CLOSE AIR SUPPORT CONFERENCE 2014
OVERVIEW
The Conference
The Close Air Support Conference will be held on the 18th & 19th
November 2014 at The Old Royal Naval College in London. The aim
of the Close Air Support Conference is to provide an opportunity
for military, government and industry personnel involved with
Close Air Support and Close Air Support programmes to share
programme updates, future requirements, new technologies and
Lessons Identified relating to Close Air Support and contemporary
operations.
The Close Air Support Conference will be attended by
requirements and acquisition officials from the Land and Air
Systems divisions on national procurement bodies, as well as
senior military Officers from nations across the world. Also present
will be the senior management of the leading industry contractors
providing relevant technologies.
Event Format
The conference will be held at The Old Royal Naval College, London. The College is conveniently located in Greenwich, London and is easily
reached from London airports and rail stations. The conference will follow the format of previous conferences namely 2 days of presentations
looking at contemporary national CAS programmes. The presentations are interspersed with generous breaks to allow private discussion,
networking and viewing of the exhibition area. A lunch will be provided each day as well as refreshments during breaks.
2014 Conference Overview
With military operations in Afghanistan due to end very shortly the focus now is embedding the hard won lessons and a return to contingency
operations. This must be done against a background of financial restraint that will put training and equipment programmes under pressure.
CAS 2014 will feature presentations from various nations that focus on the preparation, training, equipment and joint fires support provided
to the JTAC/JFO/TACP for the dismounted fight. Topics to be covered include:


Mr Ryan Roche, Business Development, Fidelity Technologies Inc
For almost two decades, Fidelity Technologies has pioneered the implementation of
air to ground integrated training through various generations of simulation and
training enhancements systems. Through a dedicated relationship with the endusers and a focus on the applications of missions skills training, Fidelity has

15:10 – Tea/Coffee
15:40 – Providing Virtual Close Air Support to Brigade All Arms Exercises
Using Live, Virtual and Constructive Simulation Systems
10:15 – Joint Close Air Support Training – Future development
Mr Bob Landry, Joint Staff J-6, Joint Fires Division (JFD), Joint Close Air
Support (JCAS) Section
The Joint Staff J6, Joint Close Air Support (JCAS) Section assist the Joint Fire
Support (JFS) Executive Steering Committee (ESC) to identify shortfalls across
the JCAS mission area, analyze potential materiel and non-materiel solutions,
and make recommendations to the Services, Combatant Commands, and DoD
agencies to fix or mitigate those shortfalls. In recent years Joint & Coalition
Forces have greatly increased the number of trained JTAC’s within deployed
formations. This has created significant pressure on training resources for both
initial and continuation training. This pressure is exacerbated by a simultaneous
reduction in the number of CAS aircraft and the number of flying hours
available for training. The presentation will focus on current efforts to increase
the use of accredited simulation to mitigate pressure on Close Air Support
training resources and produce combat ready JTAC’s with compliant training
standards.
Major Craig Turner, SO2 Simulation, Land Simulation Centre, Forces
Command, Australian Army
The training of Joint Terminal Attack Controllers and pilots in close air support
(CAS) is addressed by a number of technical and procedural training methods.
However the integration of CAS into larger scale training exercises often involves
the use of live air, at cost and risk, or by the use of notional or umpire generated
close air support.
The use of Live Instrumented Systems (LIS), Virtual and Constructive simulations
provides the opportunity to deliver close air support to live troops on the ground
using pilots in a virtual and constructive environment. Effects can be generated
both in the simulation, and live on the ground using instrumented effects systems
and LIS feedback. This paper will discuss the Australian Army’s recent experience
in using simulation systems integrated to live forces to enable virtual Close Air
Support to a major foundation war fighting exercise.
16:20 – Saab Training Systems

Air Support Operations
Development of the Air National Guard Advance JTAC Training
System (AAJTS)
Delivery to operational training squadrons
Training plan modification to accommodate a high fidelity simulator
Air Force Instruction and JTAC MOA rewrites to adjust for advances in
simulator technology
In recent years operational experience has necessitated a substantial increase in
the number of trained JTAC’s within Brigade & Battlegroup orbats. Training &
sustaining an increased number of combat ready JTAC’s has placed significant
strain on training resources within the military. Recent defence cuts and
reorganization have resulted in a smaller fleet of fighters capable of supporting
close air support training compounding the problem further. Novel solutions and a
new approach are required to ensure that a future force structure of trained,
combat ready JTAC’s can be sustained.
The panel discussion will be led by the conference chairman, Lt Col Andrew Tate,
and will address contemporary challenges and possible solutions as follows:



Increased use of simulation for initial and sustainment training
The use of contract air services for live training
Possible updates to MOA & STANAG
