The Lectionary is Changing
To be honest the headline above is a bit
misleading. The Lectionary is not
changing, we are changing lectionaries.
For many years now our church has
followed the New Revised Common
Lectionary (NRCL). Sometimes we
assume that the NRCL has been around
forever and that every preacher around
the world surely follows it. Neither is true.
The NRCL was solidified in the early 1990’s
and was preceded by a number of other
lectionaries many of which trace their
history back to the 1969 Ordo Lectionum
Missae, developed by the Roman
Catholic Church. Lectionaries of various
forms have been in use for centuries, but
they have always been evolving. That
process continues. The Narrative
Lectionary (NL) is one such development
and has some compelling attributes.
The NL is a four year cycle of readings.
The NRCL was a three year cycle. Part of
the reason for this change to 4 years is
that the NL is a 9 month lectionary. The
Narrative Lectionary was designed by the
faculty of Luther Seminary and is
designed to walk congregations
chronologically through scripture during
the time when attendance is most
regular. Essentially, the NL begins in
September and continues through
Pentecost Sunday in the spring. During
the summer months, I will be doing
sermon series on particular books of the
Bible or on various themes. The goal of
the NL is to highlight the overarching
movement of scripture, a movement that
is always pointing to the work of God
accomplished in Christ. The NL also
recognizes that people are not nearly as
familiar with the Bible as they once were.
September /October 2014
We are accustomed to hearing short
snippets from the Bible and we are not
always aware of the context. Because
the NL readings are longer that context is
better represented. If you just lost
interest at the word “longer;” don’t worry,
there is only one reading per week.
After 22 years of doing the same thing,
perhaps we are due for a change. This is
a bit of an experiment, but I am hopeful
that this change will breathe some new
excitement into my work as a preacher
and subsequently into the life of our local
church. If you would like to learn more
about the Narrative lectionary, you can
visit the following

EDUCATION
Holly Guyotte –
Coordinator
Yeah! It’s getting to be the time when all
the children return from summer; ready
for some new and exciting fun and
learning in the Sunday School wing!! I
can’t wait to hear all the stories of the
adventures they had during the summer.
We have a new face in the nursery this
year, we are happy to welcome Stacy
Shaffer to our team; she has been
working with a few of our “regular”
nursery volunteers throughout the summer
and has settled in nicely. Please stop by
to say hello, introduce yourself and
welcome her on board.
Sunday, September 14th is Registration
Sunday beginning at 9am in the chapel;
all families with children are encouraged
to attend. Following registration children
will join their families in worship; Pastor
Chad will send us out when it is time so
we can have some time for fun and
games.
We are very excited to be using the
“Sparks” Curriculum again this year for a
month by month theme. It is a rotational
series for our pre K – 5th grade students.
The Jr. High group will also be using the
Sparks program specifically created for Jr.
High students. Many exciting things

weeks). During these three weeks, you
will give a similar lesson to three different
groups of students. There will also be
opportunities to be on a decorating crew
as we move from theme to theme, to be
a leader in our opening chapel time, or to
be a substitute teacher to fill in when we
know someone will be out.
There are sign-up sheets in the connector
on the wall. I am excited we already
have a few volunteers already signed
up… Thank you!! Still many slots to fill, 3
Sundays for the year is all we are asking…
and you won’t be alone, we are asking
for two volunteers for each group.
Without the support and participation
from adults our children won’t receive the
most benefits from the program, come
out and share your love with the young
people of our congregation!!

What does “living healthy” mean to you?
Erin Callaway, Healthy Community project
coordinator for the “Feel Good
Piscataquis!” initiative wants to know.
Being “healthy” isn’t just about what you
eat and whether you exercise. Attending
community gatherings, living in a secure
home with affordable heat and running
water, and knowing how to get the
supportive services you might need are
examples of “social factors” that contribute
to healthy living.
“Feel Good Piscataquis!” is a joint effort
being led by the Piscataquis Regional
YMCA and the Charlotte White Center to
help people in Piscataquis County live
healthier lives. The goal is to first learn what
people in Piscataquis are most concerned
about when it comes to health. The next
step is to help folks and organizations work
together to come up with projects to
address the concerns that are most
common.
Community involvement is key. That’s why
Erin would like to visit members of the
church. During the next few months, Erin
hopes to attend groups like the Senior
Lunch and Women’s Fellowship to talk
about healthy living. She is also working
with Youth Lay Minister Deb Boyd to involve
the church’s kids and teens.
For more information about “Feel Good
Piscataquis” send e-mail to Erin at
[email protected] or call her at 3430171. If you use Facebook, you can also
find information on the “Feel Good

MISSION OPPORTUNITIES
“Back-to-School” is
screaming from all sorts of
advertisements this time of
year. It can be a good
reminder for us that now
would be a great time to purchase items
for the school kits we will be preparing in
the spring!
Into each colorful cloth bag, we will be
packing the following items:
*3- 70 count spiral notebooks totaling 200210 pages
*1- pair round-tip metal scissors
*1- 30-centimeter ruler (12”)
*1- hand-held pencil sharpener
*1- large eraser
*6- new pencils with erasers
*1- box 24 crayons
Some of our mission-minded shoppers
have already found the bargains.
However, more items are still
needed, in particular scissors, crayons,
pencils, and pencil sharpeners. Imagine
the smiles on the children's faces when
they open the bags we have filled!!
FEATURED MONTHLY MISSIONS
September Featured Mission - Neighbors
in Need (NIN), is a special offering of the

grants are awarded to churches and
organizations doing justice work in their
communities. These grants fund projects
whose work ranges from direct service to
community organizing and advocacy to
address systemic injustice.
October Featured Mission - The Spruce
Run Womancare Alliance's mission is to
provide support and advocacy to
persons who are affected by domestic

Dear Church Family,
Thank you so much for the care package
you sent during finals week. It was greatly
appreciated. Now that I am no longer
living in the dorms your treats lasted long
enough to get through an intensive
Chemistry course I took during May Term.
With God’s guidance and t help of
several tutors I survived! I don’t normally
share my actual course grades but I
received an A- for my efforts! Thank you
again for your love, prayers and care
packages.
Blessed By You All,

Dear Church Family,
Thank you for the cards of sympathy you
have sent over the last few weeks to me
and my family. We will surely miss Martha,
but I know she lives on in my memories
and eternally with our Father in Heaven. I
find great peace knowing this.
At this time, I would also like to thank the
congregation and the scholarship
committee for awarding me scholarship
funds to continue my education. You will
be happy to know I made the Dean’s List
this past semester. Thank you again for
your love, prayers, thoughtful cards, and
gift of scholarship.

Dear Church Family,

Dear Church Family,
Thank you for the continued support of
my studies in veterinary medicine as I
near the end of my 7 years of college
studying. Your continued love and
support have aided me in fulfilling dreams
of becoming a veterinarian. The life
lessons and continued growth into my
faith have helped to mold me into the
honest and responsible person I am
required to be within my field. Thank you
again for all of your support over the
many years.

Dear Friends,
Thank you so much for the gorgeous
hanging basket and very generous gift
certificate to Center Theater. I am such a
plant person and have this one on my
porch at home. I also love Center
Theater and go to all the plays and
concerts my back allows. Your
thoughtfulness means a great deal to me.
And so did having Nursery every Sunday.
I can still tear up when I think about what
I had to give up. I truly loved that
responsibility and those darling “little
ones”. Still hope I can help once in a
while. Thank you again.

Dear Church Family,
Thank you so much for the finals care

Dear Church Family,
After a few hectic weeks packing and

be used at the Sunday
socials held for their
residents. If you are
looking for a mission
opportunity, this once a
month baking opportunity might just fill
the bill. Please sign up on the sheet on
the table in the connector if you can add
a tasty bit to this gathering of Hibbard's
residents. Thank you.

the church office. A signup sheet is
located in the connector.
FREE COMMUNITY DINNER
the 2nd Monday of each
month at 5:00 p.m. in the
Chapel.
Beginning Monday,
October 13th the church
will be holding a Free Community Dinner
available to anyone in our community.
The meals will be simple, but hearty fare.
Each meal will come with a recipe card
so individuals can learn how to make the
meal at home. We need volunteers to
help with the prep, cooking, serving, and
clean up of the meals. All food will be
prepped and cooked in the church
kitchen. A sign up sheet is located in the
connector if you can help in any way
with this new project.

Church Garden History
The Church Garden was established in May 1990. It was designed by Phil Holmes,
built by Jim and Duane LaCasce, planted and cared for by Jeanene LaCasce and Jean
Holmes.
Plants were taken from the LaCasce’s home garden or started from seed. Many
other church members contributed plants. Over the years additional items and plants
have been added in memory of loved ones.
The rose bush was given in memory of Wanda Wiley by her husband, Cliff Wiley.
The bird bath was given by Dan Steinke and family in memory of Dan’s father.
The cross was given in memory of Dagmar and Rev. Paul Malicote by family and
friends. Heather Elowe was instrumental in collecting money from church members to
help pay for the cross.
The Euphorbia Plant was given in memory of Ella Smith by her daughter Eunice
Finley.
The bench was given by Jean Holmes.
The water faucet and lattice was given by Eric Annis.
It was the understanding with the Trustees there was no church money for a garden.
When and if a garden was not successful the area would be filled with crushed stone-no
grass. Everything in the garden has been donated.
Over the years, different individuals have lovingly cared for the garden. Ethel Ayres
watered the garden for years while Jean Holmes tended the plants. In past years, various
individuals who signed up on a weekly basis have watered the garden. Priscilla Higgins
and Marilyn Young were often seen on hands and knees weeding. This year, Priscilla
Higgins and Sue Stevens have tended the garden and Ethan Poland spread mulch
donated by Parker Lumber Company.
From April to October the Church Garden is a wonder to behold with its glorious flowers
reminding us of God’s bounty.
Information regarding the Church Garden was provided by Jeanene LaCasce
