RIDGEFIELD CHRISTIAN SCHOOL RCS WARRIORS FOR CHRIST T HE M E SS EN G E R OCTOBER 2014 Fall Break October 8-10 2:20 p.m. Early Dismissal on October 8 No After Care Provided WORDS FROM THE OFFICE As we usher in cooler days of fall, it’s difficult to believe that we have nearly a quarter of the school year complete. I become very excited as I walk the halls and observe how and what our students are learning. I want to acknowledge the extraordinary teaching staff we have for the creative and innovative ideas they utilize every day, the genuine care they demonstrate for their students, and their dedication to the calling and ministry of education. A few class activities include chemistry students determining the density of pennies. Art students are designing and constructing paper mache` projects with lighting. Incredibly detailed charcoal sketches of recognizable faces have been on display in the hallway. Little voices belonging to PK4 students are singing and learning to play handbells. Older students are harmonizing and preparing holiday music for Christmas on the Ridge. English students have created and presented items from time capsules depicting stories they have read. Others have designed board games and played them to reinforce learning. Fourth graders have collected and displayed bug collections. While history came alive for third graders who traveled to Parker Homestead, they were also able to reinforce math concepts of measurement in a fun project of making cornbread with the meal they brought home from their outing. This is merely a small sampling of learning activities I’m privileged to observe on a daily basis. We also have students with outstanding sponsors and advisers who collect food for those in need. Students rapidly slap the buzzer to answer questions preparing for quiz bowl. Committed students are rehearsing, playing, and singing in the first RCS praise band leading worship at chapel. Again, we are blessed. As you have opportunity, join with me in acknowledging our entire staff for the tremendous job they do every day. Grandparents/Grandfriends Day was very successful once again. We want to thank all those who came for lunch and shared in the day. We’re looking forward to another school-wide event where we hope to see all our present RCS family as well as our alumni when we host Green/Gold Night on October 17th. Get ready for our Fun Run Days—Color Run for our kiddos and Chocolate 5K Walk/Run for the adults in our school and community. We hope that everyone has discovered the many advantages of Renweb and the smart phone app which enhances quick information when you may be on the run. Please see our Renweb Updates within this issue. I hope each one enjoys Fall Break and is ready for the next five weeks leading into Thanksgiving. Marcia Elder, Administrator THE MESSENGER PRE-K 3 We're learning so much in Bible! We're learning that God loves us and obedience is important. This month we learned how God protected baby Moses and that He had a great plan for him when he grew up - to lead His people out of Egypt. We also learned about Joshua and Jericho. Who would have thought it was possible to win a battle without any weapons and without even a fight? Nothing is impossible with God! PRE-K 4 We have so much fun using manipulatives to help us with our fine motor skills! Learning and playing often go hand-in-hand in Pre-K!! KINDERGARTEN As the weather gets cooler, remember that you can order First grade scientists are jackets and long busyuniform at work discovering the properties of pop- shirts from sleeved corn. Science is fun!!! http://www.toggerykids.com and they usually waive shipping charge if you have the items shipped to RCS. FIRST GRADE Kindergarten students LOVE Science! We are modeling some of our Science tools (apron, protective gloves, magnifying glasses) that we are learning about. We have also been learning about community helpers and we are beginning to read words! We think that learning is fun!! First grade scientific investigators learning about the parts of a plant. THIRD GRADE SECOND GRADE FOURTH GRADE Fourth graders planting flowers at the greenhouse! Third graders enjoyed visiting a one room schoolhouse and playing on the see-saws at Parker Homestead. We learned so much about life 100 years ago. We all decided we are happy this is 2014! FIFTH GRADE Second graders have tried several projects involving reading and following directions which include making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, folding a paper puppy, and making polar bear ice cream. We have also written recipes and "How To" papers this week in English. Fifth graders examined goldenrod plants growing behind RCS building. DARE class is under way and fifth graders are enjoying Corporal Foust weekly visits. They are learning about peer pressures and about making wise decisions. Flu Shots/Mists will be given at RCS on October 29, 2014. Paperwork will go home the week of October 13. Please return completed forms to the office ASAP. JUNIOR HIGH ENGLISH SIXTH GRADE Sixth grade students collaborate to design posters for their science experiment. Seventh graders create posters about the kinds of sentences. Eighth graders act out scenes from Prince Caspian. Ninth graders sing original songs they created about The Hobbit. Senior Emily Walton has been named an Optimist Club Outstanding Senior. The criteria for this award are that the student represents the qualities of good citizenship in their community, school and participate in extracurricular activities. Emily will be recognized at the annual Optimist Club Outstanding Senior banquet on November 3. RCS Senior Heath Shatzer recently earned the rank of Eagle Scout. Congratulations Heath! The Ridgefield Christian School Interact Service Club held a special “orange” TAG day in recognition of September as Hunger Awareness Month. Instead of $1, the students were asked to bring a canned food item to support the NEA Foodbank. 308 food items were collected and delivered to the NEA Foodbank. Interact Club sponsor is Mrs. Michelle Long. LOVE HIGH SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS Update from the Art Department Art 2, 3, & 4 have completed a large scale Paper Mache Wall Relief project. They've been working nearly four weeks to complete these. The project is a form of sculpture that is designed to be hollowed out so that it will be light weight and suitable for a light to be put inside. Art 1 has been working with different materials and learning about the color wheel and color formulas. They have finished the 4 block project which used oil pastels, chalk pastels, crayons, and colored pencils. They also learned how to reproduce an image by using the transfer method. The next project will be using perspective and learning how to draw with a vanishing point. 8th Grade Art is working on Grid Self Portraits. This project reviews how to read the measurements on a ruler, how to efficiently make a grid, and use a grid. This process has also taught them some helpful tricks such as using the battleship and window methods. Elementary Art grades 1 & 2 have been learning how colors mix on the color wheel. 1st grade was introduced to the word "abstract" and they made their own abstract drawing and colored it in class. Grades 3-6 have been working with 3D shapes and learning how to draw them in both transparent and solid form. They will begin working with grids and color wheels this month. Ninth grader, Lauren Imrie, recently competed in the Girls State Golf Tournament in Hot Springs. Lauren is the first female golfer from RCS to participate at the State Tournament. WORDS FROM THE RCS BOARD OF DIRECTORS: The school year has begun with the exciting news that the 2014 senior class attained a 23.1 average score on the ACT examination. We, as the Board of Directors, are so appreciative of the commitment and hard work by the RCS teachers, administration and staff, for preparing our students for their future with a Christian Worldview. Our fall sports have begun with our men's golf team qualifying for the state tournament and Lauren Imrie qualifying as a ladies singles player as well as a qualifier for the state tennis tournament. The Board is now accepting applications from those interested in serving. This will expand the Board for the remaining portion of the year with three existing members’ terms coming to a six year close in May. Additionally, the Board is seeking (1) an arrangement with the bond holders to temporarily modify the interest rate on the bonds and (2) a temporary suspension of the principle payments. Our hopes are that, if provided, this would assist with the financial structure of RCS. Thank you RCS families for your prayers and support of our school and students. Our Lord has blessed RCS and enabled it to be a light in our community. May your family enjoy a most blessed fall break. UPDATE We have made great progress with Renweb, our new school management software! We are learning something new and better about Renweb every day! Hopefully you have set up your Parentsweb account and are using the many features of the program. Remember, this is your tool to view your student’s attendance and daily grades, as well as teachers’ lesson plans and homework. As of October 1, you can view your students tuition, lunch and aftercare balances as well. Also, be sure to get the Renweb Home App on the App Store. It costs $4.99 and provides all of your student’s information to your Smartphone. Please call the office if you have any problems getting connected. We will keep you updated as we add more and more to this great tool!!! “Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked.
