
This session will introduce parents to these core strengths as part of a “mindfulness” parenting approach to adolescent boys. Of
these core strengths, a key focus will be on “self-regulation.” Self-regulation is often equated to self-discipline and is extensively
researched in Australian youth psychoeducation. Parenting strategies that empower self-regulation can improve your son’s selfdiscipline and the development of independent learning.
In addition, we will also look at boys’ “stress response system” and its optimal development involving repetitive exposure to
controllable challenges. Moderating predictable stress in a responsive controllable environment leads to the strengthening of
resilience in our adolescent boys.
WHAT IS TRIPLE P?
The Triple P-Positive Parenting Programme is a multi-level, parenting and family support strategy. Triple P aims to prevent
behavioural, emotional and developmental problems in children by enhancing the knowledge, skills and confidence of parents.
TRIPLE P PRESENTER?
Mr Peter Tryon is a former School counsellor at Trinity and is currently one of the leading Triple P presenters in Australia.
IS THE SEMINAR APPROPRIATE FOR ALL PARENTS?
Yes. Even though the focus is on adolescent boys, all parents of boys in Primary through to Year 12 are invited.
