WASHINGTON at #9/9 OREGON
Dawgs and Ducks Set for 107th All-Time Meeting
The Game: The Washington football team (5-1 overall, 1-1 Pac-12) heads down Interstate 5 to face
longtime rival Oregon (5-1 overall, 2-1 Pac-12) in a 5:00 p.m. game Saturday night at Autzen Stadium.
The game will air live on FOX Sports 1 television. The Huskies traveled to Berkeley last week and held
the high-flying Bears to just seven points in a 31-7 victory while the Ducks posted a 42-30 win over UCLA
in the Rose Bowl. Oregon is ranked No. 9 in both of this week’s polls while Washington is receiving
votes in both. Following the Oregon game, the Dawgs return home for their lone October home game
vs. Arizona State, Oct. 25.
QUICK SLANTS: Washington ranks third (tied) in the nation with 24 sacks ... senior Hau’oli Kikaha, with
three sacks vs. Cal, now has 10 on the season ... Kikaha leads the nation in both sacks and tackles for
loss (13.5) ... linemate Danny Shelton is fifth in sacks (7.0) and eighth in tackles for loss (9.5) ... with 15
takeaways and just one turnover, the Huskies’ turnover margin of plus-14 is best in the nation (second-best
is 11) ... the Huskies’ one turnover leads the FBS (Oregon and Utah are tied for second with three each) ...
UW and Oregon are the only two teams in the country that have yet to throw an interception this year ...
with a blocked field goal last week at Cal, the Huskies lost their 100-percent record in the red zone this
season ... at 21-for-22 (.955), the Dawgs now rank fourth in red-zone offense ... Huskies Shaq Thompson
and Andrew Hudson are tied for fifth in the nation in forced fumbles (3 in 6 games) while Thompson and
Shelton are tied for second in fumble recoveries (also 3 in 6) ... Thompson has scored four defensive
touchdowns this season (plus another on offense) ... Thompson’s 100-yard fumble return at Cal is one of
just four 100-yard plays in UW history ... Washington has had eight true freshmen play this year: DB Budda
Baker, DL Will Dissly, DB Darren Gardenhire, DB Naijiel Hale, DB Sidney Jones, WR Brayden Lenius, WR
Dante Pettis and PK Tristan Vizcaino ... Baker, Jones and Hale (all defensive backs) have all started ... vs.
Hawai’i, John Ross caught a 91-yard TD pass from Jeff Lindquist, the second-longest pass play in Husky
history (Jake Locker to Marcel Reece, 98 yards, 2007, is the record) ... prior to the season-opening win
at UH, the last time a new Husky coach won his debut game was in 1993, when Jim Lambright’s Dawgs
opened the season with a win over Stanford.
Television: The Washington-Oregon game will air live to a national audience on the FOX Sports 1 with
Joe Davis (play-by-play), Joey Harrington (color) and Kris Budden (sidelines) providing the commentary.
The Pac-12 Networks will also show 60-minute replays next week.
Radio: The Washington IMG College Network, with its flagship station KOMO AM-1000 and FM-97.7,
will carry the live broadcast of every football game on 18 Northwest radio stations. Longtime play-by-play
man Bob Rondeau and color analyst Damon Huard are joined by sideline reporter Elise Woodward. The
Ducks broadcast of the game will also air on Sirius (139) and XM (197) satellite radio.

COACHING STAFF: With a new head coach on board for 2014, the Husky
coaching staff obviously includes mostly new faces. In fact, of the nine fulltime coaches on the 2014 staff, six worked for Chris Petersen last year at
Boise State. Defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski was on Petersen’s staff
in Boise in all eight seasons as head coach, including the last four as coordinator. Kwiakowksi, a BSU Hall-of-Fame defensive lineman, also worked at his
alma mater from 1988 to 1996. Associate head coach and offensive line coach
Chris Strausser spent 12 of the last 13 season coaching in Boise (he coached
at Colorado in 2006), meaning he was with Petersen seven of eight seasons.
Running backs coach and recruiting coordinator Keith Bhonapha was also on
Petersen’s Broncos staff during Petersen’s entire eight seasons, though he
started as director of operations. He’s coached running backs the last five
years at BSU. Assistant head coach and linebackers coach Bob Gregory comes
to Washington having spent the last four seasons at Boise State. He was the
defensive coordinator at California from 2002 to 2009 and, along with also
having coached at Boise State in 2001, has also worked in the conference at
Oregon. Former Oregon State quarterback Jonathan Smith, who turned in several top-class performances vs. the Huskies during his playing days, was quarterbacks coach at Boise State the last two seasons. Previously an offensive
coordinator at Montana, he takes that role (along with QBs) at Washington.
Defensive backs coach Jimmy Lake, who spent the 2004 season in the same
position at Washington under head coach Keith Gilbertson, was Petersen’s
DBs coach in Boise the last two years, having spent five seasons in the NFL
before that. Wide receivers coach Brent Pease worked at BSU under Petersen
for his first six seasons as head coach. The former standout quarterback at
Montana, Pease returned to the Northwest after having coached at Florida
the last two seasons. Defensive line coach and special teams coordinator
Jeff Choate has a similar recent history as he worked under Petersen from
2006 through 2011 before going to Washington State in 2012 and Florida in
2013. Among the nine full-time assistants, the only returner from the 2013
season is tight ends coach Jordan Paopao, who served in that same role in
2013 after having worked as a UW grad assistant in 2011 and 2012, when he
was also in charge of tight ends. The UW staff for four grad assistants in 2014
includes one returner and three newcomers. The returner is former UW and
NFL wideout D’Andre Goodwin, who’s back for his second year. He’s joined
by Ben Thienes, Joshua Taufalele and Gerald Alexander. Thienes was a GA
at Boise State last season while Alexander was a standout DB at Boise State
before playing in the NFL for five years. Taufalele is new to both UW and Petersen. The former offensive lineman at New Mexico most recently coached
at Foothill College in California.
Huskies vs. Ducks History: Washington leads the all-time series against
the Ducks with 58 wins, 43 losses and five ties. While the series of games played
in Eugene has the Ducks enjoying a 16-12 edge all-time (Oregon's home games
vs. the UW were played in Portland for many years), the Huskies are 31-21-4
against their cross-border rivals in games played in Seattle. Washington has
been a frequent visitor to Eugene in recent years. The 2009 game in Seattle
was just the third in the preceeding decade while they've met at Autzen in
2000, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2008 and 2010. The Ducks have had the edge of late,
winning 15 of the last 19 against the Dawgs. The Huskies, however, have
won 15 of the last 32 and 21 of the last 39. Last year at Husky Stadium, the
Ducks stretched a seven-point lead heading into the fourth quarter into a 4524 victory. Marcus Mariota passed for 366 yards and three TDs rushed for 88
and one while the Huskies got 167 rushing yards from Bishop Sankey. In 2012
in Eugene, second-ranked Oregon beat No. 23 Washington, 52-21. In 2011,
in the final game at the old Husky Stadium, the Ducks beat the UW, 34-17.
In 2010 in Eugene, UW QB Keith Price made his first college start in a 53-16
Husky loss. Oregon led 18-16 in the third quarter before pulling away. Three
years at Husky Stadium, Oregon won, 43-19. Four seasons ago in Eugene in
the season-opener for both teams, Jeremiah Masoli came off the bench and
led the Ducks to a 44-10 win. In 2007 in Seattle, the Huskies and Ducks were
tied at 31-31 after three quarters before Oregon pulled away in the final period
for a 55-34 win. The Huskies' last win over Oregon was in 2003, when Shelton
Sampson and Kenny James both rushed for over 100 yards in a 42-10 Husky
victory. Washington and Oregon first met on the football field in 1900, a 43-0
Oregon win in Eugene. The Huskies got their first win in the series in the next
meeting, a 6-5 victory in 1903. From 1974 to 1993, Washington won 17 of 20
meetings. The series also features one of the biggest year-to-year turnarounds
in college football history as the Ducks beat the Huskies, 58-0, in 1973 and
then lost at the UW, 66-0, the following year.

TEAM NOTES
Washington-Oregon Ties: Husky head coach Chris Petersen and
Oregon’s Mark Helfrich are longtime friends as Helfrich began his coaching
career as a graduate assistant at Oregon in 1997, when Petersen was the wide
receivers coach in Eugene. Petersen spent the 1995 through 2000 seasons
on the Oregon staff. During that time, he worked alongside current Ducks
assistants Steve Greatwood, Gary Campbell, Tom Osborne and Don Pellum.
Husky linebackers coach Bob Gregory was a GA at Oregon in 1989 and 1990
and returned to Eugene for the 1998 through 2000 seasons, working along
with Petersen and those same assistants. Washington’s current roster includes
just two players from the state of Oregon: senior OL James Atoe (The DallesWahtonka) and RS-freshman OL Andrew Kirkland (Portland/Jesuit). The Ducks’
roster lists only one Washingtonian: sophomore LB Andy Mattingly (Spokane/
Mead). A few Huskies and Ducks went to the same high school: UW’s Kendyl
Taylor and UO’s Tyler Johnstone and Reggie Daniels (Hamilton); Kirkland and
UO’s Keanon Lowe, Henry Mondeaux, Doug Brenner & Matt Pierson (Jesuit);
UW’s Kevin King and UO’s T.J. Daniel (Bishop O’Dowd); UW’s Dante Pettis and
UO’s Casey Eugenio (Junipero Serra); and UW’s Marcus Peters and UO’s Eddie
Heard (McClymonds).
CAPTAINS: Washington will utilize game-by-game captains this season.
Here is the game-by-game list:
Dawgs and the Northwest: Washington’s most-played rivalries are
against the other three other northwest Pac-12 schools. The Huskies have faced
Washington State 106 times, Oregon in 106 games and Oregon State on 98
occasions. Washington owns the advantage in all three series. The Huskies
lead the Ducks 58-43-5, Washington State 68-32-6 and Oregon State 60-34-4.
Combined, Washington has a 186-109-15 (.624) record against its northwest
rivals. Washington has played all three of the Northwest teams in a season
on 85 prior occasions. Over those 85 seasons in which Oregon, OSU and WSU
were all on the UW schedule, the Dawgs have swept all three 28 times. In
the meantime, the Huskies have lost to all three in the same season on only
seven occasions.
HUSKY STADIUM RENOVATION: Husky Stadium underwent a major renovation over from Nov., 2011, through Aug., 2013, as the entire lower bowl
and south upper deck were demolished and replaced. The new facility features a new, state-of-the-art football operations center (weight room, training
room, locker room, meeting rooms, coaches’ offices) in the west end, much
more premium seating options and a new playing surface. Husky Stadium
had featured a track up until 2011, so seats that were once far from the field,
particularly in the west end, are much closer to the action. For much more
information, including a virtual look from every seat in the new stadium, photo
galleries, live construction cams, and more, go to huskystadium.com.
FOUR BOWLS IN FIVE YEARS AFTER WINLESS SEASON: By reaching a
bowl game last year for the fourth season while just five years removed from
a winless season, Washington pulled off a rare feat. The Huskies were just
the second team in the last 50 years of major college football to have gone
from winless to four bowl games within five seasons. The only other program
to accomplish that feat is Florida (winless in 1979; bowl games in 1980, 1981,
1982 and 1983).

(.758) when a Husky player rushes for 100 yards in a game. The Huskies are
1-0 in such games this season (EWU).
HISTORY LESSON: Successfully rushing the football and winning go handin-hand for the Huskies. Since 1990, UW has rushed for 200 yards in a game
91 times. The Huskies’ record stands at 76-14-1 (.841) in those contests. Since
1995, UW is 51-11-1 (.817) when rushing for 200 yards.
HISTORIC HUSKY STADIUM: The Oregon game on Nov. 5, 2011, marked
the final game in Husky Stadium prior to major renovations that have now
been completed. The Huskies re-opened their home field with a 38-6 win over
then-No. 19 Boise State on Aug. 31, 2013. The 2014 season marks the 94th
season of play in Husky Stadium. Original construction on the facility was
completed in 1920 when Washington played one game in the new campus
facility. UW’s all-time record in Husky Stadium stands at 366-171-21 (.675).
THE PAC-12: Prior to the 2011 season, the Pac-10 Conference added Utah and
Colorado to expand to the Pac-12. Washington, which along with California
is one of two schools who have been in the conference since its founding in
1915, plays in the Pac-12 North, along with the other three Northwest schools
(Oregon, OSU, WSU) and Stanford and California. Under current plans, each
school will play all five division rivals, plus four of six teams in the other
division each season. The first two seasons, the Huskies did not face UCLA
or Arizona State. Last year and in 2013, the Huskies don’t face Utah or USC.
