FLATIRON FLYER INCREASES CAPACITY IN CORRIDOR The realignment of eastbound traffic, from 88th Street in Louisville to east of Federal Boulevard, onto new pavement will be complete by mid-October and segments of westbound traffic are being transitioned to temporary pavement so old lanes can be demolished and permanent concrete pavement can be placed. As traffic is realigned onto new concrete pavement on US 36, the anticipation builds for RTD riders looking forward to the new Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system that will debut in 2016. There are a lot of perks that come with BRT as expressed by RTD General Manager and CEO Phil Washington, “BRT combines the quality of rail transit and the flexibility of buses, and it offers more capacity on US 36.” Riders will enjoy high-frequency, non-stop and all-stop bus service between Union Station and Boulder. Non-stop buses will run the 18 miles in the Express Lanes, making no stops between, while the all-stop service will run in general purpose lanes with stops at each of the corridor’s six stations (U.S. 36•Westminster Center, U.S. 36•Church Ranch, U.S. 36 at Broomfield, U.S. 36•Flatiron, U.S. 36•McCaslin and U.S. 36•Table Mesa). With the US 36 Express Lanes Project drawing closer to completion, RTD has unveiled the branding of its new BRT service. After much debate and input from the public, the new line has been named the “Flatiron Flyer,” and will be distinctly recognizable from RTD’s other buses with their blue and orange coloring and soaring bird. Each station along the Flatiron Flyer line will be upgraded with canopies and benches, along with programmable information displays, ticket vending machines and increased security. 1 ENTHUSIASTS CASH INCENTIVES AND TRIP PLANNING FOR USBIKEWAY 36 COMMUTING SOLUTIONS With support from the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), Denver Regional Council of Governments (DRCOG) and Regional Transportation District (RTD), 36 Commuting Solutions has launched a new campaign called Curb Your Frustration for US 36 to encourage solo drivers to switch to RTD, carpools or vanpools. Go to 36CommutingSolutions.org and fill out a quick application to get started. Those who drive alone on US 36 can choose a free RTD 10-ride Regional Ticket Book worth $45 just to ride the bus. You can also start a carpool by getting your neighbor or coworker to drive with you to work. Carpool applicants can use MyWaytoGo.org to log eight round trips over two months for their $75 carpool incentive. Your company may already have a vanpool that you can join, but if not, 36 Commuting Solutions can help you get started with any of the vanpool providers in your region. Applicants receive a $75 subsidy toward one month of their vanpool provider’s bill. Select employers located within a quarter mile of the McCaslin, Broomfield and Westminster Center RTD Park-n-Rides are eligible to participate in the US 36 Master EcoPass Pilot Program, which will provide free EcoPasses in 2015 and a 70 percent subsidy in 2016 to all full- and part-time employees. Curb Your Frustration runs through the completion of the US 36 Express Lanes Project into early 2016, making 36CommutingSolutions.org a resource for commuters. Let’s get on board with a more enjoyable commute. RECYCLED MATERIALS RESURFACING ON THE CORRIDOR Along with the more traditionally recycled materials including asphalt and concrete, the US 36 Express Lanes Project is finding more ways to utilize materials along the corridor. Here are just a few interesting recycling facts: • As the old wood noise walls were torn down, they were sent to a local company to be made into rustic wood décor, barn doors and planter boxes. • The fencing at McCaslin Boulevard was donated to the City of Louisville Parks and Recreation Department for future use. • Large boulders removed near McCaslin will be used at the Davidson Mesa Scenic Overlook in Bouder County. As construction continues, the project team is committed to finding even more creative ways to recycle materials on the project.
