Phone: (403) 528-2609 Donna Rae There are more than 2,000 Rubimed practitioners in Europe and North America and the interest continues to grow in healing methods that are centered on the mind-body connection. Dr. Daniel Beilin (founder of Alfa Thermodiagnostics) who instructed us regarding Alfa Thermography and Dr. Reimar Banis who taught us Rubimed testing using the Reba Device, both reveal that a person may have a blocked flow of energy from some emotional stress that has happened in the past which has not been resolved and they may not even remember what has happened, but the body and the mind remembers! This can affect the health of a person, not just in the obvious cases of ulcers or heart palpitations, but we have seen a whole gambit of illnesses that can be attributed to unresolved emotional blocks from skin rashes to cancer. When we see health problems that have not responded to any other therapies, clear up once emotional issues have been resolved, we know we are on to something. As always, at our clinic we are eager to help anyone in need. The testing equipment is simple and at the present time we are not charging for the testing at to our clinic to see what issues need to be dealt with. The equipment and homeopathic remedies that respond were developed in Germany. Life self-healing journey. Let us help guide you and find answers. Donna Rae at the Natural Healing Clinic. Companies have made such enormous strides in research and development that there now exists a wide selection of styles. The first few years when cam- ouflage clothing became available, the patterns were inspired by the military. Today, companies have adjusted to the realities of the territory and offer prod- ucts that are better suited to the different hunting environments. Above all, camouflage is intended to distort the human shape and blend into the surrounding habitat. Of course, it is best to have different camouflage outfits for every type of hunt, territory, and circumstance, but, unfortunately, this is not realistic for everyone. Besides, a camouflage outfit that is designed for the type of Bowyer’s Outdoor Sports Serving the Southwest for over 35 years! SPECIA LS HONEST & COURTEOUS WORKMANSHIP Ruger American Rifles. . . . . An easy trick is to imagine the environment where you hunt most often and find a motif that best resembles it. Another important trick to remember when hunting big game is to treat your clothes against unfavourable odours. Camouflage clothing effectively conceals you from view, but as every good hunter knows, big game like deer, moose, or bear rely on their sense of smell to detect what surrounds them. The art of camouflage does not consist solely in the quality of your clothing; it depends even more on the attitude you assume in the field. A fidgety hunter, even when perfectly camouflaged, will be detected more quickly than someone who does not move. Try it and you will see. www.newspapertoolbox.com Conquer Dirt CONQUEROUTDOORS There’s not much that can stop a Viking. Ours is no different. It can give you a feeling of wellbeing. It can help you maintain your will to survive. In some areas, your need for shelter may take precedence over your need for food and possibly even your need for water. For example, prolonged exposure to cold can cause excessive fatigue and weakness (exhaustion). An exhausted person may develop a "passive" outlook, thereby losing the will to survive. The most common error in making a shelter is to make it too large. A shelter must be large enough to protect you. It must also be small enough to contain your body heat, especially in cold climates. Shelter Site Selection When you are in a survival situation and realize that shelter is a high priority, start looking for shelter as soon as possible. As you do so, remember what you will need at the site. Two requisites are-• It must contain material to make the type of shelter you need. • It must be large enough and level enough for you to lie down comfortably. When you consider these requisites, however, you cannot ignore your tactical situation or your safety. You must also consider whether the site-• Provides protection against wild animals and rocks and dead trees that might fall. • Is free from insects, reptiles, and poisonous plants. You must also remember the problems that could arise in your environment. For instance-• Avoid flash flood areas in foothills. • Avoid avalanche or rockslide areas in mountainous terrain. • Avoid sites near bodies of water that are below the high water mark. In some areas, the season of the year has a strong bearing on the site you select. Ideal sites for a shelter differ in winter and summer. During cold winter months you will want a site that will protect you from the cold and wind, but will have a source of fuel and water. During summer months in the same area you will want a source of water, but you will want the site to be almost insect free. When considering shelter site selection, use the word BLISS as a guide. B - Blend in with the surroundings. L - Low silhouette. I - Irregular shape. S - Small. S - Secluded location. When looking for a shelter site, keep in mind the type of shelter (protection) you need. However, you must also consider: • How much time and effort you need to build the shelter. • If the shelter will adequately protect you from the elements (sun, wind, rain, snow). • If you have the tools to build it. If not, can you make improvised tools? • If you have the type and amount of materials needed to build it. Natural Shelters Do not overlook natural formations that provide shelter. Examples are caves, rocky crevices, clumps of bushes, small depressions, large rocks on leeward sides of hills, large trees with low-hanging limbs, and fallen trees with thick branches. However, when selecting a natural formation-• Stay away from low ground such as ravines, narrow valleys, or creek beds. Low areas collect the heavy cold air at night and are therefore colder than the surrounding high ground. Thick, brushy, low ground also harbors more insects. • Check for poisonous snakes, ticks, mites, spiders, and ants. • Look for loose rocks, dead limbs, or other natural growth than could fall on your shelter. 403-529-2385 403-529-2385 Processing of Wild Game. With them, you’ll find a true sense of hospitality, scrumptious places to eat and ample reasons to raise a glass. People here eagerly share their own version of the good life, whether it’s casting a line into the Madison River, peering into petroglyph-painted caves, carving through deep powder or biting into a Butte pasty. In fact, you’ll find the definition of the good life varies quite a bit in the space from the Gore-Tex-clad recreation outpost of Whitefish to the rough-riding cowboy town of Miles City. That’s why it makes sense to break up your journey to the big state of Montana into regions, and come back often. (That, and the whole 94 million-acre thing.) Each region offers its own blend of spectacular scenery, intriguing history, and recreation galore, as well as its own unique quirks and specialties, too. Northwest Montana’s Glacier Country presents the Montana most firsttime visitors tend to picture, with superlative Crown of the Continent panoramas and a laid-back cultural scene. Over at the opposite side of the state, southeast Montana’s Custer Country spins tales of modern day to wayback-when under its big skies. In north-central Montana’s Russell Country, residents preserve a past from dinosaur days, and in northeast Montana’s Missouri River Country, civilization melts away into endless unbroken prairies. Mining-roots pride is a hallmark of southwest Montana’s Gold West Country’s storied mountain ranges, while south-central Montana’s Yellowstone Country’s namesake attraction vies with a host of other outdoorsy distractions. If choosing from six regions seems tricky, try picking from Montana’s four seasons. Summertime festivals, wildflowerstrewn hikes, and rockclimbing excursions compete with yellowaspen autumns full of fly fishing, hunting and squeezing in a last backpacking trip. Come winter, ski hills, cross-country trails, frozen lakes, snowmobile trails and neighborhood rinks send outdoorsy types scrambling for their polar fleece…until it all melts into spring, with promises of big whitewater for kayakers, spring hatches for anglers and invigorating hikes for the undaunted. It makes the choice a little easier, though, knowing that some things are a given year-round: historic hotels, captivating museums, homey cafés and mineral hot springs, to name a few. Really, though, it doesn’t matter if you’ve come in the deep of winter to ski the Rockies or the height of summer to cast into Fort Peck Reservoir—Montana guarantees you’ll go home with stories to tell. Or has it? At a Glance • Around the end of December, Lewis and Clark Caverns State Park tour guides show off the caves the old-fashioned way—by candlelight. Generally the caverns are closed for the winter. • At the massive candy shop dubbed The Sweet Palace in Philipsburg, look upstairs for a tiny “chapel.” The owner jokes it’s where patrons can pray the calo- Prison or digging for sapphires, you’ll stumble into history everywhere in southwest Montana. It’s in the ornamental details of Helena’s West Side Mansion District, testament to boomyear prospectors who struck it rich (and in Reeder’s Alley’s one-room shanties, proof of those who didn’t). History is plentiful in Butte’s towering mining structures— homage to the “Richest Hill on Earth”—and in the Native American pictographs along the limestone cliffs at the Gates of the history, either. Hikers at the Big Hole National Battlefield retrace the action on self-guided trails. In Anaconda, the Old Works Golf Course features antique processing works and black tailings piles discarded as early as 1884. Even quaint mom-and-pop ski hills, complete with home-grilled buffalo burgers and hot springs down the road evoke a bygone era. Glacier National Park, the quintessential postcard snap, does nothing to dispel this notion, while areas like the Seeley-Swan, the Bitterroot Valley and the National Bison Range in Moiese only bolster the region’s majestic reputation. There’s no shortage of ways to soak up all this grandeur, either. For starters, you’ll see plenty just through your car windows, or, to shake the distraction of driving, the Whether you snowmobile or skinny-ski, eat sushi or bison burgers, swill microbrews or local wines, Glacier Country tends to feel like the Montana you’ve always imagined: often homegrown, occasionally cosmopolitan and always beautiful. October 2014 Fall Into Montana Page 7 Russell Country When it comes to north-central Montana, the question is, how far back in time would you like to go? To 1960s kitsch at the Sip n’ Dip in Great Falls, a tiki bar with live performing mermaids? To Rockwellian winters, schussing the time-honored slopes of Montana’s oldest ski area? Or back to painter Charlie Russell’s frontier West, viewed from the windows of a dinner train? Here, you’ll experience Fort Benton’s days as a fur-trading outpost; Lewis and Clark’s 1805–06 Montana expedition; and Bear Paw Battlefield, where Chief Joseph resigned to “fight no more forever.” This land of sunny wheat fields, snowy plains and rolling mountains can take you back to a time before human civilization, too, like Choteau’s Cretaceous days as a hip dinosaur hangout. Or go back farther still, to geologic time, when limestone rock formations slowly emerged along the Upper Missouri National Wild and Scenic River, and the entire Rocky Mountain Front lifted into existence. While Russell Country is home to 21st-century trappings like Montana’s largest wind farm, even everyday interactions here are tinged with a sort of oldfashioned charm. Chatting with the guy at the next ice-fishing hole, swapping field notes with fellow birders and running into skinny-skiers on the trails, you’ll find folks warmly welcoming and unpretentious, much like the hotels, cafes, saloons and museums. In such a laidback, unbustling place, it’s easy to feel like you have all the time in the world...maybe because you do. Fall is decidedly hunting season in these parts and fly fishers happily fish on through the winter (and every other season). Hikers and mountain bikers can start exploring as soon as the snow melts in spring, on through the summer and into fall, when the weather is cool enough to keep sweatiness at bay. In the winter, cross-country skis and snowshoes turn the scenery into your playground, and if you want to get in some downhill turns, head to Red Lodge Mountain Resort, just an hour southwest of Billings. HOW TO GET HERE I-94 constitutes the main pipeline, with I-90, MT 59, US 12 and 212 branching off. Logan International Airport in Billings has direct flights from eight major U.S. cities. There are also regional flights into Miles City and Glendive. Once you are here, remember to give horseback riders on the road plenty of clearance, and drive around them very slowly. If you encounter a cattle drive crossing the road, wait for signals from the cattlemen that it’s safe to move through. WHAT TO PACK If you’re heading to a cattle drive or working ranch, absolutely bring your cowboy boots! You’ll soon discover just how functional they really are. For general trompingabout, you’ll want a good pair of tennis shoes or hiking boots and a few layers, especially a wind-resistant one. In the winter, gloves, hat, a warm parka and snow boots will most likely come in handy. Dress is casual here, and you’d be hard-pressed to tell a ranching baron from a farmhand on clothes alone. Blue jeans, sweatshirts and ball caps are the norm. PHOTOGRAPHING NATIVE AMERICAN CEREMONIES Powwows and dances have deep religious significance and typically do not allow flash photography. Be sure to have asked permission before snapping photos at Native American ceremonies. Madison Buffalo Jump State Park Situated on the edge of a broad valley carved by the Madison River, this high limestone cliff was used for 2,000 years (as recent as 200 years ago) by Native Americans. It enabled them to stampede herds of bison in vast numbers off this massive semicircular cliff, utilizing them for food, clothing, shelter and provisions. The 'runners' were highly skilled young men trained for speed and endurance and wearing buffalo, antelope or wolf skins, lured the bison to the 'pishkun' or cliff. This was their only means for survival. Although the introduction of horses led to the abandonment of this jump sometime after 1700, the rugged outcropping now serves as an inspiring monument to the region's early inhabitants. The park encloses all the main geographical features of a jump site and several formations remain to provide visitors with a glimpse of the cultures, which utilized this method of hunting. Tons of bones still lie buried at the cliff's base, while archaeologists have located the tepee rings of an extensive vil- lage. With a little imagination it is easy to visualize the awesome events which occurred here during a drive, the thunderous roar of the stampede, the dramatic sight of the fall, and the frenzy of activity which followed.
