Story Slams continue LVA brings night of entertaining food to Behihana
Sunday
SPECIAL TO PARADISE
eople might say that
with all the colorful
and creative costumes, the Benihana
Celebrity Chef Cook Off
is like a community masquerade party with an
altruistic purpose, or, an
early Fantasy Fest -- with
cooking combined.
Last year zombies went
slumming in geisha girl
territory as Hawaiian hula
dancers rubbed elbows
with attorneys wearing
fuzzy, kitty-cat ears beside
unkempt, furry faces (The
“Duck Dynasty” Table). It’s
always a beautiful sight
(albeit comical) as our
Keys community gathers to
cook, connect, and enjoy
great food for a good cause.
They’ll be doing it
again Wednesday at the
Benihana Celebrity Chef
Cook Off to benefit Literacy
Volunteers of America
(LVA) – Monroe County,
Inc.
“This event is especially
important for Literacy
Volunteers,” says LVA
President and Chief
Volunteer, The Honorable
Peary S. Fowler, a local
judge. “Our programs are
short staffed, and student
waiting lists forever growing. We needs increased
resources to support program expansion and attract
new volunteers. This events
helps us do both.”
Owner Mark Hyatt is
certainly doing his part. For
the sixth consecutive year,

his five star restaurant over

where normal people
step before a microphone and tell a true story
from their lives based on
a theme of the night, will
continue at 8 p.m. Sunday
at the Little Room Jazz
Club, 821 Duval St. in Key
West. The stories begin at
8 p.m. and the mic is open
to anyone wanting to tell a
story. Storytellers can sign
up anytime after 7 p.m.
The theme is “Only In
Key West.”
Each storyteller will have
five minutes and can tell
their story any way they
choose. The story just has
to be true, and have happened to them.
“There’s nothing else
like it in Key West,”
said Bob Bowersox, the
founder of TheatreXP in
Key West, who produces
the Story Slams. “An eve-

ning of great storytelling
by real people just like
you telling remarkable,
hilarious, heartrending, thought-provoking
true stories based on a
theme.”
The audience votes for
their favorite stories of the
night, with three winners
sharing $200 in cash prizes,
an invitation to the Grand
Slam next year, and storyteller bragging rights.
Bowersox said there are
some guidelines for participants: No rants or essays,
no political statements, no
social attacks. And it’s not
for comedy routines either.
A $10 donation is
requested at the door. For

up early, call TheatreXP

How it works: Each
celebrity chef is asked to

Guests can be family and
friends, favorite clients,

also use the opportunity
to celebrate a special occasion. Typically guests come
in costume and each table

basic reading and writing skills or who need to

years, LVA has helped 5,276
students achieve personal

literacy skills. Student
goals include improving

improving workplace

character in “The Judge.”
While Bob Sr. introduced
the boy to acting, he also
introduced him to marijuana. “When my dad and
I would do drugs together,”
he says, “it was like him
trying to express his love
for me in the only way he
knew how.”
His father recalls, “I’d have
a little grass or take a little
coke to stay up and write
and my son would come
down in his little pajamas
and sit and he’d say ‘If you
can do it, why can’t I do it?’
And I’d say ‘That’s a good
question, but why would
you want to do it?’ And he’d
say ‘Because I don’t want to
go to bed either’.”
It was a different time.
“What a schmuck I was,”
his father says today. “If I
had it to do all over again, I
probably wouldn’t be doing
it myself, let alone allowing
him to do it.”
As a result, Robert Jr. was
a Santa Monica High School
dropout whose own drug
problems are legendary.
It made him the perfect
choice to play Marvel’s substance-abusing billionaire
Tony Stark, AKA Iron Man.
He has one more film left
on his Marvel contract,
then he plans to work
mainly with Team Downey.
The unforgiving son in
“The Judge” is unlike the
real Robert Downey Jr. “If
my father were less of a pioneer,” he says, “he probably
would have been more of a
father, but I wouldn’t be who
I was. I think it’s valiant to
make mistakes so your children don’t have to.”
But sometimes they do
anyway.
Robert Downey Jr. is
aware how lucky he is. In
Tinseltown, where you only
get one chance for success,
he’s had two or three. And
he doesn’t intend to blow it
this time around.
So these days he’s playing
a very different role than
his father’s son.

Top 10 Robert Downey Jr. Movies
Robert Downey Jr.’s new
movie “The Judge” induced
us to look back over the filmography of this talented but
oft troubled star. The 80 films
that span his nearly 45-year
career prove he’s a great actor,
drugged or sober. Nonetheless,
we’ve picked our Top 10 favorites:
10.) “Home for the
Holidays” (1995) — This cautionary Thanksgiving tale gives
us Downey as Holly Hunter’s
fickle gay brother. A sometimes
overlooked gem about the
anxieties that accompany family
reunions.
9.) “Kiss Kiss Bang Bang”
(2005) and “The Singing
Detective” (2003) — In this
tongue-in-cheek take on the
hardboiled private eye genre, a
would-be actor and a consulting detective (Downey and Val
Kilmer) find themselves in the
middle of a murder case. Then,
playing a bedridden writer who
reworks his stories in his head,
Downey takes us on a fantasy
trip.
8.) “A Scanner Darkly”
(2005) — Richard Linklater
based this animated sci-fi
anti-drug film on a Philip K.
Dick novel. Who better to star
in it than weed-smoking Woody
Harrelson and coke-snorting
Robert Downey Jr.? And Keanu
Reeves is the undercover cop
out to stop them.
7.) “Sherlock Holmes”
(2009) and “Sherlock Holmes:
Game of Shadows” (2011)
— Who would have thought to
cast Downey as the ultimate
British detective? Director Guy
Ritchie, that’s who. And surprisingly, it worked.
6.) “Natural Born Killers”
(1994) and “Zodiac” (2007)
— Oliver Stone’s crime drama
was pretty close to home for
star Woody Harrelson, son of a
convicted murderer. But Downey
as the fatalistic newspaperman
stands out amid the bloody
rampage. And as a journalist
tracking San Francisco’s Zodiac
killer, he offers another take on
crime reporting.
5.) “Good Night, and Good
Luck” (2005) — In George
Clooney’s fine film about
television newsman Edward
R. Murrow and his CBS team,
Downey steps into the shoes of
reporter Joseph Wershba without missing a step.
4.) “Tropic Thunder” (2008)
— Perhaps Downey’s most
daring role, as an egotistic
actor who dons blackface
for a botched-up film set in
Southeast Asia. Yes, he pulls
off what could have been a
disaster. In fact, he even got an
Oscar nod.
3.) “Chaplin” (1992)
— In this biopic by Richard
Attenborough, the Little Tramp
is seen in flashbacks, unfolding
Chaplin’s triumphant cinematic
career. Downey was nominated
for an Oscar for his title role.
2.) “Less Than Zero”
(1987) — Call it typecasting,
but this downer story about a
cocaine-sniffing college boy displays some of Downey’s most
sensitive acting.
1.) “Iron Man” (2008),
“Iron Man 2” (2011), “Iron
Man 3” (2013), and “Marvel’s
The Avengers” (2012) — The
role Downey was born to play,
the substance-abuser billionaire
industrialist whose alter ego
is a superhero known as Iron
Man. Among the best of the
Marvel blockbusters, these are
Downey’s most successful films.
Okay, we cheated by combining some movies featuring the
same (or similar) character. And
for lack of room on the list we
left off Robert Altman’s “Short
Cuts,” that wonky comedy “Due
Date” with Zach Galifianakis,
and “Wonder Boys” based on
the novel by Pulitzer Prize-winner Michael Chabon.
But why quibble. Robert
Downey Jr. raises the bar on
any movie he’s in.

Harrison Gallery presents artist Cindy Kulp
The Harrison Gallery, 825 White St. presents new works by
Cindy Kulp.
The opening reception will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Oct. 16.
Until now, Cindy Kulp has been best known for her exquisite
birds, but her latest creations have brought her in a new direction.
The work portrays a dreamy world where each painting carefully
explores an elaborate connected narrative. These new works are
the first installment of a two part series entitled “Reckoning.”
OUR MAN IN
The Harrison Gallery will show part one during October’s Walk
on White.
The gallery will also be showing select works by Sally Binard,
who strives to capture otherworldly moments in her work, evoking sensory responses from her life that would be otherwise verbally unrelatable. Equally influenced by Belgium and Haitian
heritage, Binard’s work presents itself in a uniquely visceral language.
