HMVC ‘STEERING COLUMN’ NEWSLETTER PAGE 2 BIG CROWDS LOVE BIG CAR SHOW AT ROCK ‘N’ ROLL FESTIVAL The biggest and best of America’s great cars of the rock ‘n’ roll era attracted large crowds to huge show ‘n’ shine displays creating a great atmosphere to this year’s Rock ‘n’ Roll Festival at Victor Harbor. Over the two days of the Festival, more than 270 beautifully restored and original vehicles took part featuring many popular makes as well as hotrods and modified cars. The HMVC plays a prominent role in the Festival with our own Leith Kavanagh coordinating the entries with invitations to owners of the vehicles. He has been involved with the City of Victor Harbor’s Festival organising committee for a number of years and has established a strong link with entrants who have attended many times since the Festival started. Cars were displayed to capacity throughout the city centre including Ocean Street, Albert Place and Warland Reserve. On Saturday morning about 60 cars cruised from McLaren Vale to Victor Harbor via Pages Flat Road and Hindmarsh Tiers Road. On the main day Sunday a large show of Mustangs featured on Warland Reserve with large convertibles and sedans making a spectacular display on Albert Place. A good representation of Holden’s packed Ocean Street. Parking and display coordination was supervised by Lester Williamson and his team of nearly 40 enthusiastic and hard working group of HMVC members who also manned the HMVC Information marquee. At times on the Sunday, it became very busy as a touring group from Adelaide arrived in a big bunch. There was no panic as everyone cooperated as they were directed into position. The City of Victor Harbor marketing and events manager Mark Przibilla said this year’s event was the biggest in its history. He said he loved seeing rows of cars with bonnets up and brilliant chrome shining. “Many visitors attended from interstate which indicates word is spreading among the rock and roll community,” he said. In the ‘The Times’ Leith said the attendance levels were picking up particularly on the Saturday. He said celebrating rock and roll was important because it allows people to release the joy within. HMVC ‘STEERING COLUMN’ ‘NEWSLETTER PAGE 5 OLD STYLE CARS AND MUSIC DELIGHT SANDPIPER RESIDENTS The distinctive sound of the accordion floated across the car park as our reliable resident musician Lyle Freebairn, propped by the green Morris van, played popular old style songs to set the mood for our “car show” and afternoon tea at Sandpiper aged care complex at Goolwa early last month. Our visit was the continuation of our celebration of Old Car Day in September following our run to Kirribilli the week before. t was also appropriate that this visit was special as we have called the runs to these establishments the Dennis Martin Old Car Day Runs in honour of the late Dennis Martin. It was at Sandpiper he enjoyed his last HMVC outing with club members. More than 40 members attended in 23 cars which packed into the entrance driveway and the car park. The attendance was well up on last year. Residents gathered around the cars enjoying a chat and remembering times with the cars they had owned. There was great interest in the older models including the Dodge of Bill Ellis, Peter and Lyn Smyth’s Chic, Doug and Yvonne Sweetman’s Nash and Phil and Joy Stolz’s Chev Capital. Bev and Rien Gerritsen brought the two Morris 8/40s, the original sedan and tourer while Roly Bartlett arrived in the Morris Traveller ‘Woody’. He had planned to bring the Morris Cowley however it decided not to start even after a recent magneto refurbishment. Doug and Vivienne Hill’s MG TC looked great with the hood down. It seems they like it down since the British Classics Tour! The classics were well represented with Bob Sellar’s Mercedes SLC, Rod White’s Porsche 911, David and Cynthia Rodda’s Jaguar, Brian Martin’s Mercedes and Leigh Blacket’s Humber Vogue. Jack and Margarete Winston arrived in style in their new acquisition on its first club run! It is an immaculate gold Mercedes 350SEL. Finally everyone was rounded up for afternoon tea by Sandpiper staff member Karen Barber, also a member of HMVC. She thanked members for attending as the sight of such a variety of cars brought enjoyment to residents. It was a timely finish to a great day and to come indoors as after a sunny morning, a slight drizzle had arrived. Graham Withers Photos page 16 THE GLORY DAYS OF ROWLEY PARK SPEEDWAY Time flies….. It will be 35 years since Rowley Park Speedway held its last meeting. Anyone over 40 would probably know of Rowley Park or of someone who raced there. The Speedway was an institution known the world over. It was magnificently run and promoted by local legend Kym Bonython. Sadly now however the drive reunion meetings are getting smaller in number. Recent heroes to pass on include Bruce Rickard and “Big Bad” John Crowhurst. Rowley Park was not only a speedway it was entertainment. Friday night was speedway night. When Glen Dix spoke at the unveiling of the memorial plaque at the Rowley Park site he said the Entertainment Centre at Hindmarsh is not Adelaide’s first entertainment centre Rowley Park was. Kym Bonython’s promotion included bringing to Adelaide world bike and car champions. The English and Swedish motorcycle solo test teams would often appear to race against Australian teams. American speedcar drivers were regularly contracted to appear. Bob “Two Gun” Tattersall and Jimmy Davies probably being the most famous. All these visiting riders lifted Australia’s standards and improved our stock of racing machines. Kym also incorporated other events into the speedway. The annual fireworks displays were always a sell out night and one night he increased the spectacle by incorporating a “Battle of Britain” theme. He arranged for from memory, 20 to 30 control line model aircraft to be flown over the exploding fireworks. Some of the planes were ‘blown up’ but the overall effect was brilliant. Another of Kym’s masterpieces was the ’demolition derbies’. In the early 1960s fields of around 150 old bangers would take to the track and infield to do battle. It would take over 30 minutes for all cars to be stationary, but there was nonstop entertainment and thrills during this time. People who attended these meetings still talk fondly of the great nights at Rowley Park. Taken from Austin 7 Journals January 2014. HMVC ‘STEERING COLUMN’ NEWSLETTER PAGE 6 JEFF’S JOKES An 85-year-old man was requested by his doctor for a sperm count as part of his physical exam. The doctor gave the man a jar and said, "Take this jar home and bring back a semen sample tomorrow." The next day the 85-year-old man reappeared at the doctor's office and gave him the jar, which was as clean and empty as on the previous day. The doctor asked, what happened and the man explained. "Well, doc, it's like this - first I tried with my right hand, but nothing. Then I tried with my left hand, but still nothing. Then I asked my wife for help. She tried with her right hand, then with her left, still nothing. She tried with her mouth, first with the teeth in, then with her teeth out, still nothing. We even called up Arleen, the lady next door and she tried too, first with both hands, then an armpit, and she even tried squeezin' it between her knees, but still nothing." The doctor was shocked! "You asked your neighbour??" The old man replied, "Yep, none of us could get that dam jar open. A man, returning home a day early from a business trip, got into a taxi at the airport. It was after midnight. While en route to his home, he asked the cabby if he would like to come in the house and be a witness. The man suspected his wife was having an affair and he intended to catch her in the act. "For a $50 tip" the cabby agreed. Quietly entering the house, the husband and cabby tiptoed into the bedroom. The husband switched on the lights, yanked the covers back and there was his wife in bed with another man. The husband put a gun to the naked man's head. The wife shouted "Don't do it! This man has been very generous! I lied when I told you I inherited money. He's the one who paid for the Corvette I gave you. He paid for the new 36' SeaRay. He paid for your NFL season tickets. He paid for our cottage at the lake. He paid for our country club membership, and he even pays the monthly dues!" Shaking his head from side-to-side the husband slowly lowered the gun. He looked over at the cab driver and said "What would you do?" The cabby said, "I'd cover his ass with that blanket before he catches a cold!" I was telling a blonde girl in the pub the other day about my ability to guess what day a woman was born just by feeling her boobs. "Really" she said, "Go on then...try." After about thirty seconds of fondling she began to lose patience and said, "Come on, what day was I born? I said, "Yesterday." A Gravely Funny Story…………. A man placed some flowers on the grave of his dearly departed mother and started back toward his car when his attention was diverted to another man kneeling at a grave. The man seemed to be praying with profound intensity and kept repeating, ‘Why did you have to die? Why did you have to die?’ The first man approached him and said, ‘Sir, I don’t wish to interfere with your private grief, but this demonstration of pain is more than I’ve ever seen before, for whom do you mourn so deeply? A child? A parent? The mourner took a moment to collect himself, then replied………….. ‘My wife’s first husband.’ A man and woman got married, and as they were old-fashioned, they had never had sexual relations. On their wedding night, as the man began to get undressed, his twisted and mangled toes came into view, causing his new bride to gasp. "Oh" he said "I should have told you before now, I contracted Tolio as a child". "Tolio?" she said "Don't you mean Polio...?" "No" he said "look at my toes, I had a severe case of Tolio". The wife agreed that he did. As he continued to undress, his multi-coloured and deformed knees came into view, again causing his new spouse to gasp. "After the Tolio, I contracted the Kneasles" the man said. "Kneasles...?" his wife replied "you don't mean Measles?" "No" he said "look at my knees, I had the Kneasles". As he continued to undress, taking off his pants, his wife cried out loud "Oh my GOD, you caught the Small Cox, too"!!! Ladies, if a man says he will fix it, he will……… There is no need to remind him every 6 months about it!
