Welcome
Welcome to the 9th Annual Gibbs Farms Bull and Replacement Female Sale. We at Gibbs
Farms cannot begin to express how thankful we are that you chose to spend your valuable
time and treasure, shopping with us for your seedstock needs. Relationships developed with
our customers is one of our most valued assets, and we look forwarding to cultivating the
ones we have, as well as planting the seeds to establish new ones to carry us forward.
This year’s sale week and all the events that lead up to and make it up, remain basically
the same as they have been from day one. We hope this consistency helps our customers
feel comfortable, at home and maybe even a little part of the family. As in the past, there will
be two powerhouse bulls on display at the Sunbelt Expo, an open house event on Saturday
October 25th, and an open invitation to stop in at any time to take advantage of our hospitality
and to check out our year’s work. We have however added one new service this year, a
very good video representation of all portions of our sale offering. We hope this gives our
customers just one more tool to evaluate, prepare and acquire their breeding needs. That
being said, while the sale events remain the same, we honestly feel that this sale offering
will be a cut above any other Gibbs Farms crop to date. Please evaluate and give us your
opinion. We strive to learn and improve.
Please pardon if you notice a bit of a heavy heart at times this year. At the time of this
writing, we are 2 days removed from the home going of the Patriarch of this close knit family.
Dewey E. Gibbs, otherwise known as Paw, has moved on to Bigger and Better things with “his
and our” Savior, Jesus Christ. At the age of 95, he leaves behind 3 children, 7 grandchildren,
19 great grandchildren, 2 great great grandsons, and a bunch of heavy hearts. The last 3
pictured editions, he enjoyed within the last 6 months. We’ll always remember a couple of his
last fun remarks, “Give me that boy”, and “How many does that make me now.” Rest assured
that the attributes that made him so well liked and successful in life, will continue to be lived
and strived for here at Gibbs Farms. Because we were so blessed to have him for so long,
we have had a tremendous example, and now a huge obligation to continue his legacy. His
strong work ethic, his quiet determination, his huge caring heart, and his willingness to help,
will always be remembered and followed in everything we do.
We at Gibbs Farms, hope that after evaluating this sale offering and the outlook for our
beloved industry, that you become as excited as we are. Please be sure to look us up Sale
Day, Open House, or anytime you’d like to visit.

Producer Co-Op Marketing
Panel Presentation & Discussion
Last year our customer educational program was focused on the advantages of cross-breeding and improved feeder calf marketing. It
was discussed the economic values of cross-breeding and then the tools available for marketing in semi-load lots. That was great for
the producer large enough to market calves in semi-loads (48,000 lbs.) but that does not fit the needs of many Gibbs Farms customers.
Many of our customers are too small to effectively put together full loads of calves, so load lot marketing cannot be achieved. We also
have some customers who have overcome this obstacle by successfully joining and/or establishing co-op groups for marketing their
calves. Our educational program this year will consist of a panel of producers who are successfully involved in a coop group or board
sale group. They will discuss how their group has successfully established and functioned to add value to their calves, then we will
open it up for questions, answers, and general discussion. We will then break for a great down home style cookout with the Gibbs
Farms family and further discuss throughout the night. Please join us!

unload a large trailer or if you are not available to receive your animals when our trailer is
delivering in your area, you will need to make arrangements to pick up your animals at your

Sale Terms
Herd Health... Every sale animal and the entire Gibbs Farms breeding herd is
properly vaccinated and boostered annually for 7-Way Clostridium, IBR-BVD-BRSVPI3, Hamophilus Somnus, Pasturella, Leptospirosis, and Vibriosis. All heifers are
calfhood vaccinated for Brucellosis and every calf born on the farm each year is
tested for BVD-PI. All animals on the farm are treated at least twice annually with
a parasitic pour-on and at least once annually with Safe-Guard drench. All bulls
have successfully passed a complete breeding soundness exam.
Guarantee on the Sale Females... Every open heifer selling is guaranteed to be
open at the time of the sale and guaranteed to be a satisfactory breeder provided
they are managed for proper and acceptable nutritional and physical health. In
the event a heifer proves to be a non-breeder, the customer must contact a Gibbs
Farms representative on or before May 15, 2015 to make a claim. A veterinarian’s
statement will be required and Gibbs Farms reserves the right to have the heifer
returned if deemed necessary. The customer will be given a full credit (minus
salvage value of the original heifer) to be used in a future Gibbs Farms Sale. Every
bred female is guaranteed to be bred on sale day as stated in the sale catalog or as
updated from the auctioneer at the time of the sale. In the event any bred female
is found to not be bred as sold, the customer needs to contact a Gibbs Farms
representative immediately and no later than May 15, 2014. The customer will be
given a satisfactory credit on a future Gibbs Farms Sale.
Genetic Conditions . . . All bulls selling are free of all genetic conditions
monitored for and tested by the American Simmental Association at the time
of the sale. All females are also assumed free of all genetic conditions unless
otherwise noted in the sale catalog or advised differently at the sale. Gibbs Farms
uses the American Simmental Association TraitTrac to monitor genetic conditions
and GENESEEK for DNA testing.

interest in each bull selling. On every bull, you are purchasing full possession, full
salvage value, full decision making, and 2/3 semen revenue interest. The Gibbs
Farms retained interest only comes into play if semen is marketed on a bull.
Guarantee on the Sale Bulls... Every bull selling is guaranteed to be sound on
sale day to the best of our knowledge and has successfully passed a complete
breeding soundness exam performed by Dr. Phillip Wilson within 60 days of sale
time.
Full Purchase Value Extended Warranty on the Sale Bulls... Every bull selling
carries a 100% guarantee extended warranty for one breeding season, provided
the bull is managed for proper and acceptable nutritional and physical health, not
to exceed six months beyond sale day. In the event a customer has any problem
with a bull (health, injury, or death) prior to or during the bulls first breeding
season, prior to May 15, 2015, the customer should immediately contact a Gibbs
Farms representative to report a claim. A veterinarian’s statement of the problem
will be required and Gibbs Farms reserves the right to have the bull returned if
deemed necessary. A replacement bull of mutually agreed upon quality will be
provided if Gibbs Farms has one available with delivery expense to the customer
not to exceed the Gibbs Farms Assisted Delivery amounts on regular sale day
animals. In the event a satisfactory replacement bull is not available, the customer
will be given a full credit (minus salvage value of the original bull) to be used in
a future Gibbs Farms Sale. Gibbs Farms will not be held responsible under any
circumstances for any settlement amount exceeding the purchase price of the
bull.
No one can guarantee every animal will perform perfectly,
but at Gibbs Farms we can guarantee we will make things right if they do not!

This is an example of a Superior
Livestock Country Page listing. This service
allows a producer to list their calves with
complete information and video, exactly
the same as when listed in a Superior
auction. The same huge buyer base has
access to bid on or actually click the “Buy

Some of our customers are finding they
like this approach to marketing their calves
and works especially well when marketing
replacement quality heifers.

Quick Guide to EPDs & Indexes
Expected Progeny Differences (EPDs): EPDs are the most accurate and effective tool
available for comparing genetic levels. In using EPDs, the difference between two sires’
EPDs represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny. For
example, if sires A and B have EPDs of +10 and -5, a 15-unit difference would be expected
in the progeny (moving from -5 to +10 yields 15 units.) The key to using EPDs is knowing
what units they are expressed in. For example, if the above case referred to weaning
weight EPDs, A would be expected to sire 15-pounds more weaning weight than B. If
calving ease were the trait, A would be expected to sire 15-percent more unassisted births
in first-calf heifers; in other words, if B sired 30 assists in a group of 100 heifers, we’d expect
A to require 15 assists. A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s
EPDs rank him relative to other bulls in the breed. For percentile rankings or more detailed
information about EPDs and $ indexes visit www.simmental.org. Listed below are the
units ASA EPDs are expressed in:
Calving Ease (CE): Percent of unassisted births when used on heifers.
Birth Weight (BW): Pounds of birth weight.
Weaning Weight (WW): Pounds of weaning weight.
Yearling Weight (YW): Pounds of yearling weight.
Maternal Calving Ease (MCE): Percent of unassisted births in first-calving daughters.
Milk (MM): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk.
Maternal Weaning Weight (MWW): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk & growth.
Stayability (STAY): Percent of daughters remaining in the cowherd at six years of age.
Carcass Weight (CW): Pounds of carcass weight.
Yield Grade (YG): Yield grade score.
Marbling (Marb): Marbling score.
Back Fat (BF or B Fat): Inches of back fat.
Ribeye Area (REA): Square inches of ribeye.
Warner-Bratzler Shear Force (Shear): Pounds of force required to shear a steak.
All-Purpose Index (API): Dollars per cow exposed under an all-purpose-sire scenario.
(Continue to read for more details.)
Terminal Index (Ti): Dollars per cow exposed under a terminal-sire scenario. (Continue
to read for more details.)
$ Indexes: Though EPDs allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically
important traits, then only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That’s where $ indexes
come in. Through well-conceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend
EPDs and economics to estimate an animal’s overall impact on your bottom line. The same
technology that led to develop the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics
over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes:
All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both
Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of daughters required to
maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold
grade and yield.
Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on
feed and sold grade and yield.
Using API and TI: First, determine which index to use; if you’re keeping replacements
use API, if not, TI. Then, just as with EPDs, zero in on the unit difference between bulls.
(As described above, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be
used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Or, put another way,
how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an
all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra
$6000 over a $50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr.
= $6000.) A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull’s index value
ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed. For percentile rankings or more detailed
information about EPDs and $ Indexes visit www.simmental.org.

Gibbs Farms Bull Development
This is our second year developing bulls on the daily fed total mix ration (TMR)
and we are so glad we made this management decision. By grinding our own
hay and using as the main fiber source of the ration in place of cottonseed hulls,
we have drastically cut the cost of the ration and actually made a better ration.
The ration looks a little rough in the bunk, but the bulls like it, so that’s all that
matters. The main ingredients are the ground ryegrass hay, soyhull pellets,
a peanut by-product pellet, and a little extruded cottonseed meal added to
balance the protein requirement needs. There are no cereal grains or high starch
ingredients used. By eliminating the high starch products, the animals rumen
remains in a more basic pH which is where it needs to be for high efficient use of
forages. Developing bulls in this manner eliminates the big adjustment back to
forage that is experienced by bulls that are developed using high starch cereal
grains like corn. Our bulls are developed completely corn-free, not even using a
corn by-product.
We formulate our ration at an energy level to provide for proper development and not add unwanted
fat in the bulls. We do not get caught up in the weight gain race, instead we allow the bulls to develop
in a slower, healthier manner. Solid research has proven the detrimental effects of developing breeding
bulls too fast on a high energy ration, so why do so many seedstock producers still do it? We cannot
answer that question, but advise that you strongly consider how your seedstock supplier develops his
bulls. It will greatly affect how well they work for you and for how long.

EPD PERCENTILES - WHERE DOES AN ANIMAL RANK?
Knowing where an animal’s EPD ranks within the population of any given genetic evaluation is a far more valuable and accurate prediction of
that animals true genetic predicted merit than simply knowing the numeric value of the EPD itself!
First and foremost, before you can rank or even compare animals EPDs, you must be comparing apples to apples and that’s why we use the American
Simmental Association’s Multi-Breed Genetic Evaluation. It eliminates the guesswork and necessity of conversion tables and formulas when comparing
breeds or hybrids. The accuracy of the Multi-Breed evaluation is increased greatly when all of an animals ancestors are registered in the A.S.A. herd book and
all of the progeny data from them are processed through the Multi-Breed Genetic Evaluation. This is one of the most significant things that sets Gibbs Farms
apart from almost all other SimAngus seedstock operations. All of Gibbs Farms registered Angus cows were registered with the A.S.A. as foundation Angus
cows many years ago and all of their progeny data as well as generations of SimAngus progeny data has been processed through the A.S.A. Multi-Breed
Genetic Evaluation. Our young herd sires have been progeny tested for many years through the A.S.A. Carcass Merit Program along with large numbers of
carcass data from our own steers retained through harvest with all data getting processed through the A.S.A. We have ultrasound scanned our yearling bulls
for many years and for the past seven years we have also scanned all of our yearling heifers, totaling over 450 head each year, in addition to carcass data on
50 – 75 steers annually. Data is only as accurate as you make it and at Gibbs Farms we have gone the extra mile for many generations of genetics to insure
our customers of accurate and meaningful data.
The percentile charts below are from the American Simmental Association Fall 2014 Multi-Breed Genetic Evaluation. Using these charts to plot exactly where
an animal ranks within the breed is the most accurate way of determining their true genetic merit and is far more important than the actual numeric value
given to the EPD.
