Following a serious fire at the Chevron, Richmond refinery on August 6, 2012, a report published this year by the Governor's Interagency Working Group on Refinery Safety raised concerns about the safety of the state's oil refineries. The report called for the establishment of an Interagency Refinery Task Force in order to (1) draft revisions to the state's refinery safety regulations, (2) strengthen regulatory enforcement, and (3) improve emergency preparedness and response procedures. David Lanier, Secretary of the state's Labor and Workforce Development Agency, and Christine Baker, Director of Department of Industrial Relations, have taken a leading role in responding to the report's recommendations. Dr. Wilson will discuss DIR's work in the areas of regulatory oversight, policy and enforcement in this important industrial sector.
